BOOK REVIEW: WITCH'S DAWN by CRYSTAL ASH - UNHOLY TRINITY # 1 - PARANORMAL - REVERSE HAREM

By: Crystal Ash
Published By: Crystal Ash
Released: Available Now
Details: Kindle purchase, 130 Pages

RATING: 4.25 UNHOLY STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

One day, I’m nobody. The next, I’m a witch. And I’ve caught the attention of three smoking hot demons.

I left home to start over, to escape a world I never fit in. I soon learned that my past was a lie. My parents suppressed my magical abilities and tried to make me forget my true nature. They almost succeeded.

Now my real grandmother is back in my life and teaching me the craft of our people. After living my whole life without magic, I feel like a blind woman seeing for the first time.

But three devilishly handsome men are saying there’s more to my story. I see them everywhere, even in my dreams which are starting to feel like distant memories.

They say I’m not an ordinary witch. My grandmother says not to trust them. Who do I believe?

18+ reverse harem Some scenes may be triggering to some readers

BOOK REVIEW:

I’ve been scrolling about on Amazon in the paranormal romance genre and picked Witch’s Dawn up for .74c US. The cover caught my eye.

This is a short story at 130 pages and in saying that, I did feel I would have liked a touch more of the story moving me a little more into the series in this first installment to latch onto.

Now, I know some readers aren’t overly pleased with the erm… way Crystal has written the religious tones to this story, but that would be the triggers she adds at the bottom of her blurb.

You just gotta look at the series title 'Unholy Trinity' which gives you the first hint, things are gonna go a little in reverse (no pun intended).

I’m a person that believes anything is possible and I don’t put a label on it. So that is where I stand with religion. I’m not batting for the devil team though. I am thinking along the lines that there is something out there waiting for me when it’s my time and I’m being very open to what is waiting for me on the other side. I am hoping it is all good though and we get to meet up with family members and everything is rosy.

Having said that, I do like how brave Crystal is and I will say unique in bringing a different spin to the reverse harem storytelling. Sure it might trigger some readers and I also understand why that would be so.

I am going with how I felt about reading this first installment and even though I did pull one of those oOOookkkaaaay types of faces in certain parts, it is a fictional story and I am basing my review on the quality of what I read.

Not if it made my eye twitch a few times.

Ash, Raum, and Sal would be the spunky demons and Deja would be the twenty-eight-year-old chickie-babe who does not know what she really is until…

Raum, the one with the shoulder-length dark hair and a raven tattoo on his forearm spoke first. His eyes, dark and deep as a midnight lake, gleamed mischievously. He was the troublemaker, the one I really had to watch out for.

Sal, the one with the stunning green eyes and auburn hair took the seat on the other side of me. His power was the most volatile, ready to strike at any moment. The aura surrounding him crackled with energy that felt like a mixture of simmering rage warning me to stay away, and fiery passion daring me to come closer.

Only Ash remained standing, the quiet, aloof leader of the bunch. He regarded me with icy-blue eyes that burned with curiosity and seemed to take in every detail of me. A hand stroked his short blond beard thoughtfully. The motion made him look like some wise Viking scholar who also happened to be tall and broad enough to go into battle.

Anywho in reverse harem style, the demon lads get a little sexy with Deja and she starts to kind of awaken in little bits along the way.

“Deja,” one mouth growled possessively against my throat.

“Who are you?” I moaned, barely able to breathe with my pulse hammering so hard, my insides so hot on the verge of exploding.

Once you've read this story, the cover art reveals a lot more. This I likey.

Overall I did enjoy this short read, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm looking forward to knowing more.

BOOK REVIEW: INSTITUTE OF MAGIC by LINSEY HALL - DRAGON'S GIFT: THE DRUID # 1 - URBAN FANTASY

By: Linsey Hall

Published By: Bonnie Doon Press
Released: Available Now
Details: Kindle purchase, 246 Pages

RATING: 4.25 LACHLAN STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Where winning means survival.

According to legend, I’m supposed to be some kind of all-powerful DragonGod—gifted with the magic of gods. Instead, I’m a dud. In fact, I'm currently failing out of the Undercover Protectorate’s magical institute.

It's the supernatural version of Scotland Yard, and I’ve got one chance left to earn my place here. To do so, I have to compete in a deadly race across the world. In order to win, I need to survive. And I’ll need the help of a sexy and powerful shifter mage named Lachlan Munroe.

When we figure out that the race is rigged, Lachlan and I must rely on each other to make it through. But will I be able to learn enough magic to save my life?

BOOK REVIEW:

I was drawn in by the beautiful cover art for my first Linsey Hall read...One click!

I really enjoyed meeting Ana and Lachlan and the whole cast of interesting characters, including the Cats of Catastrophe. They are this fun trio of sidekicks.

The first chapter starts off fast-paced as we follow, Ana, a Dragon God, whose magic hasn’t developed fully yet as she battles demons and anything else thrown in her path during the trainee obstacle course, in Edinburgh.

The Undercover Protectorate Institute is dedicated to helping supernaturals with problems that were so dangerous the magical government didn’t want to handle them.

Ana Blackwood is training at the Academy to eventually graduate and join the Protectorate like her sister, Bree, who joined the Paranormal Investigative Team.

Enter Lachlan Munroe. He has a job that needs all hands on deck, including the trainee, Ana.

The man standing at the front was insanely beautiful—in a raw, powerful kind of way. He had to be well over six feet tall. Though he wore dark jeans and a black jacket, it wasn’t had to see that he was built like a boxer.

But his face…

Like a fallen angel, here to deliver justice. But a dark angel, with black hair and eyes. Handsome, yet a tiny bit scary in his perfection.

I really like Lachlan’s character. There is this insta-attraction and naturally, he picks Ana to work closely with on a retrieval mission.

