BOOK REVIEW - SPIRIT by BRIGID KEMMERER - ELEMENTAL # 3 - YA PARANORMAL ROMANCE - ALLEN & UNWIN

By: Brigid Kemmerer
Published By : Allen & Unwin
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback received from publisher for honest review, 301 Pages

RATING: 5 STRONG, GAME CHANGING STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He has learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can't seem to afford any allies.

He's up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.

Then there's Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She's not hostile. She's bold. Funny. Hot. But she's got an agenda, too.

With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down - which means he'll have to find someone he can trust.

POWER. ENEMIES. EVERYWHERE.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I have to say I LOVE this YA paranormal romance series. I have been far too long without being in Brigid’s head and all her well thought out characters.

I am back!

Hunter, I loved you in Storm, and I loved you even more in Spirit. You are flawed, vulnerable and misunderstood. I felt for you as a mum. I wanted to give grandpa a kick up the tush.

Michael Merrick, oh did you shine. You became what Hunter needed in his life.

Gabriel, you had a bromance with Hunter in Spark and then you turned all fight club, but then you came back.

Nick, you are such a friend. You don’t judge quite so harshly.

I loved this instalment. Brigid writes her characters with such depth, I get totally immersed in her story telling. One of my fave YA paranormal series.

I have to admit, I had an O.M.G moment. I kept staring at the page thinking, Brigid is playing with me. But nope, she was deadly serious. I did a bit of spluttering. I saw the scene so well in my head. I was a little shocked.

I normally write lots of notes and page numbers for quotes, but I didn’t come up for air while reading Spirit. I kept telling myself to take some notes, but I kept reading rather feverishly.

A very good villain named Silver, kept me on my toes and Calla, man, she is a piece of work. They pulled it off very well. With the villains of this series, I feel like they have been brain washed from a young age and they believe in everything they have been told and trained to do. They don’t stop to look at the facts, they are driven to complete their mission and succeed at all costs. They are always around the same age as the main characters or just a bit older, but they believe in what they have to do, with few exceptions, like Hunter. They don’t blink an eye at what they have to do. The power of their peers to convince them of what needs to be done , no matter what. You can see how little children in war torn countries can without blinking an eye handle a weapon and then they grow up to be hard, unemotional adults believing in the cause they have been taught to not question. They become soldiers at such a young age, they know no different.

I highly recommend this brilliant YA series. Adults can enjoy it as much as teenagers.

BOOK COVER REVEAL - SACRIFICE by BRIGID KEMMERER - ELEMENTALS # 5 - KENSINGTON TEEN - YA PARANORMAL ROMANCE

By: Brigid Kemmerer
Published By: Kensington Teen
Releases: 30th September 2014
Details: Paperback, 432 Pages

Blurb: Goodreads

One misstep and they lose it all. For the last time.

Michael Merrick is used to pressure.

He’s the only parent his three brothers have had for years. His power to control Earth could kill someone if he miscalculates. Now an Elemental Guide has it out for his family, and he’s all that stands in the way.

His girlfriend, Hannah, gets that. She’s got a kid of her own, and a job as a firefighter that could end her life without a moment’s notice.

But there are people who have had enough of Michael’s defiance, his family’s “bad luck.” Before he knows it, Michael’s enemies have turned into the Merricks’ enemies, and they’re armed for war.

They’re not interested in surrender. But Michael isn’t the white flag type anyway. There will be blood on the ground tonight…

*****

Isn't this a beautiful cover?

Michael's book. YAY!!

I am a little behind on this series, I have Spirit and Secret to read. I am excited I have two books to read together. I may have planned that.

Brigid is a brilliant YA author. I truly love this series. You can read all my reviews HERE  They are in order of recently read. So just scroll down and start from the start.

If you want to read a really cool YA series, this is one to pick up. Brigid really writes these lads very well. My favorite lad keeps changing. So , I have to say they are all my favorites.

This is Kensington Teen's cover, us Aussies get a different cover. I haven't seen that about the traps yet. Allen & Unwin are the publishers for us Aussies.

