SOME OF THE BOOKS I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO READING - NOVELS ON THE RUN

PRINCE OF SHADOWS
RACHEL CAINE

DUE FOR RELEASE - 4TH FEBRUARY 2014

Goodreads

A standalone built around the character of Benvolio, from Romeo and Juliet. The novel will be told from the point of view of Benvolio, who is Romeo’s cousin and, in Shakespeare’s play, attempts to get the lovelorn Montague interested in other girls after it’s discovered that Juliet is a member of the clan his family despises: the Capulets. Caine’s novel, her agent said, explores a scenario in which Romeo and Juliet are not the only couple to fall into dire romantic straits and is “a tale of intrigue, betrayal, hatred, and tragedy,” about “lovers lost, and lovers found.” (From Publisher's Weekly)

This was all taken from an email with news from Rachel Caine. I was trying to find it on her web page. I found all the Morganville etc stuff so I have copied it and pasted it here. I was trying for the link but I took the news from the email in the end. So below are all Rachel Caine's words, not mine.

Yes, that is one smoking hot cover - I could not be more pleased with it! I think it perfectly reflects the lush setting and tone of the story, and it's just flat-out amazing work by artist Michael Heath.

Prince of Shadows is a real adventure for me ... I wanted to retell the story of Romeo and Juliet, be faithful to the period and the events of the play, and yet put an entirely new interpretation on the events. So this is the play you know, but trust me ... you do not know this story. Benvolio Montague is our guide through the tale, and from his unique perspective we'll learn secrets and lies, triumph and tragedy in entirely new ways.

Here's a quick sample from the novel ...

I stood in the dark corner of my enemy’s house, and thought of murder.

In his bed, Tybalt Capulet snored and drooled like a toothless old woman. I marveled as I thought of how the women of Verona -- from dewy-eyed maids to dignified ladies -- fell swooning in his wake. If they could see him like this (a drunken, undignified mess in sodden linen) they'd have run shrieking to the arms of their fathers and husbands.

It would make a good, vivid story to retell, but only among my closest and dearest.

I turned a dagger restlessly in my gloved hand, feeling that murderous tingle working its way through my veins, but I was no assassin. I was not here to kill. I'd come stealthily into his house, into his rooms, for a purpose.

Tybalt, the heir of Capulet, swaggered the streets of Verona and used wit like weapons; that was nothing new among our class of young cocks. He was never above offering insults, to low or high, when opportunity came. Today, he'd offended my house. House Montague.

The victim was a serving girl. Insults to servants didn't call for open challenges from those of my station, but still, it pricked me, seeing the self-satisfied grin on Tybalt's face as he emerged from that rank little alcove where he’d reduced her to tears; I’d seen her run from him red-faced, holding the tattered rags of her clothes together. He'd injured the girl only to prove his contempt for my house, and that required an answer.

It required revenge, and that was something that I, Benvolio Montague, would serve him – not in the streets, in open war, but here, in the dark. Tonight, I was clad head to toe in disguise, and there was nothing about me to indicate my station, or my house. Tonight, I was a thief -- the best thief in Verona. They called me the Prince of Shadows. For three years, I had stolen from my peers without being caught, and tonight … tonight would be no different.

Except that it was different. My hands felt hot and restless. So easy to drag a dagger across that hated throat, but murder spawned murder, and I didn't want to kill Tybalt. There had been enough of that between our two houses; the streets ran slick with spilled blood. No ... I wanted to humiliate him. I wanted to knock him from his perch as the man of the hour.

I had the will, and the access. All that remained now was to choose how to hurt him best. Tybalt was the God-crowned heir of Capulet; he was rich, indulged, and careless. I needed to wound him where it counted -- in the eyes of his family, and preferably in the eyes of all Verona.

Ah. I spotted a gleam as something caught the light on the floor. I crossed to the corner where he'd dumped a tangle of clothing, and found the jeweled emblem pinned to his doublet -- a gaudy piece, in Capulet colors, one that would feed even a well-done-by merchant family for a year. No doubt he'd underpaid for it, as well; Tybalt was more likely to terrify honest men into bargains than pay fairly. I added the prize to my purse, and then drew Tybalt's rapier from its sheath, slowly and carefully. It came free with a soft, singing ring of steel, and I turned it in the moonlight, assessing the quality. Very fine, and engraved with his name and crest. A lovely weapon. A personal weapon.
He did not deserve such a beautiful thing.