Sparks fly, hearts flutter.

Ana is intelligent and has a good heart. She works well with Lachlan at her side and when she needs to, takes the initiative.

I sprinted around the pool, naked as a jaybird and way too close to getting hit in the face with my own boobs.

This book is a page-turner where visually I saw it all play out well in my mind. The action and battle scenes were choreographed well and painted an exciting picture in my mind as it all played out.

I have not read the other Dragon’s Gift series’ as yet, where some of the sub characters that pop up in The Druid # 1 have their own stories.

The Dragon’s Gift reading order is:

The Huntress (Cass Clereaux)

The Seeker (Del Bellator)

The Protector (Nix Knight)

The Valkyrie (Bree Blackwood)

The Druid (Ana Blackwood)

Linsey wrote this first book in The Druid series as though I didn’t have to know the characters from the previous spin-off series’ to read this one. Usually, I would read in the best reading order the author recommends, but this time I decided to go a little crazy and be a rebel to my own rules.

I do love what I read about Bree’s character in this book, so I am keen to read The Valkyrie series next.

Overall, I am excited to read more of Linsey’s work.

BOOK REVIEW: VISION IN SILVER by ANNE BISHOP - THE OTHERS # 3 - PARANORMAL/URBAN FANTASY - ROC

By: Anne Bishop
Published By: Roc
Released: Available Now
Details: Hardback from the library, 400 Pages

RATING: 4.25 OTHERS STARS

Blurb: Goodreads

The Others freed the cassandra sangue to protect the blood prophets from exploitation, not realizing their actions would have dire consequences. Now the fragile seers are in greater danger than ever before; both from their own weaknesses and from those who seek to control their divinations for wicked purposes. In desperate need of answers, Simon Wolfgard, a shape-shifter leader among the Others, has no choice but to enlist blood prophet Meg Corbyn’s help, regardless of the risks she faces by aiding him.

Meg is still deep in the throes of her addiction to the euphoria she feels when she cuts and speaks prophecy. She knows each slice of her blade tempts death. But Others and humans alike need answers, and her visions may be Simon’s only hope of ending the conflict.

For the shadows of war are deepening across the Atlantik, and the prejudice of a fanatic faction is threatening to bring the battle right to Meg and Simon’s doorstep…

BOOK REVIEW:

This series is raved about and gets so many five stars and glowing reviews, and that is absolutely freakin’ fantastic!

I do personally find it very, very slow-paced.

I am addicted to reading the series…but not a lot happens inside each book for such thick books.

But I’m addicted.

This series is so different, and it really is Simon’s series, he kinda owns it with Meg playing side-character, even more so in this installment, but yet she is the reason for the series. But this story was also shared with Monty and Lizzy.

I don’t have any quotes that stood out and that annoys me because I feel as though I should have some.

Visually I see everything so clearly, but it is like a slow stroll in the park the action side to the story, and that kinda bothers me too for a paranormal/urban fantasy read.

There was one fighting scene that stood out for me. Simon got hurt, shit went down, and tragedy happened. But Meg is still giving out sugar cubes, sorting the mail and thinking about her feelings for Simon. Now the girls have banded together to help the other Blood Prophets survive outside of their previously controlled existence.

Simon is a smart wolf, but he seems so clueless with Meg. He owns a bookstore, he needs to order in a self-help book on ‘How to have a relationship’ and have a thorough read. I get that Anne is showing us two individuals having a hard time working out how to hold hands and what it means, but, this is the third book in the series.

Time to grab that hand and… well, we are halfway there. ;)

I like the introduction of the mysterious ‘other’ above Simon and the da…da…da…daaaaaa moment.

I feel as though I need a break and will continue Marked In Flesh at a later date.

BOOK REVIEW: NIGHT EMBRACE by SHERRILYN KENYON - DARK HUNTER # 2 - PARANORMAL ROMANCE - PIATKUS

By: Sherrilyn Kenyon
Published By: Piatkus
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback 424 Pages

RATING: 4.25 TALON STARS

Blurb: Goodreads

Setting: Modern New Orleans

"Night Embrace" spins the story of Talon, an ancient Celtic warrior who killed the son of the god Camulus.

Camulus cursed Talon, decreeing death for everyone he loved. Now a Dark-Hunter in modern-day New Orleans, Talon meets Sunshine, who is key to ending his curse once and for all. Not to mention helping him to save New Orleans from an ancient god bent on total destruction.

See original cover listed below. The cover shown here is the reissued cover that was done seven years ago.

BOOK REVIEW:

It was kinda hard reading this story and staying focused on Talon and Sunny when there were Zarek and Acheron.

What book number do I have to plow through to read Acheron’s HEA?

14! You say?

So glad I only had the book after this one to read Zarek’s HEA. Another book closer to Acheron's. #win

Anywho, I tangent, back to Talon and Sunny. I liked this couple…but Zarek…I mean Talon… what was I saying?

You gotta love a guy who has pet alligators who guard his swamp home. You wouldn’t think a swamp home sounds cool—but the alligators!!!

I could go on about Talon’s past and the curse and such, but eh, I’m like the gazillionth reader and it’s all been said before.

Talon and Sunny do like to get crazy and make like bunnies, and that is okay.

Let’s talk Vane Kattalakis, the werewolf of werewolves. We get introduced to him and my lady boner radar went off.

He entered the cabin wearing a pair of faded jeans and a white T-shirt with a weathered motorcycle jacket, black cowboy boots, and a body that would cause a traffic jam.

He rocks the hair highlights too. ;)

And then we get a science lesson about warp space because the dude is full of surprises.

He shrugged his jacket back on. “Baby, in this world, I’m the all-powerful OZ and there’s not much I can’t do.”

