BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

This is my new future. Fate threw me to the bastards of Hades.

I love reading a book that challenges me in parts. Tears Of Tess is one of those reads.

Q is a complicated character. He is at war with himself, tormented by his needs.

"That's what you are. Painful." He thumped his chest. "Painful to me."

He is a confusing character at times as we are trying to understand is he playing the role of good guy or bad guy or a little of both.

"You are mine. Through circumstances I will not discuss with you, you have come into my possession, and therefore must obey me in all things."

There are some scenes that had me peeking out from behind my pillow. Going all vampire is a bit scary for me. That was a bit of a challenge to read. But hey, two consenting people were involved.

Whatever floats your boat.

When I got to be in Q’s head for a brief time in the book, I think it helped cement his character further in my mind. I want more from Q’s pov because he is a complicated character, he is tormented by what gets him off and I want to understand him more. He is an exciting character to read, but he is also a little frightening.

My heart split into fragments. Q's voice filled my head. "Smell so good. So fucking good. Like rain... no, no like frost. Sharp and fresh and icy and cold and ... and painful." He closed his eyes, voice trailing into a whisper. "You love c-causing pain."

At the moment Q isn’t a character I totally understand. He is an out-side-the-box type character that I enjoy reading from time to time. I like seeing what an author can do with a man that has a past, and his present is a war zone on his mind and body.

When is enough going to be enough to satisfy that dark side? Q says it himself.

He whispered, "I'm not afraid of hurting you. I'm afraid of how far I'm willing to go."

Tess is a fighter, a survivor and she won't go down without letting those around her know it.

"I'm the only one who owns my fate. Not you. Not your guards. Not your sick operation. No one."

The tracker in Tess’s neck. I did have questions about it. When you have a vendetta on your mind , it is a good idea to cut that sucker out. ASAP.

In the movies, it is the first thing to get removed when freedom presents itself. It is not something you carry about as a souvenir. It isn’t called a tracker for no reason.

I also questioned Tess’s reappearance. I understand her parents for whatever reason didn’t care she was even missing. Her reappearance isn’t met with an interrogation by FBI or CIA or any other governing letters of the alphabet. This is a girl who has come out the other end alive. Her information would be valuable. Brax went to somebody to get her found. She was a missing person. Her physical appearance wasn’t altered to hide her.

These are my only plot questions. I understand where Tess will be taking things herself, but...

Tess is a character that can be taken a couple ways. Readers can be somewhat confused by her behavior or we can understand her behavior. I chose to understand her. I put myself in her place and I felt like it was realistic. She has that Stockholm Syndrome thing going on, but also ... Tess lets us know her desires before she is stolen, so she is drawn.

I gotta admit, I am not sure about ol’ Brax. I think any dude confronted with a woman dressed provocatively and brandishing a toy, that is quite a normal acceptable toy, would behave a bit differently. I would probably have believed his character more if he was studying the bible. He is only twenty three years old, still in his smexual manly prime.

I kissed harder, pressing against him with an urgency growing out of control. I was too hot. I needed him too much, for far too long. I should've spoken sooner - told him how badly I needed to be possessed. For months, I felt cast adrift, like he was no longer my anchor. I needed him to remind me I belonged to him, just like he belonged to me.

I loved the chapter titles which are bird species. I was wondering about them as I read them. I love how the birds are used in the story. It was different and clever. Thought provoking as you are reading the titles.

There are graphic traumatic scenes that make this story more realistic with trafficking of humans. It is happening every day and we forget that young loved ones are stolen from families and the cruelty of it. You come into the world free and then through no fault of your own a price is on your body and your rights have been stripped from you. You have lost all of yourself to these creatures who feel it is their right to degrade and terrorize you , until you are no more.

I understand Pepper had to bring the terror and graphic scenes to sell her story. I think she did it very well.

He didn't make my soul sing. He made it weep, and scream, and tear itself into pieces.

I totally give this book five stars because it is a story with characters that really do leap off the page. Q is a very confronting character. An Alpha character who has so much deep inner emotional shiz going on. I really do want that explored. The taste I got from this book, I want to know more. He is a character you don’t forget easily. I love how Pepper has written him.

When the glass is only half full, it is understandable how Tess behaves. She only has her own information and what she does with it inside her head. She was stolen, abused, raped, she is only twenty years old, hardly a worldly personality. She has her own inner sexual urges that hadn't been acted upon. She is a lost girl in a world that has a very ugly face. A face where those in charge think it is their right to claim a human and receive money. No conscience for the harm or death of the individual.

Tess meets a man that stirs things inside her but who is he to her? What role is he playing. Her body has been abused . She has a strong will to fight but what is she fighting against? There is an enormous amount of emotional upheaval that is swamping her. She has come from a family that has shown her no real interest or support. How should she react to everything that gets thrown at her? Who should she trust?

