SPOTLIGHT SATURDAY # 5

RACHEL CAINE

THE MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES SERIES

Aussie Covers for books # 1 - # 12
There are 15 books in the series.
US covers
Books # 1 - # 12

So, I am a HUGE fan of Morganville Vampires. It is a YA paranormal series and I have put readers of ALL ages onto this series. It is simply brilliant fun. I would probably say it is my favorite long YA series out of everything I have read YA to date.

I was totally sold by book # 3, Midnight Alley and I was addicted. I think each book definitely gets better and better , until insanely good.

The characters are ALL brilliant. I think Myrnin is one of my faves. I think he comes into the series from book 2 or book 3. He is a little crazy, a little addictive and a little brave and swing back around to cray cray. He is quite a unique character. I don't think I have read anybody quite like him to date.

I have read and reviewed the first twelve books. There are fifteen in total. I am excited to binge on the last three in a row as this series is very binge-worthy.

Shane, Claire, Michael and Eve are your main characters and then you have a pile of sub characters that Rachel juggles like a carnival pro.

You can read my reviews on the first twelve books HERE scroll down to them.

I also have a pile of other postings on this series. Plus among all the postings I have some video I took of a signing when Rachel came to Australia in 2011. She was at a Dymocks signing and I went down and met her.

A while back Rachel was looking for financial backing/sponsorship for a web TV show of Morganville Vampires. She got the backing to kickstart the series and you can read more about it HERE. Scroll down to 11th June posting and you can see what she did. I ummed and ahhhed about putting in some small dollars. It was in pledge groups of a certain amount. But peeps came through in droves and she had the $$$ before she could blink. That's saying a lot for the series. It is enormously popular. I totally dig it.

The thing is when a series is coming to an end and I love the series, I always have trouble reading the last book. I have always read this series in groups of books. Like three or four at a time. I can't just read one.

I have the last three to read and it will be kind of sad when I finish Daylighters # 15.

If you haven't started this series you can binge away to your hearts content without having to wait for the next book.

TRUST ME when I say it is a brilliant series. It is YA for both teenagers and adults. It flows really well and Rachel will give you an entertaining ride. I just think each book gets better and better until I was on one of those reading highs when I finished Black Dawn # 12 and I was yelling Yehaaa!

Over half a million ratings on Goodreads for the series. There's a bunch of novella's I need to read too. I do love a good novella. I think these would be great to read.

I can only say you are missing out if you don't pick up this series. If you already have read this series or started it, then you know what I am talking about.

You can pop over to Jemina's facebook page, I only cyberpsace met her the other day and she is a brilliant artist. She does some fabulous artwork on Morganville Vampires. Here is one image I took from her page to show you. And see if you can see Bob the spider.  I also love she put in Myrnin wearing his bunny slippers :D

Freakin' Cool Trailer!
Dang, this has outstanding potential for a tv series/set of movies
Come on suits make it work!!
Actually this particular book would be a brilliant video game.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

We’re in Morganville.
Nothing’s ever going to be perfect.

When I think Rachel can’t go up another notch in this series, BAM! she does it again.

So many wonderful , exciting, nail biting, a bit traumatic , scenes in this book.

Truly this series, just keeps out shining its last book in the series. I am sitting on my hands so I don’t bit my nails anymore waiting for Bitter Blood to crack open.

Claire is in top ‘I can save the town’ form, goes a bit Macgyver and pulls a ‘don’t mess ( polite) with me’, in a BIG WAY.

Poor Shane, brilliant scene with him and the after effects, the vulnerability of his character had me wanting to hug the boy.

Visualising Shane and a Flamethrower...well...move over Rambo.

Michael and Eve, a little bridge is gapped, but it probably had to be addressed.

Myrnin! Myrnin! Myrnin!!! You mad, crazy, loveable, crazy, insane, crazy, guy...*shakes head at his plan*

Oliver and Amelie...OMG!!! Bitter Blood, it will probably rock my socks off when it comes to these two. Oh, dear...

Theo, the quiet little doctor... ooooo I would not want to mess with the quiet ones. I think Theo has some super secret , the unassuming Doc has some serious ...errr... fluffy dice ( putting it politely) . I think I would watch my mouth around Theo. I think the good Doc is not to be messed with.