And then there was Bride McTierney… I think I may have lost Vane already. *sigh*

This was a great installment in the series. I really am digging this whole dark hunter world and the Gods that pop in and out causing trouble and telling porky-pies.

Gotta say I did open up Dance With The Devil straight away.

*whispers* Zarek.

*squeee*

Stay tuned I shall tell you my thoughts on his book next.

BOOK REVIEW: BLOOD OF THE EARTH by FAITH HUNTER - SOULWOOD # 1 - URBAN FANTASY - PENGUIN

By: Faith Hunter
Published By: Penguin
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 358 Pages

RATING: 4.25 NELL STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Set in the same world as the New York Times bestselling Jane Yellowrock novels, an all-new series starring Nell Ingram, who wields powers as old as the earth.

When Nell Ingram met skinwalker Jane Yellowrock, she was almost alone in the world, exiled by both choice and fear from the cult she was raised in, defending herself with the magic she drew from her deep connection to the forest that surrounds her.

Now, Jane has referred Nell to PsyLED, a Homeland Security agency policing paranormals, and agent Rick LaFleur has shown up at Nell’s doorstep. His appearance forces her out of her isolated life into an investigation that leads to the vampire Blood Master of Nashville.

Nell has a team—and a mission. But to find the Master’s kidnapped vassal, Nell and the PsyLED team will be forced to go deep into the heart of the very cult Nell fears, infiltrating the cult and a humans-only terrorist group before time runs out…

BOOK REVIEW:

I’ve been interested to read some Faith Hunter since I noticed the Jane Yellowrock series. I have not started the Jane Yellowrock series yet, but headed straight into the Soulwood series.

I don’t normally read like this, skipping the original series before the spinoff, but my local library simply does not stock Jane Yellowrock, so away I went meeting Nell when I saw it on the shelf.

I found I could quite easily read Blood of the Earth without any prior knowledge of Jane Yellowrock series. I met Rick in this spinoff series and from some of the reviews I have read of Jane Yellowrock he was possibly a bit of an ass in that series? I found him to be fair and authoritative in this book. Only once did Nell have to put him in his place and she did it with pure female grunt.

The only thing I am curious to know is about Rick and Paka’s situation/relationship, which would have been revealed in the Jane Yellowrock series. Rick was Jane’s boyfriend, yet there is some witchy-shiz going on between Rick and Paka. Not love, but they are together and Paka seems the only one pleased.

Nell is a great character and Faith lifted several layers for me to see under in this book. Watching Nell discover bit by bit what she could achieve with the powers she is still discovering was very intriguing. Faith does have a way with words. These moments I really enjoyed.

I gulped breaths, calming my heart, and shifted position until I could place both hands on the dirt, both soles on the roots, my spine and the back of my head against the tree, looking up into the limbs. It was miserable cold, but I could feel the ground beneath me, solid and sandy, rock and stone and feel dirt, clay and layers of long-rotten leaves, water rising through the ground, under pressure, surface water falling down the hills, under gravity. Water spreading out, feeding rootlets and moistening seeds and dancing through the air as it splashed over rocks. My breath came easier, and the panic began to slide away. With the sun gone, the earth was at rest and yet never resting. Always alive and breathing and moving and pumping nutrients. Animals slept in the nooks of trees and rocks, in nests, in dens, and curled in tall grasses. Others hunted. I reached out with my senses, into the ground, and felt the earth, the contentment that was life, and the health of the trees.

Don’t expect any romance in this book; although I would love at this early stage to see her and Occam shipping. They appear like they have a connection… or something. At first I thought it was Tandy, but he’s not right for Nell, if she is to ever have herself a relationship away from the church—something different to John—I hope it is with Occam, at this early stage.

Sunlight turned Occam’s lightly tanned skin a pale gold, and made his amber-hazel eyes glow. He was wearing loose cotton pants and a stretchy T-shirt, the clothing dark blue with the words PsyLED stenciled on the shirt in white. And he was barefooted again, toes pawing the ground, the way a cat might milk the earth.

Tandy and Occam are my fave sub characters so far.

I LOVE urban fantasy and I did find this first book to be very, very slow for me for about the first 40% of the book. Eh, it could just be me, but I did find it hard to want to keep reading due to the pace—initially—it did get more exciting the more I turned the pages. I normally like a little faster paced urban fantasy, where I get more action and quicker information.

The one thing about Faith’s writing is she is über descriptive and sometimes that was great and sometimes I felt I didn’t need to know every single thing Nell was doing in the kitchen as an example, but that is just me. Descriptive is awesome, but I found this book could be over descriptive when maybe not necessary.

Eh, each to their own.

I’ll be getting my hands on the first paperback in Jane Yellowrock series soon, as I am intrigued to know her character and this Rick business. The Soulwood series was more a spontaneous reaction to grab from the library shelf when I realized Jane Y series simply wasn’t available.

I can’t finish up without mentioning the cover art, which is absolutely amazing… beautiful! Seeing Nell on the cover with the forest floor swirling around her has great meaning.

BOOK REVIEW: DEAD UNTIL DARK by CHARLAINE HARRIS - SOOKIE STACKHOUSE # 1 - PARANORMAL ROMANCE - PENGUIN

By: Charlaine Harris
Published By: Penguin
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 312 Pages

RATING: 4.25 STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life-and one of her coworkers checks out....

Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea.

BOOK REVIEW:

Folks, I’m a virgin to the Sookie Stackhouse (I keep wanting to say Steakhouse) series and I have never watched True Blood, so I am reviewing without comparison.

I’m not sure how I feel about Sookie and Bill’s coming together at this stage. I will leave that open. I will say it didn’t make a great impact on me in Dead Until Dark.

To be truthful I thought Bill may have needed a little more oomph injected into his character, but I shall hold no judgement until I read more in the series.

