BLOG TOUR - BOOK REVIEW - QUINTESSENTIALLY Q by PEPPER WINTERS - MONSTER IN THE DARK # 2 - SELF PUBLISHED - DARK ROMANCE - 7 %$#$*$ DARK STARS!!

By: Pepper Winters
Published By: Pepper Winters
Released : Available Now
Details: Digital for review, 330 Pages

RATING: 7 #&%$&$^ DARK STARS!!

Blurb: Goodreads

“All my life, I battled with the knowledge I was twisted… fucked up to want something so deliciously dark—wrong on so many levels. But then slave fifty-eight entered my world. Hissing, fighting, with a core of iron, she showed me an existence where two wrongs make a right."

Tess is Q’s completely. Q is Tess’s irrevocably. But now, they must learn the boundaries of their unconventional relationship, while Tess seeks vengeance on the men who sold her. Q made a blood-oath to deliver their corpses at Tess’s feet, and that’s just what he’ll do.

He may be a monster, but he’s Tess’s monster.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Man, can Pepper Winters write.

When Pepper writes a dark romance she does not hold back. She is a very honest writer with what she wants to express to the reader. She goes places few can emulate because she is so honest and open with her writing.

She will go ...there!

Pepper delivers.

Pepper lets Q’s beast roam wild.

Holy hell does he roam wild!

Q is dark.

Q has extremely dark desires.

Q is darker than dark.

Q is $^*&%*&#$*#  dark, that is how dark he is.

Q is like no other male character I have read to date.

Q is fierce with his love for Tess.

Q is a contradiction to his cause.

Q is dangerous.

Q can freak me out.

Wow! WoW!

...And WOW!!

It is very hard to put into words Pepper’s writing. She blew me out of the blogosphere with Quincy and his Tess.

A complete contradiction - a man with two desires.

She had me peeping through my fingers.

Q has found the one that completes him.

I captured her mouth like she was the last woman on earth. The only woman for me.

I may be a controlling bastard, but the moment Tess stalked into my life I lost my balls to her.

His perfect monster in his very dark life.

And I lived in a constant battleground, fighting the delicious satisfaction at her pain against my morality and horror at hurting her.

Q can at times be a challenge to understand and watch. He has dark needs, he has a need to inflict pain. He has a need for blood.

He must release his beast.

But, he has found someone willing to consent to his desires, willing to take part, willing to receive pain.

“You’re wrong to think your box of horrors scares me. It doesn’t."

Two monsters in the dark.

Tess stood before me. Her toned legs splayed, hands on her hips. So proud and regal in her own body. I couldn’t tear my eyes away. The beast inside prowled and hurled itself against the cage, trying so hard to get at her.

Q was all my nightmares, fantasies, and needs rolled into one bestial package. He was my drug of choice and I’d been craving him for four long days.

These two characters are very passionate in their own way.

...“You’re my wings. You made me fly.”

“I’ll never be free of your force.”

No other man had a voice like Q. Dark, dangerous, laced with a melodic French accent. Being reprimanded by him was pure audio perfection.

This is not a story that is all about Q's dark desires. This is also a story about revenge. A story about two broken people coming together.

Fighting to keep their sanity.

Fighting back.

When Q is in warrior form, he is unstoppable .

He is a law unto his own.

All I thought about was blood.

I dropped my eyes and let myself be free. I smashed through my walls, unlocked the cage, and snarled like the rabid animal I was. The false me ceased to exist. The real me was ready.

I really like Frederick and Franco. The two men Q trusts. Franco is more like Q. Both are explicitly loyal to Q.

I have so many quotes I noted down when reading this book. Pepper’s books are full of quotes. I have a thing about quotes. To me it is a great part of writing an awesome story.

I got to say whatever floats your boat, but Q is painfully extreme with his desires. Being inside Q’s head for part of this book is brilliant because we can see his mind ticking over and his voice is quite amazing to listen to.

I swallowed back the thick taste of lust and murmured, “Too fucking late, esclave. I’m ruined beyond redemption.” In the last moment of gentleness, I pressed my forehead against hers and breathed deep. “I’m lost.” Then the gentleness left, abandoning me to the hard-edged need to hurt.

Tess knows what she needs to do to find another side to Q, but will she be given a chance to do it her way?

Some basic part of me, the unthinking but all-sensing part, knew I had to break Q completely before he could embrace the softer side of what we could have.

Q was born into darkness, created by circumstances he wouldn’t share with me, but if anyone of us was damaged, it was him. I wanted him to no longer fear himself. He no longer had to be alone.

Pepper writes Q perfectly. When he talks we sit up and take notice. He is hard to ignore. You won’t find your mind wandering when Q is talking. His inner monologue is showing us how much of him is the beast.

I liked her on top, but I didn’t like her holding me as if she was in control. It wasn’t how I worked.

Pepper is graphic with her writing and that is what makes her writing very honest. She is not bringing us a half baked tale. She lays all her cards on the table when it comes to the violence of trafficking and what Tess is put through.

This type of story could not work without an author being brutally honest and brutally graphic in their writing.

I am not into reading a lot of dark romances but it is a pleasure to read Pepper.

Q may not be a character who is for everyone of mature age, but I highly recommend this series as it is quite a spectacular read.

Unapologetically dark!

I can't leave out the birds. Pepper has again brought the significance of the birds beautifully into the story.

On a lighter note, there is a wonderful scene with Q and his birds, but dang, I could not help thinking there would be a shiz load of bird poop.

Ha!