Lobotomy anyone?

This book just kept my heart pounding and pretty much had me squealing into the pages with the intense, ‘OMG is everybody gonna make it’... eeeeeeeee... feeling.

Everybody had to take of their kiddie pants and pull on the big serious adult pants in this installment, cause things are going to be a changing, me thinks!!!

Oh dear, this is gonna get crazier than crazy, little ol’ Morganville J

FAVE QUOTES:

Shane shrugged, marked through it, and wrote ( in smaller letters, since the paper was running out) , BIG EFFING TRUCK.

Theo circled the word EFFING and raised his eyebrows. Claire made a frustrated noise in her throat, grabbed the pencil , and marked it out.

Ah, Theo mouthed, and smiled. Good.

‘Wow,’ Shane said. ‘You really know how to drum up team spirit. Did you print up Team Total Fail jerseys, too?’

‘Shane’s in trouble,’ Claire said, ‘and I swear to God that if you don’t help me, I’ll break your finger off and use the bone to pick the lock.’

Jason stopped laughing and gave her a long, odd look. ‘You’re kind of serious,’ he said. ‘Huh. That’s dark, for you.’

‘If she puts a foot wrong, I am seriously considering playing Shank the Skank,’ she said.

It was easy to love somebody when love was happy, but when it was hard, when it meant facing things you feared... that was different.

‘Ay-firmative,’ Eve said, and tried for a smile. ‘Sorry. An Aliens reference always makes me feel better at times like this. Except I’m not sure I’m the one who lives through the movie.’

Myrnin hesitated, then ... grabbed at Claire. He was fumbling at her, and she was so stunned that she started hitting him -- with no result, of course - as he patted down her pockets and shirt, quick light touches as he muttered, ‘Sorry, sorry, beg pardon, sorry...’ And then he pulled back with her cell phone in his hand.

Myrnin was silent for a beat, and then he said, ‘Bob would be disappointed in you.’

‘Bob the spider?’

‘He looks at you like a mother, you know......’

Michelle

I thought this was a pretty awesome fan made casting vid.
I am rather impressed with Myrnin.
Interesting choice, yet I can see it.

Mind you I can see Sheldon from Big Bang Theory too
as Mrynin, if he pulled up his manly pants tight:)

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

Holy mac and cheese, Holy Mother of Pearl, Holy Grail of the errrr..... Grail?? This book blew my mind every single chapter.

Holy ! Holy!

This book is stuffed fully of ‘grab the oh shit bar’ moments. The title ‘Last Breath’, makes the mind think, it wanders about , theories banging around the brain.

I. Was. Absolutely. Stunned.

Fish out of water.

Gasping for breath.

Throw your hands in the air.

*Face plant*

The build up from chapter one, which alone is stuffed full of moments, keep reading and reading and then you will be WT HECK just happened? Then you will reread that part as it just .......happens.

No warning.

* whispers* Just happens........*drops the book*

I was quite gutted.... then the desperation of that moment that follows......*sniffle*.

Rachel has written an outstanding instalment. Legs 11 ( #11) , just takes the reader on a ride of rebelliousness , the fight for their lives, new villain......OMG!!! WOW!! Loss, power play, stolen moments, grief, heartache, you feel scared for the characters, you are like WT Heck (polite version) just happened here people!!! You will cry out in shock, feel very disturbed, be creeped out, and then you will find yourself turning into the kickass reader and joining in the fight. Bit of shadow boxing.... well it helped me.

Rachel has pulled the rip cord and shaken up Morganville and its residents, like none of her other books.

Michael and Shane even find time to slide in a moment.

‘You still want to kill me?’

‘Sometimes, yeah.’ Shane, on the other hand, sounded completely serious. ‘I love you, man, but - it takes time for all that stuff to go away. I don’t want to feel it.’

‘I know , shithead.’

‘If you break Eve’s heart, I will kill you.’

Michael stopped playing. ‘It’s complicated.’

‘No, it’s not. Stop screwing around and commit.’

‘Oh , so now you’re giving me relationship advice? You can’t commit to a cell phone contract, let alone - ‘

‘I’m committed,’ Shane interrupted. ‘To her. You know I am.’

