BOOK REVIEW - DEAD WATER by TIM O'ROURKE - KIERA HUDSON 2ND SERIES # 6 - 4.5 TIGER IS UPSET STARS!

By: Tim O'Rourke
Published By: Tim O'Rourke
Released : Available Now
Details: Kindle, 186 Pages

RATING: 4.5 TIGER IS UPSET STARS!

Blurb : Goodreads

With Sam and Kayla missing, Kiera, Potter and Murphy head for the Dead Waters. Here they hope to find their missing friends and the answers to why their flesh keeps cracking like that of a statue.

Knowing Potter has lied to her, Kiera is struggling with her feelings for him. Therefore, Kiera tries to keep Potter at a distance, scared that she might get hurt again.

With Skin-walkers and statues close behind them as they make their journey to the Dead Waters, Kiera can’t help but fear she is being led straight into a dead end.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I have been following Tim O’Rourke and his stories from his very first Kiera Hudson book, Vampire Shift. I love his sense of humour, his ability to bring together a fighting scene with a visual that plays out like a mini movie in my head. He can throw Hannibal Lecter style gorey scenes into his writing, without blinking, I on the other hand would prefer not to be eating whilst reading. He brings his cast of characters that we have grown to love together and puts them through all sorts of his mad cap action scenes and story line.

I always know I am in for a ride with his Kiera Hudson series.

Tim injects such enthusiasm into his writing, always plotting ahead, trying to outsmart the reader with his twists and curveballs that he throws at the reader. Some curveballs we catch and some we miss totally like a blind man. His twists can hurt our feelings and sometimes bring us to tears.

Kiera and Potter have some sorting out to do in Dead Water. Poor Potter seems to get himself in a bit of strife with other female characters. Is it his fault? Well, I like to stick up for him, but sometimes he does make it hard. I did have a hard time understanding you with Sophie, Potter.

I had fucked up a lot in my life, but this was the mother of all fuck-ups. If you could win the gold at the Olympics for the biggest screw-up, I’d be up there on the podium, clutching the gold, silver, and bronze medals.

I really like the new characters that have been brought into the storyline. One in particular, I think is a great new addition, she has a lot of spunk. I look forward to seeing where Tim takes these characters.

Dead Water is a book that is full of banter between my fave characters, Potter and Murphy.

They are my Starsky and Hutch.

They work so well together, often yelling at each other. They have a love like a father and son that is deeper than all the potty mouthed banter that they throw at each other. The readers of this series all have a lot of heart for Potter and Murphy. They bring something special through their dialogue, the way they play off each other.

I found myself laughing out loud while reading this instalment for most of the book..........

“Well, it’s a bit late in the day for all this overprotective bullshit, don’t you think?” I came back, cigarette dangling from the corner of my mouth. “We’re only in this mess because of you.”

“Are you taking drugs?” Murphy said, coming from around the side of the van in the snow. “You’re in the crapper because you can’t keep your dick in your pants. It’s not me who has been waving it around like it’s going out of fashion! To be honest, I’ve never understood how you’ve ever managed to get so much action.”

“I’m not talking about my sex life,” I growled. Then quickly added, “Besides, why shouldn’t I have had lots of woman action? What’s wrong with me?”

“What’s wrong with you?” Murphy coughed, lighting his pipe. “Just take a good, hard look at yourself. You’re untidy-looking. Your attitude stinks. You’re violent. Your hatred for wolves borders on the psychotic, you’re foul-mouthed, you chain smoke...”

“I’m not untidy-looking,” I cut in, unable to believe he could think such a thing of me. “You take that back. That’s a freaking lie if I ever heard one.”

“Don’t even get me started on the whole lying thing,” Murphy snapped, taking the pipe from the corner of his mouth and pointing it at me.

“I don’t lie,” I shot at him.

“Yeah, you do,” he grunted.

“When?” I demanded.

“Every time your lips move,” he said.

“Yeah, very funny, you miserable old fart,” I said. “You lied to Kiera, too. You’ve known for years the truth about her, but...”

“I was trying to protect her,” Murphy interrupted.

“And so was I!” I snapped at him.

“You have a funny way of showing it!” Murphy barked.

“We’re cops,” Potter said.

Now I don’t know if Potter was being a wise arse, but all the same, it seemed like a stupid thing to say.

