EVERY LAST BREATH Synopsis:

Some loves will last ‘til your dying breath

Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.

Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…

EVERY LAST BREATH
 Excerpt

Roth cleared his throat. “Shortie, look…look at your hand.”
Look at my hand? Why in the world would he be asking me to do that in the midst of all the cray?
“Do it,” he said quietly and too gently.
The dread exploded in my gut like buckshot, and my gaze dropped to my left hand. I expected to see the weird marbling of black and gray, a mixture of the demon and Warden that existed inside of me and a combination I’d become almost familiar with by now. My nails had lengthened and sharpened, and I could tell they were hard enough to cut through steel, as hard as my skin, but my skin…it was still pink. Really pink.
“What the…?” My gaze traveled to my other hand. It was the same. Just pink. My wings twitched, reminding me that I had shifted.
Zayne swallowed. “Your…your wings…”
“What about my wings?” I almost screeched, reaching be‑ hind me. “Are they broken? Did they not come out—” The tips of my fingers came into contact with something as soft as silk. My hand jerked back. “What…”
Stacey’s watery eyes had doubled in size. “Um, Layla, there’s a mirror above the fireplace. I think you need to look in it.”
I met Roth’s gaze for a second before I spun around and all but ran to the fireplace I was sure Stacey’s mom had never used. Clutching the white mantel, I stared at my reflection.
I looked normal, like I did before I shifted…like I was going to class or something. My eyes were the palest shade of gray, a watered-down blue. My hair was so blond it was almost white, and a mess of waves that went in every direction like usual. I looked like a colorless china doll, which was nothing new, except for the two fangs jutting out of my mouth. I wouldn’t show them off at school, but that wasn’t what caught my attention and held it.
It was my wings.
They were large, not as massive as Zayne’s or Roth’s, and normally they were almost leathery in texture, but now they were black…black and feathered. Like legit feathered. That soft, silky thing I’d felt? It had been tiny feathers.
Feathers.
“Oh my God,” I whispered at my reflection. “I have feathers.”
“Those are definitely feathered wings,” Roth commented.
I whipped around, knocking over a lamp with my feathered right wing. “I have feathers on my wings!”
Roth cocked his head to the side. “Yeah, you do.”
He was absolutely no help, so I turned to Zayne. “Why do I have feathers on my wings?”
Zayne shook his head slowly. “I don’t know, Layla. I’ve never seen anything like this.”

“Liar,” hissed Roth, shooting him a dark look. “You’ve seen that before. So have I.”

Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining the balance between good and evil. He was her everything…right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn't help that Jas's father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.

And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again…

"With her signature flare for combining humor, romance and action, Armentrout weaves a fast-paced read that will have readers' hearts racing in more ways than one. Like Armentrout's previous heroines, Jasmine is fun and full of attitude, while Dez is as snarky as he is sexy. This is a must read for new and old fans alike!" -RT Book Reviews

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Oh dear lord! What am I gonna do?

Team Roth...yes, please!

Team Zayne...yes, please!

Gahhhh!!!

Bad boy vs good boy.

So freakin’ hard!

I am see sawing, flip flopping.

My heart says Roth but I love Zayne too.

COME ON!! JENNIFER!!

*face plant *

It’s so difficult to choose a team. I can’t even join their names together and come up with ZATH or ROYNE. Just doesn’t work.

Poor Layla has Abbott against her and shiz is going down around her. I was thinking one thing and then ...

OMG that ending!!

That twist!

I didn’t piece it. I thought something but didn’t think THAT!!

I sniffed something out, but, OMG that ending!

I LOVED this instalment, I’m all grabby, grabby for Every Last Breath... I mean I have to work out my Team guy.

I can’t help thinking Jennifer has Danika hanging about for a reason. I mean she didn’t do much in this book she’s just floating about, waiting to be used.

I really loved a particular scene in this book. Roth takes Layla on a walk on the wild side and visually it played through my mind in a creepy, goth kinda way.

LOVED IT!!

Roth you keep surprising me with what is underneath all that Brimstone and Zayne, dang, I hope, I mean I HOPE you ...