‘Yeah,’ Michael said. ‘Yeah , I know that. And you know if you screw it up with Claire, I’ll rip your throat out and drink you like a juice box, so you’re got some incentive.’

Shane laughed. ‘You know what? I do that, you’ve got permission. And you know how I feel about that whole drinking-me stuff.’

Myrnin, Myrnin, Myrnin....OMG!! And that is all I will say ...well, and, Holy Shit Batman! What can I say? The moment deserved at least that.

Trust me!

Monica, heels and all, she can still make an entrance.

This book is told from several POV’s. You get to feel frightened and a whole bag of emotions through each of their eyes. It really was quite a trip this book.

Eve, bless her, she is not letting anything stand in her way, she is on a mission and Michael is hers, mind you it is the least of their worries, it kind of paled ( no pun intended) in comparison.

I can’t even begin to tell you how awesomely villainess the villain is in this book. I have never felt so frightened for my Morganville crew both fanged and unfanged.

Visually, Rachel really wrote it powerfully, colourfully, and you see it all play out in your head, so clearly.

This book is a very 3D experience! Very fast paced , action filled, and frightening on so many levels. Sometimes you just wanted to help out.

funny gifs

This is me helping out.
What? It's the best I could come up with.

Humans of Morganville, bless their silly brains, they are trying to go all commando, tattoos and all.....* shakes head*

Amelie, still trying to solve it her way, but can she pull it off?

Far out ( again polite version) this would make a TOTALLY freakin’ awesome tv series or set of movies. These books just get better and better.

FAVE QUOTES:

‘Look, ask him, OK? This is girl talk. I don’t do girl talk.’

She punched him in the shoulder. ‘Ass.’

‘That’s better. I was starting to feel like we should go shoe shopping or something.’

‘Being a girl is not a bad thing!’

‘No.’ He took his hand out of his pocket and put his arm around her shoulders, huggin her close. ‘If I could be half the girl you are, I’d be - wow, I have no idea where I was going with that, and it just turned out uncomfortable, all of a sudden.’

‘Jackass.’

‘Claire! I need you immediately. Something’s wrong with Bob.’ Myrnin , her mad - scientist, blood-addicted boss, sounded actually shaken. ‘I can’t get him to eat his insects, and I used his favourites. He just sits there.’

...... ‘Just because he’s a spider doesn’t mean he deserves any less concern! Claire, you have a way with him. He likes you.’

Just what she needed. Bob the spider liked her.

“You’re kidding,’ Shane said. ‘Do you think I want to visit Crazy McTeeth in his lair of insanity?’

‘No,’ Claire said, ‘but I’m pretty sure you won’t like it if I go alone when I just kind of promised to be with you. So....?’

‘Right. I’ve been missing Nutty McFang anyway.’

‘Stop making up names for him.’

‘What about Count Crackula?’

‘I am not in the mood for you shallow bullshit right now. If you get in my way, I will cut you, because you are nothing but a speed bump on my way....’

‘And did you bring what I asked?’

‘I’m insane , not forgetful.’

‘Oh this is good,’’ Eve said. ‘I’m putting down a bet that it’s a parade float.’

‘Not taking that one,’ Shane said. ‘Hey , do we get cool shotguns?’

‘No,’ Amelie said, and made a sharp military gesture. ‘With me. And stay close.’

BOOK REVIEW - BITE CLUB by RACHEL CAINE - THE MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES # 10 - THE MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES MARATHON WEEK - PENGUIN, RAZOR BILL

By: Rachel Caine
Published By: Penguin, Razor Bill
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback, 442 Pages

RATING: 5 MIND BLOWING STARS!!

Blurb : Goodreads

New York Times bestselling author Rachel Caine is "a first-class storyteller" (#1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris).

After discovering that vampires populate her town, college student Claire Danvers knows that the undead just want to live their lives. But someone else wants them to get ready to rumble.

There's a new extreme sport getting picked up on the Internet: bare—knuckle fights pitting captured vampires against each other—or humans. Tracking the remote signal leads Claire—accompanied by her friends and frenemies—to discover that what started as an online brawl will soon threaten everyone in Morganville...

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

Stinky Doug, phials of blood........Dead Doug.