I sheathed it and belted it on, opposite my own rapier. As the heir of Capulet snored, drunken and oblivious, I pulled off my black cap and bowed with perfect form, just the way I would have been honor-bound to greet him if we'd had the mischance to meet on the street. Under the breath-moistened black silk of my mask, I was smiling, but it felt more like a grimace.

"Good night, sweet prince, thou poxy son of a dog," I whispered. Tybalt smacked his lips, mumbled drunkenly, and rolled over. In seconds, he was snoring again, loud as a grinding-wheel against a knife.

I slipped out of the door of his apartments, past his equally dozy servant, and considered my exit from the Capulet palace. The obvious was to return the way I'd entered, but I'd come in during the height of the busy afternoon, carrying a box of supplies from a provisioner's wagon. I'd spent the day admiring the brickwork of the Capulet cellars. Going out the same way was unlikely; the kitchen door was almost certainly locked and guarded now.

Out through the narrow gardens, then. Once I was beyond the wall’s high stone barrier, I would be just another bravo on the moonlit streets, making for my bed.

I went up the stairs, taking them two at a time; my soft leather shoes made no sound on the polished marble. I'd worn gray to blend into the ever-present stone and brick of Verona; in the shadows, there was nothing better with which to disappear. Even here, inside the quiet house, it was a reasonably good disguise. I ghosted past murky squares of paintings upon the walls, and a candelabra with two still-burning tapers (a true sign of family wealth); the tapestry at the top of the stairs was rich and very tempting to steal, but too heavy, and I had enough trophies already.

Upstairs was women's country. Lady Capulet would have the largest and most lavish quarters, to the right -- the grand palace was almost a mirror of my own family's, in many ways. That meant the girls would have the smaller apartments to the left -- the oldest, Rosaline, said to be studious and bookish, was probably well asleep by now. She'd have the far rooms, since she was only a cousin, not the lady's own daughter. She was Tybalt's sister, arrived in Verona only a few months before, and kept shut up hard in the palace. I’d heard a rumor she was nothing like her loathsome brother, at least; that was to her credit.

There was no servant on duty at her door, and when I tried it, I found it unlocked. A trusting lot, these Capulets, at least within their own walls. I slipped the latch and stepped quietly inside, only to find that the room wasn't as dark as I'd hoped. There was a low-burning fire crackling on the hearth, and a candle flickering on the table. It scarcely mattered if the girl had left lights burning, as the bed curtains were pulled. She'd hear and see nothing through the thick coverings. I took reasonable care not to allow the floor to creak as I crossed it, and I was almost to the window when I realized that I had erred.
Badly.

Rosaline Capulet was not in bed. She was, instead, perched in a chair on the far side of the table, reading a slim book.

I saw her before she saw me. Candlelight dusted her skin with gold, and flickered in her large, dark eyes; her neck was swan-graceful, and her slender hands cupped the spine of the volume with care. She wore a simple lawn night-gown. I could make out the shadowed curves of her body beneath the white fabric. She had put her midnight-dark hair into a long braid for the night, and was thoughtfully twirling one end of it as she read.

No one had warned me she was beautiful.

BOOK REVIEW - THE RAVEN BOYS by MAGGIE STIEFVATER - RAVEN CYCLE # 1 - SCHOLASTIC BOOKS - 4.5 STARS!!!

By: Maggie Stiefvater
Published By: Scholastic
Released : 28th September 2012
Details: Paperback, ARC 408 Pages

RATING: 4.5 GANSEY, ADAM, RONAN & NOAH STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of theShiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

This trailer will tell you a lot I won't repeat in my review.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

The cover of The Raven Boys is absolutely gorgeous. I want to get it in hardback. The beautiful raven on the front is stunning with the painted brush strokes, and the embellished title and author names add to this cover.

The story within is so much more than the blurb.

