Will's POV - Clockwork Angel Holy Water Scene by Cassandra Clare

Cassandra Clare promised , upon reaching 40,000 twitter followers she would write Will's POV during the infamous  Holy Water Scene from Clockwork Angel, the link was tweeted. Here it is...

Of Loss

Of Loss: Will’s perspective on the events of Clockwork Angel, page 285-292

Will Herondale was burning.

This was not the first time he had consumed vampire blood, and he knew the pattern of the sickness. First there was a feeling of giddiness and euphoria, as if one had drunk too much gin — the brief period of pleasant drunkenness before the morbs set in. Then pain, starting at the toes and fingertips, working its way up as if lines of gunpowder had been laid across his body and were burning their way toward his heart.

He had heard the pain was not so great for humans: that their blood, thinner and weaker than Shadowhunter blood, did not fight the demon disease as Nephilim blood did. He was vaguely aware when Sophie came in with the holy water, splashing him with the cool stuff as she set the buckets down and went out again. Sophie’s hatred of him was as reliable as fog in London; he could feel it coming off her whenever she got near him. The force of it lifted him up onto his elbows now. He pulled a bucket close to him and upended it over his head, opening his mouth to swallow what he could.

For a moment, it doused the fire burning through his veins entirely. The pain receded, except for the throbbing in his head. He lay back down carefully, crooking an arm over his face to block the dim illumination coming from the low windows. His fingers seemed to trail light as they moved. He heard’s Jem’s voice in his head, scolding him for risking himself. But the face he saw against his eyelids wasn’t Jem.

She was looking at him. The very darkest voice of his conscience, the reminder that he could protect no one, and last of all himself. Looking the way he had the last time he had seen her; she never changed, which was how he knew she was a figment of his imagination.

“Cecily,” he whispered. “Cecy, for the love of God, let me be.”

“Will?” That startled him; she appeared to him often, but rarely spoke. She reached her hand out, and he would have reached for her, too, had not the clang and clatter of metal brought him out of his reverie. He cleared his throat.

“Back, are you, Sophie?” Will said. “I told you if you brought me another one of those infernal pails, I’d—”
“It’s not Sophie,” came the reply. “It’s me. Tessa.”

The hammering of his own pulse filled his ears. Cecily’s image faded and vanished against his eyelids. Tessa. Why had they sent her? Did Charlotte hate him as much as all that? Was this meant to be a sort of object lesson to her in the indignities and dangers of Downworld? When he opened his eyes he saw her standing in front of him, still in her velvet dress and gloves. Her dark curls were startling against her pale skin and her cheekbone was freckled, lightly, with blood, probably Nathaniel’s.

Your brother, he knew he should say. How is he? It must have been a shock to see him. There is nothing worse than seeing someone you love in danger.

But it had been years, and he had learned to swallow the words he wanted to say, transform them. Somehow they were talking about vampires, about the virus and how it was transmitted. She gave him the pail with a grimace — good, she should be disgusted by him — and he used it again to quench the fire, to still the burning in his veins and throat and chest.

“Does that help?” she asked, watching him with her clear gray eyes. “Pouring it over your head like that?”

Will imagined how he must look to her, sitting on the floor with a bucket over his head, and made a strangled noise, almost a laugh. Oh, the glamour of Shadowhunting! The warrior life he had dreamed of as a child!

“The questions you ask . . .” he began. Someone else, someone not Tessa, might have perhaps apologized for asking but she only stood still, watching him like a curious bird. He did not think he had ever seen someone with eyes the color of hers before: it was the color of gray mist blowing in from the sea in Wales.

You could not lie to someone with eyes that reminded you of your childhood.

“The blood makes me feverish, makes my skin burn,” he admitted. “I can’t get cool. But, yes, the water helps.”

“Will,” Tessa said. When he looked up again, she seemed to be haloed by light like an angel, though he knew it was the vampire blood blurring his vision. Suddenly she was moving toward him, gathering her skirts out of the way to sit by him on the floor. He wondered why she was doing that, and realized to his own horror that he had asked her to. He imagined the vampire disease in his body, breaking down his blood, weakening his will. He knew, intellectually, that he had drunk enough holy water to kill the disease before it could burrow into his bones, and that he could not put his lack of control down to the sickness. And yet — she was so close to him, close enough that he could feel the heat radiating from her body.

