BOOK REVIEW - COUNTDOWN by MICHELLE ROWEN - YA DYSTOPIAN SUSPENSE - HARLEQUIN TEEN

By: Michelle Rowen
Published By: Harlequin Teen
Released : Available Now
Details: paperback from publisher for honest review,

RATING: 3.5 STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

3 seconds left to live. Once the countdown starts, it cannot be stopped.

2 pawns thrown into a brutal underground reality game.

Kira Jordan survived her family's murder and months on plague-devastated city streets with hard-won savvy and a low-level psi ability. She figures she can handle anything. Until she wakes up in a barren room, chained next to the notorious Rogan Ellis.

1 reason Kira will never, ever trust Rogan. Even though both their lives depend on it.

Their every move is controlled and televised for a vicious exclusive audience. And as Kira's psi skill unexpectedly grows and Rogan's secrets prove evermore deadly, Kira's only chance of survival is to risk trusting him as much as her instincts. Even if that means running head-on into the one trap she can't escape.

GAME OVER

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I love dystopian reads, the world authors can create for the reader can be outstanding, the book can make it to the big screen.

I have read previous works by Michelle and enjoyed them.

Countdown was a read that I had some difficulty with.

There were parts I loved. I totally dug the start of this book, even if it gave off a strong SAW, the movie , vibe.

Two people unconscious, chained in a room, one wounded , both have keys to the others lock. Who trusts who?

Let the game begin!

I felt this was a strong start to this book with great potential. I really liked Rogan. I felt for him. I thought his character could have been amazing, but it took a bit of a backseat to the shit his life had turned into. I felt I was missing a character connection with both Kira and Rogan to me.

Now, this is just my personal one opinion and I have checked other reviews out prior to writing mine. Not something I do often.

I desperately wanted to love this book, because it is a genre I LOVE.

I love fast paced reads.

I found from just looking on Goodreads only, that readers either felt like me, or loved this book. It is awesome that other readers got so much more from this read than I did.

So I gather it’s just a case of some will , some won’t.

Hey, we can’t all like the same book. My thoughts are nothing against Michelle, they are just maybe my frustration at the story line.

My personal thoughts.

I felt the game felt too easily resolved in each level. The story had too much convenience in solutions to the drama Kira and Rogan were in.

“How did you know to ring the bell?”

I finally looked at him. “Lucky guess.”

“Yes,” a voice said. “Very lucky indeed.”

I didn’t believe from the start that Rogan was the guy portrayed to the reader. It felt a bit forced.

I think the number of pages turned, gave me indication in areas of how these two would survive. What I mean is, when you aren’t very far into the book and you are already a few levels out of six completed, I could tell they would make it.

Sometimes a book can be too fast paced for it’s own storyline good.

There were some twists to extend the story outside of the game, which I very much enjoyed.

I can’t help thinking that epic fail number 1 for any type of game/hunting situation, is not having a tracking doodah inserted into the players. Maybe the Producer was too confident in his levels and players abilities. I know they had implants, but that is different.

To me this led to convenience for the storyline.

I had questions about the storyline. Why was Kira’s family murdered and not her? I understand that her family got in the way. I know that a certain person was hired to do it, but if she was the target originally, by some mystery villain?? , why not come back for her at a later date. I just have questions about that part. She was obviously important enough that a person was hired to knock her off, two years earlier. This person just gave up after his first attempt didn’t pan out for him. It was a paid job. I understand she flew the coop, but...

WT!

Kira’s association with the Producer came from a more random entry. It felt too easy considering what we find later on.

I understand the weaving of characters being connected, but...?

Why would you shut your eyes in front of the person who has to kill you to advance in the game. I know they asked for you to use your PSI on them, but ultimately for them to survive the level, they had to kill you. I found that a bit odd. Then you take the time to search their mind. I know they asked you to, again, WT! I know it was so the reader got this information, but...WT!!

Characters gave up information, kind of easily. I felt myself rolling my eyes a fair bit while reading. Things appeared too easy so the story could move forward even though it was a difficult situation, if that makes sense.

Jonathan knew who instigated the virus, but never did anything about it??

WT!!

But wanted to, when it was nearly too late?? Considering , again, what we find out in the story.

Sometimes the dialogue annoyed me a little.

“Well that’s rude,” Gareth said, shaking his head. “Honestly, kids. You don’t even want to apologize to me for ruining my plans yet again?”

“There’s one more level beneath this one,” XXXX said. “I was supposed to start working down there soon.” He sighed. “I guess that’s not going to happen anymore.”

Now, if you knew the circumstances, you would understand why it annoyed me, but there were other things about the dialogue too. I think that is up to interpretation, but I found myself rolling my eyes.

