BOOK REVIEW - TEMPTATION'S KISS by MICHELLE ZINK - THE SHADOWGUARD # 2 - NOVELLA - SWOON BOOKS - 4.5 LILY & KANE SITTING IN A TREE K.I.S.S.I.N.G STARS!

By: Michelle Zink
Published By: Swoon Books
Released : Available Now
Details : Kindle, 43 Pages

RATING : 4.5 Lily & Kane Sitting In A Tree K.I.S.S.I.N.G stars!

Blurb: Goodreads

Lily Montgomery is perfectly happy taking care of everyone else. That is, until her friendship with Shadowguard warrior, Kane Dawson, begins to blossom into something more.

But Lily has a secret. One that will keep her from ever making her feelings known to Kane.
One of the Shadowguard’s fiercest warriors, Kane has a soft spot for Lily. A long-standing member of the Shadowguard, he can’t figure out when his feelings for Ambrose Montgomery’s youngest daughter morphed from brotherly affection into desire and an unfamiliar longing that feels a lot like love.

Kane holds himself in check knowing that Lily deserves better. A man in a suit, dinner at six every night, rosy-cheeked children who won’t have to worry that their father might be killed by one of the Legion’s wraiths.

But when the pair are thrown together by a set of circumstances beyond their control, they are forced to confront their growing passion and decide if love is worth the risk of baring it all.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I think everybody is going to say they loved Lily’s story more than Temptation’s Heat.

Lily and Kane are just adorable. I really dig Lily. I get her. There is a reason why she is such a homebody, a caring nurturing type character. I love how she has a spicy side to her. She is this quiet reserved sweetie pie and then.....

Go Tiger!!

She couldn’t take her eyes off his big hands as they lifted the spoon tohis mouth. Couldn’t stop imagining the feel of his palms on her skin, his fingers entwined in her hair. When he took a drink of water, she wanted to lick the moisture from his lips, plunge her tongue into the cool depths of his mouth.

Big muscled Kane is a beautiful character, shy and unsure of himself around Lily, but a confident fighter in his world.

Ivan, I think he may be a misunderstood character at first glance.

Ivan nodded. “It’s pretty simple; Lily deserves to be happy. If you hurt her, I’ll kick your ass.”

And did you have this same little chat with Rowen Black when he started dating Scarlet?”

Ivan laughed. “I didn’t have to. Scarlet would kick Rowen’s ass herself if the situation called for it.”

Kane grinned. Maybe Ivan wasn’t such a dick after all.

This is again a small novella, smaller than Temptation’s Heat , but I got a smexi romance out of it.

I have read two novella’s in this series now and this one took me nowhere but a stake out in regards to the Shadowguard and Blackguard, good vs evil in the human world. It was predominantly Lily and Kane’s romance.

I did feel like this book kind of cut off at the end. I would have liked possibly tacked onto the end a bit of action, or some movement with the forces of good and evil. Mikhail came to his demise, I would have thought there could have been something there.

It seems at this stage everything is rather peaceful from the demonic side, and hell smexi from the boys. They are getting their kit off and lovin’ their women.

I have really enjoyed both the novella’s and can’t help being grabby grabby for a longer story.

I feel like I am speed dating with these couples, yet it works .J

BOOK REVIEW - TEMPTATION'S HEAT by MICHELLE ZINK - THE SHADOWGUARD # 1 - NOVELLA - SWOON BOOKS - 4 ROWEN RAWRRRR STARS!!

By: Michelle Zink
Published By: Swoon Romance
Released : Available Now
Details: Kindle, 61 Pages

RATING : 4 ROWEN RAWRRRR! STARS

Blurb: Goodreads

NY Times and USA Today best-selling author of LOSING IT, Cora Carmack says,"Before reading TEMPTATION'S HEAT, I wouldn't have thought it possible to create a paranormal romance with great characterization, interesting relationships, and strong world-building in only seventy pages. I'm happy to say Michelle Zink definitely proved me wrong! Scarlet was the ultimate kick-ass heroine. Rowen Black was nothing short of sinful, and I am so relieved that the Shadowguard world is continuing as a series. To put it simply: Worth. Every. Penny."

