BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Australian author, Penelope Louleas has made a smashing entrance with her debut novel, Harbour.

I really enjoyed meeting Harbour and her friends. Pierce is a bit of a fave of mine. He is both fairy godmother and loyal friend, to the core. I want me a Pierce.

“I like cock,” he whispered. I’d released my breath and laughed hysterically, so much so that people were staring. I’d finally stopped because my stomach was hurting.

“Me too.” I replied, even though I was completely inexperienced with them.

Pierce is the epitome of sexy. It’s like God spent a bit of extra time molding him perfectly, gave him this insanely sexy and charismatic personality, a great sense of humor, intelligence and then thought, I’ve made the perfect man. Women will fall all over themselves to be with him, so ha, ha, I’m going to make him attracted to men. Suck it, ladies!

Harbour is taking up a position in New York which allows her the freedom to flee from a creep who is her ex, in Australia. She grew a backbone and dumped the chump.

A masquerade ball leads to a kiss from a masked guy.

Enter Lincoln.

I got to say, I fell for Lincoln, hard. He is sexy, smart, he ticks the boxes a girl would dream of in a guy, but...

then...

Did I just smash a mirror?

I think, if I was to be honest, Lincoln did drop the ball and crushed me a fair bit. He's a character that I loved, so he kind of hurt my fictional feelings.

He knows he dropped the ball.

There were ways around it, but he did what he felt he had to do in the moment.

Guys.

I absolutely adore Lincoln’s family. They are solid people with a good heart.

This is a story about second chances, and a girl with a past that fell hard for a man that was qualified to be her future and villains who come in all shapes.

A sexy read, that flowed very well, the pages kept turning, I got knocked around a bit with my emotions like a rugby tackle.

I look forward to reading the second installment in this series.

Well done Penelope!

BLOG TOUR - BOOK REVIEW - THE RESURRECTION OF AUBREY MILLER by L.B. SIMMONS - NEW ADULT CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE - SELF PUBLISHED

By: L.B. Simmons
Published By: L.B. Simmons
Released : Available Now
Details: Mobi file for honest review,

RATING: 5 SOUL SEARCHING STARS

Blurb: Goodreads

***Standalone NA Romance with HEA***

Death.

For some, it’s simply one of life’s certainties, nothing more. For others, it’s merely a fleeting thought, one often overshadowed by the reckless delusion that they have been blessed with the gift of immortality.

For Aubrey Miller, death is the definition of her very existence. Overcome with the guilt resulting from the loss of her beloved family, she alters her appearance from the once beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed little girl to that of one shrouded in complete darkness, enveloping herself in her own unbreakable fortress of solitude as a form of protection for others.

As she enters her first year of college, her goal is simple: Earn a degree with the least amount of social interaction as possible. What she never anticipates is the formation of very unlikely relationships with two people who will change her life in ways she never believed possible: Quinn Matthews, the boisterous former pageant queen, and Kaeleb McMadden, a childhood friend from her past who never really let her go.

Over the years, as their connections intertwine and grow, a seemingly indestructible bond is formed between the three…

But when death painfully reemerges, Aubrey is lost once again, burying herself deeper than ever before inside the familiar fortification of her fears.

Will the refuge of friendship, the solidarity of life-long bonds, and the power of unconditional love be enough to do the impossible?

Will they be enough to finally bring about…

The Resurrection of Aubrey Miller?

****NA Contemporary Romance****

****WARNING - Due to the graphic nature of some scenes, this book is not recommended for those who are particularly sensitive to the death of a child and/or suicide and is intended for mature audiences only. Contains adult language and themes.****

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

This story spans the four years that Aubrey/Raven is at Titan University.

You will see her as both Raven and Aubrey Miller.

This is a story that is more than you can imagine from the blurb.

It is a story that will hurt your heart at times, it is inevitable you will be reaching for a tissue.

Aubrey/Raven is a character that has been so affected by the loss in her life, she blames herself. She is the bringer of death.

This she truly believes.

I have read many a damaged/broken character in my reading life, we watch the layers being peeled back and we watch them blossom.

Aubrey/Raven will show you layers that are not hidden from view. She will decorate herself in her layers. Her layers are deeper than some.

