BOOK REVIEW- SOLID by SHELLEY WORKINGER

Released : Available Now

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

Teens who discover they were secretly genetically altered before birth are brought together at a classified site where they forge new friendships, find love, develop "super-abilities," and even unearth a conspiracy.

BOOK REVIEW:

This was a nice easy, YA read. The prologue gave me an insight into the book, with a bit of secrecy. I was hoping to read more through the book, but that secrecy didn’t develop into part of the story. I wanted to know more about the secret hatch that dropped down into a room with caged occupants.

CHARACTERS:

Calliope Kaid ( cal-ee-oh-pay) female lead.

Jack the juggling fruit hottie.

Bliss beautiful girl who quickly becomes Clio’s ( Calliope) good friend.

Garrett and his dialogue were amusing.

Miranda - slightly sarcastic , daughter of Paula Campbell, 2 Star Major General .

I enjoyed a certain chapter which included a quilt and constellations and Jack. It was my favourite scene. I personally felt it lacked in some character depth and was a little slow paced at times. I would be interested to read book 2 to see where it all ended up as I think book 2 titled ‘Settling’ , is where the action will take place and relationships will blossom and we will find out about the secrecy from the prologue.  It was a nice little read with a lot of potential for book 2.

Garrett was the character that made me laugh. His dialogue was at times quite funny. I probably knew the most about his character through his dialogue. I wanted to know more about Jack.

I thank Shelley Workinger for giving Marissa and I each a copy of her book for review. I will be placing my  SIGNED copy up as a giveaway shortly as originally discussed with Shelley. I wish Shelley all the best with her series and would quite like to read more about Garrett.

FAVE QUOTES:

“And I think you two rolling in spaghetti would be hot.” Pervy , but funny – he (Garrett) could grow on me.

Garrett offered me a handful of Lucky Charms, saying, “Don’t worry ; I got your back.”

Actually , my favourite cereal, but not so appetizing from a hand-bowl. “Are you gonna blow me some milk out of your nose , too?” I asked.

“Ah,” Garrett stretched his arms so far over his head that his shirt pulled out of his waistband, revealing the bottom two cans of the six-pack that I was pretty sure he showed off proudly and often.

She was barely out the door when Bliss said, “Do you think she’ll do her fantabulous fanny-shaking near us or in a circle of boys?”

“Did you wash that?” Miranda disdainfully eyeballed the banana Garrett was peeling.

To get off what? Monkey pee?” he retorted, biting off a huge chunk just to goad her.

“Well , we know there’s video,” Garrett reminded us. “Guess the old dude likes to get his rocks off in the comfort of his own digs.” He finished with a little bow-chik-a-bow-wow beatbox tribute to vintage adult cinema.

The one-eighty flip from the instructor now was almost dizzying. Waving her gun around, she was obsessed, possessed , all sessed-out.

REVIEW:

A big thank you to Shelley Workinger for sending a copy (signed thank you very much!!) of her novel Solid.  When I read the description on Goodreads I wasn't really sure what to make of the story (as you can read from the above description).....but I gave it shot and very glad that I did.

Clio Kaid is our leading gal in this story. She has found out that she was genetically modified before birth and heads off to an Army camp with about 100 other teens to try and unearth and develop their skills. She's not to sure what to make of everything and is convinced that she has no ability at all.

Jack is Clio's love interest. He is also one of the modified teenagers. There is something more to him that I hope to find out about in "Settling". His character is very likeable (as is Clio's).

All the characters that Shelley has introduced us to are great. Their relationships and interactions with each other seem very normal and quite in-tune with your everyday teenager - just with the added advantage of a few special abilities.  Nothing seems "forced" in the story though a little more depth could have been achieved. The romance with Jack and Clio is sweet.  Garrett's macho sports-mindedness is great to read and quite humorous.

I look forward to reading Settling (Solid #2) on it's release.

Thanks again Shelley - I really enjoyed reading Solid !

ENJOY!