The man never broke eye contact, ensnaring me in his gaze. Slowly, he pushed off the banister and moved toward the stairs.
I gulped.
He was smooth water - effortless in refinement but just like still water, dangerous if you couldn't swim. Deadly rips and currents lurked deep below the surface. I eyed him, trying to figure out what sick pleasures he indulged in that normal, willing women were hard to come by.

Suzette holds back information she could have given Tess to soothe her ordeal of winding up in Q's mansion after being terrorized and assaulted by the evil that took her. She calls her friend , but Tess is in the dark about her new Maitre.

Tess and Q together are quite explosive with how far they will go with each other. I think it is hard to find a partner that is willing to tread that line with you and to submit so completely.

Without fear.

With so much trust.

"Monsters find each other in the dark."

I don’t understand the depths of Q’s carnal pleasure, but that is why I find him intriguing to read. He isn’t the norm. He is a contradiction to his cause.

"You are mine. I can do what I want with you. I can dress you. Fuck you. Send you away. Loan you to others. You belong to me. And you've finally realized it isn't romantic, it isn't sexy, or fun. It's something no one should want or desire. You're a captive."

"You're mine, esclave. And it isn't a fucking happy ever after."

Pepper writes a convincing tale of two people's world's colliding, brought together via a terrifying ordeal and the need to find who they really are and who they want to be.

"Recognise me. See me. I am your master."

... I glared . "See me. I am not yours to torment."

Is this a chance meeting of two kindred souls from across the globe?

Tonight he changed my life. Q may make my soul weep and tear itself into pieces but he made it operatic with joy, too. My soul didn't just sing, it rejoiced.
I finally found a place where my twistedness belonged.

A meeting that should never have happened.

But it did.

"Everyone knows, after captivity, a pet doesn't survive in the wild."

Q & A SESH with PEPPER

Michelle:  What five words describe Pepper Winter’s the AUTHOR?

Pepper: Hardworking , Passionate, Loyal, Travel obsessed,
Book and laptop addicted (more than five words but I’m bending the rules) J

Michelle:  What five words describe the person behind the author?

Pepper:

A little insecure about her writing

Completely blown away by the fans who love her work

In love with her hubby

Constantly cold (must move to a hot climate)

Has insomnia

(again more than 5 but you get 5 bullet points) lol

Michelle:
If you were given the task of walking up to somebody random in the street and you were to explain your book to them in a short speech what would you tell them? Not your book blurb, but something more...deeper.

Pepper:  Crap, that’s a hard question. Um, It’s about two characters who, together they suffer, but together they find redemption. A book about finding your perfect other, even if fate decides to screw you over along the way.

Michelle:  Tears of Tess I just purchased on Amazon. I was doing some interview research and it sounds WOW! What quote from the book is the most powerful you think you wrote?

Pepper: I’m not sure the strongest quote I wrote, but personal favourite is:

“My name is Tess Snow. Not Sweetie, or Tessie, or Honey. I’m a woman only now realizing what she’s capable of. I’m no one’s daughter. I’m no one’s girlfriend. I’m no one’s possession. I belong to me, and for the first time, I know how powerful that is.”

And my fans favourite is:

“Monsters find each other in the Dark”

Michelle:  What ten words describe Q Mercer?

Pepper:
Broody , Tense, Lonely, Righteous, Heinous, Barbaric,
Pure, Loyal, Generous, Demanding, Ruthless (was that ten?) lol

Michelle:  Who's counting he is a complicated man, so he needs words.

Michelle:  What ten words would Q use to describe Tess?

Pepper:
Courageous, Strong, Beautiful, Intelligent, Perfect, 58,
His, Esclave, Argumentative

Michelle:  What song do you think describes Q and Tess’s relationship and why?

Pepper:  Oh, I don’t know about their relationship. I would love some help on this if everyone can suggest a tune?

Michelle:  What has been the one thing that stands out to you in your journey as a writer?

Pepper: How much social marketing is as important / if not more than writing. I spend equal measures just hanging out on FB as I do writing.

Michelle:  Quintessentially Q releases 15th December. I have put myself down for the tour. Woot! Could you please give a non spoiler teaser quote ?

Pepper:  Sure. I’ve been editing all day so I have a good one for you. Here you go.

**** R18 +****

“Enough,” Q roared. His chest strained as he pushed me hard against the cross. My back crashed against the eerily warm wood. I flinched when Q pressed his long frame against mine, sandwiching me completely. “Now is not the time to talk about hearts and falling, esclave. Now is the time for pain and fucking. See how the two don’t mix?”