This book is told from many POV’s. I enjoyed being in everybody’s head, looking through their eyes. Maggie takes the time to let the reader absorb her characters and world she has made for us to enjoy.

The characters in this story are made up of the quirky, the mysterious, the abused, believers in magic and the impossible, psychics, troubled souls and boys on a quest, believing in their leader Gansey, whole heartedly.

My first thoughts were this was going to be a story about a girl, Blue ( love her name!!) who has been warned by her mother and half aunts ( the quirky , eccentric psychics) that she will indeed meet a boy, and her kiss will kill him. The reader following Blue about as Raven Boys enter her prominently female home life.

This is true. She meets the boy. But which boy does this kiss of death refer to?

This story goes much deeper and takes the reader on their own quest away from kissing. Sure it pops up as a thought throughout the storyline, but we are learning about Gansey, Adam, Ronan and Noah.

There is more than one story within this story..... deep aren't I?

I really liked Blue. She is quite a serious character who is surrounded by her mother and her friends. Women are a big part of her life. Men, not so much.

Enter The Raven Boys. The title of this book is perfect. There is much reference to ravens in this story. It all must mean something. Little seeds are sown for future instalments.

Gansey, the boy with dollars to burn, he knows no other life. He has always had money, owner of Monmouth, an old brick factory. This guy has the coolest pad. Noah, Ronan and Gansey live together in this awesome pad, complete with mini Henrietta township ( you have to read the book).

Gansey is on a quest of discovery, he is quite obsessed. He tells everybody about this quest. Is this a good idea? All his findings are in his journal. I loved Gansey’s character. He drives a bright orange Camaro he names THE PIG. He could own any car in the world, no matter the cost, but he owns THE PIG , it breaks down alot.

Gansey cares for his mates. He wants to help them. He appears to have the perfect life. Great family, no money problems and he gets to indulge in a quest. It’s like a boys dream to have all of the above and not have to worry about anything other than getting to the end of his quest.

Adam who makes up this foursome of mates lives in a trailer park with his parents. He has much to worry about. He is not rich. He is not a true Raven Boy, he is on a scholarship. He holds down jobs, plural. He is not privileged. Adam is a very likeable character. He is observant, caring and thoughtful. He has a lot of heart.

Ronan is the bad boy. Gansey knows how to handle Ronan. Ronan doesn’t much want to like anybody. Ronan is privileged but he is also damaged, troubled. There are these awesome seeds sown in this book with regard to Ronan. I caught a lot of them, I may have missed others. See how you go with finding them. Ronan to me is much, much more than he probably knows himself. Hmmmm...I am intrigued about what Maggie is doing with this guy.

I air high fived Maggie ,she got me, she got me goooood! I love when I get blind sided. There is a character that I noticed one sentence that made me prick my ‘theory ears’ up. This one sentence bugged me the whole book , my brain being a smarty pants thinking I had worked it out.....OMG!! Maggie got me gooooood!!

There is this wonderful mythology thing that Maggie is weaving through the story.

The Quest. ( it needs its own line as it is a QUEST!!!)

We spend a lot of the book with Blue meeting the boys and seeing some of the back story of these Raven Boys and we learn more about Gansey’s quest. Should he be telling all and sundry about this quest?

I found myself having to let the pages turn with the story line as we do spend time getting to know the boys and bringing everybody together, then ............let the magic begin. OOo wonderful imagination , Maggie.

This party has only just got started. We have met the boys, the psychics, learnt about the quest and such things. Blue has us wondering who she should not kiss, who she wants to kiss? Will there be a kiss?

There are funny moments , intrigue, beautifully described scenes, sad moments that will wind you and leave you holding your heart. There will be the characters that take you by surprise and make you rethink your original thoughts. I am very, very intrigued to read more.

All the Raven Boys have caught my attention, and of course there is the quest and that kiss!

The kiss of death. Not a lot to put on Blue's shoulders. Much.

A big THANKYOU to Scholastic Australia for sending me an Arc copy of The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater.

FAVE QUOTES:

There were two Ganseys: the one who lived inside his skin, and the one Gansey put on in the morning when he slid his wallet into the back pocket of his chinos. The former was troubled and passionate, with no discernible accent to Adam’s ears, and the latter bristled with latent power as he greeted people with the slippery, handsome accent of old Virginia money. It was a mystery to Adam how he could not seem to see both versions of Gansey at the same time.