When Rowen Black is assigned to the elite unit of angelic assassins known as the Shadowguard, he thinks his biggest challenge will be overcoming his less-than-stellar reputation. But that’s before he meets his match in Scarlet Montgomery.

Beautiful, strong, and with a temper to match Rowen’s own, Scarlet is focused on the Shadowguard and her possible future as its leader. She’s become an expert at keeping her personal life separate from the Guard, all too aware that as the boss’s daughter, fellow warriors see her not as someone to be respected, but as someone to be protected.

Avoiding entanglements gets a lot harder when Rowen saunters into the room. Rowen puts the bad in "bad boy." Their connection is hot, visceral, and instantaneous.

When the pair are assigned to a joint investigation, they come face-to-face with their undeniable attraction, forcing Scarlet to consider that the connection is not only physical, but a destiny written in the halls of time.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I want to start by saying The Shadowguard series is a set of novellas. This book was around 61 pages long. I could have kept reading.... easily.

This is an introduction to the world Michelle is opening up to us and a romance thrown in with the gorgeous muscled Shadowguard Rowen Black and Scarlet ,the daughter of Ambrose Montgomery.

A treaty is in effect, the balance between forces of good and evil. Now we always like the forces of good and evil, because evil always has a way of raising its nasty head and causing trouble.

The Shadowguard Security Services LLC resides in a gothic mansion in Clifton.

Shadowguards are Angelic descendants tasked with addressing potential threats from the demons of the Legion Blackguards.

They have cool weapons and know how to handle themselves.
Rowen is a bit of a hot head and he finds himself even a bit hotter under the collar with Scarlet.

* waggles eyebrows *
Lily is Scarlet’s younger sister and a real sweetie pie. The girl bakes and Rowen has a soft spot for her, the kitchen is her domain.

Ivan is the half brother, adopted by Ambrose. He has some issues.

I really enjoyed this little novella, I must admit I would have liked it at least double the size it was, it felt short, too short.

*pouts*  I wanted more!!

Michelle gets to the point, the romance gets to the point and it is     * fans oneself * smexi J

The Shadowguard series is a modern , adult version of the world in Michelle's YA , ' A Temptation of Angels.'

FAVE QUOTES:

He'd accepted the truth a long time ago; he was broken, defective, completely lacking the gene that required love and companionship.

"Why would he do that?" Scarlet asked.
He looked at her like she was a few weapons short of a full arsenal. "Because I hurt you."

Rowen's had jerked up as Scarlet rose, her reluctance obvious. He wanted to be pissed after the way she'd treated him in the training room, but his eyes were a slave to every slow, sensuous step she took across the room.

A Temptation of Angels

Even angels make mistakes in this page-turning epic romance

When her parents are murdered before her eyes, sixteen-year-old Helen Cartwright finds herself launched into an underground London where a mysterious organization called the Dictata controls the balance of good and evil. Helen learns that she is one of three remaining angelic descendants charged with protecting the world's past, present, and future. Unbeknownst to her, she has been trained her whole life to accept this responsibility. Now, as she finds herself torn between the angelic brothers protecting her and the devastatingly handsome childhood friend who wants to destroy her, she must prepare to be brave, to be hunted, and above all to be strong, because temptation will be hard to resist, even for an angel.

Michelle Zink masterfully weaves historical fantasy with paranormal romance to create a gripping tale of love and betrayal.

Michelle Zink talks to Talk Supe WRITER WRANGLER - MICHELLE ZINK - TALK SUPE  about this set of novellas. Worth a read to hear what Michelle has to say.

Another one of Michelle's books I am looking forward to is , 'This Wicked Game.' The cover was revealed a few days ago. I love the way she is looking through what looks like wrought iron.