“I’m recovering.” I hobbled along quickly on my injured ankle. “Call me crazy, but I don’t think sucking in poisonous gas until you’re almost dead is something you can just shake off.”

You and me sister, yet you did just shake it off. You got that shiz inside you, it is deadly.

I’m trying not to sound rude. I am frustrated. I am annoyed with myself for not loving this book. In saying that , I did enjoy parts of the book.

Some readers totally loved this book, so my opinion is very different to theirs.

Which is magnificent.

Give it a try if you like a dystopian, game read.

You may be a total lover of Countdown and think I am bat-shit crazy and throw a pillow at me.

And, I am ok with that :)

A kiss that did something to me...something strange. Now I feel hungry all the time, but not for food. It's like part of me is missing-and I don't know if I can get it back.

Then there's Bishop. At first I thought he was just a street kid, but the secrets he's keeping are as intense as his unearthly blue eyes. If he's what I think he is, he may be the only one who can help me. But something terrifying is closing in, and the one chance Bishop and I have to stop it means losing everything I ever wanted and embracing the darkness inside me...

After watching this little vid and reading the sample extracts I am rather excited to read this book. I had it as a digital but it went pofff! Time ran out. I love the sound of this book and the extract I read sounded really intriguing. You may want to add this one to your TBR list:) I have read some of Michelle's adult books and enjoyed them so I am looking forward to her YA genre.

Happy Reading Everyone!!

BOOK REVIEW - BLOODLUST by MICHELLE ROWEN - NIGHTSHADE # 2

By : Michelle Rowen
Published By : Berkley, Penguin
Released : Available Now
Details : Paperback from library, 283 Pages

RATING : 4 VAMPIRE STARS!

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

Jillian Conrad's blood has killed the vampire king. Now an enemy to all vampires, she is targeted for elimination. So is the infant daughter of the dead king. If Jillian doesn't stand in the way of her death, then everyone, living or dead, is in great peril.

BOOK REVIEW:

I enjoyed this installment more than the first book, ‘Nightshade’ in this series. I am rather baffled after reading some reviews that some readers thought to read book 2 before book 1. That kind of doesn’t make sense to me as it’s a series to be read in order. I think you would miss some of the reasoning’s behind certain things Michelle Rowen has written into book 2.

Having said that, I still think Michelle can dig a bit deeper with her writing. I am really getting into this series now and am looking forward to the next instalment.

Michelle is quite dark with her writing and she threw some changes at the reader in ‘Bloodlust’.

Just about everybody has something go whicky whacky with them and end result is something they have to deal with for better or for worse.

Jillian is bleeding black tears, not a good sign, Declan’s sanity is questionable, Noah gets a makeover, Declan gets a makeover, the twins face off, there is blood and gore and lust and love. A good baby sitter is hard to find, brotherly love...not much, a loyal soldier is breakable and Matthias gets kudos for being very organised.

Jillian spends a lot of time in pain, as she is slowly dying from being injected. The pain is shutting her body down, it is gradually getting too much for her body to come back from. I do like how brave Jillian is considering, she has been thrown into a life that has forced her to be separated from the only family she has left. She handles it all very well. Then she has these two guys, who are related, like we are talking uncle Matthias and nephew Declan , one is lusting or is it love and the other is wanting to love her but can he allow himself. Either way the relies have their eye on Jillian....and then to make it more interesting.......

I do enjoy Matthias, he is a bit of a laugh and he is ever so naughty. I can’t help liking Matthias that much more at the moment. I love Declan, he is uber smexi , but I can’t put my finger on it at the moment. I think I need more convincing from Michelle.

BOOK REVIEW - NIGHTSHADE by MICHELLE ROWEN - NIGHTSHADE # 1

By : Michelle Rowen
Published By : BERKLEY, PENGUIN
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback from library , 352 Pages

RATING : 4 DECLAN AND MATTHIAS STARS!!

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

Jillian Conrad never believed in vampires-until she was unwillingly injected with a serum that was supposed to act as a deadly poison to them. Now, tormented half-vampire Declan Reese wants her blood to destroy the undead kingdom. Unfortunately, the serum has also made her blood irresistible to all vampires-including Declan, whose desire for Jillian is more than mere hunger.

BOOK REVIEW:

I love me some urban fantasy and I know what to look for in a great urban fantasy book. I was having a little trouble with Nightshade as it fluctuated with me between really good and ok back up to really good. Having said that I have read book # 2, Bloodlust and I really enjoyed it.

