BLOG TOUR - THE FALLEN PRINCE by SHEA BERKLEY - KEEPERS OF LIFE # 2 - ENTANGLED PUBLISHING - BOOK REVIEW - THE MARKED SON # 1

Today on Novels On The Run is my stop for The Fallen Prince blog tour. I was supposed to have both reviews for The Marked Son and The Fallen Prince here on my stop. I am a tad behind on The Fallen Prince. The review will be up soon. I really dug The Marked Son. If I was to recommend it to somebody I would say if you liked Julie Kagawa's - Iron Fey series then you will like this series. They are not similar, but I think anybody who likes the Iron Fey series would love this one.

Check out my review for The Marked Son on today's stop.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I had been looking at this book for quite some time, it is the cover. It drew me in. Then I got the opportunity to be on The Fallen Prince blog tour so it was time to crack open The Marked Son. I had no idea what this book was about.

The cover made me feel like it was a fantasy read. I had not read the blurb. I have quite a habit of just reading a book without any prior knowledge of genre or characters. It’s how I like to roll.

Well, this was a lovely YA surprise. If I was to recommend this book to somebody I would say if you like Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey series, then you would be digging this series. They are not the same, but I feel they are book cousins.

Dylan, seventeen years old, is a bit of a lost character. His mum is only thirty three years old, she hasn’t been the best mum. She is a little broken. You will find out why the more you read.

Dylan doesn’t fit in. He has dreamed ever since he can remember about a girl.

That would be Kera.

This is a story about two realms colliding. Dylan’s modern world and Kera’s world, separated by a wall that only certain people can see. What lies on Kera’s side is danger and an evil would be king named Navar out to destroy those who are not firsts.

To those who looked, he was a lord in waiting. A king in the making. A conqueror in the flesh. Only she saw him for what he truly was.

A danger to all.

What lies on Dylan’s side is a new found family he has been dropped into, to be promptly abandoned by his mother. Grandpa is quite a character. I would love him as my grandpa. Grandma is not your typical granny. She is very astute and very quickly the trio bond.

“George,” Grandma says in a firm voice. She doesn’t look at me, but directs her words my way. “What your grandpa means is that he would like you to go out with him and the sheep.”

The devil in me flares to life. “Really, Grandma. I only go out with girls.”

Grandpa coughs on his milk, and I find it hard not to laugh, too.

A far-off voice calls, “Is he okay, George?”

Grandpa turns the water off, his eyes on me.

I’m shivering like a newborn puppy, and I clench my teeth to stop their chattering. “That was messed up!”

He throws a relieved glance over his shoulder. “That fixed him.”

“What’s going on?” I say.

Grandpa hauls me to my feet. “You needed a little jolt. You know, a kick start. Seen it a million times in Nam.”

“S-seen what?”

“Shock.”

Enter Leo and Jason, Pop and Reggie. Leo is a great character, very intelligent with some of those scientific things he was pulling out.

“Magical flying lights and a ghost. It’s been a busy night for you.”

“You have no idea.”

Leo sighs, then slowly begins to nod until his head is bobbing with hope. He claps his hands, the echo of the sound fading into the trees, and grins. “Why not? Okay! Let’s do this.”

“Hang on, little mama.” He grabs hold of the nearest limb and starts to climb. “Daddy’s coming to get you.”

“Seriously, dude,” I mutter under my breath, “you need to get a girl.”

Jason, man mountain, has a painful hidden side, but he is quite the lad. Very funny dialogue.

Jason’s voice lowers into a movie trailer commentator, rumbling intensely. “A young man struggles to belong in a world not made for him. A mysterious female calls from anoth—”

“Shut up, Jason,” Leo snaps. “This is serious.”

“Just trying to lighten the mood,” Jason says.

“I get that the plan’s changed,” Jason finally says. “That something odd is going down, but this isn’t going to stop. We’ve got to grab the girl and take out the bad guy, Chuck Norris style.”

Dylan finds out why he wasn’t really fitting in on his side of the wall. His new buds get tangled up in a mission to save the girl that Dylan has always loved in his dreams.

Dylan learns quickly what he is capable of. Kera is at the mercy of the villain of this story and her father isn’t really much help.

I liked that Kera was an intelligent character and she was a go getter.

“Why is an adventurous nature cheered on in men, but stifled in women by yards of fabric?”

Faldon chuckled, but didn’t lift his head from his reading. “No man wants to marry a woman more manly than he.”

Shea brings a bunch of fanatsy creatures into her storyline , pux, millispits, two headed wolves, gryphons.... and Dylan and his buds must face off against Navar and his minions all for the love of Kera.

