Their love was forbidden and doomed to failure.

A romance set in a world where slavery is government run and slaves are fitted with microchips.

Savannah, fleeing a turbulent relationship, seeks solace at her brother’s country farmhouse. It’s there that she meets Kayden; her brother’s slave who's considered less than human. These two damaged souls form an unbreakable bond, one that’s about to be tested, because Kayden is her brother’s property and he will stop at nothing to keep them apart.

Please note this book contains some sexual scenes, violence and strong language.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

In Chains was a good start to this series. I don’t like the idea that anybody is EVER a slave in real life, but as this is a fictional tale, I will say I like the idea that Michelle has.

Neathderthals are humans, although they are called ‘it’, who have a DNA that sets them apart from normal humans.

“No, they’re not human. They’re Neanderthal.”

I give up trying to play and just move a random pawn forward.
“Neaderthal’s have been extinct for years.”

“They found out that’s not the case. They’ve evolved like we have, so they don’t look like you imagine. You can tell because they all have brown and blue eyes, black hair and their hands and feet are bigger than ours.” He takes my castle.

“So if someone has the misfortune to have black hair and big feet they’re captured as a slave?” This conversation is so ridiculous I can’t even play this game anymore. I knock over my king.

“No one’s captured Savannah. They don’t do midnight raids.” he laughs at his own joke. “They test the DNA of all new-borns; have been doing it for years. If it has Neanderthal DNA, it’s put into slavery.”

Your Master will call you an ‘it’ rather than call you by name. As a slave you have no rights and can be easily executed by electrocution.

Zap of volts and you are disposed of.

I have questions about this whole slavery thing as one of our male leads friends is a female slave who has long legs and a tiny waist. I was thinking long legged Hobbit at one stage. She doesn’t quite feel like she would look the part with big feet and hands on that figure.

I personally needed some more work put into the slavery part of this story.

Savannah is running from her ex boyfriend, Dan, who is a complete dick wad. She flees London to the country side and bunks in with her brother, Simon.

Simon too is a bit of a dick wad. He has a male slave. I thought Ben ( Simon's buddy)  and Simon were written well. Simon does horrible things to his slave and you want to turn that around on him.

Ben is a creep and behaves accordingly. I think Savannah needed to reassess how to keep Kayden safe and not go straight for the blow job, idea.

That kind of made me do the book reading , 'ewwwwww' noise. There is the smexi bj and there is the 'ugh don't-go-there-girlfriend' , bj.

Ben is the latter.

Savannah has a soft heart and she befriends the slave who she calls by his name, Kayden.

Kayden is a character I didn’t totally connect with but I liked him. For me personally and it is just my one opinion, it was the way he was written. He appeared uneducated at first, due to his life, which you can understand, you will learn about it as you read. But, then he would sound very intelligent.

But then...

I felt like I wasn’t getting a solid character representation from him. I really liked his friends, even Clay, I would have liked to have seen them more in the story.

I think this story for me, was too short to get a real feel for the characters. I appreciate there is another installment, but I think the I love you’s, were far too soon.

Savannah I found to be a little dumbed down sometimes. I am still not sure what to make of her character. She is kind of fearless, with Kayden’s life , knowing what her brother and his friend can do to Kayden, but she isn’t really keeping him safe. Her feelings for him take over and she does rash and dangerous things, when it comes to Kayden.

Kayden is quite fearless when it comes to his life and safety. He just rolls with the punches.

Savannah knew what her brother could do, and did, but she still took those chances. I know she is supposed to be in love with the slave, but I think I needed that to be more believable. I would accept how that played out, more, if I was truly believing in these two as a couple.

I totally get that slaves are slaves, but...

Simon has a girlfriend, who is a bit of a biaaatch, but he treats his sister like she is nothing. He cares about her, but he shows her no respect, like she is brainless.

I liked Jenny, she seems like she has a good heart. Savannah has a good heart.

Kayden at twenty six, has this boyish charm, made declarations of love, but he was missing something, for me. He endeared me sometimes and then others...

I felt like I was getting somewhere with Kayden when Michelle would give me a little bit of back story to his character. I liked it when he shared his dirty teddy with Savannah. Yet she didn't seem to do anything with the dirty teddy. It meant a lot to him that teddy. It was against the rules, yet he had kept his child teddy safe.
Savannah certainly knows how to go from one bad relationship to another and then into the frying pan.