Eric’s character, although only a very small part he played in this first book, made me pay attention a little more.

Visually in my head, when I first read his description, I felt he came across in my mind more like a biker looking guy with his jeans, boots and vest. Then I googled True Blood and saw their Eric.

The vampire he indicated was handsome, in fact, radiant; blond and blue-eyed, tall and broad shouldered. He was wearing boots, jeans, and a vest. Period. Kind of like the guys on the cover of romance books. He scared me to death.

I do understand this series has sold a bazillion million copies and I am coming into the series very late in the game. My thoughts are but a drip in the ocean.

I was entertained, and that is all I can ask for, but I would have liked a little more from Sookie and Bill in regards to their relationship (?) and not just the sexual content. I kind of craved more, wanting to connect with them as the reader.

All up, it was a quick read that has me intrigued to know more… especially about Eric.

BOOK REVIEW : MIDNIGHT SECRETS by ELLA GRACE - WILDEFIRE # 1 - SUSPENSE ROMANCE - HEADLINE

By: Ella Grace aka Christy Reece
Published By: Headline
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 418 Pages

RATING: 4.25 ZACH STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

On a hot southern night, with a storm on the horizon, a family is shattered. Three beautiful daughters—Savannah, Samantha, and Sabrina Wilde—go on with their lives, each significantly changed, as they bear the memory of the murder-suicide that killed their parents. For years, they have stayed away from Midnight, Alabama. Until Midnight calls them home.

Savannah is the first one back, when a grueling case in Nashville leads the young prosecutor to seek shelter in the quiet of the once grand Wilde mansion. But when she finds letters casting doubt on her family’s dark, shameful past, she realizes that peace in Midnight is a shallow façade and sinister secrets lurk beneath the surface. Zach Tanner, once the town’s bad boy, is now the new police chief and still has a wild hold over her. Zach can feel it, too, but he hurt Savannah once. As teenagers, they broke every rule together. Now it’s his job to keep her safe, even though he isn’t sure who her enemies are—or which ones might be his own.

BOOK REVIEW:

This first instalment in the series starts off referencing ten-year-old triplets, Savannah, Samantha and Sabrina Wilde and a horrible tragedy that befell them.

Fast forward eight years and we meet Savannah on her prom night—enter Zach Tanner.

Then we fast forward ten more years, equalling Savannah aged twenty-eight and Zach aged thirty.

The cover to this book made me think I was picking up a military type read. Possibly the title made me think this too, but I was wrong in my assumption. Sure the young Zach was bound for the military, but that is such a very small part of this book. Think underdog makes good and becomes the Chief of Police in the town of Midnight and picks up again with the love of his life, (he left behind) which he could so easily have sorted in the first place with verbal communication. But where is the angst in that? I was thinking it must be something extremely huge for Zach to have promised her what he did and then wasted ten years.

Somebody wants Savannah dead and Zach isn’t gonna let that happen and he’s also not going to waste anymore time.

Bravo!

All sisters have gone onto have careers in: law, law enforcement and private investigator. To this I wondered why the author used two of the sisters at such a late date… considering.

I enjoyed Savannah and Zach’s story, but I did feel the basis for Savannah coming back to the town of Midnight was great, but the rather rushed conclusion to the suspense that was woven throughout, was not great. The plot in this area felt a little deflated, for me personally.

I still really enjoyed this book and liked meeting Zach’s hot-security-company friends.

I will continue with this series. I like the sound of Sabrina’s character and would like to read her book.

I have to say as a side note: When triplets all have names like these three do, it can get hard on the reader separating them. Especially Savannah and Samantha.

Oh look! I found this cover for Kindle and I feel it better represents this story.

BOOK REVIEW - TWISTED by CYNTHIA EDEN - LOST # 2 - AVON BOOKS - SUSPENSE ROMANCE

By: Cynthia Eden
Published By: Avon Books
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 361 Pages

RATING: 4.25 DEAN STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

In the second seductive LOST novel from New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Eden, an obsessed Last Option Search Team agent goes looking for trouble—and finds her in the Big Easy.
Dean Bannon comes to New Orleans for one reason only: to track down a missing sixteen-year-old girl. That's before he meets the drop-dead gorgeous con artist who makes him want to lose his legendary control.

With her past, Emma Castille doesn't claim to be psychic. She just notices things other people don't. Like the fear in a runaway's eyes—or the pain in an ex-FBI agent's heart. Her chemistry with Dean is blistering, but Emma follows her passion . . . not someone else's orders.

Then a madman breaks into Emma's home and leaves a twisted message: You're next. Now Dean refuses to let her out of his sight until he pries every last secret from her full, sexy lips. And suddenly Emma's aching to give him everything he wants.

BOOK REVIEW:

Another instalment in the LOST series ( Last Option Search Team ) and I really enjoyed it. Even though the books are well over 300 pages long, they are the small books that are almost pocket books. This makes them a lot quicker reads than you would think looking at the page numbers.

Again with this series, I did find it a little too easy to work out who the villain was, mainly because if you pay attention, the author likes to make you think a certain way, that immediately has me going in the other direction. I am happy to say, book 3, Shattered, was not a predictable villain. It was virtually impossible to pick and I feel the author has learned how to now trick the reader. This is a good thing, because this is suspense romance genre, so we want to find it hard to pick the baddies.

Dean and Emma are great characters—but Jax Fontaine stole the show for me. When he was in the limelight…man, I loved reading him.

Cynthia has a wonderful talent for painting such visual scenes with her words and she doesn’t hold back on the stabby stabby.

Very pleased to see this series gets better and better.

Blurb: Goodreads

Except she'll need Kane's help to do it—and he's betrayed her with a secret of his own. Can she find a way to trust him and herself before Pyper is lost?