This series on Goodreads, alone, has an average of 4 stars with 25,500 ratings. Pretty darn impressive. That doesn't take into consideration all the other book sites. It is a guideline for how good this series is.

BOOK REVIEW - BREATHLESS by BRIGID KEMMERER - THE ELEMENTAL # 2.5 - NOVELLA - KENSINGTON TEEN - 5 STARS!!

By: Brigid Kemmerer
Published By: Kensington Teen
Released : May 2013
Details: Netgalley Review, Digital, 53 Pages

RATING: 5 BRING ON NICK'S BOOK STARS!!

Blurb: Goodreads

Too many secrets. Not enough time.

Nick Merrick is supposed to be the level-headed one. The peacemaker. Since it’s just him and his three hotheaded brothers against the world, that’s a survival tactic.

But now he’s got problems even his brothers can’t help him survive.

His so-called girlfriend, Quinn, is going quick as mercury from daring to crazy. Meanwhile, Quinn’s dancer friend Adam is throwing Nick off balance, forcing him to recognize a truth he’d rather shove back into the dark.

He can feel it—-the atmosphere is sizzling. Danger is on the way. But whatever happens next, Nick is starting to find out that sometimes nothing you do can keep the peace.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

“Well,” said Adam, a slight smile on his lips.
“That was unexpected.”

I second that Adam. Ms Brigid, that was rather unexpected, lol!

I absolutely adored this novella.

What Brigid Kemmerer can do with a novella!

I really do believe she writes the best novellas, she wastes no words and you just simply want to keep reading. This is why I try, if they are accessible to Australia, to read novella’s that get sandwiched between books.

This was Brigid’s best novella in the Elemental series to date in my personal opinion. I wanted Nick’s novella to be a full blown book.
After tweeting Brigid, she said she was working on it now. Woot!

Awwwww Nick. I gotta say I did not see that coming until I started reading Breathless and I loved what I read.

I have to say the title is apt as I felt breathless watching Nick discover himself , and oh myyyyYYyyyy how Brigid wrote Nick’s story. It was a mixture of beautiful and nervousness for him.

I really liked how dance was used in this novella. Quinn is a bit of a mixed up cookie who has a bigger story to tell us I think. I liked where Brigid was taking us with a new character. He sounds like he will be rather yummy for Quinn and made quite the entrance.

I am loving Adam. I connected with him in this short novella. He has a kind heart.

I must say there was some sizzle in this wee little novella!

I always love the way Brigid uses the elements in her writing. She did it again in this novella bringing Nick’s Air element in beautifully.

I know there is more to come from Nick’s story as the brothers will be in the know at some stage. I feel a bit nervous for Nick with Gabriel.

“On the outside, you’re absolutely identical, but on the inside, it’s like you’re polar opposites.”

He sighed and ran his hand through his hair again. “Trust me, I know exactly what you mean.”

I am looking forward to more of Nick’s story. I am actually rather breathless for it.

Bring . It. On.

FAVE QUOTE:

“He’s not a dancer, Adam, this is Nick.” Adam. The name fit him like a chord strummed on a guitar.

By: Brigid Kemmerer
Published By: Allen & Unwin
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback for review, 338 Pages

RATING: 5 HOT GABRIEL STARS!!

Gabriel Merrick plays with fire. Literally.

Sometimes he can even control it. And sometimes he can’t. Like the fire that killed his parents.

Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel. Only he’s not doing it.

More than Gabriel’s pride is at stake -- this could cost him his family, maybe his life. And no one seems to hear him. Except a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans and keeps him totally off balance. Layne understands family problems, and she understands secrets. She has a few of her own.

Gabriel can’t let her guess about his brothers, about his abilities, about the danger that’s right at his heels. But there are some risks he can’t help taking.

The fuse is lit…

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

I sooooo LOVE Brigid’s YA voice. She draws the reader in from the first page. Her fictional story is so believable. I am there! I am a part of the story. The research she puts into her elements is noticeable.

