Today on Novels On The Run, I have my book review of Forbidden Territory and an excerpt.

Enjoy!

By: Melissa Pearl & Brenda Howson
Published By : Zealous Design
Released : available Now
Details: Digital For Review, 192 Pages

RATING: 4.5 ELI STARS!

Book Blurb : Goodreads

Mica and Lexy have been best friends and next door neighbours since they were eight years old. They share everything and have no secrets from each other until... Tom arrives on Mica's doorstep - a gorgeous exchange student from England. And Lexy is smitten.

Suddenly both girls are keeping secrets. Mica is hiding news about Tom's English girlfriend and Lexy hasn't got the heart to tell her best friend that her brother Eli, the guy Mica is mad on, thinks of her as only a friend.

After a massive fight, the girls decide the best way to mend their friendship is to spend some quality time together. And what better way than to go camping away from their parents and why not invite along the guys they are crushing on.

So the four teenagers embark on a geo-caching expedition into New Zealand's native bush expecting a long weekend filled with flirtatious fun; instead secrets are exposed as they stumble across a hidden marijuana crop and its gun-wielding watchmen. Forced apart they spend the next forty-eight hours racing blindly in opposite directions as they fight to find each other before the hunters do.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

‘Forbidden Territory’ is set in New Zealand. This is not a paranormal story, but a story about two guys and two girls who are going through the trials of falling in love. Add a criminal element to the story and this was a great read.

Eli aka Elijah, and Lexy aka Sexy Lexy ( boys!) aka Alexandra ( just don’t call her that) are brother and sister. Lexy and Mica aka Mike are bff’s. Tom aka Thomas aka Oxford ( he is the British one) is living with Mica’s family , he is the exchange student. Horse face....well, we don’t need to worry about her.

A party and protective Eli is a great opener. I really like Eli, he is rather my kind of lad ( this is fictional self talking here) . I like Mica and Eli together.....if there is a together, not saying there is.....

Lexy has fallen hard for Tom. Tom just needs to wake up and smell the roses. I think I would have liked Tom to have been a bit tougher. Lexy had her girl power going on, enough for the two of them.

Now I thought this was going to be a story about four people finding love, once they got through some obstacles, but, there is more. There is some Geo-Caching.

What is Geo - Caching you ask? Well, I didn’t know. It is modern day treasure hunting using a GPS. Yeah, I know, go figure!

This group of four decide to go off ‘tramping’, which is hiking and follow coordinates to the treasures . Once you find it, you place your name and date in the notebook and take something from the container, add something of yours , pop it back where you found it and then the next Geo-Caching treasure hunters can find it and rinse and repeat.

BUT!!!!

This lot stumble across something they should not have and let the danger and bullets fly, not to mention a river face plant.

Amongst all the danger and bullets, there is some love emerging...awwww. The girls show their strength and determination to stay one step ahead of the baddies. The guys realise maybe the girls are worth snogging.......

The story is told from both Mica and Lexy’s POV, which I liked. I like Mica and Lexy as bff’s. They don’t take any crap from each other, they are honest when it counts and look out for each other. Both girls are strong characters.

I really enjoyed Melissa and Brenda’s story of love, danger and friends who have each other’s back.

QUOTES:

“Twice today…” Eli cleared his throat. “When those guys shot at you and when I saw you drop… both times I thought, 'Not yet. I haven’t gotten to know her properly.'”

I swivelled my head on his shoulder and looked into his eyes. “You know me,” I countered with a smile.

“Not the way I want to.”

“He’s a little weedy.”

“No he’s not! He’s gorgeous!”

“I didn’t say he wasn’t gorgeous. I said he was a little weedy.”

“He’s not weedy!”

EXCERPT - FORBIDDEN TERRITORY

Image of the river scene
This excerpt is from Lexy’s POV. It was fun to write action scenes in this book. And there are a lot of them, because Mica and Lexy get into lots of trouble. I picked this scene for you, because, 1. Lexy is so clear headed and doesn’t hestitate to save the guy she’s crushing on and, 2. It will hopefully leave you wanting to read the book to find out what happens!!