Tears of Tess was the entree, Quintessentially Q the main course. I am not sure how Pepper is going to top these two books, but I am sure she will.

I have to give credit where credit is due and Pepper knows how to write.

Q will leap off the page and land on you.

He demands attention.

One talented, exciting Australian author that I will keep coming back for more.

No questions.

Done deal.

“I’m the man who knows right from wrong.”

By: Vanessa Garden
Published By : Harlequin Teen
Release Date : 1st January 2014
Details: ARC Review, Paperback from Publisher for honest review, 291 Pages

RATING: 3.25 MARKO & ROBBIE STARS

Blurb: Goodreads

In a glittering underwater world, nothing is as it seems...

For the past twelve months since her parents’ death, seventeen-year-old Miranda Sun has harboured a dark secret — a secret that has strained the close relationship she once shared with her older sister, Lauren. In an effort to repair this broken bond, Miranda’s grandparents whisk the siblings away on a secluded beach holiday. Except before Miranda gets a chance to confess her life-changing secret, she’s dragged underwater by a mysterious stranger while taking a midnight swim.

Awakening days later, Miranda discovers that she’s being held captive in a glittering underwater city by an arrogant young man named Marko...the King of this underwater civilization.

Nineteen-year-old Marko intends to marry Miranda in order to keep his crown from falling into the sinister clutches of his half-brother, Damir. There’s only one problem. Miranda is desperate to return home to right things with her sister and she wants nothing to do with Marko. Trying to secure her freedom, Miranda quickly forms an alliance with Robbie — Marko’s personal guard. However, she soon discovers that even underwater, people are hiding dangerous secrets...

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Debut Australian author Vanessa Garden and Harlequin Teen are releasing Captivate in January 2014. This was a good start to her Submerged Sun series.

The cover is absolutely beautiful.

My thoughts on this book are just my one personal opinion. I have been asked to give an honest review and I shall be submitting an honest review.

I really loved Vanessa’s idea about an underworld city of humans.

Frano Tollin a deep sea explorer came across this empty city on the bottom of the ocean, three generations ago. He convinced many to follow him from all walks of life and nationalities and so begins a city of humans living undetected on the bottom of the ocean away from the threat of war.

Sylvia snorted. “My grandfather was an intelligent and powerful man, with lots of money behind him. He was also highly secretive and incredibly discreet. All who chose to join him down here knew that they’d be punished if they were to jeopardize his new world. "

We do learn more about what this city may have been.

But not much.

Marko is the King of Marin, the underwater city and the grandson of Frano. He needs his people to live on so he needs to find a fertile woman to marry and breed with. Robbie his childhood friend has been sent to the surface to steal a female who can essentially be Marko’s breeder. Marko has another reason why he needs an heir so time is of the essence.

Miranda is having a late night swim with her sister and Robbie captures her and drugs her. Miranda is not quite seventeen so she is a little young for what Marko has in store for her. She isn’t thinking of children. She is thinking of sorting out the mess her relationship with her older sister Lauren has become after the death twelve months prior of both their parents. They need to air some dirty laundry.

But will they get a chance?

I have to say, I did not understand the drugging, but that is ok. I thought it was to prepare her body for where she was going, but no. She was knocked out for nearly a week.

King Marko is only nineteen years old and Robbie is seventeen. Robbie is Marko’s faithful bodyguard and what I can gather the only person close enough to being called a doctor in the city. I did wonder who was delivering all those children and attending medical needs before Robbie came along. I did scratch my head in wonder at there not being an actual qualified doctor or medical team in this city. Robbie appeared to be it. I gather he was putting on his catching mitt for when King Marko’s bride gave birth.

Good luck with that one Robbie.

I really like Robbie’s character. He was one of the stand out characters for me in this story. He is the meat in the sandwich. He knows Miranda has been wronged, and he knows he was following orders, but it was wrong to just take a female against her will and assume she would play happy housewife and pop babes out. He also has great loyalty to Marko and he has proven this.

Robbie sighed. “No babies have been born in Marin for over eighteen years. That’s why I brought you here. Sylvia ordered me to.”

He spat out the last sentence as though he despised my situation as much as I did, and finally met my eyes.

“You’re here to help Marko - just Marko - sire an heir.”

Miranda is threatened a lot with the Colosseum. This is a place you don’t want to wind up. These humans have sharks in it and when you have been naughty...in you go...death by sharks.

Nasty!

I have to admit. I wondered what sort of society treated humans this way. They are living under the ocean, but they are still just humans. Imagine doing that on the surface. It would be a very dystopian world we were becoming if we all sat around in the stands watching death by sharks tearing you to shreds.

Sylvia is Marko’s older sister by a decade and she can be quite villainess and stir the pot , and then she can be all apologetic. I did find her a great character when she was switched on as the threatening biatch but confused when she was all sobby . You stirred the pot hun, you know Marko and his rules. You planted the seed.

Aiden I thought was a wasted character. I wanted more from him in the plot.

I did cringe a bit with Marko telling Miranda that she could be artificially inseminated. Again, was Robbie going to be performing that procedure?

WT!

“With all due respect, Miranda, you and I won’t be doing anything at all. It will be done artificially.” He paused to stare up at me with raised brows, his eyes inquisitive. “Unless you want - "

The fertility dance was another set of scenes where I was a little bit embarrassed and felt awkward reading. Truly I am probably the only person who felt this. I could justify a fertility dance in my leotard if I was part of a tribe and it was an ancient ritual.

But dang, this just felt awkward and weird.

For me.

I could see it was awkward for Miranda.