“You never laugh,” she was saying. “You behave as if everything is funny to you, but you never laugh. Sometimes you smile when you think no one is paying attention.”

He wanted to close his eyes. Her words went through him like the clean slice of a seraph blade, lighting his nerves on fire. He’d had no idea she had observed him so closely, or so accurately. “You,” he replied. “You make me laugh. From the moment you hit me with that bottle. Not to mention the way that you always correct me. With that funny look on your face when you do it. And the way you shouted at Gabriel Lightwood. And even the way you talked back to de Quincey. You make me . . .”

His voice trailed off. He could feel the cold water trickling down his back, over his chest, against his heated skin. Tessa sat only inches from him, smelling of powder and perfume and perspiration. Her damp curls curled against her cheeks, and her eyes were wide on him, her pale pink lips slightly parted. She reached up to push back a lock of her hair, and, feeling like he was drowning, he reached out for her hand. “There’s still blood,” he said, inarticulately. “On your gloves.”

She began to draw away, but Will would not let her go; he was drowning, still, drowning, and he could not release her. He turned her small right hand over. He had the strongest desire to reach for her entirely, to pull her against him and fold her in his arms, to encompass her slim, strong body with his. He bent his head, glad she could not see his face as the blood rushed up into it. Her gloves were ragged, torn where she had clawed at her brother’s manacles. With a flick of his fingers, he opened the pearl buttons that kept her glove closed, baring her wrist.
He could hear himself breathing. Heat spread through his body — not the unnatural heat of vampire sickness, but the more ordinary flush of desire. The skin of her wrist was translucently pale, the blue veins visible beneath. He could see the flutter of her pulse, feel the warmth of her breath against his cheek. He stroked the softness of her wrist with the tips of his fingers and half-closed his eyes, imagining his hands on her body, the smooth skin of her upper arms, the silkiness of the legs hidden beneath her voluminous skirts. “Tessa,” he said, as if she had the slightest idea the effect she was having on him. There were women who might have, but Tessa was not one of them. “What do you want from me?”

“I—I want to understand you,” she whispered.
The thought was quite horrifying. “Is that really necessary?”

“I’m not sure anyone does understand you,” she breathed, “except possibly Jem.”

Jem. Jem had given up on understanding him long ago, Will thought. Jem was a study in how you could love someone entirely without understanding them at all. But most people were not Jem.

BOOK REVIEW - CLOCKWORK ANGEL

By : Cassandra Clare
Published By : Walker Books
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback 478, Pages

RATING 5 STARS!!! Just love Cassandra's writing!!

Book Blurb: Taken From Goodreads

Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: Jem, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa.

As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

BOOK REVIEW:

I was just about to hunt down my post man when 'Clockwork Angel' finally landed on my doorstep. Expect a nice big healthy looking book to read. I found ,when reading until the wee hours of the morning , ( I had trouble putting it down)  that these big books can smack you in the face when your hands give way when you suddenly go unconcious. Mind you the frightful way you wake up once it hits your face is enough to give you a few more hours of reading..lol!!!

Character's:

Will Herondale: Shadowhunter. He is your sometimes a bit cranky, main male character who often reminded me of Jace with his smart mouth and wit and always up for a fight,  (from TMI series). Do I have a theory there..well I may just , but will keep to myself . Will is the guy who will be there for you, if he likes you. He tries to not show that side of him. He is hiding something and someone of interest is named in the book. I have my theory there too....* wiggles eyebrows* Cassandra has only mentioned her twice I think. I am sure book 2 will possibly bring her into play.

Tessa Gray : Female main character who has a bravado within her like Clary  ( TMI series ) but it grows with the book. Tessa has a power , which she was unaware of, but the charming ( said sarcastically) Dark Sisters helped her kindly understand it ( cough!!) Tessa is a ??? a question mark looms over her head as to exactly what category she would be placed in. Not Shadowhunter!!

James Carstairs or Jem as affectionately called : Shadowhunter.  I love Jem . Poor Jem has his own issues to deal with but looks to always help. The calm , soothing Mr Nice Guy character.

Jessamine : Shadowhunter but would rather settle down and leave the dirty work to the others. Jessamine needed a good slap from me several times during this book..lol!!

Henry : The Scientist, the inventor who is married to Charlotte. Does he love her like he should ??? or is he soo caught up in all his inventions. I feel he is going to be the guy who , when he finally gets it right..lol!!  will be the inventor of all the items you see in TMI series. He just has to work the kinks out, so to speak.