In Storm , book # 1 , Chris who is paired up with water, is written so perfect. I ‘felt’ the Storm, the wind, the rain. Chris’ character felt very 3D.

In Spark, book # 2, Gabriel who is paired with fire, WOW! I thought Brigid did an even better job of the element Fire, her descriptive leaps off the page. I was in that fire, I was feeling that fire. Fire is living, talking. It speaks to Gabriel. It knows what Gabriel wants, needs.

WOW!

“Come. Play.”

Brigid’s male voice for all her boys is brilliant. She writes males so well. She writes ALL her characters so well. I have two teenage boys and a tween girl.

Brigid. Gets. Boys.

She knows how to bring them to life on paper, kicking, fighting, being stupid, lying, hurting and loving.

The brother dynamic, the twin dynamic, the friend dynamic, she writes it so well.

The scenes in this book, especially the fire scenes, visually were brilliant.

I love Simon and Layne. They brought something extra to this story.

Hunter. The bromance with Gabriel, I feel like Hunter is lonely, he and Gabriel fit nicely, but.....

The brothers Merrick are all getting older, even though the story time wise has only moved on a bit from Storm. Things are changing.

Gabriel and Nicky, the twins, there is a shift in their dynamic. It was kind of sad to watch it happen. No matter what, they are always ultimately in the end there for each other.

I loved the villain side to the story. Brigid is always good at keeping it fairly well hidden. We are throwing names about in our head, but in the end, she pulls a swifty on us. I love this!

Gabriel has an awesome voice. I love him to death. He has that rebel bad boy in him, but he has a lot of love to give and he knows how to use it right. He knows when he is wrong. It may take a while, but he figures it out. He carries a lot of blame and hurt.

Gabriel’s character really got under my skin. He made me laugh at his snark and he made me sad. He was trying so hard to figure it all out by himself. He doesn’t want to talk to Michael. Being in his head while he was working it all out, the pages turned, and I just wanted to give him a hug.

Michael. I love this guy. He didn’t ask to become the parent figure. A house of teenage boys, not an easy thing to keep guarded when they don’t make it easy. He just doesn’t complain. I got a big lump in my throat with a particular scene involving coffee and a game.

I am a little nervous for Hunter in Spirit, but I can’t wait. I am so looking forward to seeing how Hunter’s Spirit element is written . After reading the extract of Spirit at the end of Spark........eeeeeeeeeeep! That black page, it felt very dramatic!

I highly recommend Brigid’s Elementals series. I simply adore her YA voice it translates so well for adults to enjoy. I will be rather sad when there is no more to read.

Michelle

INTERVIEW with BRIGID KEMMERER

Michelle:  Hi Brigid, yes I am another Aussie fan, we get all fan girlie down here when we get onto an awesome book series. You have a wonderful YA voice in your writing but it also translates so well for adults to read and enjoy your writing. I love your writing and I am a lot older than a teenager , I actually have a couple teenagers myself.

I’ve been doing my regular “pre write the interview Q’s snoop”, to see what I shouldn’t be asking as it already may have been asked. I found out you live outside of Baltimore Maryland , Storm was your debut novel and you are working on a ‘super sekrit-projekt’. If two books had a baby named Storm the parents would be The Perfect Chemistry series by Simone Elkeles and the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward ( Niiicccccee!!)

Describing the Elemental ‘magic’ would be this mash up of a couple interviews you did and the response you gave. I liked this very simple to understand response you gave plus how you actually say it in Storm using Becca and Chris.

“Imagine a five pointed star in a circle. Everyone on earth lives inside that circle. People who fall on a branch of the star have a strong affinity for that element. People who fall on a point can control that element — the Elementals(Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit) . Unfortunately, this power makes Elementals marked for death, because the Guides — Elementals who fall on the fifth point, for Spirit — have decided that individuals with so much power are too dangerous to live. Those who fall directly on a point (like the Merrick brothers in STORM) can control that element.”