Prickles ran down my spine at the sound of stones tumbling into the river. I whipped around to the bush where Tom had disappeared. Then I watched in unbelieving horror as Tom’s body tripped and fell from the bush down towards the swiftly running water.

“Arghhhhhhhhh.”

Tom’s shriek was like a spear to my soul. Fear took over as I raced towards the river just in time to see his head smash into a rock before the water carried him away from me.

I screamed and felt my heart stop then beat in double time with adrenalin. It pounded like venom through my veins.

Tom’s limp body bobbed back to the surface then was swept downstream. I followed him with my eyes. My breath coming out in short bursts. A log on the far side of the river caught his jersey, trapping him.

My thoughts came in bullet points.

Save him.

Get rope.

No one else.

He might die.

Think logically.

Leaping back to my pack, I ripped into it. I needed some rope or something. I found my stretchy clothes line and flung it around my neck with relief. I lowered myself gingerly down the riverbank like a spider on my hands and butt. I found a tree branch that didn’t budge when I shook it so I looped the line around it, tying it in a bowline knot. Thank goodness Dad had taught us to expect the worst. Stripping off my shoes, tee and cargos, I dipped my left foot into the river, yelping in shock. It was BLOODY freezing.

Tom was face down in the water; I didn’t have time to be a woose. Tying the elastic cord around my wrist, I leapt into the water wearing only my bra and underwear. The water hit me like a thousand needles plunging into my warm flesh. The river swallowed my scream as I sunk under the surface. My lungs begged for air. I wrestled my way to the top and quickly orientated myself. Making the most of my fresh energy, I fought against the flow and swam awkwardly across the divide.

Reaching Tom, I clung to the log with one arm and used the other to heave him over. His face was almost blue. His mouth was ajar. He looked dead.

Red Light Alert
Series To Watch Out For!!

BOOK REVIEW:

I really enjoyed Melissa’s first instalment in her 'Time Spirit Trilogy', I thought it was quite a 'cool' story. I think this series needs to be published and on book shop shelves.

What a wonderfully original tale of a time travelling family who are led or controlled, depending on how you want to look at it,  by their father Alistair and loving husband to Penelope. I do have trust issues with Alistair and Penelope and also by the time you finish this book I think you are starting to realise that all is not what it may appear.

There are secrets.

1 Minute in the present is approximately 1 Hour in the crossed over.

I loved Gemma, the black Ducati riding younger sister of the twins Ruby and Dominic Hart. Dominic is six ft three inches of gorgeous, and totally loyal to his sisters. His nickname for Gemma is ‘Slim’ and it suits her.

Gemma is unfortunately known as the ‘freak’ at St. Augustine High School, Florida. What she lacks in social skills, she makes up for in beauty and fighting skills.

Gemma has a secret that she must keep...... well, secret. Unfortunately, circumstances don’t always allow the opportunity for the cat not to get out of the bag, the chicken to fly the coop, the naked girl not to be caught in the nuddy....hehe!

Enter Harrison Granger, 17, blonde hair, drives a 1978 Corvette Stingray....have I got your attention yet? He comes from a loving family, mother Helen, stepfather Bryon, stepbrother Justin, stepsister Rosie and little brother Sam. Hmmmm, I have some thoughts there, but I shall see what ‘Black Blood’, tells me.

Jordan Monroe, I like to refer to him as Moron, has his eyes set on conquering the ‘freak’ and doesn’t take too kindly to Harrison. Now the ‘freak’ doesn’t want to be conquered by the Moron and lets him know. But he is a persistent little bugger.

Jordan and his inept minions are tracking Harrison down. Harrison ,keeping one step ahead of Moron and his Minions, smacks into the ‘freak’ , they shuffle through the door of ‘Camilla’s Closet’, nab some clothes off the rack, off into the change room for some hide and hopefully not seek , by the Moron and Minions.

 * queue the music *

Let the ‘freak’ label peel away, and Harrison sees Gemma in a different light, one that smells like apple blossom shampoo.

And there begins the connection of Harrison and Gemma.

