HAPPY RELEASE DAY BOOK BLITZ & GIVEAWAY - GOING UNDER & SHALLOW by GEORGIA CATES - CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

Jesse Boone is a self-proclaimed bad boy and doesn’t march to the beat of anyone’s drum but his own. Growing up in less than desirable circumstances has made him no stranger to the hard knock life but his determination to leave it behind is fervent. He sees an opportunity to snag a college football scholarship when he’s transferred to East Franklin High School but Forbes Henderson has other plans. The player Jesse intends to replace doesn’t plan on giving up his spot as starting quarterback so a rivalry is born. Jesse is determined to show his nemesis that he’s not only going to take his position as first string quarterback, he’s going to take his girl, too.

Claire Deveraux is perfection at its best. She’s beautiful, intelligent, and unaware she just became Jesse Boone’s conquest to settle a score with her boyfriend. Like her flawless performance as the perfect daughter and student, Claire’s production of being the perfect girlfriend has everyone fooled, except Jesse Boone. She fears this tattooed bad boy will see her secret desire to explore his crude threats and promises of rocking her perfect world. If she decides to give in to one uninhibited moment with Jesse, will she learn too late that it was all an act of vengeance or will Jesse learn that the taste of first love is sweeter than that of revenge?

Claire Deveraux’s POV

Once we’re started on the assignment, I catch Jesse staring at me. Suddenly self-conscious, I run my palms down each of my cheeks. “What are you looking at? Do I have something on my face?”

“You do.” He reaches out, grazing the back of his fingers against my cheek. “You’ve got a little beautiful right there.”

The heat rises because I’m not used to such direct compliments. Forbes doesn’t do romantic. He’s too busy planning how he’ll get what he wants from me.

“You want to kiss me, don’t you?” God, do I ever.

He’s daring—and I love it—so I decide to return the boldness. “You have no idea how much.”

He isn’t going to back down. I see his determination but as I recall, he warned me about that. “I bet I have a pretty good idea since I probably want to kiss you just as much. Maybe more.”

We’re alone—most likely safe from being seen—but not guaranteed so it makes it so much more exciting. The thrill of being caught by someone makes my heart pump faster. I look into his pale blue eyes, willing him to lean forward and take the kiss I’m prepared to give him.

“I’ll do it,” he threatens.

“Then stop talking about it.” I know the sure-fire way to seal the deal. “I dare you.”

Bingo. I see it in his eyes. He’s in full-on badass mode. “I warned you I don’t back down.”

“That’s what I’m counting on.”

I imagine him leaning forward to steal a quick kiss but he doesn’t. He takes my hand and leads me across the library. He looks in every direction before opening a door and pulling me into a storage room I didn’t know existed. He shuts the door behind us and locks it.

Oh God. What’s he going to do?

He places his hands around my waist and pulls me close, our faces almost touching. “Believe me yet?”

“No. I need more proof.”

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

He places sweet, soft kisses on my lips and my legs threaten to crumble beneath me. His mouth migrates to my neck and up to my ear where he sucks my lobe. I let him because I know the door is locked.

Nick Hawke wants his car fast and his girls faster. He blows through them quicker than his muscle car races down the drag strip in Collinsville and he wouldn’t have it any other way. He’s determined to avoid the devastation he has watched his father endure in the aftermath of his mother’s abandonment. He believes there is no room in his life or his heart for a relationship lasting more than one night. He seeks happiness in things that won’t let him down––fast cars, adrenaline highs, and one night stands. All of that changes when he unexpectedly runs into an old friend and is introduced to Payton Archer, the first girl he ever wanted for more than a night. There’s only one catch––she’s completely immune to him and his smooth talking ways.

Payton Archer is looking for love––the true, mad, deep kind. She’s given up on finding it, at least until she leaves for college because she’s certain that is where she’ll find the ideal guy to fit into her perfect world. Her summer plans include nothing more than three uneventful months of fun but it turns out to be anything but ordinary when Payton meets Nick Hawke, one of Jesse’s old Collinsville friends. She’s shocked by her immediate and intense attraction for “Hawke” because nothing about him is on her checklist for the perfect love. Sure, he’s hot and sexy but he comes from Collinsville and that is definitely not on her list of prerequisites. Everything about him makes Payton’s heart speed. He’s exciting and dangerous but his fast car and chance taking aren't what scares Payton the most. It’s the way Nick Hawke makes her feel every time he looks at her. Can Payton find the courage to leave the safe, shallow end of love and risk going under completely?