Michelle:  Brigid, thank you for taking the time to answer my Q & A’s , being a mum , wife, having a day job and being a successful writer with deadlines , is a busy day ..... repeat and rinse. Thank you for writing the tales of the Merrick brothers and Hunter for us to enjoy.

Brigid:  I can’t even begin to tell you how much I appreciate you doing your research before sending me interview questions!

Hehe!!  NERD ALERT!!!

Michelle:  As we are an Australian blog, I thought I would start by asking have you ever been to Australia ? If not, what is your impression of Australian people? You have chatted and friended many Australian bloggers. ( Is friended a word, lol?)

Brigid:  Friended is totally a word! :) I have never been to Australia, but all the people I’ve met on this publication journey have been so amazing that I tell my husband at least once a week, “We absolutely must visit there.” I tell him at least once a month that we should probably move there. :-P Seriously, you’re all amazing. I was trying to write an Aussie character into Spirit, but the guy turned out to be a total ass, and I just couldn’t do that to you all. So I made him French. No! OMG. I’m totally kidding.

Michelle:  What Aussie food would you love to try, or is there something you would not like to try?

Brigid:  Okay, so I was shocked that Outback Steakhouse in Australia serves American food. I mean, I’m pretty sure they serve American food here, too (I mean honestly), but that was one of those things that just about knocked me off my chair. I don’t eat seafood, so I probably wouldn’t try shrimp on the barbie. (Do you really call it that?)

Michelle:  OOoo Nooo, shrimp are these wee little things. When I fished the Murray river as a kid with my nan, we used them as bait. Prawns are what you put on the barbie :)

Michelle:  I have a friend who is an author in the UK and his wife is nicknamed ‘The Hacker’, most affectionately of course, she is his strongest and most honest critic. They have this great team thing going on. Do you have a team thing, with your hubby, in regards to your writing?

Brigid:  Yes! My husband is my best friend. I could not do this without him. So here, I’ll tell you a story. When I got the news that I had an offer for Storm, it was the same week I got a positive pregnancy test. (Big week!) I already had one son, who’d been an easy baby, so I wasn’t stressed about trying to meet deadlines with an infant in the house. Well, fast forward nine months. I was trying to write Spark and the novella Elemental, and my baby had terrible colic. At the same time, my husband was also taking some night classes to finish his degree. The baby was constantly screaming, and wouldn’t sleep more than 90 minutes at a stretch. The Kemmerer household was in a constant state of stress and frustration and exhaustion. Our marriage was really being strained pretty much as far as it could go. One night, my husband said, “Hey, why don’t we start having study dates? After we get the kids in bed, we’ll make a pot of coffee. You write, I’ll do school work, and we’ll help each other.” It was brilliant. Totally reminded me why I was so in love with this man.

Awwwwww...

Michelle:  If you could be a paranormal being for a day, what type of being would you like to be and what would you like to do?

Brigid:  I would love to have wings. The first story I wrote (in eighth grade) was about a boy with wings.

Michelle:  Is there anything that you keep as a reminder of how far you have come as an author? Do you keep a type of scrapbook to show your children when they are old enough to appreciate what their mum has achieved?

Brigid:  Hey, now that’s a great idea! I should start one! No, I don’t keep anything. But I constantly remind myself of where I was. I don’t ever want to forget.

Michelle:   Is there anything special you like to do when one of your books hits the shelf?

Brigid:  Sadly, I’m really not a celebration person. When I finish a book, people always ask, “What did you do to celebrate?” And my answer almost always is, “Um…I started the next one…?”

Michelle:  Here is one of my FAVE q’s I like to ask. Yes, it’s the music Q.

Would you please be able to give me a song that best describes:

Becca, Michael, Gabriel, Nicky , Chris and Hunter, each.

Brigid:  Oh wow, I don’t have a song for all of them. BUT! I do have a song that I’ve come to think of as the theme song for the Elemental series: Something Beautiful by NeedToBreathe

See this is why I LOVE asking this Q. I learn new songs. This is PERFECT!!!!!!!!

Michelle:  Spirit is the next book to hit the shelves May 2013. Would you please be able to give a quote from Spirit. We don’t need to know names, as in who said it, if possible? Please J

If not, cool.