Deep black dye covers the top of an entire bottom layer of electric blue, fulfilling its purpose in concealing my naturally light blonde hair. The contacts in my eyes are completely white, with the exception of the black pointed ellipses right in the middle. A 16-gauge circular barbell crosses through the septum in my nose, the newest addition to my piercings. I run my tongue across the back of the tiny skull-shaped stud currently residing in my left dimple piercing, mirror image of the one on the right, while my fingertips graze the 12-gauge mini-curved barbell in my eyebrow on the same side. The sight of the skulls serves as a constant reminder of the permanent loss of my once beaming smile, its grave marked with silver.

... I look like a freak.

“That’s life I guess,” I answer with a shrug of my shoulders. “Unfortunately for the people around me, life tends to come with an extraordinarily short expiration date. Like milk.”

Enter Quinn. She is the bubbly character that is so bubbly , you are almost waiting for her bubbles to pop. She is a really great friend in this story. She sees beneath the decorations that Raven has adorned herself with.

She doesn’t judge.

Enter Kaeleb, Boarding Buddy to Quinn.

Beautiful guy.

Funny guy.

Kaeleb’s forehead falls to my neck as his shoulders shake with laughter. “Well, that’s a first. I cock-blocked myself.”

Intelligent and endearing guy.

“As long as you continue to travel through life in this darkness, you will never know how beautiful your light truly shines when you let yourself love and be loved.”

Patient guy.

Smexi guy.

“Sunshine,” he says, scooting his body toward the end of my bed. “You need to get lost? You come to me. I’ll take you to places you never knew existed.”

He does not judge.

There is no love triangle in this book, it does not need it to tell this story. This story is about three friends and what lays underneath each of their layers.

There is of course the resident biaaatches, one in particular who you just wanna take down. I pass the skinky dead fish to you to slap her with.

This story keeps opening up and getting deeper.

It does have it’s humorous moments. The swear jar is there to lighten our reading mood. I think Palmer is too.

There are many hidden messages within this tale. A tale that is as much about coming of age as it is about not letting life bring you down.

Don’t blame yourself.

Shit happens.

Things happen you have no control over.

Terrible things.

Life can be a tough mouthful to swallow... sometimes.

When we are younger, we can let the comments of the insensitive stick to us like mud. We can take the comments and twist ourselves up inside and it can lead to deeper more traumatic emotions. Some of us need friends that will stand by us through the thick of it and help us to come out the other side.

Sometimes we need a push and a shove to help us get back on track.

And that is ok.

Staring upwards, I say a silent prayer that I’m doing the right thing... because I know better than anyone how consuming the idea of death can be.

Aubrey, Kaeleb and Quinn, all come with their own experience with life that has hurt them. They are three friends that need each other and are there for each other.

I am leaving out an awful lot when it comes to other sub characters because I want you to read it for yourselves.

The Resurrection Of Aubrey Miller will resonate deeply within its readership.

I could so see this book as a movie and watching Raven/Aubrey evolve... would be quite something.

I am not ashamed to admit I had some hard girlie cries in parts. The ugly cry surfaced. Although this story touches on some tough topics, it also has a lot of heart and it was a story I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

I think everybody can take something from this story.

Every being in this world makes an impact on at least one person they encounter during their lifetime. You can change the course of someone’s life by just a kind word, a hateful one, or even by simply choosing not to say anything at all. Every choice you make has the potential to create a ripple effect, trickling into and affecting the lives of others.

Life, your existence in this world, is indeed a very powerful thing. Truly a gift that you can give to others.

We spent another day walking around the city, taking in the Sacre-Cour Basilica, and Cathedral de Notre Dame, before finishing at the Opera Garnier Palace, or Paris Opera House, as it’s commonly called.

The Opera House was a magnificent sight, its sweeping staircases just as majestic as they were in my imagination. Cole spoke to one of the security guards before ushering me hastily into a roped-off area.

“What did you say to the guard to get us in?” I whispered excitedly. There were people walking past, and we quickly ducked around a corner so we couldn’t be seen.

“I told him my parents are patrons of the arts here in Paris. They have a permanent reservation for the box up there.” He pointed to a small box close to the stage that would seat possibly six people. “Would you like to see the view from up there?”