A TEMPTATION OF ANGELS
Due for release March 20, 2012

Even angels make mistakes in this page-turning epic romance…
When her parents are murdered before her eyes, sixteen-year-old Helen Cartwright finds herself launched into an underground London where a mysterious organization called the Dictata controls the balance of good and evil. Helen learns that she is one of three remaining angelic descendants charged with protecting the world’s past, present, and future.

CHAPTER ONE
Though it was late, it was not the sound of arguing that woke Helen in the dead of night.

She lay in bed for a long time after retiring, listening to the rise and fall of voices coming from the library. It was a familiar sound, comforting rather than worrisome. Her mother and father often met with the others, though the meetings had become more frequent and heated of late. Yet, there was something about this night, the cadence of these voices— however familiar—that made Helen’s nerves tingle, as if they were humming too close to the surface of her skin.

At first, she tried to decipher the words drifting through the vents set into the floor of her chambers, especially when they sounded in her father’s familiar baritone or the strong, clear voice of her mother. But after a while, Helen gave up, opting instead to let her mind wander as she stared at the canopy above her head.

Her thoughts settled on the morning’s fencing exercises and her argument with Father. It was not the first time she had rebelled against the recent addition to her curriculum. She still failed to see how fencing could contribute anything to her schooling, but Father’s word was law when it came to her education. He knew well that Helen’s prowess lay in the strategy of chess, in the logic problems and cryptographs she could solve faster than he, not in the agile movement required of her on the ballroom floor where they practiced fencing.
Still, he pushed. Using the foil out of deference to her inexperience was his only concession. Were Father working with one of his usual sparring partners, he would, without question, have used his saber. Now, in the muffled quiet of her bedchamber, Helen vowed that in time Father would use a saber with her as well.

She didn’t remember slipping into the emptiness of sleep, and she did not awaken gently. It was the sound of hurried footsteps down the hall that caused her to sit up in bed, her heart racing. She did not have time to contemplate the possibilities before the door was thrown open, candlelight from the sconces in the hall throwing strange shadows across the walls and floor of her sleeping chamber.

Scooting to the headboard, she pulled the coverlet to her chin, too frightened to be ashamed for her childish behavior.

“You must get out of bed, Helen. Now.”

The voice was her mother’s. She moved into the darkness of the room, the strange shadows disappearing as she crossed to the dressing table. She fumbled with something—the glass jars and scent decanters atop the vanity clinking noisily together.

“But . . . it’s the middle of the night!”

Her mother turned then, and a shaft of light from the hall illuminated the valise in her hand. The realization that her mother was packing, packing Helen’s things, blew like a hurricane through the confusion of her mind. Her mother was across the room in seconds, leaning over the bed and speaking close to her face.

“You’re in grave danger, Helen.” Her mother pulled the coverlet from Helen’s shivering body. Her nightdress was twisted around her thighs, and the cold air bit her skin as her mother’s hand encircled her arm, already pulling her from the warmth of her bed. “Now, come.”

The carpets were cool under Helen’s bare feet as she was led to the wall next to the wardrobe. Her mother reached into the bodice of her gown, pulling from it a chain with something dangling at its end. It caught the light spilling in from the hall, glimmering faintly in the darkness as her mother removed it from her neck. Fear coiled like a snake in Helen’s stomach as her mother pushed aside the large mirror in the corner, bending
to the paneled wall behind it. She continued speaking as she worked something against the plaster.

“I know you won’t understand. Not yet. But someday you will, and until then you must trust me.”

Helen was oddly speechless. It was not that she had nothing to say. Nothing to ask. She simply had so many questions that they washed over her like waves, one right after the other. She had no time to formulate one before the next carried it away. She could not make out what her mother was doing, bent forward in the darkness, head tipped to the wall, but she listened as something scratched against the wallpaper. A moment later, her mother straightened, and a door swung outward, revealing a hole in the plaster.