EXCERPT
Nick Hawke’s POV

I lick my lips as I look at her shiny gloss, imagining how soft and slick her mouth would be against mine. I’ve never wanted to lean in for a kiss so badly in all my life. Being at the top of this Ferris wheel with her couldn’t be more perfect but I can’t do it. I’m too scared.
I’m Nick Hawke—a sexpert and fearless daredevil—but that doesn’t matter. I’m too chickenshit to kiss this girl because she’s wonderful and perfect and different—everything I never knew I wanted—so I don’t want to blow it by pushing too hard, too fast.
The wheel stops to load another couple. “I’m sorry I didn’t say this already, but thank you for taking care of my drunk ass last night. I didn’t think I’d get wasted after two drinks. Guess I drank them too fast.”
I reach for her hand and give it a squeeze. “I didn’t mind. It was my pleasure—puke and all.”
She shakes her head while looking down. “Liar.” She laughs. “The whole thing with Cooper was stupid. I guess I tried to make him be my version of Jesse. I know that’s a weird thing to say. I’m sort of messed up that way.” She looks up at me. “I’m sorry. I don’t know why I told you that.”
Claire’s right. She’s seeing her relationship with Cooper for what it is.
All the carriages are loaded so we rise and fall as the wheel rotates. A gust of wind picks up as we soar to the top. A wild strand of hair blows into her face, sticking in her lip gloss. I can’t resist the excuse to touch her so I reach forward to set it free.
All I can taste and breathe is this moment with her. Our time together will be over soon and I don’t want to go home without telling her I have to see her again.
I twirl the wild strand around my fingers before tucking it behind her ear. “You told me you wouldn’t go out with me because you were looking for something different, but you’re here with me now.”
A painful expression crosses her face. “You’ve been really sweet to me and I’ve had a wonderful time with you tonight—as a friend—but we can never be more than that. You’ve gone through too many girls.”
“I used protection every time without fail. I swear I haven’t caught anything, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
She’s blushing. Shit. I think I’ve embarrassed her. “I’m glad to hear that you had the good sense to practice safe sex but that’s not what I mean. I’m looking for something lasting and you’re looking for your next romp.”
She has this all wrong. “I know that’s what you think, but I’m not.”
“You are, and I’m a quest. I won’t flip on to my back for you and it’s driving you crazy because it’s new territory.”
“That’s not true.”
“It’s only a matter of time before you grow tired of me and move on to the next chase. If we leave well enough alone, we’ll walk away from this unscathed. We might even be friends.”
I want to be so much more than friends. I want Payton Archer for reasons other than sex.
I am being honest with myself about what I really want for the first time in a long time.
“You’re wrong, but it’s going to take a while for you to see that. In the meantime, I’ll take your friendship.”

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I do enjoy reading Lauren Dane’s works. Going Under is the 3rd book in the Bound By Magick series.

Gage Garrity is a guy I have liked since book one. I think he is a stand up guy and very loyal to Clan Owen.

I like very much how Lauren writes very strong women. Molly Ryan is a strong woman who at times can be too strong for her own good.

Molly Ryan has lost her job, her business, because she is a witch. Lauren really brings home how difficult it is when you are different. Humans are killing out of fear of the unknown. It really made me think about other urban fantasy reads I have read where there are witches, werewolves etc living among humans.

I did ask myself why the witches and Others were letting themselves be taken down by humans who are powerless. What I mean to say is, Others are living in very dangerous times among humans, but they didn’t seem to be trying to protect themselves with wards etc. They were getting picked off, pretty easily.

Sitting ducks.

Lauren does give us a reason, but it felt a bit wobbly. I know it was going against everything Molly was trying to do for Clan Owen and all Others in general. I mean families were being attacked, shot. What family wouldn’t release what power they could to stop somebody harming their loved ones, whether you are human or Other. It’s nature to protect those you love.

This part of the story really took over with the romance being more right at the end, but of course there was playtime before then.

* waggles eyebrows*

I would have loved Molly’s job that she has taken on, to have allowed for more story line between Gage and Molly, developing their connection. I know Gage is brave and her bodyguard. I know what Molly is doing for Clan Owen is very important to her.

Gage takes his job very seriously, Molly took her job very seriously. There was a lot of seriousness going on. There was smexi, but everything was serious.

Faine was a wonderful addition. He is Simon’s brother. I am looking forward to Wild Darkness , releasing 5th November 2013. It is Faine’s book. I really liked Faine’s character in Going Under.

I really do enjoy Lauren’s writing and I love her Brown Siblings series...a lot!