He led me up a back staircase, and across a foyer before we ducked under another rope, and through a heavy red velvet curtain.

The box had eight chairs in two rows of four, all red velvet to match the curtain that enclosed it. I went and sat in one of the seats in the front row, and leaned over the balcony. From up high, I could see the entire theatre, and all of the stage except for the very back corner.

“This is unbelievable,” I exclaimed. “Do you come to see operas, ballets, and concerts often when you’re in Paris?”

He shook his head as he sat beside me. “Not really. I’m usually here by myself, and I tend to spend my time in bars.”

“If I could come here whenever I wanted,” I fantasied, “I’d spend every night here, watching anything that was playing.”

One day I would come here to see a grand opera, but not this visit, we just didn’t have time.

He looked at me sheepishly. “You know what I’m like. I have different priorities when I’m here on my own.”

Hmm, I think we’ll leave it at that. Obviously there weren’t enough girls in Melbourne; he had to come to Paris to get laid, too.

“I wonder,” Cole muttered under his breath.

“What do you wonder?” I asked, curiously.

He stuck his head over the balcony edge again. There was only one couple walking through the theatre, and they looked like they were about to leave.

“Come with me.”

He grabbed my hand and led me back out through the red velvet curtain, along another passage and down another flight of stairs. For someone who didn’t spend much time here, he sure seemed to know where he was going.

“Wait there,” he instructed, before sticking his head around another corner.

I waited excitedly. Where were we going?

I couldn’t wait any longer. I tippy-toed up behind him, and tapped him on the shoulder.

He all but jumped out of his skin and spun around, clutching his chest.

I slapped my hand over my mouth, trying to muffle the laugh that was about to burst through. He looked at my face and started laughing, before biting his lip to shut himself up.

He was like a mischievous little boy, and he was thoroughly gorgeous with that cheeky grin and those shining emerald eyes.

Without thinking, I took his chin in my right hand and kissed him square on the lips. “You are adorable,” I told him, still laughing.

He stopped smiling, his eyes sweeping over my face, from my eyes down to my lips, then back up again. “So are you,” he replied hoarsely. “So are you.”

I bit my bottom lip, suddenly very aware that that was the first time we had ever kissed on the lips. It may have just been a quick innocent peck, but I could still taste him, still feel the warmth of his full soft lips, radiating through me.

He watched my mouth, the corner of his twitching into an almost-smile. He stuck his head back around the corner one more time, then led me out through the wings and onto the stage.

“Okay, Miss O’Connell, if you had only one chance to perform on this magnificent stage, what would you do?”

The possibilities ran through my head. The size of the stage made me want to dance some unrehearsed ballet, leaping and twirling around like a little kid. But I had the wrong shoes on, and the plaster on my wrist was cumbersome. I would probably pirouette and knock myself out.

Maybe sing? But what would I sing in the Opera Garnier Palace? Only one thing I could sing really, something from Phantom of the Opera. After all, this was the very theatre that the legend was built around.

“I would sing, Mr Michaels. Maybe, ‘Think of Me’, one of the arias from Phantom of the Opera.”

He swept his hand towards the front of the stage as if telling me to stand in the centre.

I laughed. “I can’t just start singing. We’ll be thrown out.”

“This could be your one and only chance to ever perform here, Tara. Live a little.” He nodded his head towards centre stage again. “Go on, off you go.”

I walked to centre stage, and looked over my shoulder at him for encouragement. By the time the security guards came I would be at least halfway through the aria.

I cleared my throat, and looked at him one more time. He moved to side of stage and leant up against the wall behind the thick curtain with his hands behind his back.

I pictured the scene in the movie where Christine sings for the first time. It was one of my favourite scenes, and every time I watched the DVD I skipped back to it, over and over again. I closed my eyes and I was there, as Christine was.

I started singing to the empty theatre. It didn’t matter if I was terrible. There was no one there but Cole and me, and it was a once in a lifetime experience.

As I was singing, a few tourists walked through. Some stood and listened, others actually took a seat. I don’t know what they made of it, some strange girl standing in the middle of the stage by herself, singing her lungs out. But when the aria was over they applauded, and I took a flying leap into Cole’s waiting arms.