Rachel Caine has taken a new direction with Bite Club. The story has to do with Dead Doug and the mystery unfolding there, but we get to travel around in Shane’s head. I liked this. It was at times creepy, the wealth of story that was bobbling about in his head and we got some wonderful depth from Shane. There was a whole lot of anger management issues going on there........not entirely his fault.

I am going to say I think this is the best book so far in the series, holy mac and cheese. Rachel had Shane giving Myrnin a run for his money in the losing the plot stakes. ( no pun intended with the stake...well, maybe)

There was a whole lot of poop going down in this book and poor Claire was trying to wade through it all. This instalment would have looked very impressive on the big screen.

I loved having Detective Travis Lowe and Detective Joe Hess back, albeit for a short breath of a visit, but it puts that bit of prospective into the storyline, that there are human cops policing Morganville as well.

I do laugh at Frank and Myrnin’s working relationship. Rachel can have so much fun here. For obvious reasons.

I am still deciding about Oliver. There is always a teeny something showing through, but then it hides back underneath his facade of cranky, badass vampire.

I do enjoy this series, so much. Rachel just has me there, in Morganville, with Claire and all the things she carries around on her shoulders as she fights for good , against what is lurking in the shadows, waiting to pray upon those she loves.

I even felt a bit kickass crazy with Shane this time too. He was in my head, talking all kinds of crazy. It was quite a ride being in Shane’s head.

I have started Last Breath, and OMG!! All I will say is ‘RUN.’

FAVE QUOTES:

She turned and kissed him full-on, just a sweet, swift brush of lips, because he was already moving.... and then he did a double take and came back to kiss her again, slower, hotter, better.

Shane fluttered his hands. ‘Oh, and then we were all elected as ice princesses and asked to go to Disneyland!’ He rolled his eyes.

‘Claire,’ he said, in a low , soothing , carefully controlled voice. ‘I would like you to take out your mobile phone and call the police, please. Do that now. Perhaps that emergency number. ‘

.....’Why?’ she whispered, as she started punching the three numbers in.

‘Because it’s an emergency,’ he said, and then something hit him.......

‘Karma,’ she said. ‘It’s a bitch.’

‘Dear girls, I can let anyone get hurt, because in my world, my safety and well-being come first,’ he said. ‘I thought you knew that by now.’

‘Don’t make me say nasty things in front of the juveniles,’ Frank said, ‘because I’m not your dog, crazy man....’

‘I wouldn’t do that. I am not a - what do you call it? Snark?’

Myrnin raised his chin. ‘Dear lady, I’ve never----‘

‘Only ‘cause I don’t allow you anywhere near my property. you know what I call you? Trapdoor Spider.’

Myrnin blinked. ‘That is .... surprisingly accurate, actually......’

'Follow me,' Myrnin said.  'And do stay together. And by the way, this is the last time I go anywhere with you people. You are all insane.'

Blurb : Goodreads

Get ready for "non-stop vampire action" (Darque Reviews) in the latest Morganville Vampire novel from New York Timesbestselling author Rachel Caine.

While developing a new system to maintain Morganville's defenses, student Claire Danvers discovers a way to amplify vampire mental powers. Through this, she's able to re-establish the field around this vampire-infested Texas college town that protects it from outsiders.

But the new upgrades have an unexpected consequence: people inside the town begin to slowly forget who they are-even the vampires. Soon, the town's little memory problem has turned into a full-on epidemic. Now Claire needs to figure out a way to pull the plug on her experiment- before she forgets how to save Morganville...

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

Vampire Bunny slippers....yay!! yes, my fave manic character Myrnin has his vampire bunny slippers on in this instalment. I soooo badly want a piece of character artwork to be done on Myrnin.

Myrnin is at his manic best in this book. I have NEVER read another character to date in any genre that is a Myrnin type character. Rachel writes him with such a distinct voice and his character traits are ....well, if you don’t know Myrnin, then I shall not spoil it for you.

Myrnin is such a stand out character, in this whole series, I love him, I am scared by him, I would like to say nothing surprises me that he does, but dang, Rachel does surprise me. What a brain ( no pun intended ) Rachel has , to think up as many ways as she can over a series to have a character be just so outstandingly crazy, lol! Yet, there are glimpses of more to Myrnin, especially with Claire.