For the questions I had as I was reading and noting, I did have a lot answered. I thought that was great, but I was left with a lot unanswered too. They were more plot issues.

The more I read and saw that other humans had in the past few years been stolen/rescued from the surface, both male and female, I couldn’t help wonder why they weren’t put to work in the breeding department, possibly against their will, but none the less that is what Marko was wanting from Miranda so why not just put the others to work bringing the babes into their underwater world and boosting the population.

That was a long sentence, I know.

Miranda wasn’t pliable to the idea at first.

Gee I wonder why?

So why not go find another from the surface after all there were the males and females in the sorting room that weren’t born in Marin so they could possibly have perfect plumbing for breeding.

There was no talk of schooling or hospitals, or real world building in Captivate and that was what I was hungering to understand. I am looking forward to reading # 2 in this series as I DO think Vanessa has a great idea here. I don’t personally and just my one opinion think it was overly well executed.

The underworld contains the baddies, hence the name. It was only touched on. Damir is Sylvia’s twin and of course Marko’s brother. He is the black sheep.

Vanessa does employ a rather sinister side to Damir and what he wants to achieve. I think a bit of Frano rubbed off on him. It is quite sinister.

Marko and Miranda. I had trouble with these two and the believability of their being a love after watching Marko being not so good in the courting department. Sure he did a nice walk and he tried a nice dinner, but he also locked her in her room and jumped to massive conclusions with her and Robbie. That could have cost Robbie a lot and then after the fact, he had a chat with Robbie and he believed him.

I was like, dude could have taken the time to chat to Robbie first. It didn’t take much to convince you after, he could have died.

Miranda and Marko are an awkward couple until they start to get their mojo on.

“Marko’s a good boy. A bit moody and serious for a nineteen-year-old, but he has his charms. Nearly every woman in Marin is in love with him, so you should think yourself lucky,” she sighed.

“It may seem, at first, as though he doesn’t want anything to do with you, but don’t worry. Deep down, he understands his responsibility to Marin, and he also understands the great sacrifice that you have made.” Her full red lips widened into a smile. “See? You both have something in common already.”

Robbie and Miranda have a great relationship . They can talk openly.

He shifted slightly and dipped his head. “I took you, even though I didn’t want to,” he said in a voice so quiet it was almost a whisper. “If that’s not brotherly loyalty, then I don’t know what is.”

I wasn’t sure how I felt about Miranda putting her physical looks down often.

What I did pick up on is this utopia of humans, I didn’t feel like anybody was really happy. I only got to see inside the white castle, mainly, but even there those in the sorting room shucking the pearls had guards standing over them. It didn't feel like a place these humans, or the younger generation anyway were overly happy or joyous about living in. The original inhabitants made the choice willingly to come down and be a part of Frano's exclusive world.

Their parents had to watch their own children not being able to have children. No grandparenting. How was this society to survive? One Queenie is not enough to kick start that population boom.

I don't really understand how large this community is in population numbers but even if their plumbing was working on the ladies, there would end up being inbreeding, surely?

I think I would have felt more satisfied and believed the world I was presented if they could travel to the surface , get their sunshine and moon cycles and could have children and people were happy to leave and let new blood come down. A secret society that had an adventurous side to them.

Hmmm, not sure what I am trying to say here.

The city itself had a beauty visually to it, but it also had an underworld and that darn Colosseum of death, not to mention the dungeons.

I felt that there was a definite Peter Pan vibe with the last children born are now like seventeen or eighteen years old and there will be no more births unless Miranda gets on it and starts using her ovaries for the good of Marin.

Maybe that was what happened in a dying population. Without new babies to care for, people just failed to grow up.

A good start to this series with an interesting idea and a group of characters I want to get to know better and answers discovered.
I am looking forward to book 2 .

Will there be new beginnings?

Will love prevail?

Will a babe be on the agenda?

Michelle

GUEST POST

Captivate Casting Call…

If my Young Adult novel, Captivate, was made into a movie, then this would be my dream cast. Of course, a dream movie cast comes with a dream film director, which would be none other than the amazing Baz Luhrmann (and yes, there is a dance scene in Captivate)

Miranda: played by Aussie actress Emily Browning

She may not be as curvy as Miranda, but Emily’s facial features mirror Miranda’s perfectly. Plus, she is a brilliant, young actress.

Lauren: played by Teresa Palmer

Lauren was probably the first character (besides Marko) that I pictured with the face of an actor. Teresa would make a perfect Lauren. And she’s Aussie too!

Marko: played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers (slightly younger than now)

If you Google his name and bring up some photos of him playing a young King Henry VIII in the Tudors (the earlier episodes), you get exactly how I see Marko inside my head.

Robbie: played by the very handsome Max Irons. Those large, sympathetic eyes of his (and that strapping body) would make him the perfect Robbie.

Aiden: played by Rowan McNamara

This gorgeous indigenous Australian actor from the movie Samson and Delilah would be perfect as Miranda’s best friend

Sylvia: played by Angelina Jolie

Who else could play the sexy older sister of Marko?

Damir: played by Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp playing Angelina’s twin brother!? What a perfect pair the two would make!

BLOG TOUR - BOOK REVIEW & GIVEAWAY - ELECT by RACHEL VAN DYKEN - EAGLE ELITE # 2 - NEW ADULT CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

SYNOPSIS

Details: Kindle,

RATING: 4.5 NIXON STARS!!

Blurb: Goodreads

Would you die for the one you love?

Nixon Abandonato made his choice. And now he has to pay the price. Tracey is the love of his life, but being with him has made her a target of his family's enemies. The only way to keep Trace alive is convince the world she means nothing to him.