Genre: Dark Romance

**AUTHOR NOTE - This is NOT a BDSM Romance**

Synopsis

We're thirteen girls, captive, slave to our master. A master we've never seen. Obedience will become all we know in our shallow existence. It is the only emotion we're permitted to feel. When we're bad, we're punished. When we're good, we're rewarded. Our scars run deep. Yet we survive, because we have to... because HE teaches us to. All of us are special, we feel it with everything we are. He has us for a reason, but it's a reason we don't know. We've never seen his face, but we know that something deeply broken lies beneath the darkness. With every touch, with every punishment, we know it. Then something changed. He showed me who he truly is. Now I want him. I'll go against everything I know to be with him.

A monster.

My monster.

Loving him is a sin, but a sinner I am. I won't stop until I see every part of him. Even the parts he keeps locked deep down inside.

I am Number Thirteen, and this is my story. No one said it was pretty, or right, but it's mine.

PROLOGUE

My boots crunch in the yellow autumn leaves as I walk towards the schoolyard. I didn’t want to come today, but Momma told me I had no choice. She said school is for smart kids, and if I don’t go, then how am I ever going to get smart? I could get smart, the man on the television tells me everything I need to know. But she claims that I can’t make friends with the man on the television, that the only way to make friends is to go to school. I could have told her that I don’t need friends to be successful, but she’d only tell me I’m being silly.

So I came to school.

I didn’t tell her that there are bullies here, or that every day they push me around and shove me into lockers. That would make me sound weak, and now that my dad is working, and my brother is away because he didn’t like the school here, I’ve had to become the man of the house. There’s no room for weakness.

Momma tells me bullies pick on the kids who are victims. I think she’s wrong. I’m not a victim; I’m just a kid. They pick on me because I’m different. I don’t look at the girls like they do; I don’t try to sneak out to parties. I’m only thirteen. I’m just there to learn, then I go home and I take care of my family, because, I’m the man of the house.

Like I said.

The shrill sound of the school bell ringing, tells me I’m late. I pick up into a jog, rounding the corner and into the schoolyard. It’s a cool winter day, and I have to pinch my coat together to stop it from flapping in the icy breeze. I can see the students piling in the front doors, and I turn my jog into a run. I’m focusing so heavily on the doors, that I don’t see them. A strong hand lashes out, catching hold of my sleeve and tugging me into the alleyway that runs down beside my school.

I always knew this alley was dangerous.

My body is slammed against a hard wooden fence, and I set eyes on my bullies. Four of them. They’re all bigger than me, all of them on the football team. They’re from a few grades up, and they’ve just turned sixteen. The leader of the group, Marcel, steps forward first. He scrunches his nose in disgust, as if I’ve just dragged myself out of a gutter, as if I’m offending him. He leans in close, and I can smell cigarettes on his breath.

Smoking is not cool.

“You’ve been trying to avoid me, Will. Did you really think you could hide at home with Mommy, and never have to come out again?”

I stare at him, wondering why he chose me to pick on. I didn’t even know his name until he flagged me down and shoved my head down a toilet six months ago. I was just a kid, keeping my head down, studying and learning like I should. Now here I am, pressed against a fence, wondering why they decided I was good enough to take extra special effort to attack. I don’t bother answering him; it’ll only make him worse. My answers won’t make a difference. If I answer, I’m wrong. If I don’t answer, I’m wrong.

“Are you fucking mute, you little cunt?”

My body jerks. I hate that word, it’s so…vulgar. I let my eyes move to the four other guys standing like protective pack animals around Marcel. I don’t know their names; they’re not significant enough. The tall boy with orange hair looks nervous, like he knows what’s about to happen could put him in a world of trouble - but he’s still here, still making the choice to stay. The other two guys are stony faced, and fully aware of their part in this attack.

I still don’t answer him. If I just let them beat me, it’ll go away quicker.

“You’re a freak, Will, do you know that?” Marcel hisses, leaning in closer.

Of course I know that. I wouldn’t be pinned against a fence if I didn’t know that.

Bullies are so dumb.