Well, I can’t say.

I love a book that gets me a bit GAHHH when it comes to two male characters. I can usually just get my guy and be done with it and moon over him for the rest of the book/series, but this series...

Pluck-A-Duck Jennifer!!!

I know I have overused my exclamation marks but just go with the flow, people.

This middle book has me a bit twisted in knots.

Anyhoo, go grab this most AWESOME YA series of Jennifer’s and bathe in Roth and Zayne. I have my theory now of what may happen with this love tango.

I shall wait and see if I am right. Either way my heart will have a bit broken off for the one that doesn’t get Layla.

Anyone for a Roth and Zayne sandwich?

Either way I got 7 months to wait!

Bugger!

  EXCERPT:

I’d remained in bed after that, trying to sort through the odd tingling in my chest. There was a slight smile on my lips, because Zayne…well, he’d made my day, but then I’d remember what Roth had said to me the night before and the smile would wash away as if it had never been there.

I probably needed to get used to the whiplash mood swings.

It wasn’t until after dinner that I decided to scrub a day’s worth of gunk off myself.Gingerly, I peeled the bandage off, happy to find that the cut in my arm was healing as expected. I didn’t need to cover it anymore. The arm was still tender, but the Warden blood in me was quickly undoing the damage from the iron.

After changing into fresh pj’s, like a total hermit, I padded over to my desk, where I’d left my cell phone. It had been on silent all day and when I tapped the screen, I wasn’t surprised to see a slew of texts from Stacey.

Where r u?

R u skipping, u ho?

A minute later: Your locker misses u. Guess u sick with the herp?

Oh my God. I laughed out loud, grinning as I thumbed through her texts. Our bio sub is still hot. U r missing this.

Bio is lonely.

My boobs miss u. How weird is that?

That was notably weird and yet not surprising.

If I get my cell taken from me, it’s ur fault.

Holy shit, Layla, where r u?!?

Air punched out of my lungs as I read the next text and the several following them.

U have no idea who just walked into bio!!!

Roth is here!

Holy Canola oil, why aren’t u here to witness this?

Ok. He says he had mono. Srlsy? Do people still get mono? And who in the duck was he kissing? A second later—Duck? I didn’t mean duck. That’s SO not what I meant, autocorrect.

Another text had come in about fifteen minutes after the last one. He asked where u were. I told him u joined a cult. I laughed. He didn’t.

Finally, the last text was to call her if I wasn’t dead.

“What in the Hell?” I tossed my cell onto the bed, mouth hanging open.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Loved this book.

Well, hello Zayne and Roth.

Where one is blonde and fights the good fight as a Warden, the other is dark haired and , well, his boss is the big guy downstairs in Hell. He is an Upper Level Demon.

Fresh out of the shower, Zayne tugged a plain black T-shirt on over his head. Not quick enough that I missed a tantalizing glimpse of abs. Rigorous training kept his body chiseled and rock hard. I dragged my gaze up when the stretch of skin disappeared. Damp sandy hair clung to his neck and sculpted cheeks. His features would be too perfect if it weren’t for those watered-down blue eyes all Wardens had.

The newcomer stood well over six feet, as tall as any Warden. His hair was dark, the color of obsidian, and it reflected blue in the dim light. Lazy locks slipped over his forehead and curled just below his ears. Brows arched over golden eyes and his cheekbones were broad and high. He was attractive. Very attractive. Mind-bendingly beautiful, actually, but the sardonic twist of his full lips chilled his beauty. The black T-shirt stretched across his chest and flat stomach. A huge tattoo of a snake curled around his forearm, the tail disappearing under his sleeve and the diamond-shaped head rested on the top of his hand. Total crush material - if it wasn’t for the fact that he had no soul.

Roth was such a stand out lad in this book. He has humor and wit about him. He is the bad boy, but he has good in him, for Layla, anyway.

Roth caught my hand, pulling me around a cluster of tourists with fanny packs. “One of these days I’m going to buy one of those.”

The laugh came out before I could squelch it. “You’d look real sexy in a fanny pack.”

