INTERVIEW: JACLYN MORIARTY - Author of A CORNER OF WHITE

AUTHOR INTERVIEW
JACLYN MORIARTY

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Jaclyn Moriarty on the release of her new book A Corner of White (Book One: The Colours of Madeleine). A Corner of White is the new YA fantasy novel from Jaclyn and is the first in a series of three. It’s humorous, odd, different and above all – entertaining. My review is HERE!

Firstly, congratulations Jaclyn on the release of A Corner of White. For me it has been one of this year’s most quirky and highly entertaining reads!

Thank you so much!

Reading through your website I was pleased to find listed amongst your favorite music, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and David Byrne! What songs/bands do you associate with A Corner of White as whole or for individual characters?

It sounds like you have good taste in music.  Nice.  For Madeleine, I listened to Arcade Fire, the National or Fanfarlo.  And before I wrote Elliot scenes, I played Beck, Cherry Ghost and, most often, a Vampire Weekend song called Ottoman, from the soundtrack of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.

Every now and then I listened to different versions of Bach’s Cello Suites, because it seemed the right thing for the Kingdom of Cello.

To be honest, when I read the first two parts of A Corner of White, I had the voice of Will from The Inbetweeners in my head (male and female sounding versions)! I know – a tad different – but combined with your talented and humorous writing, I was well and truly hooked! I guess this added to the uniqueness of the story! To you personally, do any of the characters have a unique voice or characteristic that can be associated with persons in film, TV or real life?

Will from the Inbetweeners.  You are funny.  (So is he.  I wonder if he’ll write the next book for me.)  The characters are mostly from my own head, although Elliot was sort of inspired by a beautiful boy I had a crush on when I was a teenager.  I remember we were sitting next to each other on a bus one day and he was really tired.  ‘Is it ok if I do this?’ he said, and he rested his head on my shoulder.  Was it ok?!  Was he kidding?!  But right away he sat back up and said, kindly and apologetically: ‘You have a bony shoulder.’
I’ve never forgiven my shoulder.

Do you have a big release party scheduled? Or is it business as usual – being it’s a school night and all!!?

Well, Tuesdays I have my cello lesson, but then I’m going to have pizza and champagne with the friends who look after my little boy while I’m at the lesson.  As A Corner of White is the first book in a trilogy, I’m planning to have a party to celebrate its release, but I haven’t organised that yet.  And now the book has been released.  So I hope it’s okay to launch a ship that has already sailed.

In the Kingdom of Cello, a colour can come in waves and wreak emotional havoc….a colour can even be aggressive and kill or take hostages!! Does the Kingdom have a handy info sheet that visitors from The World can read and gain important knowledge of what the colours do? If so, can we have a copy….you know….in case we find ourselves a crack big enough to slip in!!

Good question.  I have a twenty-page table that lists different colours and the form and effect that they take.   If you contact the Kingdom of Cello Tourism Board I’m sure they will pop a copy in the mail for you.

A Corner of White has a stellar cast of interesting, quirky and very enjoyable characters. Who were your top two characters to write into the story and why?

I had a lot of fun writing the Princess sisters’ column and the Twickleham family.  But I also like the Sheriff.

Thanks heaps for taking the time to answer the questions. Congratulations on what will no doubt be another successful book.

Thank you, for being so kind and for asking great questions.

A CORNER OF WHITE
Book One: The Colours of Madeleine
Publisher: Pan MacMillan Australia

She knew this.
That philematology is the science of kissing.
That Samuel Langhorne Clemens is better
known as Mark Twain.
That, originally, gold comes from the stars.

Madeleine Tully lives in Cambridge, England, the World – a city of spires, Isaac Newton and Auntie's Tea Shop.
Elliot Baranski lives in Bonfire, the Farms, the Kingdom of Cello – where seasons roam, the Butterfly Child sleeps in a glass jar, and bells warn of attacks from dangerous Colours.
They are worlds apart – until a crack opens up between them; a corner of white – the slim seam
of a letter.