That would be the next book.

I would have liked to know a time for this book, or more information about the world that has been built with slaves.

I got told there are slaves. I got told about DNA. But that was it. It seemed like the modern world, with phones, cars etc, but with slaves.

It felt like a combination of hundred years ago and today. Wooden poles for whipping in the field, dirty bed in a caravan, the compound where you are left out in the weather as punishment until your execution.

I got mixed vibes.

I give this book 3 stars as I felt it did need some work on the story line for me , personally. Other readers may totally dig it, as is. And that is awesome.

I'm not sure of the genre either, I get it is romance, and I assume New Adult. I'm not sure if this is a dystopian world?

I wish Michelle all the best with her writing.

We’re in the corner of a large field. A rusty old caravan rests on bricks, there’s cardboard where a window should be, the glass must have got smashed I guess. In front of the caravan is a large bonfire and from the light of the flames I can make out two men and a woman sitting around it.

The woman stands up and runs towards us. Even dressed in rags she’s beautiful. Curvy, with long legs and a tiny little waist, long ebony curls tumble down her back. She flings her arms around Kayden and he lifts her off her feet and spins her around, then smiles down at her.

Oh I’m so stupid. I thought he liked me but she’s obviously his girlfriend. If she isn’t I can see he wants her to be. Why did I come here? I should have gone to the movies. Turning around I start to walk back the way we came. He’s too busy talking to her; he won’t even notice I’m gone. I don’t know how I’m going to get home in the dark, I’m going to get lost and Simon will have to send out a search party, they probably won’t find me until morning. My eyes fill with tears as I stumble blindly. I hear footsteps behind me and then Kayden is in front of me, his hands on my shoulders. “Where you going Savannah?”

“Home. Enjoy the picnic.”

“What’s wrong? What have I done? I’m sorry.”

Ugh, I don’t want to tell him. I’m too ashamed to admit that I thought he liked me. Maybe I can pretend I’m not feeling well but then he’ll have to walk me back and I’ll know that he’ll wish he could’ve stayed here with her. That’ll make me feel even more stupid. I’ve got no choice, I’m going to have to put a brave face on this. It’ll only be for a couple of hours, then I can go home and cry. I’ll avoid Kayden after tonight. “I’m fine.” I put on my best fake smile. “I thought I’d left something at home but now I remember it’s in the bag.”

He puts his arm around my shoulder and we walk back over to the others. This is the last time I’ll ever feel his hands on me. Maybe I should be making the most of it, but I can’t. We sit down around the fire with them. They’re looking at me but no one is saying a word. Finally Kayden speaks. “This is Savannah. She’s my owner’s sister.”

The beautiful one looks at him, her eyes wide. “You call her by her name Kade?” Oh they are so definitely dating. She’s shortened his name; I can never call him that now. She obviously thinks we’ve got close. So did I. We’re both wrong.

“She told me to call her that.”

I close my eyes. I don’t want to hear anymore. He was obviously happy calling me Miss and keeping his distance. I should have left things as they were. I should never have asked for his help with the eggs. Should’ve, would’ve could’ve. I tune out the rest of their conversation and look around at my companions. The guy sitting opposite looks a couple of years younger than me. He has the same blue and brown eyes and dark hair as Kayden but this guy’s hair is longer, wavy and flopping into his eyes. He notices me looking at him. “The names Trent. Nice to meet you Miss.”

I’m about to tell him to call me Savannah but I made that mistake with Kayden, so I keep my mouth shut. “Nice to meet you too.”

I look to the other guy. He’s about my age. He’s shirtless and lean and toned like Kayden. His hair is shaved close to his scalp but what distinguishes him the most are the scars and bruises all over his face and body and the thick metal collar around his neck. There are scars on his arms that look like someone has carved letters into his skin with a knife. Looking closer I see they are in fact letters. FUK on his bicep and U on his forearm, is it supposed to be ‘fuck you’. I quickly close my mouth, suddenly aware that I’ve been gawping at him. He’s glaring at me. His eyes are hard and glacial. Nervous, I turn towards a friendlier face, Trent’s.

He’s pouring liquid from a plastic bottle into some tin mugs and he hands one to me. Putting it to my lips, my eyes water, it smells like paint stripper. I can’t get past the smell to be able to drink the contents. “What is this?”