“I can see that,” the cop growled, his voice sounding deep and throaty. I saw the two silver pips on each of his shoulders. He was an Inspector, and he outranked Murphy.

“You’ll have to forgive Constable Gabriella,” Murphy cut in. “He is still young in service. He obviously didn’t understand your question.”

“How many ways have I got to tell you, Sarge – its Gabriel! Gabriella is a freaking girl’s name!” Potter glared at Murphy.

The Inspector looked at both Murphy and Potter in disbelief as they stood and argued. “Listen here, you couple of morons, I couldn’t give a crap what your name is. You need to get your act together and smarten up. Just look at yourselves. You’re a complete mess.”

“See, Gabriella, I told you you’re untidy and need to smarten yourself up,” Murphy grunted. “But oh no, you wouldn’t listen to me. And now the Inspector has seen you looking like a sack of shit, and we’re both in trouble.”

“I don’t look like a sack of shit!” Potter snapped back at Murphy, taking a cigarette from his coat pocket and lighting it. “I wear my uniform with pride. Anyway, you’ve got no room to talk – you’re wearing carpet slippers, for fuck’s sake!”

“You’ll have to forgive my nephew,” Murphy said, looking back at the man. “He is a little bit simple – you know, has learning difficulties.”

“Retarded, you mean?” the man asked, eyeing me, now with some pity in his eyes.

“I’m not a freaking re...” I started.

“And I’m his social worker,” Kiera cut over me, taking me gently by the arm. Then, looking at me, she smiled sweetly and added, “Come on back to the car, Gabriel. You’ll be safe and warm there. Let Uncle Murphy pay for the damage you’ve caused.”

“This is un-fucking-believable...!” I started.

“Shhh now,” Kiera hushed gently, easing me away by the arm. “Don’t get yourself upset, Gabriel. We’ll find some other place to stay tonight. Then tomorrow you’ll be safe and sound back in your secure unit.”

Doing her best to hide a smile, she looked up at me and said, “Gabriel was lost, but I’ve found him again now.”

The campsite owner came towards me. Then, talking as if I wasn’t there at all, he sighed and said, “Poor fella. In the daylight, I can see he ain’t exactly normal. He’s got that vacant look behind the eyes. I can tell he’s not too tightly wrapped.” Then, reaching into his trouser pocket, he produced a bar of chocolate. “Go on, son, take it. It’s a little treat. I’m sure your social worker won’t mind me giving it to you. It is okay if I give him some chocolate, ain’t it?” he said, glancing at Kiera.

“Sure,” Kiera smiled. “Take the chocolate from the nice man, Gabe.”

“You’re enjoying this aren’t you?” I growled at her. Turning to face the campsite owner, I added, “You can stick your chocolate bar right up your fu...”

“We should be going,” Murphy suddenly cut in. “Gabriel is starting to get upset again.”

“I think you’re right,” Kiera said, guiding me by the arm towards the car. “Say goodbye to the nice man.”

“The nice man can go fu...” I started to say.

“Fuck, she’s a heavy girl,” he wheezed.

Murphy shot him a look.

“Sorry,” Potter muttered and doubled his efforts.

......... And then I found myself upset L L L L

I hold onto my theories in the hope I am right, or at least partially right.

As it stands, Tim and I have a date in the playground...... the sandpit to be exact.

‘Dead Wolf’ Book 5 in Kiera Hudson Series Two.

‘Dead Water’ Book 6 coming soon!

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Murphy is off to a potty mouthed, ten pin bowling start in his very own book.

I looked away, and using the Skin-walker’s head like a cannon ball, I shot it through the air at one of the Skin-walkers who was still attacking Potter. The decapitated head smacked into the face of the unsuspecting Skin-walker and I heard a sickening thud. He fell backwards onto his arse.

Stiiiiiirrriiikkkee!!!

Kayla, bless her, she has this blood thirsty vengeance hiding inside her that peeks out every now and then. Sam is still bobbling about. I keep waiting for Tim to prove Potter right or wrong.

I absolutely LOVE Murphy and Potter. They have this chemistry like no other characters I have come across. I could listen to them going off at each other all day. I have a grin plastered on my face when these two are communicating the only way they know how, with potty mouthed enthusiasm.

“You’d better open your eyes, or I’m going to rip you a new arsehole myself,” I roared down at him.