Michael is as smexi as always with a hint of the forgetful. Shane is the guy with a lot of heartache he is carrying around, but he knows how to bring home the Brisket.

Claire finds herself surrounded by what I would call a town with a bad case of Dementia/Alzheimers. Amelie has some punishment in store for Claire, Amelie style.

Eve, just love this girl, she wears Goth so well.

Oliver and Amelie are having a game of power play. I really do like Oliver. I know, he is supposed to be all scarey and old and scarey , but there is something underneath that he shows every now and then.

Hannah, well Miss Moses, you seem to have a little secret, spending some time with a certain somebody.

Monica is getting put in her place, Claire style. Claire is getting inventive and growing a set where the dim witted Monica is concerned.

Loved this instalment, I really don’t think this lot know how to stay out of trouble, and I for one am glad. This is such a wonderful YA pleasure of mine to read. I just slide back into Morganville and its crazy goings on so easily.

Oh and Rachel does take it a step further ....oh dear....Myrnin!!!!

At the end of my book there was a short story titled ‘Worth Living For’. It is set between Faded out and Kiss of Death. It was a little extra into Bishop, and how he was apprehended. I quite enjoyed seeing Shane and a motorcycle complete with night vision helmet in my mind. Kinda of smexi:)

I go forth and am now onto Bite Club...oh yes, this is almost sounding like Fight Club , vampire style.......or is it?

BOOK REVIEW - KISS OF DEATH by RACHEL CAINE - THE MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES # 8 - THE MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES MARATHON WEEK - PENGUIN - RAZOR BILL - 4.5 STARS!!

By: Rachel Caine

Published By: Razor Bill, Penguin

Released : Available Now

Details: Paperback, 348 Pages

RATING: 4.5 MAYHEM STARS!!

Blurb: Goodreads

A new chapter in the New York Times bestselling Morganville Vampires saga.

Vampire musician Michael Glass has attracted the attention of a big- time producer who wants to cut a demo and play some gigs-which means Michael will have to enter the human world. For this, he's been assigned escorts that include both a dangerous immortal as well as Michael's all-too-human friends. And with that mix of personalities, this is going to be a road trip from hell...

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

I am back on my marathon of MV. I slid straight back into the town of Morganville and all the characters that make this series such fun to read. This is wonderful addictive YA.

Myrnin was noticeably absent. I love this crazy , genius , scarey, crazy, sometimes down right dangerous, vampire. We get a bit of Myrnin ......... BOL!! or should I be a bit ugh!??

It’s hard to tell with Myrnin, as he is always very serious about his brainy ideas, and this one is a bit more brain than a good idea.

No vampire bunny slippers in sight L

We are left with that thought in mind as the story takes us this time outside of Morganville.

ROAD TRIP!!!

The hotties Michael and Shane, Goth Eve and super smart Claire, are escorted by Oliver, the hippie looking, uber old and dangerous vampire ,outside the town limits on a road trip to get Michael to a recording studio. Amelie has agreed to allow them all to leave , the passes are good for up to a week, and Oliver comes with the passes to freedom as part of the road trip crew.

Oliver takes them via a pit stop for some ‘do not ask’ business and it all goes to the pooper.

Quite frankly I think they were safer, and that is saying something, inside the town of Morganville, and all the goings on, than outside of it. Humans and laws can be a dangerous place.

Not to mention the ..............

Shane and Michael find themselves trying to protect the girls. Michael is just so darn smexi, and Shane is the hottie with the humorous dialogue........ then Michael is just so darn smexi, ( yes , I did repeat that)  with Eve....and that kissing scene....you will know the one. I would love to hear Michael play his guitar and hear him sing. That is one thing I find hard when reading a book, when the character you have connected with plays an instrument and sings and you can’t hear it but you know he is awesome because the other characters tell you. It’s quite a tease
J

Monica and her minions are still...well.... Monica and her minions. Some things don’t change. She is always good value, kind of a walking manual for what you don’t want to behave like. She somehow never quite manages to sound intelligent. Just mean.

