NOVELLA REVIEW - TORMENTING LILA by SARAH ALDERSON

 TORMENTING LILA
(Lila #2.5)
by
SARAH ALDERSON

Format/Acquired:  Digital from Author

RATING: 5 SHORT AWESOME STARS!

When Lila and Alex sneak off for a romantic weekend away, Lila’s hoping she’ll finally have a chance to work on Alex’s resolve.

But just as things start heating up news reaches them of a serial killer at loose on the island and it isn’t long before their intimate weekend away is interrupted.

A mind reader, a projector, a protective older brother and a serial killer. One of them is going to find Lila first. She's hoping it's the serial killer.

MARISSA'S REVIEW

True to Sarah Alderson's writing skill, I became engrossed in Tormenting Lila from the start.

It was great to be back reading more Lila and Alex - and as the story progressed (though short) it certainly became evident that there was a whole lot more to come for these two.  So much so that when I got to the last page.....I kept flicking back and forth seeking more pages to read...."No - it can't end there"!  I had been sucked in and so engrossed, I had forgotten it was a novella!!

Looking for some R&R after an awesome bad guy take down (!), Alex and Lila head off to have some "alone" time on Nantucket. Well, alone as can be had when your super power buddies end up in the same place.  Oh, and Alex has some rules for what is allowed to happen during your alone time!!! Lila is not impressed and no amount of girl swagger can change his mind!

But with all things Lila, nothing is simple and danger seems to saunter up and slap her like a wet fish !  Seriously - can a girl get some down time please?!

The clever introduction of new characters has been used as a launch to Sarah's newest and stand-alone novel The Sound. With the introduction of Jessie into the storyline, fans of Lila Series should be jumping out of their skin for The Sound. My eyes will be devouring that one for sure......Jessie sounds like Alex's competition in the hottie department!!

In a nutshell people - if you love the Lila Series, Tormenting Lila (as with previous Lila Novella's) is a must read. If you haven't delved into Lila's world - go....go now and don't return till you have all available books/novella's......and have yourself a Lila fest!!

ENJOY!

RATING

Description from Authors' Website:
Alex and Lila are on the run, desperately trying to stay one step ahead of the Unit, which somehow is managing to track their every move. Whilst Alex is determined to keep Lila safe and her ability secret at any cost, Lila’s only thought is of finding a way back to California so that she can rescue her brother and mother from the military base where they’re being held.
Struggling to control both her growing power and her deepening feelings for Alex, Lila decides the time has finally come to stop running and start fighting. Together with Alex, Demos, and the people she’s come to think of as family, Lila plans not just to save her brother and mother, but to completely destroy the Unit and everything it stands for.
But the plan requires Lila to return alone to California, make friends with the enemy, and to risk losing everything – Alex, her family, and even her life.

MARISSA'S REVIEW:

EXPLOSIVE
ACTION PACKED
AND HOT!
ONE OF 2012’S BEST YA RELEASES

Hot on the heels of success that Hunting Lila and Fated have brought Sarah Alderson, we have ourselves her best work to-date!  Losing Lila starts with a bang – well a chase through the streets and roof tops of Mexico City - and goes high speed right until the very last page.
To say I enjoyed Losing Lila is an understatement.

Lila and Alex are on a mad race to try stay one step ahead of the unit and rescue not only Jack (shot and in a coma on the military base), but Lila and Jack’s mum – not dead and killed Demos, but held captive by Richard Stirling and being “tested” on like a lab rat.  The have joined forces with Demos and the gang of lovable psy larricans to infiltrate the base and bring about the demise of Stirling Enterprises.

But wait…..let’s throw Lila’s overprotective dad into the mix and we have ourselves one family reunion sure to make your head spin!

Hunting Lila was fantastic and introduced us to some awesome and lovable characters – even the “baddies” were great!  Sarah takes it a few steps further in Losing Lila giving us more insight into the secondary characters of Nate, Suki, Amber, Alicia and even Harvey.  We see a side of Demos that could crack a steel heart. And you can’t help but love the quips thrown about from Nate’s Mamma, Mrs Johnson.