“I didn’t know you felt like that for me,” Potter suddenly croaked just above a whisper, his eyes closed.

To hear him speak, however juvenile his remark was, made me just want to grip him tight in my arms. Then, looking down at him, I dropped him back into the snow and barked, “Quit laying around in the snow and act your age.”

Potter groaned in pain as he hit the ground. “You took your fucking time.”

“In the future, will you do us all a big favour?”

“What’s that,” Potter winced, still holding his sides.

“If one of these wolves ever tries to sell you a talking parrot, check to see that there isn’t a tape recorder stuffed up its freaking arse!”

Heheheheeeeee...

Jack and Kiera. I can’t help thinking Jack makes a good argument. Before I had even read Murphy’s back story within this story, I could see how Jack needed his only family member to understand him, even if it meant trapping her to tell his story. I know he has done wrong. I get that. But I also see the little boy who didn’t have a chance.

His path was set.

He had been let down too many times.

Tim has a way of playing with my mind with Jack. I just want to erase his past and rewrite it for him. To give the little boy, who cared, a chance.

Potter, you do get yourself into trouble with the female sex. I did feel sorry for you. I’m sticking up for you, but you don’t make it easy.

“Couldn’t you feel her hairy tongue? After all, she had it shoved far enough down the back of your throat.”

Murphy has a closet of skeletons that are rattling about. His back story just had me crushing on him more.

I LOVED soooo much how Tim incorporated the classic, Wizard of Oz into his story line. It was done beautifully. It was one of my favourite scenes in this book, watching the teenage version of Murphy, James, being young and innocent, and also a little dangerous for the friend who meant so much to him.

These two made you forget the danger and distrust that normally exists between Lycanthrope and Vampyrus, the evil that is associated with Lycanthrope. We instead see a beautiful girl and a young boy showing us a possibility. We want it to work out. But will it?

“Sometimes, Potter, you can’t always help who you fall in love with.”

Such innocence.

I really like Pen. We see Jack and how his life was destroyed. His innocence crushed. We watch Murphy tell us about the love that could not be with a twist that is very sad that snuck up on me.

Then we come to those ‘slippers’.

Sentimental, Murphy? Much.

I loved getting a bit of a full circle in this book. Ragged Cove is where we met the Sarge and we see Murphy in Police mode again in Dead Wolf. Memories of Vampire Shift came back to me, where it all started, where I met the pipe smoking, slipper wearing Sergeant Murphy.

Boy, has there been some house cleaning since then. Who knew?

I have another fave scene in this book. It is the polar opposite to singing along to the Wizard of Oz and drinking Inferno Berry juice and sweet innocence. I think anybody who has read this book will not be able to forget the totally brilliant scene that played visually all through our heads. We were singing/rapping the words and we all shot off to youtube and brought up ‘Jump Around’. This was a scene that just worked so well.

Like, wicked!

When I call characters or scenes 3D, this was one of those. I even reread the scene with the music pumping through it.

It just worked. The words were threatening and intense. It would look crazy good on the big screen.

Oh, and those statues...........*face plant*

Tim has us in our comfy reading place for most of this book watching Murphy's back story play out, this is another one of his more emotional reads, rather than action packed. The bastard trio flipped my bitch switch, and the mystery of Kayla and Sam is planted. Will Potter be right? I love the seeds that got spread about in this book. Me thinks we are all rather intrigued to find how they grow.

FAVE QUOTE:

“You can’t be a wolf – you don’t have a hairy tongue!”

‘Dead Seth’ is Book 4 in Kiera Hudson Series Two.

‘Dead Water’ Book 5 in Kiera Hudson Series Two – Coming Christmas 2012!

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

“We share nothing,” I whispered, my words coming out slow and
labored.

“We’ll see,” he said, taking his bandana and wiping the blood from his lips. “We both understand loss.”

“I haven’t lost myself,” I breathed. “Not like you, Jack.”

“Perhaps not,” he said, sitting back in his chair. “But we have both lost people that we love. We have both been lied to and been betrayed by them.”

“That hasn’t made me a monster like you,” I said.......

This book was like a crescendo of words. The build up to .........well, I can’t say but it is rather explosive!

KabOOoooooMMMmmmm!!

‘Dead Statues’ had me in this incredible natural high of banter, emotion, fast paced storyline. Murphy and Potter, they have such magical character chemistry.