I love Eve and the errrrr.....’Fate’ she has been dealt. Very cool in a bit of a creepy way, but very Eve suited. I do love Eve. I would just love to be able to break out the clothes she wears as she just does it Eve style and I commend people for doing it their way without any apologies. Although, I do believe she blended a bit better in Morganville. Toning Eve down is messing with what I look forward to reading. I love living vicariously through Eve’s clothing world.

Just a cool chick. Plus she has Michael. *waggles eyebrows*

I’m back on my horse and riding back into Morganville for Ghost Town # 9 and hopefully Myrnin and Claire work out their difference of opinion on that brainy idea Myrnin came up with.

Hmmmm, I’m with Claire J

BOOK EXCERPT - BLACK DAWN by RACHEL CAINE - MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES # 12

UK COVER

CLAIRE

It would have been better if he’d screamed.

Michael Glass didn’t scream. Instead, he made a terrible keening noise in the back of his throat, arched his back, and began to flail violently inside his zipped-up sleeping bag. Fabric shredded under vampire strength, and insulation bulged out of the tears as he fought his way free, but even once it was off him he just kept . . . flailing.

Across the room, Claire Danvers bolted straight up to her feet, tripped over her own sleeping bag, and managed to catch herself against a wall just before she would have hit the floor face-first. Her heart was slamming too fast against her ribs, and she had the sour, helpless taste of panic in her mouth.
They’re here, was the only coherent thought in her head. She had to be ready to fight, to run, to react, but all she could think of was how utterly scared she was just now. And how helpless.

There were things out there in the world, things that vampires feared, and now those things were here. She was only seconds out of a very light, fitful sleep, but she knew that the nightmares had followed her effortlessly right into the real world. The draug. They weren’t vampires; they were something else, something that moved through water, formed out of it, dragged vampires down to a slow and awful death.

A week ago, she’d have laughed something like that off as a bad joke, but then she’d seen them come for Morganville, Texas. Come with the rains that never fell in this desert-locked, sunbaked town where the vampires had, finally, made their last stand.

Today she woke up with the blind and panicked knowledge that no matter how bad the world was with vampires in it, a world that held the draug was vastly worse. They’d come to Morganville, infiltrated stealthily, built their numbers until they were ready to fight . . . until they could sing their infinitely awful song that somehow, impossibly, was also beautiful, and irresistible. To humans as well as to vamps..................

Pop over Penguin Between The Lines - for book excerpt and to read the rest of this excerpt. It is a nice juicy long piece you can read. I love this series. I love Myrnin, he is just so unpredictable and hilarious.

By: Rachel Caine
Published By: Razor Bill, Penguin
Released : Available Now
Details : Paperback, 345 Pages

RATING : 4 BOB STARS!!!

Book Blurb: Taken From Goodreads

Without the evil vampire Bishop ruling over the town of Morganville, the resident vampires have made major concessions to the human population. With their newfound freedoms, Claire Danvers and her friends are almost starting to feel comfortable again…

Now Claire can actually concentrate on her studies, and her friend Eve joins the local theatre company. But when one of Eve’s castmates goes missing after starting work on a short documentary, Eve suspects the worst. Claire and Eve soon realize that this film project, whose subject is the vampires themselves, is a whole lot bigger—and way more dangerous—than anyone suspected.

BOOK REVIEW:

An actress is amongst the four,

A villain has entered from before,

Myrnin with long curling, lush black hair,

Wearing most comfortable, bunny slippers in his lair.

With a scream from his apprentice Claire,

After opening a box,

Only if you dare,

A new found friend inside, I think I’ll name him Bob.

With a sunburn so bright,

From too much sunlight,

Claire gives all her friends a fright,

To Monica’s great, great delight.

Amelie is in mourning,

Rogue vampires a group are forming,

Kim the historian, isn’t being a very nice woman,

Oh dear...that was without warning.

Pennywell, is it a she or a him,

Let’s make it even and call it a shim,

Oliver has decided that the vote may need to swing.

For Amelie it could be looking grim.

Ada is not playing very nice,

Myrnin needs to heed Claire’s advice,

Jealousy makes a woman do bad things,

Ada will have nobody stand in the way of her love, for Myrnin.

A deal is made,

One month to have it weighed,

Amelie will not help Claire and pay,

The next book , ‘Kiss of Death’, will have its say.