My first thought with Nightshade was one of its male characters Declan, reminded me of the movie Blade’s character, Blade, half human, half vampire, a Dhamphyr, who injects himself to curb his bloodlust and is a vampire assassin. Unfortunately it also curbs the sexual urges that a guy of his age, 28yrs old should be feeling. The poor lovey has never had any relations...* waggles eyebrows*. Never felt the urge to get his smexi on. This is thanks to the only father he has ever known, Carson Reyes who gets Declan to inject himself with serum every 3 hours on the dot. Declan is a scarred, one eyed, pirate patch wearing soldier who shows no emotion and is a killing machine.

Enter Jillian Conrad, 5ft 4”, just your average Girl Friday in the office, until she decides to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A nice stabbing of a deadly poison in her neck from Mr Anderson and her life turns topsy turvy.

Jillian and Declan are stuck with each other for half the book, each needing the other to stay alive until they get to Silver Ridge where a whole set of characters come into play.

I really like Noah Palmer, he talks too much, but he has a kind heart, but he talks too much...in other words he is a good source of info for Jillian.

Dr Monica Gray and Carson are working to rid the world of vampires. They also have a bit of a mad scientist thing going on doing crazy experimenting.

Not everybody agrees with what they are doing.

Jillian winds up in Matthias’ arms, King of the Vampires and enter the quite good twists.

It did take a while in this first instalment to get past the meet and greet and get the plot to take hold and be more than it was, but I did really enjoy the latter part of the book.

Michelle has given us a whole pile of betrayal, lust, bloodlust, lots of who is trust worthy and who did you think was trustworthy...well they weren’t..ha! Serums, then new improved serums, pain and a one eyed cat named Molly...guess whose she belongs to?

I really LOVE Matthias’ character, he is uber smexi and he can’t help this thing he has for Jillian.

Declan’s character grew on me as he was deliberately a flat , non emotional character, but when he showed more of himself, he came alive to the reader and you could look past what he originally showed us.

From Girl Friday to the tough fight to survive girl that Jillian became by the end of this book was worth the read.

There was a scene in this book that did make me cringe a little as I think you have to be careful when writing this type of scene as I thought it was too blasé, considering what happened to Jillian with everybody watching in the observation room...it kind of didn’t sit well with me. The characters were just too blasé about what happened. Then we just forget as we read on. I feel like Declan’s character needed to follow up on it once his mind was back in the game, be furious or something. I have read this type of scene in other books and I thought it was handled better. It wasn’t full on but I think it did tip over what is classified as too much non-consensual touchy.

I think what I am trying to say is, Jillian’s character was just an office worker, not trained in being a tough kick ass chick who can roll with the punches, knows what she signed on for. Jillian didn’t sign on for anything, she fell into it all and had to cope. She has so much thrown at her in this book and she handles it all very well. I would have liked to see her lose it a bit, then grow from what happened to her. Show that it did effect her and the characters important to her.

I enjoyed this first instalment enough to want to keep reading and Bloodlust had some great twists and more Matthias and Declan, add in Kristoff and you have one bang on party where anything goes.

I am looking forward to more books in this series just to see where Michelle takes the whole Declan, Matthias * waggles eyebrows* storyline with Jillian getting better and better.

BY GUEST REVIEWER CAROLYN

BOOK REVIEW:

This is a book of short stories of paranormal romance by some well known authors. Each story is only about 20-49 pages long so is a great book for filling in time between books you have read and may be waiting for. This is why I started reading it. I was waiting for Fire to arrive after reading Graceling and didn’t want to start another book in case Fire arrived. I didn’t read this book in order but chose the stories by the authors I knew first then read the others randomly. I do like these books as you get a taste of what different authors writing styles are like. As a result of reading this and 'The Eternal Kiss' previously, I am now interested in reading some of the authors other work.

DUNGEONS OF LANGEAIS by Becca Fitzpatrick (24 pages)

This is the story of Chauncey who appears in Becca’s book 'Hush, Hush'. Anyone who has read that book will know who Chauncey is. The “Dark Angel” is mentioned throughout and this is about Chauncey’s hatred of said angel. He is never mentioned by name but we all know who it is. It did not change my opinion of Chauncey. I still don’t like him but now understand his motives towards Nora in 'Hush, Hush' and the “Dark Angel”, well somethings never change.

HARE MOON by Carrie Ryan (30 pages)

This story is about Sister Tabitha from Carrie Ryan’s book , 'The Forest of Hands and Teeth' (TFOHT) so I guess it is a backstory. At the beginning I felt sorry for the young Tabitha. She wants to know what is outside the fences and her parents don’t treat her very nicely. However by the end of it, I just went back to my original thoughts of her from TFOHT. She is just plain mean and nasty. I just can’t understand why she did what she did but can now understand her attitude towards Mary in TFOHT. She can see herself as a young girl in Mary and is jealous of her.