Elliot begins to write to Madeleine, the Girl-in-the-World – a most dangerous thing to do for suspected cracks must be reported and closed. But Elliot's father has disappeared and Madeleine's mother is sick.
Can a stranger from another world help to unravel the mysteries in your own? Can Madeleine and Elliot find the missing pieces of themselves before it is too late?
A mesmerising story of two worlds; the cracks between them, the science that binds them and the colours that infuse them.

ENJOY!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW & GIVEAWAY: DANIEL H. WILSON (Amped & Robopocalypse)

INTERVIEW WITH DANIEL H. WILSON
+ 3 COPIES OF "AMPED" TO GIVEAWAY

Today on the blog I’d like to welcome acclaimed author and Roboticist, Daniel H Wilson.  Daniel has written numerous non-fiction and fiction books with robotics as the common theme – his most recent release is AMPED – check out my review here! Welcome Daniel…..

Hello!

Other than the book blurb…..can you please give our followers your take on what  AMPED is about?

Amped is a technothriller set in a near future when technology is turning people with disabilities into people with superabilities. As the larger populace realizes that soon everyone will need a neural implant to compete, some people begin to try and legislate away the existence of these implants (and the people who have them). A civil rights movement (slash civil war) is sparked, and people with implants, "amps," end up fighting for their lives.

My personal view when it comes to fiction books and movies, is that there is an element of truth, no matter how farfetched it seems to begin with……for scientific, medical and military breakthrough’s – someone had to have a farfetched or impossible sounding idea first!!

The crazy thing is that none of the technology in AMPED is far-fetched. Consulting with neuroscientists, I found that neural implants in the novel, such as the "Neural Autofocus" that lets kids concentrate, already exist and are in use in a variety of forms. It is great fun to inform people of the fact that hundreds of thousands of people are walking around with brain implants and watch their faces.

Having the knowledge you do in robotics, how much (and what) of your fiction writing could in fact be the next advancement in reality?  Could we in fact see implants becoming a reality?!

Ah, see previous question. :)

“Daniel H. Wilson
 Robopocalypse
Steven Speilberg”
Did it ever occur to you when writing that the three names above would be linked for a movie/project?  What sort of impact has this movie deal had on your life?

The Robopocalypse movie is good news with the kind of magnitude that makes me suspect I'm asleep and dreaming, or the victim of an elaborate prank. The movie isn't filmed yet, so I have to try and remain skeptical of it... until that giant wakes up. Payment for the book rights has already put me (and my rapidly growing family) in a larger house, so who says robots never did anything nice for anybody?

I read that whilst obtaining your BS in Computer Science, you spent a semester studying at the University of Melbourne, Australia.  What made you head on Down Under?  How different did you find Uni life in Australia to the US?

Australia is such an exotic place from the perspective of a nineteen-year-old kid in Oklahoma, and studying abroad there was like a test for myself -- can I really go to the other side of the planet by myself? I studied only philosophy while I was there and had the time of my life. Realizing that there is only one test at the end of the semester, and that it counted for 100% of the grade, was exhilirating at first (no homework!) and then terrifying (should have done homework!).

Out of your non-fiction books, my son has begged me to let him read A Boy and His Bot….whilst my husband thinks Bro-Jitsu – The Martial Art of Sibling Rivalry should be a classic handbook in any household (just like Raising Boys and What To Expect You’re Expecting!).  What has been your most enjoyable and favourite book to write?

Every book that I am currently writing is my favorite book to write. This is probably because you become a little bit better at writing every day, and therefore a little more embarrassed of whatever you did yesterday. I'm not a good enough writer yet to be embarrassed about what I wrote this morning. Thank goodness for the little things.

An initial character in Amped, Samantha Blex departed very early but has received quite a lot of interest from readers.  She has a story – and we’d love to read it!  Samantha has her own Facebook page and hopefully soon a prequel to Amped based on her.