Tim swings us away from the banter and all the other characters we are used to in this instalment. This is a private showing with few characters we already know and we meet new characters. I am going to put it out there, I think every individual reader is going to think they had sorted Jack Seth in their mind from all the previous works Tim has written in the Kiera Hudson series.

I know I had.

But......!!!!!

I am a mum and I ‘feel’ for the lost boy.

Tim gives us intermissions of the Jack Seth we know and a story within a story of Jack who like the best of the baddies we know of, they were all once a child.

What makes an evil person go from a little boy to a man that let the curse take him over and devour the good in that boy, the good in Jack, eat it up until there was nothing left but a shell of a character that thrived on evil and the despicable?

What does it take?

This story is chilling, emotional, you will ‘feel’ at times different towards Jack, you can’t help it, there will be gore.

By the time you have finished this, you will be banging on Tim’s facebook door wanting Dead Water and no doubt you will be like me and left a bit like one of Tim’s statues.

The ‘Tim Factor’ is ever present, and you will be shocked. I can say no more as always in Tim’s books, he is becoming quite the Master of Deceit and he will twist you into a knot.

I must mention the brilliant cover. It does grab your attention, Jack Seth with Kiera in his clutches. This cover does evoke feelings in the viewer. It definitely has a 3D 'feel' to it for me. Miss Suzi Midnight cover designer has done it again.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

“See you later, alligator.”
With a lump in my throat, and unable to look back, I whispered, “In a while, crocodile.”

I’m going to say it. Dead Statues is the BEST book so far in the second Kiera Hudson series. I wouldn’t normally choose best books, but, Tim had my cheeks hurting within the first five chapters. I’m not talking my sweet-cheeks, I’m talking my face, lol!

I know, that wasn’t funny:(

Murphy and Potter together just ‘feels’ like home to me, they are so comfortable with each other and I sensed that it gave Potter a bit of a reprieve from being the oldest one. He got to have his older friend to shoulder some of what is thrown at them. Murphy brings out that banter and snark that I love about Potter. But we also get to see another deeper , more caring side to Potter....*sniff*

Tim had me laughing, and then I was getting thrown into those action scenes that Tim does so well. Whether they are on a moving vehicle, in the air ,or on the ground, when the wings come out, the action was on, double time!

I did laugh at all the potty mouth that all the characters were using. Everybody was putting money in the swear jar and I LOVED it!

“I hardly touched him,” Potter said. Then looking down at Sam, he added, “You’d better man-up or wolf-out, boy, because some of your furry friends are getting ready to tear us all a new set of arseholes!”

“Really?” Potter barked. Then turning his attention back at Sam, he added. “Did you sue him?”
   “Sue who?” Sam asked confused.
“Your fucking hairdresser,” Potter grinned rolling up his sleeves, readying himself for the Skin-walkers who were growing ever nearer. “If I came out looking like you with hair and shit sprouting outta me, I’d be demanding a refund.”

However hard you try Kayla, you can’t polish a turd.”
“I’m not a piece of shit!” Sam barked at him, his eyes glowing
fiercely.
“Glad to hear it,” Potter smiled at him. “Because now you’re gonna get a chance to prove it.”

This book is from Kiera and Potter’s POV’s . Potter stole the show for most of it. Whether he was bantering with Murphy, Sam, getting deep with Kayla, putting his foot in his mouth with Kiera BIG TIME, or just having the gang back together and being Potter.

Between you and me Kiera, Potter really does have to explain that Sophie business.

* raises one eyebrow at Potter *

I felt very sorry for Kiera, I don’t blame her for thinking what she was thinking.

“Don’t you dare call me that!” I shouted, just inches from his face. “I’m not your tiger – sweet-cheeks – or anything else. Why don’t you just fuck off?”

Tim has sown those seeds again, little bits. The statues have got my theory juices bubbling away. We learn more, but Tim only lets us in on a bit. The statue morsels he spreads about like breadcrumbs, my theories are getting a bit more solid now.

Poor Kiera and the choices she is being forced to make. Tim you are being rather hard on Kiera. I 'felt' ALL of that particular scene between Kiera and........

In true Tim style he gives us the mystery and action mixed with some smexi that is....................... lordy, Potter has some explaining to do. The gorey scenes are still there, the LOL moments and the banter that I love.