BOOK REVIEW:

This is my first foray into Deanna Chase’s written work. This book is lighter on plot and may appear at times a little rushed in areas that could have been fleshed out more, but I did still enjoy this first book and the characters, very much.

Jade is a very likable character and so is Kane the sexy strip club owner. There is a great line-up of sub characters to fill the storyline and an interesting ghost situation.

What I really liked was reading about Jade’s other job as a glass bead making teacher. It was nice to see a really different job for a female lead as opposed to the bartender job that a lot of female leads seem to get given.

Throw in a villain and some violence and you have yourself a paranormal mystery/romance.

I am looking forward to continuing this series.

Book 1 is currently free on Amazon HERE.

And when another Eve lookalike disappears, Gabe vows to protect Eve at all costs. While Eve may have forgotten the killer in her past, it's clear he hasn't forgotten her.

BOOK REVIEW:
This is my first Cynthia Eden read and I really enjoyed this suspense romance.

The characters are likable and we are introduced to intelligent men and women who work for Gabe under the title Last Option Search Team aka LOST.

I like this whole concept with Gabe putting a team together who work to find the people who have been lost to the system.

Eve walks into Gabe’s office and he takes her case and he also takes a lot more than that. *waggles eyebrows*

Enter Wade, Sarah, Victoria and Dean and you have a great line-up of characters.

The who-dunnit was kinda easy to spot fairly early into the plot. You have a fairly large suspicion, but that is okay. The villain was very creepy. I really liked all the descriptive. Visually I could see the picture painted very clearly in my mind while reading and the plot is very gritty.

I am über ready for Twisted # 2.

And to do it, Layne has to enlist everyone, including his ex-CIA mentor, Rocky’s detective brother, the town’s unpredictable informant and Layne’s two teenage sons all the while stopping Rocky from doing something crazy and keeping their game secret so Layne won't get himself dead.

BOOK REVIEW:

“Wounds to the flesh hurt but they heal fast. Wounds to the soul never go away. It’s how we cope with a pain that never dies that makes us the people we are. Daily, people demonstrate acts of courage just so they can get through the night.”

So without rehashing the story, in true KA style we have the alpha male lead, Tanner Layne—but he hates the name Tanner—and we have Rocky who left him eighteen years earlier, and they reunite.

Let the sexiness, alpha-erm-ness and more sexiness begin.

Layne has two sons: Jasper and Tripp. He has a relationship with them to rebuild and I really liked watching this happen. Jasper was a bit harder to break through to, but he came around.

Jasper and Tripp will truly be something when they get older. I feel a bit cougarish and a bit wrong thinking about them at their age now. Let these lads mature like a fine KA alpha.

Rocky is a great female lead. She is a really cool teacher, but she has some cobwebs in her closet that forced her to leave her true love—Layne.

There is of course the villain and a creepy sidekick. Throw in Ryker who sounds kinda scary, but he loves his woman and her daughter, so he goes all out to insert himself into Layne’s life and assist with the shit that is going down at the local church youth group.

Another great KA installment, although sometimes I feel these books could be many pages shorter due to a little repetitive dialogue.

Ty, Luke and Tack still have my heart, but I am still looking to add to this line-up of my #faveKAmen .

BOOK REVIEW - POWER PLAY by TIFFANY SNOW - RISKY BUSINESS # 1 - PIATKUS - CONTEMPORARY CRIME ROMANCE

By: Tiffany Snow
Published By: Piatkus
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 336 Pages

RATING: 4.25 PARKER AND RYKER STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

THIS KIND OF BUSINESS CAN ONLY BE PERSONAL

Sage Reese lives for her job. More precisely, she lives for her debonair boss, Parker Andersen. Sage handles everything for Parker, even as she fantasizes about the one thing that isn't in her job description: him. But when a high-stakes account crosses the line from shady to deadly, a tough cop starts giving Sage the attention she wishes Parker would . . .

Detective Dean Ryker couldn't be more different from Parker. While Parker wears expensive suits like a second skin and drives a BMW, Ryker's uniform is leather jackets and jeans . . . and his ride of choice is a Harley. While Parker's sexiness is a reserved, slow burn, Ryker is completely upfront about what-and who-he's after. And Sage tops his list.

Now, as Ryker digs deeper into the dark side of Parker's business, Sage finds herself caught between two men: the one she's always wanted-and the one who makes her feel wanted like never before . . .

BOOK REVIEW:

This first installment in Risky Business series had me whiplashed with how similar the recipe is for Kathleen Turner series.

Very similar, but I jumped feet first into the pages and devoured the book (while in hospital and couldn’t sleep) and I read it into the wee hours, while my roomie was softly snoring and making weird noises.

Okay, so now we have ex Marines: Parker and Ryker.

God damn these triangles are amazing.

I REALLY DON’T LIKE LOVE TRIANGLES.

But I like these ones.

This first installment had it all. Parker is simply amazing. In walks cocky Ryker and he is different and amazing.

We get some backstory.

Sage I really liked in this installment. She has her heart all crushing and hurting for Parker and he is the powerful investment guy who is mixing it up with the Russians. She is a hard worker and a team player in the office.

Sage isn’t as good a female lead as Kathleen, but I still liked her and the little bits with Megan, the chick from another part of the company.

There was so much sexual tension in this book between Parker and Sage that the pages were sizzling. He really is written very well.

Ryker has a massive chip on his shoulder with Parker and he wants to show Parker up as the bad guy.

Russian villains and action take over the story with Sage’s life on the line and I totally dug this book.

I launched myself into Playing Dirty straight away.

BOOK REVIEW - THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT by KATEE ROBERT - THE O'MALLEYS # 1 - PIATKUS - CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

By: Katee Robert
Published By: Piatkus
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 315 Pages

RATING: 4.25 TEAGUE & JAMES STARS

Blurb: Goodreads

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert begins a smoking hot new series about the O'Malley family-wealthy, powerful, dangerous and seething with scandal.