His smile warmed his face - warmed me. “I’d look sexy in just about anything.”

“You really aren’t that bad...for a demon, you know.”

“I wouldn’t go that far.” He stretched out beside me, propping himself up on his elbow. “They don’t come any badder than me.”

Layla has just turned seventeen and she is half demon and half Warden. Abbott rescued her from a home and she has been raised a Warden for the past ten years.

This is where things get complicated. Layla tags souls for the Wardens, who are gargoyles, by night they take down the demons that Layla tags in her spare time.

She is half demon, so she is sending her own to death. She has almost been brain washed by Abbott to do his bidding. He cares for her, but she is still not a full Warden. She has rules she must abide. There are others in the clan that do not like Layla.

Petr needed a stinky dead fish slap from me.

Living with Wardens and doing what she is told is all well and good when you are a young girl, but then Roth enters her life and he becomes her secret. He also enlightens her on some facts.

Trust from her family of Wardens becomes a big issue for both parties.

“There’s sweetness in evil, he said. “And remember, looks can be deceiving.”

I liked Zayne in this story, but he was also off doing his own thing, to come back into the story and be the friend she needs, to then take off and do his thing again. Jennifer throws us the female sub character who hangs around Zayne making Layla upset and a little jealous.

Roth is all too willing to take her mind off Zayne. We are all too willing to let him. He is such a smexi lad who has a most brilliant familiar named Bambi.

Love Bambi.

The next book is going to be where I get to see Zayne shine more, titled Stone Cold Touch. Naturally, we as the reader will be thrown into utter love triangle drama, I predict.

At the moment I am Team Roth as we got so much of him in this book, he showed us that there is a good guy wearing a Hell T-shirt, but you can always take a T-shirt off and put another one on. But, in good YA paranormal romance, the tables will be changing with Zayne getting his time with Layla in the spotlight.

Or is this New Adult? I'm not sure. It appears YA genre.

I do like Zayne a lot, he is a really good guy, but, what can I say. I like a bad boy too. On the cover of White Hot Kiss, Layla and Roth are both getting ready to snog. On the cover of Stone Cold Touch, Layla is looking away from Zayne.

EEeeeeeppp!!

RATING: 5 LICKABLE DEZ STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

In a sizzling prequel novella to her new series THE DARK ELEMENTS, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout draws readers into the extraordinary, irresistible world of Wardens and demons.

Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining balance between good and evil. He was her everything...right until the moment he disappeared without a trace.

Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again...

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I loved this novella prequel read.

Loved it!

I am going to say, that I read it after White Hot Kiss # 1 in Dark Elements and I am glad I did, because there are some things in Bitter Sweet Love that I am glad I didn’t know about before reading White Hot Kiss. Just little things, but I think if I had known them it would have taken away from some of the Roth, Layla and Zayne stuff in White Hot Kiss, for me personally.

I do know this one was released first, but ... I am just glad I read them out of order.

Dez is such a gorgeous lad. I absolutely love him. I wonder what his longer version name is?

I can’t help thinking there has to be another novella read from Jasmine and Dez, once you know about White Hot Kiss. The end of this book seems a little sudden , like there could be more. That's what I think, anyway.

I would read about the space in time between these two books with these two characters.

I really like Jas, she has spunk.

I got to say when Dez kisses Jasmine...WOW!!!

His kisses are like sex.

I hear church choir singing, Hallelujah.

* fans one self *

This novella was essentially about two hearts reconnecting and Dez doing what he needed to do to win his love back.

I thought these two were romance on a stick. Very lickable.

Plus the odd demon or two pops up.

I think watching Zayne towards Layla in this book, has made me like Zayne even more. I was totally Team Roth in White Hot Kiss, because I think Jennifer gave me no choice, she left Zayne floating in and out.

But after reading this novella, I am like...gahhhh!! My heart is going to be crushed by one lad not making it into Layla’s HEA.

I am rather chomping at the bit for Stone Cold Touch.

A gorgeous prequel novella that will suck readers into Jennifer’s world of Wardens and Demons and a boy named Zayne and a boy named Roth.

She is sure to play with our hearts.