When are we likely to expect something from Samantha?  And can you give us a little bit of her story?

Samantha is an implanted teenager who is a catalyst for everything that happens in the book. In the weeks before Amped was released, I thought it would be fun to hire a writer to create a blog told from Samantha's perspective. I found an MFA student here in Portland, Oregon (named Chelsea Bieker) and she wrote an amazingly deep account of Samantha's days leading up to the first page of the novel. It was wild to really get to know a character that I wrote in a whole new way, from the perspective of another writer. You can read about Samantha Blex at www.facebook.com/SamanthaBlex

And finally, what can we expect from Daniel H. Wilson in the future?

I am hard at work writing Robogenesis, the sequel to Robopocalypse. I'm not giving away any details yet, but my research beyond robotics involves reading Japanese fairy tales, oral accounts of the narco wars in Mexico, and about the lives of child soldiers in Africa.

Thanks Daniel for taking time to answer some questions. Enjoy the awesome ride that you are on with the success of your books.

INTERVIEW WITH BRODI ASHTON & COLE FROM EVERNEATH

Interview with
BRODI ASHTON
author of

Today on the blog I have the pleasure of interviewing not just a wonderful debut author, but the sinister (yet sexy!) lead villain in the newly released novel EVERNEATH.  That’s right folks, Brodi Ashton and the conniving (yet alluring) Cole have joined us today and will answer a couple of questions.

Firstly, congratulations Brodi on such an awesome debut novel.  Praises and rave reviews are everywhere on the web!

-Thank you so much!

  1. How does it feel to be in such demand and to know that you created something that so many are enjoying?

- It feels surreal that something that started out in a little room - with just me and my computer - is now being read around the world. It’s amazing. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over getting emails from readers who connected with the story.

  1. So now that Everneath is out…..how long are the masses going to have to wait for book 2?  Any chance you can slide in a sneak peak here to keep them even more at their wits end??!!!

- I’m just finishing up on revisions for book 2 right now, but since it doesn’t come out until January of 2013, I can’t say much. But what I can say is: If you’ve read the first book in its entirety, you’ll have a good idea of what needs to happen in book 2!

  1. I checked out your blog post detailing your launch party (Brodi Ashton's Launch Party by Numbers). WOW! What a turnout!  You’d have to be pleased with such an awesome response.  Was it a little overwhelming standing up their knowing that you and your creation were the ONLY reason for that many people to be there?

- Very overwhelming! Everyone was so supportive. But it helped to have the Power Point presentation there, so I could give them something else to focus on besides my chubby cheeks.

  1. Now your road to publication may be vastly different, or even at times similar to many debut authors…..what are some moments that were total StandOut awesome moments for you during your journey?

- EVERNEATH wasn’t my first book. I wrote another book that didn’t sell. When I showed my agent-at-the-time the first draft of EVERNEATH, he didn’t like it. Eventually, I split up with him because of it, and I thought that might be the end for me. But when I started querying again with EVERNEATH, I ended up with ten offers of representation. That was absolutely a defining moment, and let me know I had something special.

  1. Now not to leave Cole sitting there any longer….you’d think he has somewhere to be!!  Welcome Cole to Novels On The Run and thanks for taking time out of your day to chat with us.  You do kind of look pretty nice draped over the arm of that hotel couch! Hmmmmmm…..oops sorry!! Where was I?....

-It’s okay. People often lose their train of thought when they look at me. It happens.

  1. The Dead Elvises….great band name.  What a great front to allure the emotionally needy fans so you can strip their emotions and get “high”.  Is this the real or only reason for creating the band? Or do you and the other guys actually have a passion for music?

- I live for music, and so do the guys in the band. It’s why we all came together. We just merged our passion for music with our immortal lifestyles as well. We get to live our dream, and we never run out of nourishment.