Teague O'Malley hates pretty much everything associated with his family's name. And when his father orders him to marry Callista Sheridan to create a "business" alliance, Teague's ready to tell his dad exactly where he can stuff his millions. But then Teague actually meets his new fiancée, sees the bruises on her neck and the fight still left in her big blue eyes, and vows he will do everything in his power to protect her.

Everyone knows the O'Malleys have a dangerous reputation. But Callie wasn't aware just what that meant until she saw Teague, the embodiment of lethal grace and coiled power. His slightest touch sizzles through her. But the closer they get, the more trouble they're in. Because Callie's keeping a dark secret-and what Teague doesn't know could get him killed.

BOOK REVIEW:

Three Boston mob families make their debut in The O’Malleys, The Marriage Contract.

Teague O’Malley is gorgeous and hits it off pretty quickly with Callista Sheridan, another mob daughter. He loves his siblings and wants to bring peace among the other Boston mob families.

Things are pretty sticky from the very start with something that goes down, and secrets must be kept. But secrets have a way of leading you down a path that has only one way out. Callista discovers this—the hard way.

Oh, my! I am a little giddy up with James Halloran (the other mob family). At first I was, meh, but then… *waggles eyebrows*

This is quite a light mob story. I have read some dark ones, but I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to James’ book.

*waggles eyebrows*

He made quite the impression on me.

A great start to this series and I will be continuing it.

RACING THE SUN BY KARINA HALLE - ATRIA - SIMON & SCHUSTER - CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

By: Karina Halle
Published By: Simon & Schuster, Atria
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 321 Pages

RATING: 4.25 DERIO STARS!

Goodreads: Blurb

It’s time for twenty-four-year-old Amber MacLean to face the music. After a frivolous six months of backpacking through New Zealand, Australia, and Southeast Asia, she finds herself broke on the Mediterranean without enough money for a plane ticket home to California. There are worse places to be stuck than the gorgeous coastline of southern Italy, but the only job she manages to secure involves teaching English to two of the brattiest children she’s ever met.

It doesn’t help that the children are under the care of their brooding older brother, Italian ex-motorcycle racer Desiderio Larosa. Darkly handsome and oh-so-mysterious, Derio tests Amber’s patience and will at every turn—not to mention her hormones.

But when her position as teacher turns into one as full-time nanny at the crumbling old villa, Amber finds herself growing closer to the enigmatic recluse and soon has to choose between the safety of her life back in the States and the uncertainty of Derio’s closely guarded heart.

BOOK REVIEW:

This is my first Karina Halle read. I have quite a lot on my Kindle, but haven’t cracked them open yet.

I really enjoyed Racing the Sun as my first KH read. I felt like I was in Capri and walking around the streets.

Desiderio Larosa or Derio shortened, which is less of a mouthful, is a captivating character in the early stages of the book. He has lost so much and he drinks, and broods, he locks himself away and behaves in all those ways that make us want to know more and get below the surface.

Amber and Derio… My-oh-my do they have some toe curling sexual encounters in the most beautiful scenic places.

I absolutely loved Derio’s character…da …da…da…daaaaaa—until…

It was like a whiplash to my heart. Interesting change in direction KH went with his character. It felt kinda odd.

It didn’t stop me enjoying the story. It just felt a bit sudden and not in line with his previous behaviour, considering Amber’s situation and job title and his relationship to the children. I get what she was doing, but at the same time…

A wonderful start to my KH reading journey. I am looking forward to cracking open some more of her works.

BOOK REVIEW - MAID FOR LOVE by MARIE FORCE - GANSETT ISLAND # 1 - CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

By: Marie Force
Published By: Marie Force
Released: Available Now
Details: Kindle FREE

RATING: 4.25 MAC STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Maddie Chester is determined to leave her hometown of Gansett Island, a place that has brought her only bad memories and ugly rumors. Then she’s knocked off her bike on the way to her housekeeping job at McCarthy’s Resort Hotel by Gansett’s “favorite son,” Mac McCarthy. He’s back in town to help his father with preparations to sell the family resort and has no intention of staying long. When Mac accidentally sends Maddie flying over the handlebars, badly injuring her, he moves in to nurse her back to health and help care for her young son. He soon realizes his plans for a hit-and-run visit to the island are in serious jeopardy, and he just may be “maid” for love.

BOOK REVIEW:

The Gansett Island series first came to my attention last year when a review for the Men Of Ocean Beach series – Joy Is Found, by Emma James stated:

This type of storyline with all the different characters interacting through each book reminds me of Anne Mercier's Rockstar series and Marie Force's Gansett Island and Green Mountain series', which isn't a bad thing because those series are up there in my all time faves.

(excerpt from review of Joy Is Found , Men Of Ocean Beach # 3 by Dawn - Goodreads)

Needless to say I had to find the first book in Gansett Island and read it. Men Of Ocean Beach series is one of my fave. *wink*

Checking my Kindle I realized I had purchased this book in 2012, so away I went.

***FREEBIE ALERT***

Note: Currently FREEEEEEEEEEE here : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YKZIGI/ref=series_rw_dp_sw

Maid for Love has over 2200 ratings on Amazon.

This was a sweet read with some heat in the romance to keep the readers warm. I am really looking forward to reading more in this series.

I could visually see Gansett Island as I was reading and I liked it a whole lot. I also liked the bunch of hunks who work there or are part of the McCarthy family.

This was a great pool side read where nothing is too deep, but the hunky lads will keep you coming back for more.

Huzzah!!