Even in the dark, Helen saw tenderness in her mother’s eyes as she reached out, pulling Helen roughly against her body. In her mother’s hair, Helen smelled roses from the garden, and on the fine surface of her mother’s skin, the books to which her head was always bent. They were a memory all their own.

“Helen . . . Helen,” her mother murmured. “You must remember one thing.” She pulled back, looking into Helen’s eyes. “You know more than you think. Whatever else you discover, remember that.”

Voices erupted from downstairs, and though the words themselves were indistinct, it was obvious they were spoken in anger or fear. Her mother dared a glance at the door before turning back to Helen with renewed fervor.

“Take this.” She thrust a piece of crumpled paper into Helen’s hand. “Take it and sit very quietly, until you know they’re gone. There is a stair that will lead you beneath the house and back up again farther down the road. Join with Darius and Griffin. The address is here. They will take you to Galizur. You have everything you need, but you must be silent as you make your escape. If they hear you, they will find you.” She paused,
forcing Helen’s chin up so that she was looking straight into her eyes. “And this is important, Helen: If they find you, they will kill you.”

“I won’t leave you!” Helen cried.

“Listen to me.” Her mother’s voice became firmer, almost angry as she grabbed hold of Helen’s shoulders. “You will do this, Helen. You will get out of here alive, whatever else happens. Otherwise, it’s all for nothing. Do you understand?”
Helen shook her head. “No! Mother, please tell me what’s happening!” But she already knew her mother would not. Already knew, somehow, that they were out of time.

Her mother lifted the chain from around her neck, placing it around Helen’s. A key at the end of it fell to the front of her nightdress.

Holding her daughter’s face between her hands, Helen’s mother leaned in to kiss her forehead. “Lock the door from the inside. Use the pendant to light your way—but don’t make a move until you are certain they won’t hear you. And be safe, my love.”

Helen was shoved into the hole in the wall, the valise pressed against her until she had no choice but to wrap her arms around it. She ducked, stumbling through the small doorway, trying not to smack her head. Her mother paused one last time, as if reconsidering, and then, without another word, she began to push the door closed. She became a smaller and smaller sliver, disappearing bit by bit until she was gone entirely in the small click of the door.

“Lock it, Helen. Now.” Her mother’s voice was a hiss from the other side of the wall. Helen fought a surge of panic as she heard the wallpaper smoothed over the keyhole, the mirror dragged over the opening to her hiding place.

It was worse than dark inside the wall. It was as if she had fallen into nothingness. She set the bag down, feeling for its clasp in the darkness. She had no idea what was on the piece of paper her mother had given her, but it was damp with the sweat of her palm. She couldn’t read it now if she wanted to, and she pushed it inside the bag.

She reached for the chain around her neck until she found the key at its end. Grasping it in one hand, she fumbled around the edge of the wall in front of her with the other, trying to locate the lock she knew must be there. Her hands shook with rising panic. The door cut into the wall was almost seamless, making it nearly impossible to find in the darkness. She was on her third pass when she finally felt a slim line in the plaster.
Running her fingers slowly over it, she felt for the keyhole. It seemed like far too long before she finally came upon it.

She was trying to fit the key in the lock when noise burst from somewhere beyond the chamber. She could not fathom its direction, for she was wrapped in the muffled cocoon of wood and plaster that was her hiding place. Still, she strained to decipher the sound. She thought she heard shouting . . . weeping. And then a crash that caused her to startle. The key dropped from her hand, falling with a clink to the floor. She hesitated only a moment.

Whatever was happening was going to get worse before the night was over.

Feeling along the floor for the key, Helen tried to ignore the noise from the rest of the house. Her hiding place was not large, and it only took a few moments for her fingers to close around the chain attached to the key. She grasped it carefully in one hand and felt again for the keyhole. This time, it didn’t take long.