  1. What song would sum up The Dead Elvises? What would be the bands’ anthem song?

- I would say “Ulysses” by Franz Ferdinand. It’s all about taking that first trip, and then never going home again.

  1. Is there any style of music or particular artist that you just put your down and refuse to play?

- We don’t touch Celine Dion. And Reggae is for pansies.

  1. Where can we get the guitar picks???  They “Rock”!!

- As with many things in life, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time.

  1. Cole…clearly your time during the Feed with Nikki was pretty intense and even intimate..being entwined with her for so long.  The overwhelming need you find yourself feeling for her since you left the Everneath, could that be love?  Or just purely a side effect of the feed?

-If I’m not going to be straight with Nikki about my feelings, it wouldn’t be very crafty of me to spill the beans on your blog…  But the fact is, it doesn’t matter what I say about love. Until the object of my love believes I’m actually capable of it, my feelings will go unrequited.

  1. Cole, can you describe your own memory (emotional and physical) that you went through during the Feed?

-        The Feed is a very intimate, and personal thing for an Everliving. It is the moment we face the meaning of our lives. We stare down the fragility of our own existence, the cost of our immortality, and we renew our pledge to this life we have chosen.
-        At least, that’s what we are supposed to think about. During this particular Feed, all I could think about was the girl in my arms.

Well I am sure you both have plenty of places to go and things to do….so again, thanks so much for chatting with us.

- Thank you for having us!!

I hope you all enjoyed those few questions.  If you haven't read EVERNEATH yet, add it to your TBR list and grab a copy.  To find out more about Everneath check out my review HERE.

Also take the time to check out Brodi's own blog - Brodi Ashton

FATED by Sarah Alderson AUSTRALIAN BLOG TOUR

Welcome again Sarah to Novels On The Run.  Thanks for taking time to answer my questions and hopefully have a little fun on the way!

Today we are the second stop over for the Sarah Alderson – Fated Blog Tour…..WOOT HOO!  Todays interview theme is Choosing Your Own Fate.  Now for those that have read FAQ’s on Sarah, you will know that there is probably not much in her life that she would need to change….well not if I was her!

Many of us grow through childhood wanting to be one thing and turning out to be something else. Was there a career path or family legacy that was expected of you to follow or that was prominent within your family? If so, did you follow in that direction at any stage?

No, my parents never pushed me towards one thing or another, they've always let my brother and I follow our hearts. But I went to the kind of school which didn't provide much in the way of inspiration or ideas beyond becoming a lawyer or doctor. For a while I thought I would become a lawyer but then after university I temped in the private sector and utterly loathed it. I got fired by Accenture (probably the best thing that ever happened to me) and then I decided I needed to work in the non profit sector. It fit my values a lot more. I worked in that sector for 9 years - it was so creative and fun and filled with passionate people all wanting to make the world a better place - I loved it.

Do you feel you were “fated” to be an author?

It never even crossed my mind to be a writer. And then one day BAM. Just like that the idea came to me and I just knew, once I started, that I could never stop and that I could never do anything else again and be as happy. It's my passion. It's not a job. It's not even work. I love it. And I realise how lucky I am to have discovered that. But I do think that having lived a fair bit and travelled and experienced lots of different jobs makes me a better writer now. I don't think I would have been so good ten years ago. It came at the right time. Is that fate? I think so.

In FATED, Evie is the last in a long line of demon slayers…… she can’t change that fact…..but she can change how she uses this. Do you personally believe that everyone has a distinct fate already mapped out?  Is it just a matter of deciding how your fate will play out even if the outcome is the same?

This is how I imagine it is; we're all sticks on a river and fate's trying to pull us down a particular stream, but sometimes we pull against the current and sometimes we sit and hang out in little cove doing nothing, maybe because we're scared of the rapids up ahead. Other times we take the route that other people pull us down because it looks like that's the path we should be on too or because someone (teachers, parents, friends) tell us it's the only way to go. So we have choice in our lives for sure. But if we sticks listen to our instincts and trust them then we'll end up on the right course, and we'll arrive at the place we're meant to be and life will ROCK! that's my experience anyway. You need courage and commitment to take that path though. That's the deal. (Did you like my little analogy? Deepak Chopra move over right?)