Brigid:  Yes! I’ll share my favourite little snippet. Though please note that this is pre-editing and may change in the final edition:

Hunter kept trying to tell his own body that she was injured, that she was seeking warmth, that this had nothing to do with anything.

His body was replying, DUDE. SHE IS NOT WEARING PANTS.

* waggles eyebrows*

Michelle:  Thank you again Brigid for taking the time out of your uber , uber busy multi tasking day to answer my Q’s, it is much appreciated. See, I was dying to ask about the ‘Super sekrit projekt’, but I didn’t.......heheeeee!! Seriously, I am uber intrigued........

Brigid:  My pleasure! Thank you so much for having me! J

BOOK REVIEW - FEARLESS by BRIGID KEMMERER - ELEMENTAL # 1.5 - NOVELLA - K-TEEN - 4.5 HUNTER STARS!!

By: Brigid Kemmerer
Published By: K-Teen
Released: Available now
Details : Kindle , 59 Pages

RATING : 4.5 HUNTER STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Being a force of nature doesn’t keep you safe.

Hunter Garrity is used to watching his back. The kids at school sense something different about him. And they’re right.

Hunter has powers that have nothing to do with how hard he can throw a punch.

Maybe that’s what Clare Kasten is picking up. She’s shy, quiet, and intense, but she’s sought him out. There’s no telling what she wants from him.

But Hunter knows enough to sense a secret when it’s close. And getting close to Clare is a danger he’s ready to face…

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

Fearless is Hunter's little back story, pre tatts and piercings. I don't know how I feel about his father's ability to 'use' people. A lesson he wanted Hunter to learn. I did feel sad for Hunter's mum, and even Hunter's dad to a certain extent when he looked at women in that manner and Hunter's mum was clueless, but happy.

"Use them before they use you."

I liked this back story and I thought Clare was a bit 'off' with her quirky personality and interest in guns. She was an eager beaver.

We learn how much of an influence Hunter's father and Uncle Jay are in his life. They molded him to a certain extent or set the casing for his future to be poured into.

This is exactly what it is meant to be, just a small novella that I think gives the reader a fair bit of information. We know more about his father and uncle and we meet Casper. Hunter did indeed to a certain extent get played by a girl ,as his father warned him.

"You're about to teach yourself a lesson a lot more effectively than I ever could."

We see the moment when Hunter decides, enough is enough!

I'm about to crack Spark open and find out what the Merrick boys .......plus one, are up to.

The storm is coming.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

Batten down the hatches. ‘Storm’, was an incredible ride. The rain will be pelting your face, the wind whipping your hair into a frenzy, and the earth will shake.....errr.....literally, the boys are hot!

But, you have heard that already , I am sure.

Meet the Merrick brothers.... plus one. Michael, Gabriel, Nicky and Chris....plus New Kid, aka Hunter. I took a fancy to Hunter straight away. Sandy blond hair, streak of white, multiple ear piercings and eyebrow piercings, green eyes, lean, muscled arms....tattoos.... what? I am letting fictional aged self out for a good airing and fictional self had a wonderful time ogling in this book J

Happy days J

Michael is the ‘parent type’, because he has to be. Gabriel and Nicky are twins. Gabriel is more sin. Nicky is the one that comes along for the ride and gets into whatever trouble Gabriel is chasing. The boys don't want Michael playing the parent card. They want him as their brother. Michael has to be the responsible one.

Chris, he is in trouble straight from the word go......

Enter Becca. A few moves from self defence classes and she is jumping into the action. She never really had a chance not to get mixed up with these lads. Becca has gotten herself a reputation and it has stuck like mud, thick, dripping mud that won’t wipe off easily. She has a kind heart and she sees trouble and jumps in without assessing the danger until she is knee deep.

It's a bit like watching tennis with Becca, Chris and Hunter. I was the ball. Was I with Chris or was I with Hunter..... oh the conundrum. Hunter, caring, a good listener, all new age guy with his crystals and stones. Chris was there when it counted.