Trace Rooks has fallen irrevocably in love with the son of her family's sworn rival, and she knows in her bones nothing can tear them apart. Until Nix suddenly pushes her away and into the arms of his best friend... But Trace isn't ready to give up on a future with Nix--and if he won't fight for them, she will.

In the end, a sacrifice must be made. A life for a life. For what better way to cover a multitude of sins than with the blood of a sinner . . .

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

“Every Saint has a past, every sinner has a future.”
I had always wondered which I was. The saint or the sinner?

I really enjoyed this installment told from Phoenix, Chase and Nixon’s pov’s.

Getting inside the lads heads really helped me connect with them and their fears. It made sense doing it this way as we learn so much. I think it added that much more to the story. It gave the reader a much more real mob life feel to this book.

This is very much a man’s voice book. Trace and Monroe were definitely quieter characters in this one. I think I enjoyed it this way. I wanted to know these lads more.

What is it like being sons and growing up in an environment that was full of violence? Monroe and Trace missed out on that.

Hearing the first time Phoenix or Chase had to do what their fathers ordered them to do. That is frightening stuff to a teenager. It is violent and setting the tone for ongoing violence and even rape.

Mil is the exception to the other girls. I like her. I am intrigued by her.

Sometimes Trace felt like she didn’t belong in this world. But then she up and does something that shows me what blood she has running through her veins.

This installment is about sacrifice.

“ Trust me. Trust in us. No matter what I say, no matter what I do - and I’ll do some terrible things - know that I love you. No matter what.”

... “I’m going to break your heart every day...”

I definitely connected more with understanding what these lads are going through. They are made men and they are trying to keep the peace. They are only in their early twenties and they have a lot they are carrying around on their shoulders.

They are all prepared to die. It seems inevitable they will not live a long life. They know this. It comes with the job description.

“But Trace, you’re never really free from this. You’re always going to be watching your back. You’ll always carry a gun with you just in case, and you’ll still never trust the other families or sometimes, even your own.”

Chase is taking advantage because he honestly can’t help himself, in his role of bodyguard to Trace. His feelings are taking over. Trace is a little naive I think to Chase’s feelings. Maybe a little too dumbed down to his feelings.

Chase is a great guy. Being in his head you can’t help liking him. He seems more casual, even almost like he couldn’t do what Nixon can. But, you may be mistaken. They are all still the sons of the mob. They are all made men.

Let’s just say I’m not as scary as people would like to think I am. No, that nomination goes to Nixon. The things I’d seen that guy do would put nightmares into even the worst sort of prisoner.

Nixon is doing his damnedest to keep Trace away from himself for her own good and Phoenix is showing us a side that had me feeling sorry for him. He has made mistakes. He has not had an easy life.

I would hate me, too. I did hate me. I hated what I was, I hated what I did, I hated what I represented; but most of all, I hated that the legacy I would leave behind as a De Lange was that of an attempted rapist and a rat.

There is a mystery to solve. A who-dunnit?

“Don’t hold back,” he whispered. “When you interrogate, don’t hold back. Pull fingernails off, rip skin, use hammers; get as graphic and scary as you can.  Because if we don’t figure this shit out soon -"

Nixon is definitely a leader. A boss. He had me peeking through my fingers at what he must do, to get answers.

Gahhh!

My words held a double meaning. My asking what I could do for him. He knew who I was; he knew what my family did. I always chose my words carefully for that very reason. Most people asked for favors in public - not in private. So the art of deception was my specialty. If he answered that he needed something taken care of, then I’d know he wanted to deal with Nixon Abandonato, mafia boss.

Sometimes I wondered what normal would be like.

Careful how you answer, Faust. I wouldn’t hesitate to slice you open where you sit.”

Mr. Ryan was waiting in the hall. “Do I even want to know?”

“Nah...” I shook my head and offered him a smile. “That may just get you killed.”

This installment definitely picked up what I thought was possibly missing from Elite. It gave me that sense of believability, what was more real with the life these lads lead, what these lads are capable of. They can do what is necessary to get answers. They will have done terrible, violent things in the past because they were ordered to.

“Living in a constant state of fear wasn’t living - it was hell on earth.”

EXCERPT

“Let’s make a pact.” Chase put his hand on my shoulder.

“A pact?” I sniffled and turned to him. “What kind of pact?”

“One that’s forever. One that protects people rather than hurts them.”

“How do we do that?” I was suddenly interested. What if I could make all the hurt go away? What if I could save everyone!

“We do this.” Chase pulled out his pocketknife and cut open his hand, then nodded to me to do the same thing. Without pausing I cut open my hand and handed back the knife. “Blood brothers. We’re never gonna hurt each other and we’re gonna save those like your ma, Nixon. Ones who can’t save themselves. We’re going to protect them.”

“How?” I watched as the blood dripped from my open palm.

“Rules.” Chase shrugged. “They keep people safe, right? At least that’s what my mom says.” He smiled. “We make rules and we start our own club. That way, we don’t have to listen to anyone but us.”

I liked it. I chewed on my lower lip. “What do we call ourselves?”

“The chosen?” Chase offered.

“No, that sounds lame. We have to sound… more powerful than that.”

My eyes flickered to the road, and a sign poked into the ground. It said election. “Elect.” I pointed. “Let’s call ourselves The Elect.” It made sense; after all, the president was elected, wasn’t he? We weren’t exactly chosen, but we were making the choice, we were electing ourselves protectors. That’s what we were.

“Who else can join?” Chase asked.