Now, I thought we could take the interview to a relatively simple (yet I hope fun!) level!!
When I was asked to do a Choose Your Own Fate themed interview, what instantly came to mind was the old Choose Your Own Adventure tales.  So I would love it if you could choose answers to the following questions……which will give us a quirky little short story at the end!!

Fate has decided the following for you:
           a)      You’re the only one who can save mankind
          b)      You are destined to be with one individual but desire another
           c)      All alone with your cats for company!
          d)      You live a long and uneventful life
          e)      After losing your parents in a house fire, your dog being hit by a car, your best friend having an affair  with your boyfriend, the small town gossip following you everywhere……

     Sarah’s Answer =   a and e) cos that makes a good story ;)

You decided to sell all your worldly possessions and move to:
           a)      A cabin nestled in the trees around Lake Tahoe
           b)      A villa looking out over the sun drenched beaches of Western Australia
           c)      A cave house built into the cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea
           d)      Take refuge and solace in Deception Valley (Kalahari Desert)
           e)      Travel back in time to be a senior in high school and have a rocking awesome time!!

Sarah’s Answer  =  b - My next move is going to be to somewhere close to the ocean

What is your special skill/ability/paranormal affliction!:
           a)      Just plain normal human
           b)      Shape Shifter
           c)      Super speed
          d)      Telekinetic
          e)      X-ray vision
          f)       Energy Conductor
         g)      High school cheerleader with lethal pom poms!
         h)      See the future

Sarah’s Answer  =  Shapeshifter who is also telekinetic.

         Love……..
          a)      Just the two of us no decisions required
         b)      Triangle
         c)      Square – I like lots of choices!!
         d)      No thanks too busy saving the world!
         e)      Just me and my cats thanks!

Sarah’s Answer  =  can it be 8-sided? (with all my male characters please!)

        Money…..
        a)      Grows on trees in my backyard!
        b)      Barter systems rock!
         c)      Would love it…..just don’t have it
        d)      Average wage for a normal days work
     e)    Super heroes have no need for money! (We get TV endorsements and book deals!)

Sarah’s Answer = Barter systems rock!

You decide to change fate by doing this:
         a)      Place a “wanted” ad in the paper for more “super heroes” to join forces
         b)      Move to another destination and try again
          c)      Get rid of your cats and try internet dating
         d)      Write up your ultimate bucket list and live life on the edge!

Sarah’s Answer  =  b) because I love to travel and d) cos I've done that too

So to sum up we know this of fictional Sarah Alderson……….

After losing her parents in a house fire, her dog being hit by a car, her best friend having an affair with her boyfriend and the small town gossip following her everywhere (stalkers are so annoying!), Sarah admits to being the only one who can save mankind – geez, much pressure?!
Sarah is a telekinetic shapeshifter who just needs a long holiday and break from reality.  So she packs up, sells her belongings and moves to a villa looking out over the sun drenched beaches of Western Australia with her 8 men in her love octagon – choices are a good thing!
Living in an “alternative” village, Sarah and her man candy live off the land and barter their wares for the staples of life – wine, cheese and French sticks!
After living it up and still finding no meaning to her life, Sarah writes her bucket list for life, leaves the lads and the beach behind her in search of another destination and another new beginning.
Where she goes, is anyones guess.  What she looks like when gets there will also be a mystery. At least she won’t have to physically carry her own bags around!

THANKS SO MUCH SARAH FOR INCLUDING NOVELS ON THE RUN IN YOUR FATED BLOG TOUR!

FATED by Sarah Alderson is a fantastic read.  I urge you all to get your hands on a copy and read, read, read!

ENJOY!