Trent sniggers. “It’s home-made potato wine Miss. It’s ninety percent proof, so go easy.”

Everyone else is drinking it, so I hold my nose and take a mouthful of the foul smelling liquid. Oh God, my throat is on fire! Coughing and spluttering I can feel Kayden rubbing my back. “It takes some getting used to Savannah.”

I take another mouthful, not looking at him. I’m in the mood to get drunk. His hand still rests on my back. What’s his game? Is he using me to make his girlfriend jealous? Now I’m being ridiculous, I couldn’t make her jealous if I tried. I guess the alcohol has given me confidence and I tell him to take his hand off my back. He does but now he’s frowning at me.

“I’ve brought some food.” I open the cool bag. “There’s eggs, crisps, peanut butter sandwiches and muffins. Help yourselves.”

Kayden leans towards me. “Thank you,” he says softly.

I just nod. I’m still not looking at him but I can feel his eyes burning into the side of my face. Trent and the beauty queen dive into the food. The guy with the collar just looks at it, he seems pissed off. Kayden isn’t eating anything either. I had no intention of having any, I can get food anytime.

Kayden leans in towards me again. “The girl’s name is Kaci and-”

I don’t let him finish. Standing up I walk away from the fire and light a cigarette. I don’t want to know her damn name. Kaci and Kayden, even their names are perfect for each other. Pinching the bridge of my nose I want to go back home more than ever. I finish smoking, put out my cigarette and walk back over to them.

Kayden is hanging his head, his shoulders are slumped and he’s picking at his fingers. Then I spot the source of his misery. Kaci is sitting on the lap of the guy with the collar, feeding him egg. Unrequited love. I know how that feels. I should be glad that she’s not his girlfriend but watching him mope over her is actually worse. Trent has disappeared.

I turn the radio on, I need a distraction. The DJ announces it’s the love hour. Oh great! Kayden raises his head. “Will you dance with me Savannah?” An hour ago I would have jumped at the chance, but not now. He only wants to dance with me because he can’t have Kaci. I shake my head. His eyes drop to his hands and he resumes picking at his fingers.

Trent returns with another plastic bottle full of hooch. I hold my mug out to him for a top up. Kaci is now snogging her boyfriend, Kayden is still moping over her and I don’t want to watch this anymore. I mouth to Trent, “Do you want to dance?”

He nods his head and grins as he takes my hand. Kayden’s head snaps up and I hear him gasp as Trent and I start moving to the music. I can feel tears pricking at my eyes but I’m not going to make a fool of myself by crying in front of him. I lose myself in the music, the hooch is certainly helping, I’m beginning to feel better and am starting to enjoy myself. The song ends but I don’t want to stop, so I keep swaying with Trent till the next song begins. I’m not in the mood for conversation but he starts talking and I can’t ignore him. “Thanks for the food Miss.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I hope Clay didn’t upset you Miss. It’s not you, he doesn’t like any humans.”

“Is Clay the guy with the collar,” I whisper. He nods and I glance across at Clay. He’s wrapped himself around Kaci and he’s actually smiling.

The song ends and I bend down to pick up my mug of hooch. I’m still holding Trent with my other hand; I’m not ready to stop dancing yet. I take a big gulp of the hooch and put my arms around Trent as the next song begins.

“TRENT!” We both jump and look towards Kayden who is now standing up, his fists clenched and glaring murderously at Trent. He snarls at him, “Trent, sit the fuck down.”

Trent looks at me. “I’d better not dance with you because…,” he nods towards Kayden.

Sitting down I knock back the remainder of my hooch. I should be feeling drunk. I wish I were, but I’m not. Trent throws more logs on the fire. He doesn’t seem bothered by the way Kayden spoke to him. He’s laughing and joking with Clay. Kayden is staring into the fire, his face sullen.

Chloe hasn't had the best life. With a mother who is gone more often than not, she has had to raise herself. After graduating high school, she leaves to start a new life away at West Virginia University with her best friends Amber and Logan, determined to leave her demons in the past.

On her first day, she meets a stranger who takes her breath away at first sight. Until she met Drake, no one had ever sparked her interest. Now this tattooed and pierced bad boy is all she can think about, no matter how hard she fights it.