Was I in or out?

Earth, Fire, Air, Water, and New Kid. Let the tension, trust issues, fights, friendships and danger begin..... and the kisses. Becca finds herself mixed up in a whole lot more than she bargained for, and she can't just walk away.

Seth and Tyler are the pains in the butt of the storyline, they seem to land on their feet every time they seek out the brothers to cause pain.

Monica , Tommy and Drew, all were in need of a good ‘stinky dead fish slap’ from me. Some needed more than one slap!

Everybody is suffering . Everybody is hiding pain. Who can be trusted and who is to blame?

Brigid had me hoping the whole book that I wasn’t onto something,  it was riding on my shoulder. I kept turning the pages, hoping. I won’t say if I was right or not but I got slammed in the face with a couple awesome OMG moments that I just did not see coming, and I was quietly high fiving Brigid.

I LOVE nothing more than getting blind sided, makes me very happy.

Brigid will draw you from the word go, into her story. You will love this band of brothers, no matter how much they argue or keep Michael in the dark, isolate him because he had to draw the ‘parent' card. He has no choice, he is the glue that keeps them altogether, even though they are making it very hard for him, resenting him at times. I did feel sad for Michael. He has lost as much as his brothers, carries more guilt, and to boot draws the sucky ‘parent’ card.

I loved Brigid’s writing. How she wrote the boys and their drawing on their power. The feel you got when reading, the wind ,rain, and earth etc. I thought her writing was very good with making us ‘feel’ water and everything that went with the scene with Chris and his brothers, depending on who was drawing on what. I really felt it was all happening around me, the descriptive was really cool. I could feel the Storm coming, I was a part of it when it hit.

I am eager to crack open ‘Spark’, to see what Gabriel the cheeky rebel is getting up to. I have also bought ‘Fearless’ the novella.

Yup , the rip cord is pulled and I am addicted to Brigid’s character’s. I’m very interested to see where she takes Hunter.......’time will tell’.

Will I be in or out?

FAVE QUOTE:

Earth, Fire, Air, Water – they are more than you dream.

As an air Elemental, 17-year-old Emily Morgan doesn’t have much power. That’s okay—she knows what happens to kids who do.

Like Michael Merrick. He’s an earth Elemental, one with enough power to level cities. Which makes him sexy. Dangerous. And completely off limits. At least according to Emily’s family.

But her summer job puts her in close contact with Michael, and neither of them can help the attraction they feel. When forces of nature like theirs collide, one misstep could get someone killed. Because Emily’s family doesn’t just want her to stay away from him.

They want him dead.

BOOK REVIEW:

I haven't read anything in this series other than this prequel novella which is set 5 years prior to book #1 titled 'Storm'.

This is our introduction to Michael, the eldest Merrick boy, primarily. We are also introduced to the twelve year old twins, Gabriel and Nick and also Chris.

Michael Merrick has a lot on his shoulders. He is a 'Pure' Elemental. Earth is his mojo.

This little entree novella, really wet my appetite for more of these boys, now I realise 'Storm' is set five years later , I think the Merrick boys are going to be a handsome handful. Might I also add, very popular.

I am hoping Emily stays in Michael's life as she too is an Elemental, she can control Air or in this book , it's more of a breeze.

I think Tyler is going to be a handful, Emily's brother, as her family are not liking Michael. I think their fear of his power is getting out of hand.

This little novella was over far too quickly and I want more. I had the opportunity to read an excerpt from 'Storm' , but I chose to wait. It was bad enough this prequel finishing too soon, cause you just want more.........

I highly recommend reading this novella, if you are unsure about how high to put this series on your TBR list...I can guarantee you will be sliding it to the top. I know I am in for the long haul.

Brigid's writing captures the readers interest in so few pages. I will be all grabby, grabby for 'Storm' , due for release April 24th 2012 for US and apparently May for us Aussies.

I wanted to add this most awesome character interview with the Merrick Boys from Brodies Page I have to admit I kinda fell in love with the boys reading this.