You will also meet Nathaniel ( Nate) , Sophie, Thomas, Charlotte ...plus more.
I loved the way a couple characters were brought up in Clockwork Angel that we meet in The Mortal Instruments series.

Cassandra has gone a lot darker in her story telling in this book. It can give you a little shock and go ewwww!!  ...lol!!!.... in some places, but that's Cassandra Clare always upping the stakes. What an original story, well I thought so as I have not read any of the Steampunk genre and that mix of Victorian era plus mechanics is quite exciting. It may be the late 1800's but the Steampunk genre allows for futuristic devices I suppose you could say. I am very curious about the little Clockwork Angel necklace as it is obviously something that will pop up more further into the series.

Poor Tessa was a bit of a pawn all round in this book, her acceptance of what she was and her ability to not back down from what was thrown at her was worthy of any Shadowhunter respect.

I loved the POWS!!!! in this book. I was getting rather bruised from Miss Clare as she powed!! me. I am a reader who can't help having theories as I read and she POWed me several times ( didn't see it coming). I often take notes and pg numbers for reference. I noted on a certain page which I will not disclose ( spoilers and all that) but my notes read, 'laughed out loud' well it was to do with a certain 'six- fingered Nigel'...that is all I will say.

I loved the politeness with which the era addressed each other..which made for some amusing dialogue. Cassandra always knows how to write her dialogue with funny/witty comments mingled with the action at hand. Poetry verse may pop out of somebodys mouth....or a bit of sarcasm amidst a fight scene.
I am soo looking forward to Clockwork Prince with Jem on the cover, but it will be a long wait:(
I had the fortune of reading City of Bones, City Of Ashes, City Of Glass one after the other ( TMI series) in rapid succession. To have to wait ...seems utterly appalling..lol!!! I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading this book and will sit waiting patiently for my next Cassandra Clare installment, being, City of Fallen Angels but ooo sooo long a wait:(

To the wee younger generation I salute you as you possibly will be able to read the entirity of both series in rapid succession one day..no delay, how exciting!!!!!!

QUOTES:

...."I think you ought to let me take poor Tessa into town to get some new clothes. Otherwise , the first time she takes a deep breath, that dress will fall right off her."
Will looked interested. "I think she should try that out now and see what happens."

"She's dead,"said Jem.
"Are you certain?"Will could not take his eyes off the woman's face.........He moved closer to her and placed a hand on her arm.........
"Well, she's not responding to my advances,"he observed more brightly than he felt, "so she must be dead."

"And Will. Handsome enough, but behaves like a lunatic half the time; it's as if he were brought up by savages. He has no respect for anyone or anything, no concept of the way a gentleman is supposed to behave. I suppose it's because he's Welsh."

"Oh God, " she said in a soft whisper to Jem. "I ---- my heart's not beating. I feel as if I've died. Jem ---"
He stroked her hand, carefully , soothingly, and looked up at her ............"You're alive, "he said, in a voice so soft only she could hear it.......

"Will spread his arms wide. On his knees, grinning like a demon, blood dripping from his mouth, he barely looked human himself. "Come and get me."

"Will , blood still dripping from his chin, looked at Jem with eyebrows raised. "Nice throw,"he said.
Jem shook his head. "You bit de Quincey, "he said. "you fool..........
"I had no choice,"said Will. "He was choking me."
"I know," Jem said. "But really, Will . Again?"

"You never laugh, "she said. "You behave as if everything is funny to you, but you never laugh. Sometimes you smile when you think no one is paying attention."

"Tessa,"he said. "what do you want from me?"
He was still stroking the inside of her wrist, his touch doing odd delicious things to her skin and nerves. her voice shook when she spoke. "I ---I want to understand you."

For a moment their mouths pressed hotly together, Will's free hand tangling in her hair. Tessa gasped............
......."God in heaven ,"he whispered. "what was that?"

CLOCKWORK ANGEL BOOK TRAILER RELEASED

I can't even begin to tell you how much I love Cassandra Clare's writing. Pure brilliance!!!! Her imagination is truly inspiring to any writer of any genre. I am bouncing up and down waiting to read Clockwork Angel( The Infernal Devices #1 ) and City of Fallen Angels ( The Mortal Instruments #4). I simply can't get enough of her Mortal Instruments characters . I adore Jace, Clary and Alec, Isabelle , Luke, Simon ( witty/funny ) Magnus Bane and all the sidekick characters. Just a whole lot of reading fun for all ages.