Gansey could’ve had any and all of the friends that he wanted. Instead he had chosen the three of them, three guys who should’ve, for three different reasons, been friendless.

Blue had two rules: Stay away from boys, because they’re trouble , and stay away from raven boys, because they were bastards.

Success meant nothing to Adam if he hadn’t done it for himself.

These little flowers were quiet and sparse, just like him.

BOOK COVER - THE SCORPIO RACES by MAGGIE STIEFVATER

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Shiver and Linger comes a brand new, heartstopping novel.

With her trademark lyricism, Maggie Stiefvater turns to a new world, where a pair are swept up in a daring, dangerous race across a cliff--with more than just their lives at stake should they lose.

RELEASE DATE : OCTOBER 18TH 2011
I'm looking forward to this book . I have read Lament and Ballad and Shiver and I have Linger on my bookshelf with Forever being released July 12th 2011. I wanted to read Shiver again, then Linger and Forever in one little mini marathon cause I hate waiting for sequels. I just adore reading a whole series in a mini marathon or atleast several books in the series as , that's the manner in which I like to roll ( Ranulf's words not mine, Hourglass, Claudia Gray). Maggie is very artistic the way she writes, down to using music. It's a calmer but intense sort of writing if that makes sense. I must get my reviews done as I am waaayyyy behind on Maggie and Suzanne Collins. I'm hoping Maggie makes it to QLD so I can tag along to a book signing. I know it's Melbourne for sure, locked in, so Miss Suzi is rather over the moon as Maggie is Miss Suzi's fave upon, fave, upon, faaaavvvveee author. I am soo pleased Suzi gets Maggie in her city. * whispers* I hope QLD too:D

BY GUEST REVIEWER CAROLYN

BOOK REVIEW:

This is a book of short stories of paranormal romance by some well known authors. Each story is only about 20-49 pages long so is a great book for filling in time between books you have read and may be waiting for. This is why I started reading it. I was waiting for Fire to arrive after reading Graceling and didn’t want to start another book in case Fire arrived. I didn’t read this book in order but chose the stories by the authors I knew first then read the others randomly. I do like these books as you get a taste of what different authors writing styles are like. As a result of reading this and 'The Eternal Kiss' previously, I am now interested in reading some of the authors other work.

DUNGEONS OF LANGEAIS by Becca Fitzpatrick (24 pages)

This is the story of Chauncey who appears in Becca’s book 'Hush, Hush'. Anyone who has read that book will know who Chauncey is. The “Dark Angel” is mentioned throughout and this is about Chauncey’s hatred of said angel. He is never mentioned by name but we all know who it is. It did not change my opinion of Chauncey. I still don’t like him but now understand his motives towards Nora in 'Hush, Hush' and the “Dark Angel”, well somethings never change.

HARE MOON by Carrie Ryan (30 pages)

This story is about Sister Tabitha from Carrie Ryan’s book , 'The Forest of Hands and Teeth' (TFOHT) so I guess it is a backstory. At the beginning I felt sorry for the young Tabitha. She wants to know what is outside the fences and her parents don’t treat her very nicely. However by the end of it, I just went back to my original thoughts of her from TFOHT. She is just plain mean and nasty. I just can’t understand why she did what she did but can now understand her attitude towards Mary in TFOHT. She can see herself as a young girl in Mary and is jealous of her.

THE HOUNDS OF ULSTER by Maggie Stiefvater (20 pages)

I didn’t see the POW coming in this one. It was a bit of a weird short story, kept going back and forth and all over the place for the first few pages, then settled down into a really good story. It was interesting and I really wanted to know who “THEY” were. The main character wouldn’t name them but, wow,  I was surprised when I found out. I have read Maggie’s books 'Shiver' and 'Linger',  but haven’t yet read 'Lament' or 'Ballad' and she certainly likes to centre her characters around music.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS by Daniel Waters (26 pages)

This story was just plain weird. It starts off with 5 teenagers from a small town in a car crash. 3 of the boys and 1 girl die and the other girl survives but is in a coma. The parents all go to a counselling session where the counsellor tells them what to expect when if or when their children “return”. Apparently in this and surrounding towns when people die they quite often return within 7 days. The families are not allowed to bury the bodies of their loved ones before the 7 days is up. This is told from the point of view of Cal the local police officer. His daughter Mandy died in the crash, and it follows him for the 7 days after the crash. As I said before, just plain weird.