The chemistry that sizzles between Alex and Lila is ever present and won’t disappoint! We are given just enough personal interaction between them to enjoy (and cement Alex as one of YA’s hottest) and just the right amount to not overpower the main focus of the mission that they have all embarked on.  A well balanced romance and adventure novel.

Now I hear say you six stars?!  That's right. Six stars of pure enjoyment from start to finish!

I'd like to leave you with a song from Sarah's Losing Lila Playlist.  One of my fave bands, Muse and their song Time is Running Out. This song is set in the final action-packed scenes when time is really running out and they’re under pressure and everything is going wrong. Can they figure out a plan before it really is too late?

ENJOY!

RED LIGHT ALERT!!

SERIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

BOOK REVIEW:

I started reading Hunting Lila after I read the prequel novella, short story, ‘Catching Suki’. I had stayed away from reading any spoilers or even really knowing what Hunting Lila was about as I wanted to read it totally fresh. ‘Catching Suki’ is this irresistible teaser short story that had me hooked. I cracked Hunting Lila open, got told off by hubby at 2am for having the light on and finished it off later in the morning. In other words this book is hard to put down.

This book has momentum. It is fast paced, exciting and you just love all the characters whether they are the goodies or the baddies, cause sometimes it’s hard to tell who is on the bad side of the fence.

Lila is a wonderful, smart character who is almost as stubborn as her brother Jack. She is carrying around a secret with her, well two, but one is written all over her face. She has fled London to see her brother and Alex and lands herself smack bang in the middle of a situation. Her father is not impressed.

Jack, her 22 year old Special Ops brother and Alex his best friend, are on a mission to ‘contain’ people of interest in the death of Jack and Lila’s mother, but it is much bigger than that. This Unit, is so secret that even the President doesn’t even know about them.

Jack and Alex are the two swoon worthy guys in this book, built like GI Joe dolls, all muscle and tightness in all the right places, totally loyal to the cause and to each other. They are total babes and Jack knows it.

Jack is the more volatile of the two, stubborn and totally focused on containing all persons of interest, following orders to the letter.

Alex is the calmer, easier to reason with who can come across as the more wise of the two when sometimes you have to sit back, take stock and question where you are headed.

Did I mention Alex rides a motorbike and knows how to ride fast?

Demos, Amber, Alicia, Ryder, Nate, Suki, Bill and Harvey are great sub characters. In ‘Catching Suki’, you really get a feel for these characters and they hooked me into wanting to know more.

Nate is sweet and funny. Suki means well but manages to let go of a few faux pas and Amber and Ryder are totally in to each other.

Sarah has a wonderful YA voice. She has great word power. Scenes get described so well that you feel like you are the one with your arms wrapped tight around Alex’s waist as you hang on while he gets you to safety on the back of his bike ( or here’s wishing..hehe). I felt like I was watching a movie rather than reading a book. This is how good her word power is. Everything she writes flows so well in this book. It is this massive fast paced ride from start to finish and I want another ticket for Losing Lila.

Sarah has left us on the edge of our seats.

FAVE QUOTES:

‘Come on let’s get you to bed,’ he said, when he came back in.
‘No, really, I’m fine here on the sofa,’ I protested.
‘Listen , if I have to pick you up and carry you in there, you’re sleeping in my bed.’
The words sounded so good --- it was a shame they didn’t mean what I wanted them to.

“When you came down the stairs and fell into me, that was the moment.” Then his lips pressed against mine.

‘He was like , “Dude, what the hell with my sister?” And Alex was all “I love her”, and Jack was “No way, man,” and Alex just turned round and said “That’s the way it is . Deal,” and that was sort of the end of it. You know, I totally get why you’re in love with him by the way. He’s totally gorgeous.’ He rolled his eyes as though he’d just licked his favourite ice cream.

I have to include this link for Brodie's page this is a most excellent poem for Hunting Lila, I loved it!

INTERVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Sarah Alderson - Hunting Lila

SARAH ALDERSON
Author of
HUNTING LILA

Today on the blog I have the absolute pleasure of interviewing Sarah Alderson, author of Hunting Lila (her debut novel).

Welcome Sarah and thank you so much for taking time out of your sun drenched, massage fuelled busy schedule!!!!

Sarah currently resides in one of the most beautiful places in the world…..Bali, Indonesia.  It is a place of dreams – and Sarah is living the dream!!!

1.      Was there a certain something that inspired the writing of Hunting Lila?

My husband and I quit our jobs in London in 2009 and packed our bags and princess-obsessed, tutu wearing toddler and took off on a round the world trip looking for a new place to live. I didn't have any skills so to speak of and was wondering what I would do to earn a living and one day whilst puzzling on this I thought 'I know, I'll write a book. Stephenie Meyer wrote a book about vampires and look at her - she's a gazillionaire.'
And that is how Hunting Lila was born. Literally that day. Five minutes after that thought, I had the kernel of an idea. By the next day I had a list of Demos's crew and a description of Lila and Alex. The day after I started writing. And I never looked back. That was just over two years ago and I'm just finishing up my sixth book.
Ok, and also Alex Skarsgard. He inspired the character of Alex. If you haven't seen Generation Kill you should watch it. Marines with their shirts off, sweaty and grimy. And Alex Skarsgard. Say no more.

2.     I’ve read on numerous web haunts that you have a “thing” for Demos (the “villain” in Hunting Lila)…. What exactly about him has you interested?

Demos' power is so interesting - he can stop people from thinking or feeling and even from moving.

When he was younger he abused this power and learned a hard lesson as a result. Actually he still occasionally abuses this power! But really I like to think he's a deeply misunderstood man who is acting from outside the law but who has his reasons for doing so. He has a strong moral code and he commands great loyalty and respect from those around him.  He's flawed and he's the anti-hero and I always like the anti-hero as they make far more interesting characters. They're more the everyman in life - the ones who make the mistakes most of us would make so it's easier to empathise and easier for us then to put ourselves into their shoes.
I guess too that my heart aches for Demos. In Losing Lila we get to know him more and discover more of his back story - there's a scene - one of the final ones in the book - that made me cry when I wrote it and still makes me cry just remembering it.

One day when they make the film (fingers crossed!) I can't wait to sit on the casting couch for Demos. Because in a way I think he's the heart of the book. Becasue the book is all about the things we do for love.

3.     Who do you feel has the most awesome super power in Hunting Lila (and why?)….

I like how Lila's power (she can move things with her mind) develops in Losing Lila. In Hunting Lila she doesn't have it under control and it scares her, though towards the end we glimpse just how strong she really is.
In Losing Lila we stop seeing Lila as vulnerable and insecure and start to see her growing in confidence and in her power. This is shown through the choices she makes - instead of reacting she starts making more careful choices and thinking things through - she's still impulsive at times but her actions are surer. Lila's bravery was never in question and she was never the damsel in distress but in Losing Lila she really comes into her own - by having to face even greater challenges and learning to trust herself and those around her.
I think partly she is able to gain this control because her relationship with Alex provides her with some stability. They are very much a partnership in Losing Lila (the opening scenes are reminiscent of the Bourne Supremacy but with two Bournes not one) and it's interesting to see how this partnership between them develops over the course of the book. Alex has been alpha male saving her quite frequently in Hunting Lila and suddenly the power balance is shifting.
This journey of Lila's was always one I plotted over two or more books. It's a lot to ask someone to go through what she's gone through and then transition into the archetypal heroine, overcoming all her challenges and self-doubt within just one book. She needed time to grow into who she is and in Losing Lila she really does.
 She kicks ass.

4.     What are some of your writing distractions and how do you overcome them?

Social media. Without a doubt. I'm addicted to it. And to Goodreads though I'm trying to step away from the refresh button and not go there. Hunting Lila has had such amazing love from reviewers but every time you check your reviews your heart is in your mouth. It's not good for the soul.
Other distractions include a five year old, a liver-eating puppy, the need to dance regularly, the school run and watching Sons of Anarchy, True Blood and Game of Thrones.