Falling for Drake was never part of her plans, but when it happens, things seem to do anything but fall into place.

Dealing with a tragic past, Drake has never cared about anyone else but himself and his band. But when Chloe takes the empty seat next to him in class, things start to change. Instantly drawn to her, he begins to wonder if one girl can take a cold hearted womanizer and change every part of him?

Long hidden feelings are revealed and friendships tested to the brink.

---------------------------------------------------------------

He laughed at my pitiful attempts. “Is that all you’ve got? What a wimp.” At his words, I started pushing him harder, but my hands slipped from his hip and I tumbled down onto him. My breath was sucked out of me as I landed on top of him and I felt those tingles everywhere my body pressed against his. I tried to shove away from him, but he grabbed my arms and pulled me up so I was fully on top of him, chest to chest, stomach to stomach, hips to hips. He was hard everywhere I touched and I felt my cheeks turning red as I looked at him.

His eyes had darkened until they were black with hunger as he stared at me, and a smirk appeared on his lips. “You know baby, if you wanted to get on top of me all you had to do was ask.”

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Torn for me , had the vibe of Thoughtless by S.C Stephens and From Ashes by Molly McAdams. This was a good start to this series. I can see on Goodreads all the four and five stars being slapped down but I am going with a more conservative rating.

My thoughts on Torn.

I had a little trouble connecting with all the characters in Torn. I thought Torn had a strong start but then things went a bit pear shaped for me.

Drake is the pierced, tattooed, bad boy who also happens to be a rocker playing at the local watering hole when he isn’t at College. His band is, Breaking The Hunger consisting of band mates, Adam, Eric and Jade.

Logan is Chloe’s bff, she has known him a long time. Chloe and Logan are tight as friends. He has seen her mother beating on her and understands her past.

Logan wants more.

Chloe is rather naive to Logan’s love for her.

Amber is the other friend that makes up this threesome. Chloe, Amber and Logan do lots of things together.

Enter Drake. He threatens Logan’s friendship/love for Chloe. This is where it went pear shaped for me. It wasn’t believable to me. This love triangle felt disconnected to me as the reader.

Drake has his own demons he is coping with and wants Chloe but also pushes her away.

Logan has loved Chloe from afar as he doesn’t want their friendship destroyed, but it is time to make a move before Drake does.

I thought Logan and Chloe were better as just friends. I didn’t see anything great and deserving in Chloe. Logan acted immature when he was flaunting his friendship/relationship with Chloe in front of Drake.

Chloe, what can I say. I just did not dig this chick. She was a drama queen, a cheater, a liar... let’s say it did not endear me to her.

Drake was probably the better character out of the lot of them.

Amber was the least dramatic. I liked her too.

I think there were some plot flaws that got forgotten. I didn’t understand why Chloe needed to wear anything of Drakes when she stayed over at his place after the unfortunate incident at the bar. It felt forced, a way to show that he had women’s bra’s and panties at his place. She had her own clothes, they weren’t damaged in anyway, she had her own underwear. I could certainly understand if I was given a reason like they were damaged beyond salvaging.

Why?

She didn’t seem to change back into her Uni sweat shirt and torn jeans and appeared to leave Drakes wearing Drakes clothes the next morning , then she went straight to Mexican for lunch with Logan and then back to Logan’s room to study.

Logan didn’t notice the men’s shirt and sweats? Didn’t ask whose clothes she had on?

Then another occasion Drake asks if Chloe is on birth control which is very considerate, but then... dude, Drake didn’t wear a condom which was another thing that turned my nose up, only because he is the biggest man-whore. It set the tone that Drake slept with girls without protection. Wearing a condom is just plain STD safe. Logan wore a condom. Bad boys do wear condoms. It just makes good health sense until you can be sure the person is safe. Especially with a known man-whore. If Drake had mentioned that he was clean, always wore condoms with the other females he constantly slept with, then ok, as the reader I know he is practicing safe sex. It felt like we only wanted to be shown Drakes doodle piercing and how useful it was in the fro fro area. (Vjayjay)

I was wondering how Chloe paid for everything because she only got a job half way through the book. I let that one slide under the assumption that Amber’s parents tied her over.

I got confused with the guys and their standards/morals.