“Tex and Phoenix. They’ll want to.” A weight suddenly felt like it was being lifted off my twelve-year-old shoulders. “Should we shake on it?”

“Yeah.” Chase smashed his hand against mine as our blood mixed. “No going back, Nixon.”

“No.” I shook my head. “No going back.”

I pressed my fingers to my temples and watched, replaying that moment over and over again in my head as the outline of Chase and Tracey flickered in the moonlight. Would he really do this to me? After all the shit we’d been through?

I gauged her reaction, hoping that I would be wrong. Praying to God that Trace would just this once listen to me. Her eyes flickered with interest for a few brief seconds before she looked down at the ground.

“Shit.” I waited in the shadows. A part of me knew this would happen. The part that told me to damn my feelings to hell and ignore all the warning signs that I’d been seeing. But now it seemed like it was too late. I stayed, planted where I was, watching, waiting.

“Chase, you can’t…” Trace shook her head. “You can’t be like this. We can’t do this!”

“We aren’t doing anything,” Chase said in low tones, reaching for Trace’s hand. “Don’t you?” He looked directly at me, although all he saw was a shadow. I knew I was well hidden. “Don’t you feel the same way?”

Trace jerked her hand away from Chase’s. “It doesn’t matter what I feel. It’s not about me, Chase.”

“But it is.” Chase reached for her again. This time her hand grasped his in such an intimate embrace I thought I was going to vomit all over the ground. The outside air was cold as hell as little pieces of ice tried to find their way into my wool coat.

“It isn’t.” Trace sighed. “It never was.”

Chase jerked her toward him. She fell against his chest and looked up into his eyes. “What are you doing?”

Chase sighed. “What I should have done a long time ago.” He grabbed the back of her head and pulled her in for a kiss. Their lips touched.

I had to look away.

The only sound in the night was that of my soft footsteps as I walked away… leaving my heart in broken pieces where I’d last stood. She was lost to me; it wasn’t even the Sicilians that had taken her, but my best friend.

A gunshot rang out loud and clear in the night air. I turned back around just in time to see Trace collapse into Chase’s arms.

Blurb : Goodreads

The force of nature that was Rebecca Donovan was in a rut. Money was tight, her elusive sister was suddenly hounding her and it had been far too long between dates. Becoming the victim of a sexual assault was the final straw that broke the vivacious and strong willed florist.

Charlie Cole was floating through life on a wisp of uninspired air. Nothing could compare to the excitement and fulfillment that one night with Rebecca Donovan had brought him. A misunderstanding and stubborn stand-off saw that one night of heaven remain just that, one night.

Little did Rebecca and Charlie know that from the depths of fear, with their lives thrown into turmoil, a fierce love would be born.

love this trailer !!!

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I got to say, I am loving this series. The lads are all humma, humma and the girls are all worthy of the partner Kirsty gives them. It’s like a melding of Maya Banks, Jay Crownover with characters that feel very real, throw in a side order of Lauren Dane. The lads are the strong, protective type with friends who are loyal and true. If you are in trouble, then they will be there on the double.

Rebecca has attracted unwarranted attention and Charlie is the only one who she will let in.

Rebecca has been attacked.

Fiesty, hear-me-roar Rebecca, is now feeling afraid and no longer who she once was. That has been taken away from her.

Hell yeah, I am Rebecca Fucking Donovan, hear me roar! Well, at least I thought I was. My roar now sounded something more like a timid and pathetic whine.

Charlie won’t let that happen. They may have had their misunderstanding in the past, but Charlie wants Rebecca. Rebecca has never given up on her affections for Charlie. She saw Charlie as only a one night stand kind of guy. She didn’t think he was capable of anything more.

This 50’s fasionista needs to claim back who she was and fight her inner demons that are plaguing her nights.

Dressing like a fifties pin-up girl seemed ridiculous now, and I began to see what everyone else saw when they looked at me; a fraud.

Charlie has found someone in Rebecca he thought didn’t exist. He found someone he cared for more than a one night stand. Someone he wanted a forever with.

Charlie grinned. “I guess I should make myself perfectly clear then. You’re not sure what this is? It’s us, you and me, Rebecca and Charlie, Betty Boop, and Caveman Cole. Friends? Always, but this is more, Rebecca. And you should know, I don’t like to share what’s mine, so monogamy has just become my new best friend. The fact that you have a jealous streak makes me ridiculously happy, I like to know that I’m yours. You should also know that only boys make their woman jealous of other women. A real man makes other women jealous of his woman. I intend to make every other woman on the face of this earth insanely jealous of you.”

“Damn, woman. Why does it suddenly feel like I’m the chick in this relationship and you’re the dude?”

Team Charlie.

I am absolutely crushing on this big, beefy fighter. Just roll me about in a Charlie sandwich. I loved him in Saving Ella and I love him even more in Fighting Back. He has such a protective caveman appeal to me. He isn’t too much, he is just right. He has his own skeletons in his closet, but he opened the door for Mercy to help save him. He knows how it feels to need someone who will be your life raft.

“Mercy never let a day go by where she didn’t tell me she loved me, that I was worthy and cherished. She wiped away all the crap my parents fed me, and helped me become the man I am today. Never doubt the power of words, Rebecca, they can help you heal, make you feel whole. Not a day will pass where you won’t hear those kinds of words from me.”

It's his turn to be somebody's life raft.

“No, Betty Boop, you are no heavier than a very warm and pretty blanket.”

His connection with Jax is that of a brother from another mother. They are tight. They behave like brothers. They are loyal to the core. I LOVE their camaraderie.