THE ASSASSIN’S APPRENTICE by Michelle Zink (22 pages)

When reading this I was thinking not another story about descendants of angels which is what this is about. Rose’s family are descendants of angels and have been killed by a demon named Bael and now she is planning on killing him herself. Enter Asher, an apprentice assassin sent to protect Rose and kill Bael. There is a bit of smexual tension between the two as they try to work together.

ERRANT by Diana Peterfreund (33 pages)

Errant ,  is set several centuries ago in France and is about a nun that is also a unicorn hunter. She and her unicorn named Enyo. They are sent to train a young lady named Elise for a hunting ritual that is to be held as part of the Elise’s wedding festivities. Her family has the Unicorn hunting blood in their veins meaning that they can call unicorns with their minds. It was quite a good story, a little bit hard to follow early but ended quite well.

THE SPIRIT JAR by Karen Mahoney (45 pages)

This is the second story about Marie O’Neil or 'Moth' as she is referred to. The first story about 'Moth',  the eternal 18 year old vampire , I first read about in ,  'The Eternal Kiss'.  In this story, Theo her creator has sent her to London to retrieve an ancient magical book from an obscure occult bookshop. She meets Adam, then they have an adventure involving a spirit.

LOST by Justine Musk (22 pages)

Sasha is a girl who has the ability to find things that are lost. Her best friend Josh is in a coma after a terrible car accident three weeks before and now she is feeling lost herself. She has the urge to go to the big white abandoned house up on the hill and there she finds Haiden.

This was really interesting and completely different to what I thought it would be about and the ending was totally surprising. I am sure anyone reading it will make a comparison to something that I cannot name without giving away the plot.

THE SPY WHO NEVER GREW UP by Sarah Rees Brennan (27 pages)

A boy is hired as a Super Spy for Her Majesty the Queen of England’s secret service. Judging from the title, it is the story of ........  All he asks for in payment is a mother. There is actually quite a bit of humour in this story.  There are a few adult type comments in there for us “older” readers, and I really liked it. I do wonder if there is a little boy who doesn't want to grow up in a lot of the secret service agents . They do like to play with the “big boy” toys.

BEHIND THE RED DOOR by Caitlin Kittredge (39 pages)

Jo, is a teenage girl who decides to enter an abandoned property called Ash House. When she enters she sees the ghost of a young man and then starts having nightmares about the house.  This story has everything, smoking, drug taking, drinking, lesbian relationship. Not your typical YA short story but interesting nonetheless.

FAMILIAR by Michelle Rowen (32 pages)

Brenda is a teenage witch-in-training that has to pick a familiar. A familiar is a witch’s pet, such as a cat, bat, snake, ferret or rat. Brenda picks a scrawny half-dead looking runt of a kitten with a rhinestone collar on.  I liked this story it was different to the other stories it was a good short story. Would be interested to read some of Michelle Rowen’s other books.

FEARLESS by Rachel Vincent (48 pages)

Sabine, a fifteen year old girl who is in trouble with the law,  has no family, has been living in foster care but got into trouble with a baseball bat and somebody’s car. She is sent to Holser House after breaking her probation curfew by staying out all night. It is a halfway house for wayward teenage girls. If she messes up again she will be going to Juvenile Detention. It was very interesting read and different from the others about witches, vampires, werewolves etc. Kind of ended a bit abruptly though.

VERMILLION by Daniel Marks (49 pages)

This is about a place called Vermillion which is in Purgatory. Velvet and her boyfriend Nick are asked to accompany Aime to hunt down a ghost that is haunting the living.  It was quite interesting to look at things from the ghosts point of view, however I did feel that it was a little bit too long. Probably could have cut around 10 pages out of it and it still would have been good. I did like it although the ending was pretty obvious.