I am having some trust issues with the missions Alistair is sending the family on and why. I don’t want to give away, what they are, and where they go, and what they get up to as I thought that was wonderful to find out without being spoiled.

Melissa scatters little bread crumbs of intrigue about that have you picking them up and tucking them away in your pocket .

The last few chapters really got me chewing my finger nails as they are really, really good and exciting and nail biting, worthy.

The ending, well, that had me all grabby, grabby for, ‘Black Blood’, the second book in this trilogy , oh the intrigue will have you reaching for more.

FAVE QUOTE:

“Your house.  I would like to go there sometime.”
“Why?”
He reached for her hand and ran his thumb over her knuckles. “So I can picture you in it.”

This excerpt is from Chapter Eight.

Gemma was injured across the line. Harrison has found her and taken her away from the public eye so she can get cleaned up. He doesn't believe her lie about slipping in the bathroom. He knows she's keeping secrets from him - like the unexplained birthmark that appears and fades on her collarbone, but he doesn't want to push her away with an interrogation.

Harrison's gaze traveled over the plains of Gemma's skin and he saw the mark on her collarbone appear. The phenomenon made his insides quake, but he knew he couldn’t ask her about it. He watched the star shape mark burn a passionate red, before fading again as her body relaxed.

In an attempt to dispel his disquiet, he reached for the icepack she was holding. He needed something else to focus on.

“Here let me have a look at that.”

Taking the pack from her before she could object, the uneasy fire stirring in his gut accelerated as if someone had doused his insides with gasoline.

“What?”

Whipping off the butterfly stitches, he ran his finger over the hairline scar that now lay where her gash had been. Her skin was no longer purple and the only evidence of her recent wound was a little dried blood in her hair.

“How did…? Where did it go?”

Gemma’s shoulders stiffened. She brushed his hand away and covered her scar. “I’m a fast healer.”

“Fast? Gemma, I’m a fast healer, okay? You’re just… All you’re giving me is fast? You have a scar now! The kind of scar that takes days, sometimes weeks, to appear! What happened to the bruising?”

She closed her eyes and turned her head away. “What do you want me to say, Harrison?”

“The truth would be nice.”

“I can’t tell you that!”

His heart thudded in his chest as he watched her struggle, but he couldn’t let this go.

“Gemma…” He licked his lips.

“Please don’t, Harrison. I’m not allowed to say anything.”

“Why? Are you an alien or something?”

“This isn’t Roswell.” She huffed and looked out the window. “Just accept that there’s things you’ll never know about me.”

“I’ve been trying, but I want to know everything about you… and I want you to know everything about me! I feel like we could have something awesome if you were just willing to bend a few rules.”

Her eyes were fiery when she turned back to face him. “I am breaking the rules for you! Do you have any idea what my parents would do if they found out I was sitting in your car right now? What more do you want from me?”

“I want you to trust me with the truth!”

“You don’t know what you’re asking! I can’t, okay?”

Harrison’s anger spurted to life as he started the engine and reversed.

“You know you’re not the only one putting yourself on the line here. Do you have any idea how much flak I’m getting just for talking to you?”

The fact he didn’t really care was hardly relevant. He accelerated onto the road.

“The least you could give me are a couple of reasons why you’re such a secretive freak.”

“I’m sorry I can’t give you what you want, but you either take me as I am or you don’t take me at all.”

“You know it would be a hell of a lot easier not to take you, but I can’t stop thinking about you or wanting to be with you! Ever since that day we touched… I… it’s like you’ve cursed me!”

Gemma flinched. His words were an invisible blow that left her looking bruised and aching. Harrison glanced at her, hating himself.

“I didn’t mean-”

“Stop the car.”

“No, I’ll take you back to school.”

“I don’t want you to.”

He knew he could probably spend the next ten minutes arguing with her. By then he’d be pulling into school anyway, but his foot pressed the brake and he pulled to the side of the road.

“Gemma, I’m sor-”

The door slammed shut behind her. She hitched her bag higher onto her shoulder and began a fast paced walk up the street that soon turned into a run. Closing his eyes, he banged his head against the steering wheel.

“Granger, you are such a JERK!”

I hope you enjoyed that excerpt.