I overcome these by writing whilst my daughter at school, employing someone to cook the liver, dancing ecstatically every Friday night (normally imagining I'm dancing with one or more of my characters), using the school run to plot out dialogue in my head and not thinking of watching TV as a distraction but rather as RESEARCH.

5.     Have you enjoyed the road to being published?  Worst and best occasions.

Of course! It's been amazing. Though it's also very, very SLOOOOOOW. I was very lucky in that Hunting Lila was my first ever manuscript. I wrote it in less than five months and had an agent within six weeks of submitting it and a deal two months after that. That's fast. Some people struggle for years. I only had to wait a year until the publication date which again is considered fast.
From the moment I sent off my manuscript to agents through to the publication day  it felt like slow and agonising torture with occasional moments of bliss - the day I got my deal - the day I saw the cover - the day I opened the box with all my author copies in it - the day I got an offer on the film rights!
Without a doubt the worst occasion was when I was waiting for publishers to come back to my agent with a yes or a no. I didn't eat for three weeks because I felt so completely sick with nerves.
Best occasion? Wow, probably my book launch. It was so overwhelming to have so many people from so many different parts of my life come along to support me - from my oldest friend through to my blog readers and even the producer of the King's Speech. It was epic. Like getting married. And I bought myself the most incredible Vivienne Westwood dress and shoes to celebrate.

6.     What style of writer are you?  Do you plan it all out on a story board or maybe you just run with what happens when you start typing?

I used to plan a lot more but I've never story-boarded. I would jot down notes and dialogue and plan out chapters and swim for hours trying to figure out where the plot was going. Now I'm on my sixth book I just sit and write and have faith that it's all going to work out. I have a start point and I have a vague but fairly certain idea of where I want the book to end but that's all. And so far, so good! I have a huge belief in the universe providing me with all the ideas I need exactly when I need them. In fact, I have that quote written above my desk. It's a good thing to remember.

7.     So glad to read that music plays a huge part during your writing.  The soundtrack you have posted is fantastic!  With artists that include Muse, Sia, Little Boots and La Roux – what song or artist of your playlist was the most powerful and for what scene did it help to mould?

Music is essential to me! I can't live without music and all my playlists are on spotify and open to the public. You can also see them on my website (http://www.sarahalderson.com/)
For Lila I guess the song that really became the anthem I wrote the book to was La Roux, Cover my eyes. I used to listen to it on repeat endlessly whilst I wrote - particularly the chapters when Lila goes on the run right up to the point in San Jacinto national park. It seemed to evoke every emotion Lila felt about Alex in such a poignant, heartfelt way, and the loss she felt at having to leave him. Whenever I hear that song I feel Lila's heart breaking inside my chest.
Also Midlake's 'Acts of Man' - that track evokes for me the final scene in Joshua Tree. If you listen to it you'll know what it's about.

8.     Do you have any tips for those wanting to achieve “the dream” of being a full time writer?

HA! Move to Bali. Because 99.9% of writers don't earn enough I'm afraid to live on, unless you live somewhere with very low living costs. Or you luck out and are in the 0.01% of authors who actually become bestsellers. And even if that did happen I'd still say come live in Bali because not only is it beautiful but it's also full of some completely bizarre people  - many of whom are going to end up in books that I write. It opens the mind and furnishes the imagination living here!

9.     You have written another novel, “Fated” – can you please give an insight into this story and is it a stand alone or part of a series?

Fated is about a girl called Evie who finds out she's a Hunter - a demon slayer - and that she's being hunted down by a group of demons called the Brotherhood who are trying to stop her before she can fulfil a dangerous prophecy. One of the Brotherhood - a boy called Lucas, who is trying to avenge his parents' death at the hands of Hunters, is sent to spy on Evie and then ordered to kill her.
It has a lot of action, a very passionate love story and a lot of great characters.