BOOK REVIEW - TWIST by KYLIE SCOTT - DIVE BAR # 2 - PAN MACMILLAN - ADULT CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

By: Kylie Scott
Published By: Pan Macmillan
Released: Available Now
Details : Paperback from publisher for honest review

RATING: 4.25 JOE STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

When his younger brother loses interest in online dating, hot, bearded, bartender extraordinaire, Joe Collins, only intends to log into his account and shut it down. Until he reads about her.

Alex Parks is funny, friendly, and pretty much everything he's been looking for in a woman. And in no time at all they're emailing up a storm, telling each other their deepest darkest secrets... apart from the one that really matters.

And when it comes to love, serving it straight up works better than with a twist.

BOOK REVIEW:

Another nice easy read in the Dive Bar series.

This series hasn’t so far grabbed me—as much as the Stage Dive series—but it is still a very enjoyable series.

Joe and Alex have an unusual start to their HEA. Angst plays a rather large part in Twist.

I am very intrigued by Eric’s character. He can appear a bit of a douche sometimes and others…

Looking forward to Chaser and Eric’s story and maybe getting a little deeper.

I’m always gonna crack open a Kylie Scott read.

BOOK REVIEW - ELEVEN ON TOP by JANET EVANOVICH - STEPHANIE PLUM # 11 - HEADLINE - CONTEMPORARY CRIME

By: Janet Evanovich
Published By: Headline
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback, OP Shop find, 371 Pages

RATING: 4.25 RANGER 'BABE' STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Stephanie Plum is thinking her career as a fugitive apprehension agent has run its course. She's been shot at, spat at, cussed at, fire-bombed, mooned, and attacked by dogs. Stephanie thinks it's time for a change. So she quits. She wants something safe and normal. But the kind of trouble she had at the bail bonds office can't compare to the kind of trouble she finds herself facing now...

Stephanie is stalked by a maniac returned from the grave for the sole purpose of putting her into a burial plot of her own. He's killed before, and he'll kill again if given the chance. Caught between staying far away from the bounty hunter business and staying alive, Stephanie reexamines her life and the possibility that being a bounty hunter is the solution rather than the problem. After disturbingly brief careers at the button factory, Kan Klean Dry Cleaners, and Cluck-in-a-Bucket, Stephanie takes an office position in security, working for Ranger, the sexiest, baddest bounty hunter and businessman on two continents. Tempers and temperatures rise as competition ratchets up between the two men in her life—her on-again, off-again boyfriend, tough Trenton cop Joe Morelli, and her boss, Ranger. Can Stephanie Plum take the heat? Can you?

BOOK REVIEW:

I am still going strong with this series, because I take it the way it is meant to be—well, I think it is meant to be a poolside read.

I’m going to say it…Steph had a moment of growth in this installment.

HALLELUJAH!

I saw her intelligence shine through. She is a quick learner when Ranger and his guys are doing the teaching. She got that computer sorted in no time.

THE WOMAN DOES HAVE SKILLS!

Who knew?

Finally—Janet.

I am gonna say it…Joe does nothing for me.

Blasphemy!

I know. I’m sorry #teamjoe.

It’s not my fault, it’s Janet’s. She writes Steph and Joe’s scenes very wooden. I get nothing, but the surface and some sex. At least with Ranger I get a man who is witty, sexy, sexy-witty combo, he lays his cards on the table, he flirts with smiles. We are interested to see about his past, where he lives. Joe is Joe. He’s a warm blanket.

I still got no clue why Steph is hanging onto Joe—no offence Joe. If you were given more depth of character, then I could work with this, but you aren’t. It is Joe and Bob. Steph and Joe-the-friend-with-benefits. Lawdy I want to love Joe, I want to be torn between him and Ranger as a reader…but I got squat.

I may have another 12 books of this too…eeeep!

In this installment, Janet gets Steph to leave Bounty Hunting behind and try some odd jobs on for size—needless to say none of them work out.

*coughnosurprisestherecough*

Ranger to the RAWRRRR rescue.

Dude gives me a lady-boner.

Lula is Lula.

Grandma Mazur is typical Grandma Mazur.

Did Rex get fed in this one?

Joe is typical Joe…with a leg cast and messing his home with boys-get-togethers.

Cars are blowing up.

Steph is getting filthy.

Ranger is being dreamy Ranger.

Ranger uses the word “Babe” with a smile.

We get to go onto another floor of RangeMan.

Everybody wears black.

There is a mystery to solve, Scooby!

I did like the twist. Nice one, Janet.

Ranger is flirty. Steph is flirty.

We got into the Explorer, and I couldn’t sit with the gun rammed into my pants. “I can’t do this,” I said to Ranger. “This dumb gun is too big. It’s poking me.”

Ranger closed his eyes and rested his forehead against the wheel. “I can’t believe I hired you.”

“Hey, it’s not my fault. You picked out a bad gun.”

“Okay,” he said, swiveling to face me. “Where’s it poking you?”

“It’s poking me in my … you know.”

“No. I don’t know.”

“My pubic area.”

Now when is a gun able to be dumb? Just when Steph was getting that much more intelligent…she talks like a teenager.

Bahahaha.

It simply doesn’t matter. I am hooked. I know almost before I start the next book what the layout will be, but I can’t seem to stop. This series is just silly, and remarkably full of Ranger and Steph flirting and shenanigans.

I wonder if I will tire of the series, eventually? I hope not.

I do love we get to know something more about Ranger. I am surprised it took Steph those few paragraphs to ask. I was like “Steph ask the bloody question”.

Bottom line is: I laugh. I giggle. I'm addicted.

Twelve Sharp is up next.

BOOK REVIEW - WILD MAN by KRISTEN ASHLEY - DREAM MAN # 2 - ADULT CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE - FOREVER

By: Kristen Ashley
Published By:  Forever
Released: Available Now
Details : Kindle, 528 Pages

RATING: 4.25 Brock Stars!