Using both hands, she lined the key up with the hole in a couple of tries, turning it quickly and scooting away from the hidden door until her back stopped against a solid block of wood. She had only a few moments, a few precious moments of silence, before she heard the thud of boot steps.

At first the footfalls were distant. Helen thought they would pass her chamber completely, but it wasn’t long before they grew louder and louder and she knew they were inside her room. She had a flash of hope. Hope that it was Father coming to get her. To tell her that whatever danger had been in the house had gone. But she knew it wasn’t him when the boot steps slowed. There was no rush to the door of her tiny room to free her from its darkness.

Instead, the footsteps made a slow pass of her chamber before stopping suddenly in front of the hiding place.

Helen tried to slow her shallow breathing as she waited for the footsteps to move away, but they didn’t. Whoever had entered her chamber was still there. She held as still as possible, attempting to calm her mind with the knowledge that she had spent many hours in the room, and there had never been any hint of the secret door, even during times of bright sunlight. Surely this stranger would not be able to see the opening in the dark of night and with her great dressing mirror pushed in front of it.

For a few seconds, it worked. She began to breathe a little easier in the silence.

But that was before the room outside exploded into riotous noise. Before she heard the dressing table cleared of its bottles and jars, the glass thudding against the carpets and shattering against the wood floorboards. Before she heard the bureau overturned, the armoire pushed over. And yes, before she heard the heavy carved mirror guarding her hiding place tipped to the floor, the glass shattering into a million pieces.

BY GUEST REVIEWER CAROLYN

BOOK REVIEW:

This is a book of short stories of paranormal romance by some well known authors. Each story is only about 20-49 pages long so is a great book for filling in time between books you have read and may be waiting for. This is why I started reading it. I was waiting for Fire to arrive after reading Graceling and didn’t want to start another book in case Fire arrived. I didn’t read this book in order but chose the stories by the authors I knew first then read the others randomly. I do like these books as you get a taste of what different authors writing styles are like. As a result of reading this and 'The Eternal Kiss' previously, I am now interested in reading some of the authors other work.

DUNGEONS OF LANGEAIS by Becca Fitzpatrick (24 pages)

This is the story of Chauncey who appears in Becca’s book 'Hush, Hush'. Anyone who has read that book will know who Chauncey is. The “Dark Angel” is mentioned throughout and this is about Chauncey’s hatred of said angel. He is never mentioned by name but we all know who it is. It did not change my opinion of Chauncey. I still don’t like him but now understand his motives towards Nora in 'Hush, Hush' and the “Dark Angel”, well somethings never change.

HARE MOON by Carrie Ryan (30 pages)

This story is about Sister Tabitha from Carrie Ryan’s book , 'The Forest of Hands and Teeth' (TFOHT) so I guess it is a backstory. At the beginning I felt sorry for the young Tabitha. She wants to know what is outside the fences and her parents don’t treat her very nicely. However by the end of it, I just went back to my original thoughts of her from TFOHT. She is just plain mean and nasty. I just can’t understand why she did what she did but can now understand her attitude towards Mary in TFOHT. She can see herself as a young girl in Mary and is jealous of her.

THE HOUNDS OF ULSTER by Maggie Stiefvater (20 pages)

I didn’t see the POW coming in this one. It was a bit of a weird short story, kept going back and forth and all over the place for the first few pages, then settled down into a really good story. It was interesting and I really wanted to know who “THEY” were. The main character wouldn’t name them but, wow,  I was surprised when I found out. I have read Maggie’s books 'Shiver' and 'Linger',  but haven’t yet read 'Lament' or 'Ballad' and she certainly likes to centre her characters around music.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS by Daniel Waters (26 pages)

This story was just plain weird. It starts off with 5 teenagers from a small town in a car crash. 3 of the boys and 1 girl die and the other girl survives but is in a coma. The parents all go to a counselling session where the counsellor tells them what to expect when if or when their children “return”. Apparently in this and surrounding towns when people die they quite often return within 7 days. The families are not allowed to bury the bodies of their loved ones before the 7 days is up. This is told from the point of view of Cal the local police officer. His daughter Mandy died in the crash, and it follows him for the 7 days after the crash. As I said before, just plain weird.