THE HOUNDS OF ULSTER by Maggie Stiefvater (20 pages)

I didn’t see the POW coming in this one. It was a bit of a weird short story, kept going back and forth and all over the place for the first few pages, then settled down into a really good story. It was interesting and I really wanted to know who “THEY” were. The main character wouldn’t name them but, wow,  I was surprised when I found out. I have read Maggie’s books 'Shiver' and 'Linger',  but haven’t yet read 'Lament' or 'Ballad' and she certainly likes to centre her characters around music.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS by Daniel Waters (26 pages)

This story was just plain weird. It starts off with 5 teenagers from a small town in a car crash. 3 of the boys and 1 girl die and the other girl survives but is in a coma. The parents all go to a counselling session where the counsellor tells them what to expect when if or when their children “return”. Apparently in this and surrounding towns when people die they quite often return within 7 days. The families are not allowed to bury the bodies of their loved ones before the 7 days is up. This is told from the point of view of Cal the local police officer. His daughter Mandy died in the crash, and it follows him for the 7 days after the crash. As I said before, just plain weird.

THE ASSASSIN’S APPRENTICE by Michelle Zink (22 pages)

When reading this I was thinking not another story about descendants of angels which is what this is about. Rose’s family are descendants of angels and have been killed by a demon named Bael and now she is planning on killing him herself. Enter Asher, an apprentice assassin sent to protect Rose and kill Bael. There is a bit of smexual tension between the two as they try to work together.

ERRANT by Diana Peterfreund (33 pages)

Errant ,  is set several centuries ago in France and is about a nun that is also a unicorn hunter. She and her unicorn named Enyo. They are sent to train a young lady named Elise for a hunting ritual that is to be held as part of the Elise’s wedding festivities. Her family has the Unicorn hunting blood in their veins meaning that they can call unicorns with their minds. It was quite a good story, a little bit hard to follow early but ended quite well.

THE SPIRIT JAR by Karen Mahoney (45 pages)

This is the second story about Marie O’Neil or 'Moth' as she is referred to. The first story about 'Moth',  the eternal 18 year old vampire , I first read about in ,  'The Eternal Kiss'.  In this story, Theo her creator has sent her to London to retrieve an ancient magical book from an obscure occult bookshop. She meets Adam, then they have an adventure involving a spirit.

LOST by Justine Musk (22 pages)

Sasha is a girl who has the ability to find things that are lost. Her best friend Josh is in a coma after a terrible car accident three weeks before and now she is feeling lost herself. She has the urge to go to the big white abandoned house up on the hill and there she finds Haiden.

This was really interesting and completely different to what I thought it would be about and the ending was totally surprising. I am sure anyone reading it will make a comparison to something that I cannot name without giving away the plot.

THE SPY WHO NEVER GREW UP by Sarah Rees Brennan (27 pages)

A boy is hired as a Super Spy for Her Majesty the Queen of England’s secret service. Judging from the title, it is the story of ........  All he asks for in payment is a mother. There is actually quite a bit of humour in this story.  There are a few adult type comments in there for us “older” readers, and I really liked it. I do wonder if there is a little boy who doesn't want to grow up in a lot of the secret service agents . They do like to play with the “big boy” toys.

BEHIND THE RED DOOR by Caitlin Kittredge (39 pages)

Jo, is a teenage girl who decides to enter an abandoned property called Ash House. When she enters she sees the ghost of a young man and then starts having nightmares about the house.  This story has everything, smoking, drug taking, drinking, lesbian relationship. Not your typical YA short story but interesting nonetheless.

FAMILIAR by Michelle Rowen (32 pages)

Brenda is a teenage witch-in-training that has to pick a familiar. A familiar is a witch’s pet, such as a cat, bat, snake, ferret or rat. Brenda picks a scrawny half-dead looking runt of a kitten with a rhinestone collar on.  I liked this story it was different to the other stories it was a good short story. Would be interested to read some of Michelle Rowen’s other books.

FEARLESS by Rachel Vincent (48 pages)

Sabine, a fifteen year old girl who is in trouble with the law,  has no family, has been living in foster care but got into trouble with a baseball bat and somebody’s car. She is sent to Holser House after breaking her probation curfew by staying out all night. It is a halfway house for wayward teenage girls. If she messes up again she will be going to Juvenile Detention. It was very interesting read and different from the others about witches, vampires, werewolves etc. Kind of ended a bit abruptly though.

VERMILLION by Daniel Marks (49 pages)

This is about a place called Vermillion which is in Purgatory. Velvet and her boyfriend Nick are asked to accompany Aime to hunt down a ghost that is haunting the living.  It was quite interesting to look at things from the ghosts point of view, however I did feel that it was a little bit too long. Probably could have cut around 10 pages out of it and it still would have been good. I did like it although the ending was pretty obvious.