Jax stood in the doorway, actually he more like filled the doorway - I’m fairly certain he’s still growing. In one hand was a bottle of vodka, in the other was Rebecca’s Clitoria. I smirked and nodded to the innocuous looking plant. “You look awkward with that in your hands.”

“Fuck you,” Jax growled.

Shiz is going down and Rebecca’s sister Emily is in trouble.

Deep. Trouble.

It will take all the calendar men to help stop the evil that is preying on Rebecca and Emily.

Jax was wearing nothing but a pair of track pants, sitting dangerously low on his hips, and it took every ounce of self-preservation not to follow the hard, perfect washboard abs down to the magic V that led into the waistband of his pants. The man was scorching hot perfection, but he didn’t make my heart race like Charlie.

What? I just thought I would remind you of what Jaxon Carter looked like.

RawrrrrRRrrrrrrrr...rrrRRRrrrrr

Mercy is the core, motherly strong female character, who is the glue for some of these characters. Her angels come in the form of Jax, Charlie, Dave, Mary...

Although there are serious issues in this series, Kirsty throws in some comic relief that never fails to make me smile. It shows the warmth of these characters as they handle each day that comes with working at the shelter and it shows how far some of these battered women have come, how having these big guys helping out around the shelter puts a smile on their faces. They are a big self made family.

“Where are my muffins, Mary? You don’t want this to get ugly.” I grinned.

She burst out laughing. “Five minutes, Charlie, just five minutes earlier and you’d have your muffins.”

My playful grin disappeared. “Who took my muffins?” I demanded.

She laughed harder. “Ella left just before you came through the back door. Actually, she ran; I think she knew you would be looking for them.”

That cheeky little brat, I thought to myself. I was definitely kidnapping her precious penis cacti next time I dropped by Jax’s. I’d been threatening to unman her cactus for a long time. Now that she had messed with my muffins, that cactus was done for! The girl was going down!

She raised her hands in self-defense. “I only told Jax,” she said, looking slightly nervous.

My gaze moved to Jax. “I only told Mercy.”

I arched an eyebrow at Mercy, and she shrugged. “I only confided in Annie.”

Annie at least had the good grace to look a little shamed. “I only told Dillon,” she whispered, and I groaned.

“No one told me, but I guessed as much,” said Lola.

Bunch of fucking gossips, I rolled my eyes.

But then I met Braiden. The thinker. There is much more to Braiden.

Braiden was a thinker, a deep thinker. He watched, listened, and seemed to see all. Anyone that quiet had to have dark secrets lurking beneath their cool exterior, and I had no doubt Braiden had plenty, but I still trusted him explicitly.

Whahhh!!

* waggles eyebrows *

It will take a special man to help bring Emily back from the life she has lived for too long.

A certain someone appears up for the challenge.

I am looking forward to #3.

Bring. It. On.

Smashing good job , Kirsty!

Excerpt

“Rain, I’m not letting you go.” He gages my reaction.

“What do you mean you aren’t letting me go? You need to explain this now.” My face is getting hot and it’s not from the sun beating down on me.

“Your father has something I want and I have something he loves. So I can’t let you go until I get my something back.”

“Tell me what it is and I’ll get it for you.” “Impossible.”
“Nothing is impossible. What is it?”

“It’s my father’s share of Kane and Medici.” He reveals, wiping his mouth, then placing the napkin down on his lap.

“Don’t you own that already? Your father has been dead for over four years now. Isn’t all of that settled?” I didn’t understand.

“When my father died, he left the business to your father. He gave me nothing. I’m his son. I should have gotten part of the firm. It’s rightfully mine.” His body is tense.

“I had no idea your dad left the business to my dad. I usually don’t get involved with that stuff. When my mom died, she left Raven and me her share. The money from her part of the business gets deposited in an account every month. Other than that I don’t get anything from the business.”

“What about your mom, Elise? Isn’t that her name? I know she and Mr. Kane were married. I just didn’t know they had you as a son.

Did she get anything?”

“Only money and other assets. Which she left to me when she passed away. He didn’t give her the business either. So you see I want what’s mine and if I don’t get it I will take what’s his.”

“I’m not a possession of my dad’s. I’m his daughter. You can’t own me or trade me for it.”

“Rain, I’m not going to keep you locked away forever. I’m going to make you mine.” His voice became dark and heated.

My insides clinch and I become very warm.

“How are you going to do that?” My voice became very small.

“Your father doesn’t like me. He never has. So when I seduce you and you’re with me, he’ll do

anything to get you back. Including giving me my father’s share of the law firm.”

“There’s just one problem that you didn’t count on.”

“Which is?”
“Me. I won’t be seduced by you, Dominick.”

“It’s not your choice, Rain. It’s what I intend to do. Listen, Rain, you’re very smart girl. You have to agree with my plan. You said it yourself, your father will never let you have a life when he finds out I took you. He will cut you off from Tommy and everything else you love to do. You’ll have nothing.”

“LISTEN YOU PIECE OF SHIT!” I whipped around and I’m up in Dominick’s face. “My parents took very good care of me. There were no locks and no guards like there is here with you. I always honored their wishes. No, it definitely wasn’t easy, but after my mom passed

away my father realized that I didn’t need that type of protection. I wasn’t getting sick any more. Well, up until you took me that is.”

“That maybe be true, but now he’ll put his entire focus on you and he’ll realize that because I was able to get to you there should be locked doors and guards to keep you safe.” His voice is menacing.