Marcel raises his fist, and brings it down over my face, cracking my nose so hard blood spurts onto his shirt. I don’t cry out, because that’s what he wants, but the pain radiating through my head is nearly enough to make me beg. Nearly. Marcel takes hold of my shirt, and his grey eyes scan my face. He’s panting, as though I’ve shoved him into an alley and challenged him. Like this is my fault. The world is twisted like that, and it’s a lesson I’ve learned the hard way.

“You know,” he growls, locking eyes with me. “I heard my girl saying how handsome you were the other day. Do you know how much it sucks to have my girl saying that a freak is handsome? Especially a freak that’s only what? Thirteen years old? Your dick would be no bigger than a tube of damned lipstick, yet she thinks you’re handsome!”

I wouldn’t know how much it sucks to have a girl say that, because I don’t have a girl.

Again, bullies are dumb.

“Don’t answer me, you little twerp. It doesn’t matter. I will make sure by the time you leave this alley; you’re not handsome anymore. I won’t have my competition being some little weasel that can’t even speak.”

I taste blood filling my mouth, and my nose is pounding so heavily I’m almost sure I can hear my own heart in my head. I don’t take my eyes from Marcel. They say look danger right in the eye; it gives you power and strength. I don’t feel powerful right now, in fact, I don’t really feel anything. Someone like me doesn’t fight, I’m the underdog, and underdogs are weak. Everyone knows it.

Marcel reaches into his back pocket, and pulls out a pocket knife. The heart that feels like it’s in my head begins thumping even harder. I try not to show fear, I try to stand tall and take what he dishes out with strength, but that’s not so easy when your attacker is waving around a pocket knife.

“She said it was your eyes,” he begins, lazily tracing circles on his palm with the blade. “She said they’re the most stunning eyes she’s ever seen. Like the ocean.”

I didn’t know my eyes were like the ocean.

He takes hold of my shirt, yanking me close. “No one is more appealing to my girl, than me.”

They say bad things happen in slow motion, they’re right. I feel Marcel throw me down onto the floor. I feel every movement as my body slammed into the dirt. I feel his body weight coming over me, his knees pinning me down as I squirm. I feel his friend take my arms, pulling them above my head, while another puts a hand over my mouth. With my nose pouring with blood, that makes it difficult to breathe.

I feel the knife ripping into my skin as I thrash my head from side to side, and I can feel the blood pouring down the sides of my face. Each time he attempts to stab me, I move and the knife only slices through the skin around my eye. My pained wails fill the alley, but no one comes to help me. No one is around in the one moment of my life that I need them.

I know what I’ll remember most about that day, and that is the moment he finally manages to drive the knife into my eye.

I don’t feel pain, not right away. Instead I hear the popping sound, as his blade pierces right through. Then I feel pressure as he twists. It’s only when he yanks it out of its socket, that I start to scream. Then the pain is unlike anything I’ve ever felt. Words cannot begin to explain the horror I feel as darkness begins to invade my body. I know my face is covered in blood, because it drips down to soak my hair. I know I bite his friends hand so hard I nearly take off his finger.

I don’t know what they’re saying, or even acknowledge the moment when they run away. All I know was that I am bleeding to death in an alley, missing an eye. Red fills my vision as the blood begins to cover every part of my face. I know I’m still screaming, even though I can’t hear it. All I can hear is an excessive ringing in my ears. I can’t even move my hands to cover my eye, in an attempt to protect the empty socket. I can do nothing but lay and scream, witnessing a pain that I’ll never witness again in my life, and wondering what I did to deserve it.

No one deserves to die.

But I do die that day.

And in my place, a monster is born.

I absolutely love this book! Destroyed is deep, gripping, tragic and spicy. It sucks you in easily and has your heart breaking and swelling simultaneously. The story of Roan and Hazel is distinctive with beautiful symbolism and poetic under tones.
—Kristina, Amazon Review

It's hard not to be speechless after reading Destroyed...I was absolutely addicted to the story (and Roan). Hazel and Roan have pasts that are littered with pain and secrets, yet they both kept living, just going through the motions. This journey touched me, stayed with me, and drew me in like a total addict. Their tale had so much depth, so many layers, and I could feel both their grief and love...and it was worth every ounce of sadness to get to the end. Celeste, Amazon Review