In Clockwork Angel we meet Will, Tessa and Jem, no doubt there are more but I have refrained from reading too much as I want to enjoy the reading pleasure of Cassandra's newest series. I understand that Cassandra has written TMI ( The Mortal Instruments) and TID ( The Infernal Devices prequel to TMI) so that you don't have to read TMI first just because it was first to be written. We have been told to read CWA (Clockwork Angel) between City Of Glass and City of Fallen Angels as we will understand COFA better as references made in CWA that we need to understand possibly before reading COFA's. (phew!! got that out:D)

I learnt a new word 'steampunk'. The meaning ( taken from Wikipedia) is:

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and speculative fiction, that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes fictional works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used — usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era Britain — but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, often featuring futuristic technology as the people of this historical period would have envisioned it to look like, i.e. based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer, but occurring at an earlier date.

Clockwork Angel , is of the 'steampunk' genre.

CASSANDRA CLARE LIVE CHAT 2 NEW BOOKS MORTAL INSTRUMENTS SERIES!!!

CASSANDRA'S LIVE CHAT 4th August 2010

I've just spent a wonderful hour listening to Cassandra Clare's live chat on USTREAM. I will note the information I learnt.

2 !!!! MORE BOOKS IN MORTAL INSTRUMENTS SERIES
CITY OF LOST SOULS to be released May 2012
CITY OF HEAVENLY FIRE to be released September 2013!!!

CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS  to be released April 5th 2011.

WOW!!! There were 4,000 participating in the chat!!
The average time it takes for Cassandra to write a book is 1 year. She spent 2-2.5years writing City of Bones.
Cassandra was asked a fun question: Which of her characters would she like to meet?
Answer: Magnus Bane as he throws the most parties.
The book covers, City of Bones ( Jace), City of Ashes ( Clary), City of Glass ( Sebastian). The models used for the person were photographed, painted over , photo shopped.  Jace's image on cover of  ''City of Bones'' , was actually 2 people.

Cassandra  didn't reveal many details about the upcoming sequels in The Mortal Instruments series, she did however say,  that the main antagonist they will face is someone who has been mentioned (but no one seems to have correctly guessed who that is yet). Hmmmm..puzzling. There will be a new Inquisitor and new Consul as you need those. I personally wouldn't be putting my hand up for Inquisitor job..they don't seem to survive very well. I personally am sooo looking forward to reading more about Jace ( yummy) and Clary, Simon, Isabelle, Alec and Magnus, Luke , Jocelyn, Shadow Hunters and Downworlders, Runes and steles some vampires thrown in ..just magical creative writing.

Time lapse between City of Glass and City of Fallen Angels is 2 months.
1 new male and 1 new female character will be introduced into City of Fallen Angels who may impact relationships. ( exciting!!)

Clockwork Angel was originally called Clockwork Kingdom but changed as Tessa wears a Clockwork Angel pendant.
Clockwork Angel has 2 more books in series: Clockwork Prince and Clockwork Princess.
Will is on the front cover of Clockwork Angels. Jem will be on front cover of Clockwork Prince and Tessa will be on front cover of Clockwork Princess.

If you notice all The Mortal Instruments books have the characters face horizontally missing on covers. Clockwork Angel , Will's face is side on , not fully shown. So keeping with theme of not showing faces.
Clockwork Angel book trailer may be released next week.

On Cassandra's USTREAM page on Facebook will be the widget countdowns to all her books.

To read more about announcement for 5th and 6th books  visit The Mortal Instruments website http://www.mortalinstruments.com/mortalseries.html  or Cassandra's live journal http://cassandraclare.livejournal.com/

To view the 1 hour archived chat with Cassandra Clare click on link below.

Did any of my questions get answered..nope..LOL!! But it was an excellent live chat, worth watching. At one stage over 720 viewers. Rather hilarious end to the live chat when bless they didn't know how to turn off the chat. This may not be shown on the archived show. Over 450 viewers stayed and listened to them whispering ..lol!! Myself being one of them..sorry it was too funny. The funniest part was when the Clockwork Angel poster was put in front of computer screen to hide them whilst they tried to work out what to do. TRUE STORY!!!