Looking down at my hands, the shaking begins. All of the isolation as a child, the lack of control, and the events of the past few days come flooding in. My tears begin to fall.

Dominick looks at me softly, but still with hunger and greed in his eyes. His hand comes over mine, causing me to really look at him.

“I can give you what you want, Rain. A good life, where you can travel, be safe, and never be alone. I can make you happy. I understand you, Rain.”

CHAPTER TWO

TALL, DARK AND WHO IS HE?

I begin to realize as I regain consciousness that I am not making my flight to Italy. I don’t know where I am or what’s happening to me.

I do remember the SUV but that’s about all. Someone has laid me down in the back seat of the vehicle with my hands bound behind my back. Which means whoever has taken me better be intent on doing me in, because no one, and I mean no one stands between me and Capri. If they know what’s good for them that is. Well, maybe except for Tommy. My heart’s racing at this point and I have one hell of a headache beginning to develop. I feel sick to my stomach. My wrists are burning from the restraints which feel like plastic wire ties.

There are two men speaking to each other in what must be the front of the car. I’m blindfolded, so I’m turned around a bit. We’re driving, but where? Are we out of the city? How long have we been on the road? Are we in another state? I need to focus on what they’re saying to get a clue to where I’m being taken. If I don’t move, they may think I’m still asleep and talk more freely. My head is killing me now.

One of the men starts to speak. I think he may be the driver, but I’m not sure.

“The boss wants us to call ahead so Miss Medici’s room will be ready for her.”

My room. This must be a hoax. Tommy probably planned this to keep me from going to Capri without him. Okay I’ll play along. I wouldn’t put this passed Tommy, but he knows not to stand in my way when I need to leave. I guess I'll find out soon enough. Then fear sets in. What if it isn’t Tommy? What if I’m really being kidnapped? What if someone sick has taken me? My dad isn’t going to take this shit lightly. He’s a very powerful attorney. Family means everything to him. Whoever did this better be prepared to die.

The second guy is talking, probably the passenger, again I’m still not sure because I can’t see anything.

“I’ll call him, you keep your eyes on the road. You’ve never driven out this way before. We can’t fuck this up, or we’ll be dead.”

Holy shit! This is no joke. I begin to get dizzy and I think I’m going throw up. This has to be an enemy of my dad’s. I know he takes on some high profile clients but I wouldn’t know who it could be,because I don’t really pay much attention to his business. I

wonder what sort of shit he has gotten himself into this time. Especially, because I’ve now become some sick piece of shit’s center of attention. I just thought of something. The passenger said they haven’t been out this way before. Maybe we’re heading to NJ or Connecticut. Why aren’t they using a GPS? Why would they use a GPS? That’s really the question. They’re men. We all know men and directions don’t mix. That or they’re afraid to use one because its voice would give away the destination.

“Hey, she’s been out a long time. Do you think she’s okay?”

“I’m sure she’s fine. It’s better for us that she sleeps. It makes our job easier. I don’t like dealing with hostages.”

So boys, I’m making your day easier? Not for long gentlemen.

Your boss ruined my day. Now I’m about to fuck with yours. Time to play the difficult hostage. Don’t get me wrong, I’m really scared, but I’m not going down without a fight. I realize that my legs aren’t tied. So I wriggle them up so I can feel if my phone is still in my boot. It’s still there and that’s where I intend for it to stay. This must be their first hostage job. What assholes. Once I’m alone I’ll text Tommy. He’ll know what to do.

“Hey she’s waking up.” The passenger guy is taking notice of my movements.

I swing myself around into a sitting position. This is no small feat. My hands are bound from behind and I’m blindfolded. This little maneuver makes my head spin. At that point, I can feel the sun on myface. This tells me we couldn’t have been driving for that long. It’s still daylight and it’s hot.

“Miss Medici” The driver called me by my name, “We’ll be at ourlocation before too long. I’m assuming you have some questions. Once we’re there our boss will explain everything to you.” He was very calm and matter of act in his delivery.

Taking in what he said I became scared, but I didn’t want to freak out in front of them and give myself away. Breathing deep and exhaling I decided I’m not going to go easy on them. I lifted my foot and slammed the heel of my boot into to that back of what turned out to be the passenger’s seat.

I startled him. He yells. “Hey what are you doing!”

“Fuck both of you! Where are you taking me?” I’m trying to sound tough.

“Listen Miss Medici, this can go very easy or it can get especially hard for you.” The driver spoke this time. His voice was calm, but I’m sure he wouldn’t hesitate to hurt me if necessary.

I tried to calm down. It isn’t easy. I’m very tired. I wonder if they drugged me and that’s why I blacked out, or did they hit me over the head? Because my skull still hurts something fierce.

“Listen to me you pieces of shit. I’m supposed to be on a plane to Italy. Far away from wherever we are. So since my trip isn’t happening, I think, at the very least, I deserve something for this massive headache that you’ve given me. Furthermore I want to stretch my legs, assholes.” Then I kick the seat for a second time.

“I can give you something for the headache, but I can’t let you out of the car just yet. We have our orders, Miss Medici.” He stated it simple as that.

“Our boss would have our heads if we let you out of the car to stretch your legs.” This was the passenger guy talking this time.

“Well, I need to pee, so you’re going to have to let me out to use a bathroom.”

“That’s the oldest trick in the book. We let you out and you escape.” Said the driver.

“Okay, don’t let me out then I’ll just piss in your boss’ car. Then you can explain how his shiny new SUV material got ruined.”

“It’s a rental. He won’t care.”

“Naturally.”