Tim is just so comfortable with Potter and Murphy. These two are the odd couple with Murphy and his pipe and comfy slippers , they are so good together. I laugh so much when these two are together.

With his thick, white hair blowing back off his brow, and pipe
dangling from the corner of his mouth, he roared up at us, “What are you waiting for, you fucking Muppets! Jump!”

He looked down at his slippers which were now covered in mud. “Oh sweet Jesus,” he groaned.
“Is that all you’re worried about?” I snapped at him as he stood looking down at his feet in the pale morning light.
“I’ve had these for years,” he grumbled at me.

“You could’ve fooled me. You went screaming across the roof of that train like fucking Beaker. All you needed was the bright orange hair and I would’ve never known the difference.”

“I’m sorry to piss all over your fantasy, sarge,” I cut in, “but can’t you just take your shirt off a little bit quicker and get your claws out?”
“Okay, okay, don’t hassle me,” Murphy complained. “You know I don’t like to spoil my uniform. I just hate those goddamn creases you get when you just rip your shirt off and...”
“Fuck the creases!” I shouted. “Claw up right now or we’re gonna die!”

“Just like old times,” Murphy grumbled, as he lashed out at a
berserker who dared to stick its snout through the window.
“You wouldn’t want it any other way, you old fart,” I said, burying my right claw into the eyes of a berserker which was scrambling through one of the broken windows.

This installment in the series was particularly made for a movie I thought. Visually awesome, dialogue was hilarious, and touching, with a touch of manic thrown in there for good measure.

If you haven't started Kiera Hudson series, start off at Vampire Shift and work your way through to the second series. I can assure you , Tim has a unique style of quirky, British humor, with characters you connect so well with, and a mystery that he weaves through each series that would stump Inspector Morse.

I 'feel' very invested in this series and indeed in all of Tim's works. He just has that 'Tim Factor'  he stamps on each book that has us coming back for more, demanding when the next book is releasing.

Little brother from another mother, you've got a gift:)

DOORWAYS is another series Tim is writing. He has written book # 1 this is the cover art and wallpaper art Miss Suzi designed. Couple of the images in this posting are a bit squished , it's due to the template I am using to frame these. It's not what it would actually look like.

This is just a sample of what Carles and Suzi have been up to with their awesome skills for Tim's book series'.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

"See you later, alligator."
"In a while, crocodile...."

We all know how much I love Tim’s stories and how they can make me laugh. This instalment is no exception........ but it also made me cry....... the ugly cry, darn it!

Tim sows more seeds in this instalment..... watch carefully. He plays with our mind cleverly and sneakily.

He wrote a wonderful scene with Melody Rose. I will let you find out who she is, and what scene.

Potter is still such fun with his cranky banter, and grumpy moods with Isidor, who I like to refer to as, Isi.

"Mind the statue,"  Isidor called out.
"Fuck the statues," Potter shouted back over his shoulder.

"Have you seen him back there with all the hair and stuff?  He looks like Captain-fucking-Caveman!"

“I think he’s part wolf and part human,” Isidor said.
“No shit, Sherlock!” Potter glared, picking his coat up off the road and putting it on.

I do laugh out loud at the banter, but, Isi also has a sensitive side that can get hurt deeply.

*cue tissue box appearing*

Isi has a story to tell everybody before our crew leave the train station they have found themselves sheltering at..... errr ... this is after the rather *fans one self* scene *waggles eyebrows*.

I was wondering where Tim was going with Isi’s story telling, but I should know better, when Tim is writing his words, those cogs are turning in his brain and we never know where he is going until the last page.

I am trying to figure Potter out at the moment, some little secrets there.....hmmmm!

Oh , and those darn statues, the mystery is still a mystery. I’ll be buggered if I can work out what he is doing with those. I have theories. After this instalment I have other theories.

Lordy, he has added more puzzle pieces to my bag of theories and a bin of snotty tissues. *whispers* I feel kinda , like I need another tissue *sniff*

CHARACTER WALLPAPER REVEAL - ISIDOR SMITH - KIERA HUDSON SERIES by TIM O'ROURKE

ISIDOR SMITH

I have been sooooo busting to see what Isi looks like from the creative mind of Miss Suzi Midnight and she has not disappointed! Isi has that shaggy doo , eye brow piercing, tattoo, chippendale abs, down perfect and not to forget that little bit of fluff on his chin.

Isi is da bomb!!