THE ASSASSIN’S APPRENTICE by Michelle Zink (22 pages)

When reading this I was thinking not another story about descendants of angels which is what this is about. Rose’s family are descendants of angels and have been killed by a demon named Bael and now she is planning on killing him herself. Enter Asher, an apprentice assassin sent to protect Rose and kill Bael. There is a bit of smexual tension between the two as they try to work together.

ERRANT by Diana Peterfreund (33 pages)

Errant ,  is set several centuries ago in France and is about a nun that is also a unicorn hunter. She and her unicorn named Enyo. They are sent to train a young lady named Elise for a hunting ritual that is to be held as part of the Elise’s wedding festivities. Her family has the Unicorn hunting blood in their veins meaning that they can call unicorns with their minds. It was quite a good story, a little bit hard to follow early but ended quite well.

THE SPIRIT JAR by Karen Mahoney (45 pages)

This is the second story about Marie O’Neil or 'Moth' as she is referred to. The first story about 'Moth',  the eternal 18 year old vampire , I first read about in ,  'The Eternal Kiss'.  In this story, Theo her creator has sent her to London to retrieve an ancient magical book from an obscure occult bookshop. She meets Adam, then they have an adventure involving a spirit.

LOST by Justine Musk (22 pages)

Sasha is a girl who has the ability to find things that are lost. Her best friend Josh is in a coma after a terrible car accident three weeks before and now she is feeling lost herself. She has the urge to go to the big white abandoned house up on the hill and there she finds Haiden.

This was really interesting and completely different to what I thought it would be about and the ending was totally surprising. I am sure anyone reading it will make a comparison to something that I cannot name without giving away the plot.

THE SPY WHO NEVER GREW UP by Sarah Rees Brennan (27 pages)

A boy is hired as a Super Spy for Her Majesty the Queen of England’s secret service. Judging from the title, it is the story of ........  All he asks for in payment is a mother. There is actually quite a bit of humour in this story.  There are a few adult type comments in there for us “older” readers, and I really liked it. I do wonder if there is a little boy who doesn't want to grow up in a lot of the secret service agents . They do like to play with the “big boy” toys.

BEHIND THE RED DOOR by Caitlin Kittredge (39 pages)

Jo, is a teenage girl who decides to enter an abandoned property called Ash House. When she enters she sees the ghost of a young man and then starts having nightmares about the house.  This story has everything, smoking, drug taking, drinking, lesbian relationship. Not your typical YA short story but interesting nonetheless.

FAMILIAR by Michelle Rowen (32 pages)

Brenda is a teenage witch-in-training that has to pick a familiar. A familiar is a witch’s pet, such as a cat, bat, snake, ferret or rat. Brenda picks a scrawny half-dead looking runt of a kitten with a rhinestone collar on.  I liked this story it was different to the other stories it was a good short story. Would be interested to read some of Michelle Rowen’s other books.

FEARLESS by Rachel Vincent (48 pages)

Sabine, a fifteen year old girl who is in trouble with the law,  has no family, has been living in foster care but got into trouble with a baseball bat and somebody’s car. She is sent to Holser House after breaking her probation curfew by staying out all night. It is a halfway house for wayward teenage girls. If she messes up again she will be going to Juvenile Detention. It was very interesting read and different from the others about witches, vampires, werewolves etc. Kind of ended a bit abruptly though.

VERMILLION by Daniel Marks (49 pages)

This is about a place called Vermillion which is in Purgatory. Velvet and her boyfriend Nick are asked to accompany Aime to hunt down a ghost that is haunting the living.  It was quite interesting to look at things from the ghosts point of view, however I did feel that it was a little bit too long. Probably could have cut around 10 pages out of it and it still would have been good. I did like it although the ending was pretty obvious.