“Everybody just shut up.” The driver bellowed, making me jump.

“We’re only a few minutes from where we need to be. You can go then.”

Great! Once I’m alone in the bathroom I’ll text Tommy. I just need to remain calm until then. I’m still and silent, but my tears start to build. I need to hold them back. This time it works.

The truck is now on a gravel type road. I can hear the tires rolling over the rocks. It sounds like corn popping. We come to a complete stop and the driver shuts off the engine. The doors in the front open. Then I hear the door to my right unlock. A large hand wraps around my bicep, effectively pulling me out of the vehicle. I stand there slightly off balance. The same strong hand holds me up so that I wouldn’t fall on my ass. They haven’t removed the blindfold yet, so I can’t equalize and balance myself that easily. I’m aware of the saltiness in the air and the sound of waves and seagulls. We’re at the beach. Which one? New Jersey, New York, where? How long would I be here? Is this a stop before their boss buries my lifeless body?

Clearly I need get a hold of myself. I’m letting my thoughts get the better of me. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.

Now I’m being led up a set of short stairs. Still being held by someone. I don’t know if it’s the passenger or the driver. No one is speaking at the moment. Then I hear a voice from behind me.

“What do we have here?” It’s the driver.

I’m thinking to myself I must have dropped my phone from being shuffled out of the SUV. Yet, I still feel something near my ankle.

“A camera and there’s film in it.”

I screamed. “NO! That’s my favorite camera. Don’t fuck with it.”

Then I hear the sound of the film being ripped out of it and the camera falling onto gravel. The noise it made as it hit the stones was horrible. At that point I knew the lens must have shattered. I’m so upset. It’s vintage. I love it. Now out of nowhere one single tear fell down my cheek. However, I don’t say anything else.

The driver addressed me. “Miss Medici, you won’t be able to use it, so we’ll just put it with the rest of your junk.”

He seems amused by what he has done. Fuck him. Currently I’m being led through a building and some doors. It’s extremely dark in comparison to the brightness outside. I feel something foreign being wrapped around my arms. I hear sound of handcuffs being place on each wrist. They’re ice cold. Then I felt something sharp remove the plastic wire ties that were originally binding me. They still haven’t removed the blindfold from my eyes yet.

It was just then that I heard footsteps outside the room. The door opened and someone else entered. There’s a new voice that is definitely not the driver or his assistant.

“How did it go? Any problems that you would like to relay to me about the girl?” His voice is firm and very dark. It sent a cold chill through my veins.

I recognized the driver’s voice.
“No sir, but you should know that...”
“Go on Gerard, what should I know about her?” “She is one wild chick.”
“How so?” The new guy seems curious.

“She’s been cursing worse than a truck driver. She was kicking and screaming. She isn’t at all like the

way you described sir. Miss Medici is far from refined.”

“Refined? Refined! I was taken from my home against my will, you asshole, and you want me you be refined? What should I do say please and fucking thank you?”

The new guy chuckled.

“Well, Gerard, it seems you’re right. Even though Miss Medici may not have been what you expected, she is correct in saying that being kidnapped can show a different side to a person’s usual personality.” The mystery man seemed quite amused.

“I guess so, sir. Oh, this is hers. The lens cracked when we were bringing her in the building. She won’t be taking pictures any time soon.

“My camera didn’t just break, asshole! You ripped the film out, then smashed my camera on purpose!” I yelled indignantly.

My evil host sounded like he was examining the camera Gerard handed to him.

“Hmmm, the lady has very good taste. Gerard put this with all of

Miss Medici’s belongings. We’ll discuss the circumstances on how it broke later. I’m intrigued though why a lawyer would need such a beautiful vintage camera.”

Holy shit, he thinks I’m Raven. We do look alike. We are twins after all. He must not have done his homework very well. Raven and I don’t dress the same and she doesn’t have bangs like I do. I’m wondering why he would kidnap her. What did she do to piss him off?

My biggest question and my fear is what will he do when he finds out I’m not Raven. I need to breathe and wait for the opportunity to text Tommy. I’m becoming very drowsy and it felt like I was falling. Massive arms came around my body and laid me down on something soft. Then I hear him whisper in my ear.

“I’ve got you now. I’ll take care of everything.” This is the last thing I hear before I pass out for the second time today.

About the Author:

As far back as I can remember, I have loved books. I love reading them and I have finally admitted to myself that I love to write them. Miss Taken is my debut novel as an Indie Writer of Adult Romance. It's the first book in the series.

My career before writing started in apothecary pharmacy. Working alongside the pharmacist, I enjoyed being around the customers and assisted in making compounded skincare products. Once the pharmacy was sadly sold, I worked as a make-up artist for brands such as Princess Marcella Borghese, Bobbi Brown and MAC Cosmetics. Being around different people and the work I did was never boring, yet something was always missing. Although I am still working, I decided it was time to make writing more than just a dream but a reality.

Then finally one day after Hurricane Sandy hit the shores of NJ, I read an interview about longtime friend and fellow author Joseph Grant. It really hit home for me. So after talking with Joe and my mom, I jumped into the world of writing and recently self-published Miss Taken, so my works would be more than for "my eyes only."

Since the day I started to write Rain and Dominick's story, I have never looked back, nor have I regretted one single moment of it.

When I write, much of the time the story plays in my head as a movie and sometimes even includes background music, we can all use a little background music.

I try to add elements of things I love and share them with the readers. I will continue to create characters and stories that you can laugh, cry, love, hate and even become slightly crazy about.

Let's face it, we can all use some crazy to escape real life.

Xoxo