I wanted to explore this idea of whether Fate has a hand in our lives and who we meet - whether we have freedom in choosing who we are.  I believe that people come into our lives for a reason but I also think we have control over our lives and the choices we make.
It does stand alone but I've written two more in that series because I just had to and wanted to follow my heart even though I was only contracted for the first one.
My personal all time favourite character is called Cyrus and he's in the sequel to Fated. He's awesome - the most fun character I've had the chance to write, so I hope people get to meet him one day. There is a fourth book in the Fated series but I haven't written it yet. I've moved onto a new book!

Thanks again Sarah for taking the time to answer my questions.  I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Hunting Lila and look forward to it’s sequel Losing Lila (but have to wait!!).  I’ll also be getting my hands on “Fated” real soon.

Enjoy Bali, your beautiful family and your wonderful life!  Cheers, Marissa

REVIEW:
A huge thanks to Simon & Schuster for sending me a copy of this FANTASTIC debut novel to read and review.

Let it be known.....Sarah Alderson has arrived!! YAY!  Hunting Lila is Sarah's debut novel and what a way to debut as an author.
I whipped through Hunting Lila in a night.....not because it was simple and short - far from it......Hunting Lila had me hooked from the start.  A beautiful love story mixed in with action, heroes, secrets and some wicked super powers.  It's been described before as a mix of X-Men and 24 rolled into one love story - it certainly is just that.

Lila has a super power....but she doesn't want it - she doesn't want to be special with something she can barely control.  Just ask the guy whose eye she nearly cut out!!

Life for Lila started on a downward spiral when her mother died and her father packed himself and her off to London to get away and keep her safe.  They left behind Jack, Lila's older brother who went to live with his best mate Alex - who is the hotty love interest for Lila....a candle of love she has held since a little child.

Back to the guy who nearly lost his eye.....this little incident had Lila running (ok she caught a plane!) from London to California to be with Jack (& Alex).  She hated London, missed Jack terribly and just wanted to be back on home soil.
Little did she know of the secretive world her brother was living in - and what impact it would have on her own life. Lila starts out as a tormented teen and evolves into a strong willed individual that begins to embrace her power and tries become the protector to Jack and Alex.

Jack is the typical older brother.  Being older by a few years as well!!  He is very protective of Lila, but at the same time wary of her motives to pay him a visit.  Without giving reason he wants to ship her back to London and needs Lila to just accept it!  That is so not going to happen! For one...she would need to tell him about her telekinesis....two - she hates London.....Three - leaving would mean not seeing Jack or more importantly Alex!

Now we get to Alex.....we get some interesting thoughts of Alex from Lila (fresh from the shower with no shirt!!).  He's Jack's best friend since childhood. They joined special ops together and are on a mission to avenge the murder of Jack and Lila's mother. He's been a constant in all their lives and obviously made the biggest impression on Lila's.  Alex is by all elements the hot male lead - with and without a shirt! I am thankful that Sarah did not write him as so many male leads lately have.....soppy and gooey and lovey dovey!!  Alex is strong, determined and focused.  There is a sweet side but one that is not constantly revealed (hmmm like a normal 22yo male!).

Let's bring in the other characters....Demos, Suki, Nate, Key, Harvey, Bill, Alicia, Ryder and Amber - the original group of hunted that The Unit (Jack and Alex's spesh ops team) are seeking out.  The information the unit work on is that Demos is the one who killed Jack and Lila's mum.  Each one has an x-men ability - all of which are pretty cool and would be rather handy in most situations!!! My favorite out of this bunch would be Suki - sneaky mind reading Suki!  Gotta watch your head around her. Her conversations will make for humorous reading - especially when she answers out loud to questions she hears from within someones mind!!

So overall..........I thoroughly enjoyed reading HUNTING LILA by SARAH ALDERSON. It was nicely paced, complete with romance, action and super powers!  It wasn't a "heavy" read where I was exhausted afterwards - just the right blend of everything and the right speed to leave me wanting more of what Sarah has to offer.

ENJOY!
