A darkly handsome New Orleans detective who insists he’s no hero is blindsided by his one-time lover, a sexy investigative TV reporter, who exposes his secret troubled past to the whole world...and nearly costs him his job. When the at-risk teens he mentors start turning up dead, his vow to protect the other kids hits a major snag...his only clue to finding the determined killer is held by the one woman he never wants to see again. Compelled to work together to solve the vicious murders before another child dies, their passion reluctantly reignites, and their mutual mistrust slowly turns to respect as she realizes there’s much more to being a hero than outward appearances, and his deeply wounded heart gradually opens to the possibility of love.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

Reghan Connor, reporter, and a thorn in Detective Gautier Devereux’s side. What Reghan did to Dev, was devastating, and humiliating. Did she have any of her I’s dotted, her T’s crossed, before she slung the mud?

With her own tv programme titled, ‘The Real Story’, well, she didn’t have it on Dev. She does redeem herself in my eyes and Dev’s as the story unfolds, but still, tough blow, low blow.

The setting, New Orleans, Louisiana, hot and sweltering, a bit like the smexi detective. You are going to love Dev. He ticks all the boxes, he doesn’t let Reghan back into his life easily. Yes they have a past, albeit a short one after she blew it up.

There is a killer amongst them killing Dev’s boys, the lads he has given scholarships to. Dev did not have a great up bringing, he was on a path that was sending him one way, until he met the wonderful Thibaud Johnson, a cop with a good heart.

I love Angel’s like Thibaud Johnson, they are special people.

Dev runs the , ‘Thibaud Johnson Center’ , for homeless teens. He gives them that second chance at life. Penn, his surrogate sister and her daughter Katie live with him and help run the center while he is playing detective to pay the bills. I loved seeing Dev in this environment, paying it forward.

The boys are one by one being violently killed... it ain’t pretty.

Now, I did pick the minion, as I was paying close attention to the suspects Mallory Kane was dishing out to the reader. I have always looked at mystery, thriller books in a Kojak / Columbo kind of way, minus the cigar and chuppa chup. This book will have you throwing accusations about. I picked the minion originally, but then Mallory was swaying my mind, I just kept gathering bits to support my minion theory, barely grasping onto my theory as Mallory was very good at trying to keep our brain guessing. She was trying to get the reader to flop about like a fish out of water with ‘who-dun-it’ theories.

Dev has made an enemy in Fontenot. I won’t go into the whys, you can read about that. He is a piece of mind games, work. You assume he is the puppet master, because he pretty well tells the reader he is, but then there are twists, that I loved .

This is an awesome thriller that will keep you guessing, when you think you are on the ‘who-dun-it’ path, Mallory will try to convince you otherwise, throw in a hunk of man, a girl who learns her lesson the hard way and you have a great thriller, mystery, smexi read.

I liked the way Rick Easterling popped up at a certain time, he sounds possibly the next dishy lad that could win a few hearts......I wonder if we get a Rick story?

FAVE QUOTES:

He felt in his pocket for the hankerchief he'd been taught by Thibaud to always carry. Never know when a lady will need a hanky, boy. You make sure you got one for her.

It don't help to run when you're hauling about what you're running from.
