Sixteen-year-old Cara Lange has always been a loner, even more so since she moved away from her best and only friend, Zoe, a few years ago. Cara mostly spends her time avoiding the popular girls who call her 'choker' after a humiliating incident in the cafeteria, and watching Ethan Gray from a distance, wishing he would finally notice her.
Then one day Cara comes home and finds Zoe waiting for her. Zoe's on the run from problems at home, and Cara agrees to help her hide. With Zoe back, Cara's life changes overnight. Zoe gives her a new look and new confidence, and before she can blink, Cara is flirting with Ethan and getting invited to parties. And best of all, she has her best friend to confide in again.
But just as quickly as Cara's life came together, it starts to unravel. A girl goes missing in her town, and everyone is a suspect ~ including Ethan. Worse still, Zoe starts behaving very strangely, and Cara begins to wonder what exactly her friend does all day when she's at school. You're supposed to be able to trust your best friend no matter what, but what if she turns into a total stranger?
BOOK REVIEW:
I know, I am going to use the word ‘CREEPY’, yes..yes.....I could get the thesaurus out and look up another word, but I’m not going to. This story has awesome creepiness that clings to you.
Oh hush, these book covers do not give you any indication what you are in for. Like blimey a pink cover or the cover with Cara on the front.
Seriously!! Creepy, creepy and a little wrong in parts..ha! Which doesn’t make for a bad book, it actually was a real page turner.
I really enjoyed this lunch sized novel. I did, reasonably early into the story have about four theories in my head, one kind of stuck pretty strongly and I was right. But that’s not to say that others will pick up on what the story would eventually reveal.
I think Mr. Tim O’Rourke’s writing has taught my brain to really think differently, he is the master of deceit, so I couldn’t help doing brain gymnastics with this story. There were a couple little side order things I didn’t pick up on and I love a title to a book that means something to the story.
I am completely overriding for my review rating, that I worked out the plot, as the book was really well written and made me ‘feel’ quite tense the whole time. I was hoping I was wrong as I was thinking how sad it would be if I was right. I didn’t want to be right, darn it!
I did have a chuckle and Elizabeth had me reaching for Goodreads to see if she was an Australian author ( no she is not) because she wrote about an orange newsreader.....hehe!!! We have one of those on our television news . Like the girl is orange, not that there is anything wrong with that, no offence meant. I am a real white skin...so you know we all could do with a tan.
This appears a stand alone book and I have already written to the publisher putting my 2c in for a plot thought for a second book . I know, presumptuous of me, but I could not help seeing a direction this story could take. This would make me suck up my theory big time and spin all the readers who maybe did work out the direction the story was going and pull a ‘nah..na..nah.na.nahhhh’ at all of us...or not..hehe!!! I am just a housewife blogger, what do I know.
One particular chappy I felt sorry for, and I really love his character and want to read more about him. So, maybe this is my way of getting more Ethan * waggles eyebrows*.
Cara’s character could be misconstrued to be a tad annoying with how easily she lets Zoe dictate to her. But you have to read the whole book. A friendship like they have , there is always a leader and a follower. A weaker and a stronger person in the relationship.
Visually I really saw every scene really clearly. It was almost like watching a little movie in my head, especially, some of the extra creeptastic scenes. Like yowzer!!
I recommend this book for those that like some extra creepiness with a strawberry on top....mwah...ha....ha.....haaaaaa!!!

Awesome and creepy? Sounds good. :) I have a taste for creepy books. And I like that it's a stand-alone, I'm reading already too many series.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the funny review!
Hey Cayce,
DeleteThanks for dropping by. I shall visit everybodys pages later, I have a day out with my friend today doing all things girlie so I must get my act together shortly, once I ship the kidlets out the door. (7.57am)
Yes, Cayce, very creepy like 6 times creepy..hehe!! Goodreads isn't showing a very high rating, but I want everybody to ignore that and read this puppy all the way through as Yowzer!!
Michelle
Ooh you know what? I LOVE creepy! I haven't heard of this book before either It def. sounds like one I would like! Great review!!
ReplyDeleteHehe!! Giselle , I have read your profile , I actually thought of you when reading this book. I was like....hmmmm, I wonder what Giselle would think of this book?
DeleteMIchelle:D
Brain gymnastics huh, who would've have thought this book would have that just by looking at the cover. At first I thought it's another bubble gum coming of age story but since you mentioned CREEP 6 times (i actually counted) it does put a different spin on the story.
ReplyDeleteP.S. looking forward to your Gwen Sparks blog tour. :)
Braine my darling, that is so funny you counted my creepy's.....I did have to mention the pink cover cause, dude, seriously that cover is not giving any indication in a looooooonnnnggggg shot of what is inside those pages...mwah..ha..ha..haaaaaaa! * wink*
DeleteI want everybody to read this book as it's only a wee novel. I wanna get onto Grave Mercy but it's sheer size is scaring me....hehe!! Over 540 pages....but I wanna read that brick. How did I get onto Grave Mercy??? hehe!!

I keep seeing this book on blogs and it definitely sounds different to most of the YA available now!

I LOVE THE CREEPY. So okay, I have a fascination with creepy things. I like the icky feeling you get from books that make you shudder. Is something wrong with me? haha. I love that this one you had you going through a number of different theories (though you did get it right in the end, woo!). I have this for review aswell, just need to find the time to squeeze it in. Seems like a short, intense read though, so I can't wait!! Awesome review!
ReplyDeleteYou will definitely wanna close your eyes in one part, you know it's inevitable but.....icky!!
DeleteYou definitely feel a tad creeped out with this one..ha!
Whoaa.. CREEPY? I FREAKING LOVE CREEPY STORIES <3333 Heheee When I saw this on goodreads, it didn't seem like a magnificent read, so I put off reading this, BUT LOOKS LIKE I WAS CLEARLY WRONG! THIS SOUNDS SOOO AMAZING <333 Thank you for the awesome review, Michelle! I'll definitely be reading this one soon :DD
ReplyDeleteShirley,
ReplyDeleteYou can be the one I am daft to, just whisper so nobody else hears, what does <3 mean. I get them in comments and I pretend to know what it means...hehe!! You are very happy with your <3333 and I am like, I am going to have to ask..ha!
Apparently some peeps have thought a little too creepy this read, I have on good authority, but ...well it wouldn't be the book it is if it wasn't as creepy as it is. I think you either go not creepy or all the way creepy if you are gonna go creepy and Elizabeth goes all the way creepy, YA style of course, but even then......