He pushed off, swiping his face with an angry palm. “I’m tired. Too tired to keep fighting. I want you. I’ve wanted to make you scream for four fucking long days. I tried to behave. I tried to stop the darkness, but you just wouldn’t let it go. And now it’s my turn. You’re going to give me what I want. Take this obsessive sick need from me and help grant me a reprieve.”

Michelle:  Could you please give me images of who you think best represents Tess, Q and Brax.

Pepper: This I can’t do as in my mind they are who they are. Have a look at my account on pinterest.

http://www.pinterest.com/pepperwinters/boards/ to see some images based on Q and Tess along with a bunch of teasers :)

Michelle: Just a warning for younger chickens not to be looking at this pinterest site. Only for mature eyes.

I love this image as it really set Q's tattoo in my mind. I love it.

Michelle:  Thank you Pepper for taking the time to answer my Q’s and all the best with your writing. Looks like you are nailing it.

Pepper: Thanks so much, Michelle. It was awesome to share a bit about me and to be on your blog! <3 font="" nbsp="">

Excerpt

I jerked upright, ignoring the pain of his elbow. I feinted to the side, kicking his kneecap. His leg gave out, but he caught himself on the edge of the table. “Don’t fight. You’ll only make it worse.”

How many times had I heard that? And every time it turned out to be the truth. But I couldn’t not fight. I’d never be able to live with myself.

I breathed so hard my lungs ached. I looked frantically for the stairs. Where the hell were the fucking stairs?

I made to run, just as Q recovered. He lurched and wrapped arms around my heaving chest, dragging us to the floor. We landed in a pile of limbs, my rib screaming. Q’s fly was undone, trousers hanging precariously on his hips. My knickers were bunched to the side and oversensitive flesh swollen, needing a release. No! I’m not turned on. I’m not broken. Not yet.

Manic possession scorched his eyes, and I slapped him. Q reared back, lips twisted. Violence bristled as he slammed me down, securing himself above.

I froze, locking my knees together so he couldn’t settle between my legs. He clutched my chin, forcing me to look deep into his gaze. “What are you?”

I squirmed, hating the hunger in his voice, echoing the budding need in mine. I was sick to think I ever wanted this with Brax. But I never wanted this with Brax. I wanted light role-play, tame bondage, nothing like this. Please, not like this.

Q shocked me silent as he kissed my throat. He lingered, breathing deep. My stomach flipped. Pulling back, shock resonated in his face, as if he hadn’t meant to resort to being gentle.

A conflict of emotions skittered in his eyes, dampening undisguised lust, twisting it into something else. He sounded regretful, “Say it, and I’ll let you go. I won’t hurt you. I won’t rape you. Not tonight.”

I bit my lip. If I said it, I threw myself at his mercy, but if I didn’t say it, I’d be raped and I couldn’t handle that. Not after the trauma of everything. Not after my entire world dumped me and left me bereft. Especially not with my body being enemy number one.

“Esclave, say it.” His mouth tickled my ear again, words vibrating through flesh.

My fight drained, the will to disobey unspooled into meekness. “Yours,” I breathed, sick to my stomach, wanting to scrub my mouth out.

He kissed me, so, so softly, smelling like mint and lust—if lust had a smell. “Again.”

I shook my head, trying to get free. Q’s arms banded tighter, dragging me against his rock hard erection. “Don’t test me. My strength to let you go is almost at breaking point. Push again, and I won’t be able to stop.”

“Why hesitate? That’s what you mean to do, isn’t it? Ruin me. Keep me captive. A sex slave. Treat me like some animal to use and abuse?” I whispered, but my tone crackled with anger, fierce and bright.

“I don’t want to hurt you. I don’t want to take from you,” he murmured. My heart stopped. His tone hinted his thoughts—remorse.

“What do you want, then?” I raised an eyebrow in confusion.

Q paused, a flutter of fingers caressed my arm, imprisoning me, then stopped as if he did so unconsciously. “You know what I want, esclave.”

My heart hurt. I couldn’t keep up. One moment he touched as if I were an irreplaceable piece of art, the next he held me as if I was a bitch needing a lesson. He shook me, growling in my ear. “I need you to say it again, then you can go.”

Two options. Two decisions. Neither was easy. Both had consequences. But, for now, I chose the one protecting my virtue for another night.

I hung my head and murmured, “Yours.”

Excerpt

This was it. My new beginning. My new ending. I didn’t know what beheld my fate, but I sucked in a breath and stepped over the threshold. “Bon soir, esclave.” My eyes soared up to the first landing of a giant blue velvet staircase. Massive works of art hung like armament on gold gilded walls. A man in a grey chequered suit, with black shirt, silver tie, and slicked back hair watched me from the landing. His gaze unclothed me, terrified me. I stepped back, bumping against guard who didn’t let me go any further. He bent his head and whispered in my ear, his breath tickling my neck. “Say hello to your new master.”