We read this story from both Kera and Dylan’s pov’s which I enjoyed.

Dylan quickly found friends he could trust and they believed in him, not something he was used to in life. For better or for worse these guys came to Dylan in his hour of need.

I really like Bodog. He is a cool little guy. He really is the guy that saved the day, without his knowledge and help, it was looking like a bust. He kinda rocks.

I enjoyed Shea’s first installment in her series. Dylan is a very likable character, and Kera is no damsel in distress. Bodog adds the wise little Yoda type sub character and the other sub characters bring humor in the fight for freedom.

A fast paced , page turner, with some twists thrown in to keep us on our toes.

An unexpected ending which I am keen to know more about.

Synopsis

Dylan finally feels like he has it all. He's back home in the human realm with his beautiful girlfriend, loving grandparents, and some crazy powers over the elements. But Dylan's temper is climbing out of control, and along with the bursts of rage come new powers he wasn't expecting.

Kera has these new powers, too. She's seen them before and knows what they can do if kept unchecked…and it’s not pretty. Plus, going back to her home realm, Teag, would hasten the process. Kera is determined to keep her one true love, Dylan, safe on Earth, but when the barrier between the human realm and Teag weakens, allowing monster-like creatures to pass over, Kera becomes desperate to protect her home.

When Kera is kidnapped and imprisoned in a corner of her world that no one has ever escaped from alive, can Dylan overcome his unbridled powers—and himself—to save her?

4.5 STAR BOOK REVIEW - THE PECULIAR by STEFAN BACHMANN

THE PECULIAR
by
STEFAN BACHMANN

Publisher:  HarperCollins
Pages:  Paperback, 384
Acquired: Rcvd from publisher for honest review

RATING:  4.5 CHANGELING STARS!

Goodreads Description:
Don't get yourself noticed and you won't get yourself hanged.

In the faery slums of Bath, Bartholomew Kettle and his sister Hettie live by these words. Bartholomew and Hettie are changelings--Peculiars--and neither faeries nor humans want anything to do with them.

One day a mysterious lady in a plum-colored dress comes gliding down Old Crow Alley. Bartholomew watches her through his window. Who is she? What does she want? And when Bartholomew witnesses the lady whisking away, in a whirling ring of feathers, the boy who lives across the alley--Bartholomew forgets the rules and gets himself noticed.

First he's noticed by the lady in plum herself, then by something darkly magical and mysterious, by Jack Box and the Raggedy Man, by the powerful Mr. Lickerish . . . and by Arthur Jelliby, a young man trying to slip through the world unnoticed, too, and who, against all odds, offers Bartholomew friendship and a way to belong.

Part murder mystery, part gothic fantasy, part steampunk adventure, The Peculiar is Stefan Bachmann's riveting, inventive, and unforgettable debut novel.

MARISSA'S REVIEW:
If you disregard the age of Stefan Bachmann when he first wrote The Peculiar, you will find that The Peculiar is book for most ages filled with an amazing world of a dark and dirty Bath, England where fae are thwarted and the mixbreed changelings are killed for....well for just being changelings!

Now.....put back into the equation, the fact that Stefan Bachmann was infact only 16 years old when he wrote The Peculiar....the mind starts to boggle with amazement.

Admittedly, the first couple of chapters had my head a little dazed. The beginning few chapters chopped between the characters of Bartholomew Kettle and Mr Arthur Jelliby.  With no direct character incluson in the chapter title I felt I was jumping too much - maybe I'd just been spoilt by authors stating the obvious for me!  Saying that, once I fell into the story I didnt notice!

Aimed at a middle grade audience, I do feel that many in that group will find some of it above their general knowledge level.  Hell....I have a fairly normal adult grasp on the English language and I got stuck a couple of times!!

Back to the story........
The fae in this book have entered the human world - and it all went wrong. They are now being kept in the human world that not only doesn't want them there.....but won't let them go back to their world either.  Somewhere along the way some Fae and humans became involved (secretly) and the resulting effect were changelings - Peculiars.  Barty and his sister Hettie are two such products.  What makes a Peculiar different from normal children? Well, Hettie has tree branches growing from her head instead of hair!!

Barty witnesses a kidnapping one day.....and if being a Peciluar wasn't dangerous enough - he now has this to add to his problems. And the danger will come for Hettie as well.

Barty partners up with an odd parliamentarian, Arthur Jelliby.  Fairly non-descript and non eventful human by everyone's standards.  The two form an alliance and........ well you can just get the book and read it!!!!

It's a dark Steampunk/Fantasy where you can feel the bitter and twistedness of the society. And it's good!!

ENJOY!