Blurb: Goodreads

She's about to walk on the wild side . . .
While filling the display case in her bakery, the bell over the door sounds and Tessa O'Hara looks up to see the man of her dreams. Within thirty seconds he asks her out for a beer. But after four months of dating, she discovers he's an undercover DEA agent-and he's investigating her possible role in her ex-husband's drug business. For Tess, this means their relationship is over.

Brock disagrees. He's committed to his anti-drug mission, but he's fallen in love with the beautiful woman who's as sweet as her cupcakes-and he'll do anything to win her back. Standing between Tess and Brock are their own exes, one of them a drug lord who's determined to get what he wants. Now as danger threatens, can Brock break the rules he's lived by and let loose his wild side to protect the woman he loves?

BOOK REVIEW:

Alrighty. Another KA book, done and dusted. Gotta say I was a little surprised at how Brock turned out after reading him in Mystery Man and not being overly keen on the lad, then.

Silly me.

Then again, Jake—with his motorcycle boots, his bike, his beat pickup, his old t-shirts that fit way too well, his faded jeans that fit better, his dark brown, longish, unruly hair, his silvery gray eyes that told a million stories without giving away a thing, his capacity to drink beer, down shots, eat hearty, howl at the moon and kiss so hard it was like he knew it was the last moment for every being on earth and he was going to make the most of it—was wild.

Did anybody else notice how long that sentence was?

Eh— who cares. Kristen had me at, ‘motorcycle boots’.

Loved this installment. Tess was a gorgeous character. One of Kristen’s older characters and I kinda forgot she was in her early 40’s—and for that matter—Brock was older.

These two kids, ( hehehe) could bring the smexy and the alpha and all-the-things-KA.

Once he had me settled, arm still firm around me, he said softly, “I am not a normal guy, Tess.”

Amen to that, sister.

Tess is an adorable character, she works hard and has a big heart. Brock is honest in his ways, his past and where he wants to be heading. He is alpha.

Elvira is such a spunky chick in this installment, I totally dig her.

Daisy and Shirleen, ( I love saying Shirleen out loud) make an appearance.

Some of the Hot-Bunch make an appearance…which is always a good thing.

Now, considering Hank was Lee Nightingale’s brother and Lee was Chavez’s best friend and Brock was working with Hector and Vance, two of Lee’s boys, not to mention he’d moved from the DEA to the DPD and paths were crossing, they’d come to an uneasy détente.

This is all I am gonna give you on them showing up. You gotta read the book to find out how Vance blended into the shadows and then revealed himself when he needed to. He was taking his job very seriously.

Onto my next KA adventure...

Getting close to Shyann is the best thing that's ever happened to him, but when his blackouts return, unleashing the truth he's battled so long to hide, he may just lose her forever . . .

BOOK REVIEW:

I am giving this book just over 4 stars, but have to hold myself back from making it a five star read.

I enjoyed Split.

I enjoyed the characters, Lucas and Gage.

I love the cover design because I feel like I am looking at Gage.

I need you to hear me out with my review of Split as in a way I am split.

Go figure.

To tackle the topic dissociative identity disorder in a romance suspense read is very interesting and frightening and other emotions.

Shyann is a great character and I commend her on her ability to outshine what is thrown at her.

The reason I can’t give this a five star read and I so wanted to, was I needed to believe in the plot more.

It needed to be able to stand on its own two feet for me ( personally ), because I am a person who looks deeper than the surface. It is how I read and I can’t help that. I look for strength in plot that appeases me as the reader.

When an author tries to direct ( plants little seeds ) a reader's mind a certain way… red flags go up. I will question why you are doing that, especially when there are XXXX amount of pages still to go in the book.

I couldn’t believe/accept one character was capable of something, even though I kept being told it was so.

Red flag.

I wanted to theorize for myself. I wanted to question the characters in my mind and wonder if I was right.

I feel a really, really good suspense can stand on its own two feet and let the reader try to work it out for themselves… until that all revealing OMG moment, but I need believability too in the equation.

I simply have questions a lot of readers may not have about certain characters and maybe the way something is handled near end. I won’t explain because it will spoil and also some readers will accept everything at face value the author writes, and that is cool.

As a reader, if you are gonna present me with a suspense/psychological thriller, I need it bullet proof, because I am that type of reader. I need stuff explained, even if it is just one sentence. I don’t want things looked over. An example could be therapy.

Man, you don’t go through this kinda shiz and walk away with flowers blooming…life is still young…shiz will take you down later in life in some recurring way. Especially something like what happens in this story.

WHAHHH!

I am trying not to say what is on my mind for fear of spoiling, so I am probably coming across a bit vague. I have my thoughts and I can’t explain them here.

I did enjoy this story, but I don’t like being directed to think a certain way. It feels forced and I know it won’t be true. It’s what I call ‘decoy’ plot. It’s a detour around what really has happened which you can then start to work out for yourself ahead of it actually happening.

Almost all this book I enjoyed, apart from the ‘decoy’ parts and needing a stronger backbone to some outcomes.

Gage is a brilliant character.

Lucas is written very well.

Shyann is working through her own shiz and finding the path she should be on in her life.

I was meant for this. To love the unlovable.

I love the dad and the dynamic there with Shyann and I love her brother Cody.

“How do you do this, Code? How can you stand coming here to this house or even living in this town? Everything reminds me of her.”

“Easy.” He swivels and jerks his head in the direction of the living room. “I do it for him. Whatever we went through, he went through worse. He sheltered us from the worst of it. Nobody sheltered him…”

The twist at the end was brilliant because nothing leads you to suspect. It’s kinda random, albeit I’m not getting true strength and depth to have worked the twist out with the character.

Well done. A twist is a twist in my book and it succeeded, it was well played.

I do recommend this book because Gage and Lucas are very intriguing characters.