I wasn’t feeling this book as much as some of Lauren’s works. I had to have a sit and think what it was. I think there is a lot of conversation in Going Under that slowed the book down.

The action is limited, but that is ok, but I needed something else to plump the story line up.

I like the world Lauren has built for her characters but I think sometimes her writing in this series can get caught up in a lot of conversation which slows the pace down.

I think what I am trying to say, is the big conversations can take away from other things that can be going on and sometimes one person will say it and then further along it is getting repeated more or less by another character or the same character is talking to another character. I find that repetitive. I don’t come across many authors that do this. It’s a repeat speech.

Maybe too much explaining?

For me personally, and I am just one opinion in a sea of no doubt opposite opinion’s to mine, but I want this series to be more alive with action and less lengthy descriptive and lengthy conversation that can get a bit mundane, for me, personally. I do like the world Lauren has built, I do like the Alpha lads and I do like the women aren’t stupid and inept. They aren’t bed bunnies, they are more, much more. I am finding it hard to get out exactly how I am feeling about this series as for me, it has sooo much potential to be more, for me.

But, hey, I am just one fish in a big ocean of readers. Everybody else could be quite happy the way it is. I’m not meaning to be disrespectable, but I feel like something is holding me back from raving about this series.

GUEST POST

Sponge

People like to ask me where I get my ideas for stories.

“From you,” I reply, and they look confused. And then the confusion turns to suspicion.

“Oh really?” they ask tentatively.

“Mmhmm,” I reply. I drum my fingers on my writer’s notebook. (Well, okay. I don’t have a writer’s notebook. I store everything in my head. So I drum my fingers on my head.)

“Sooo . . . what do you have in there?” they ask.

“You’ll find out in my next book.” I smile and wink.

They’re getting scared. “Were you at Kroger last week? Did you see me in the bakery? I swear to God I didn’t do what you think you saw! It was somebody else! Please don’t put that in your book!!”

“Oh, I saw you all right. And it’s sooo going in my book,” I reply.

“You writers!” they scream. “You think you can slap a disclaimer on your books and write whatever you want!”

“Can’t we?”

The truth may shock you. It may scare you. It may piss you off. But your favorite writer? Well, she most likely got some ideas in that favorite book of yours from spying on people. Maybe even you. That’s right. Flat-out, creepy-but-trying-to-look-nonchalant-about-it spying. And it happens every second of the day. You’re just not aware of it.

We’re sponges, see? We soak up everything we come into contact with. Smells, sounds, tastes, conversations. We store these tidbits away (either in our heads or in notebooks) to later develop into characters or plot ideas. Because the bottom line is this: we can only infuse so much of ourselves and our experiences into our characters and stories before they turn utterly tedious or narcissistic. One of my favorite things about Brooke in Going Under is that (aside from her foul mouth) that girl is nothing like me. (And for the record, I like her a whole lot better!)

So who do I spy on? Where do my ideas come from? Well, all over. I’m acquiring ideas all the time (and I should really start writing them down instead of relying so heavily on my memory). One I’ve been trying to work into a story for a long time comes from an acquaintance who described a church for me she used to attend. One located in the deep South. One with a preacher who liked to stand up at the pulpit and call people out for their transgressions during the service:

“Pete! Jimmy saw you down at Pumpkin’s Bar last Friday! Now we all of us in this congregation know that you have an alcohol problem, son! So what were you doin’ at Pumpkin’s?”

All eyes on Pete. Poor, poor Pete.

“Darlene! I done told you to stop gossipin’ about Jimmy’s wife behind her back!”

Jimmy’s wife looks outraged.

“If you’ve got somethin’ to say to her, say it to her face! But make sure you say it in a loving, Christ-like way, of course.”

Yeah, so I’m trying to work that in because it’s too hilarious to be true, but it’s so freaking true. And stories like these are precisely why writers spy. We soak up these events, these real-life people/caricatures, these conversations because they make delicious stories. They add what our imaginations can’t. And when you write realistic fiction, you need that. The world around you becomes your candy store of ideas, and you begin to discover that reality is pretty crazy.

I love reading reviews of realistic fiction that state, “Oh, that isn’t very realistic,” or “That could never happen.” Wanna make a bet? That story you just read is a collection of soaked up people and events sprinkled with the ideas of the author. It may not be one hundred percent true, but it’s pretty darn close.

So the next time you’re out and about, you might want to look over your shoulder. Go ahead and let your eyes dart around. Think twice before you do what you’re just about to do. Because we’re watching. The notebooks are open, people. We’re watching and we’re jotting.

Totally. Creepy.