Drake didn’t want to take advantage of Chloe while she was drunk, but then Logan did. Logan wore a condom, but Drake didn’t when they got it on. Drake can be amazing with how thoughtful he can be, and Logan can appear he just had to win against Drake and flaunt it.

I felt the two guy characters behaviour could be confusing.

Chloe did just plain silly things that were random like walking out into a freezing lake up to her waist. Now I know she is shorter than Drake but he had to have got wet getting her out and carrying her. But no mention of him getting wet. She got slathered with attention. I understand she wanted to get numb, but dude! She seemed quite immature at times. I understand she had a horrible childhood.

Now, I did have to laugh at Amber falling in a toilet. I mean at their age, how does your ass fit inside a toilet and hit the water, unless you are tiny. I mean five year old sized. Is the hole that big? Ehh, I shall let that one slide too, she may have a teeny ass.

I did enjoy parts of this book, but I also found myself rolling my eyes at Chloe and her ability to let the female side down with her cheating. No matter what excuse you put in front of it, you are cheating and nobody deserves to be cheated on , especially someone who has stood by you when you needed them most.

It only ends in heart ache.

I am interested to read Twisted to see what impact her mother has on the story line. This was an ok read for me, but that doesn't mean Twisted won't blow my mind.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

There are many things swimming about in my brain after reading this book.

The title Bad Boy Rock Star is a little deceiving. Sure there is a bad boy rock star in the story named Jack Colt. I do like his name. I like the drummer’s name , Spud. Ha! Fun name. But it was more a story about Hannah bumbling about in her life. With some humorous outcomes.

Hannah has landed herself the title of Manager to the band Storm, by default. Her dad is MIA. He has basically done a runner, due to his financial handlings. His company Megastar Management is in financial trouble and Storm needs to be properly managed or they pay her out of the contract.

Enter the spoilt princess, Hannah. She is used to money and lots of it. She is used to getting her way. Jack is used to doing things his way.

Hannah is not really manager material from where I am sitting. Now, Angie on the other hand, she could be. She was the glue that got this band gigs and noticed. Not sure what Hannah was actually doing, that didn't involve it being Angie's idea.

Angie, the sidekick character is a fun character. I really like her. Funnily I didn't at the start of the book, but she grew on me real quick.

Hannah isn’t a character I connected with as much as Angie. She did have humorous thoughts and played the rich kid part well, but I wanted to connect more with her.

Eric grabbed me. I really like him. He kinda wears his heart on his sleeve and Eric-Mama was a fun little addition.

Jack I wanted to really like. His character is all sorts of temperatures and I wasn’t able to hang on to him. I get he has some baggage, I get he uses women as much as they use him, but I am getting nothing new here. I wanted him to be more growl worthy. He is a rocker. He is a bad boy.

I gotta say, this story is patchy in parts and kind of made me feel like I was on a bit of a cray, cray train , sometimes. I wasn't sure where I was headed.

There were so many clichés in this story line that they were stacking up.

Pool playing and the lad showing her how to do it, which in turn gets her a bit excited as he is rubbing against her.

The dark alley groping and arms above the head.

I don’t like him.

Stay away from me I am no good for you.

Jack wasn’t doing anything extra special in this book. He was just snogging, rooting and being your average rocker. I wanted Jack to be spectacular. I wanted him to show me some powerful emotion .

I felt more from watching Eric. The lad has a crush.

I did like that Hannah grew a bit by the end of the story. Money or no money she was doing it on her own. She wasn't asking for hand outs. She genuinely wanted what was best for the band. She stood up to her father. I thought it was going to go in a different direction with her dad.

The ending was like a to-be-continued. I get what Candy was doing, but I felt like this one needs a bit more work. Honest critiquers are an author's best tool.

The book cover is very eye catching and I really like it.

These are just my personal thoughts. I am not trying to be rude, but I got frustrated. I could see the potential but watching Hannah bumble about and being in her head was quite frustrating sometimes. The story seemed to jump about. The dots weren’t connecting for me, very well.

But hey, I am just one person.

AUTHOR BIO

Candy J. Starr used to be a band manager until she realised that the band she managed was so lacking in charisma that they actually sucked the charisma out of any room they played. “Screw you,” she said, leaving them to wallow in obscurity – totally forgetting that they owed her big bucks for video equipment hire.

Candy has filmed and interviewed some big names in the rock business, and a lot of small ones. She’s seen the dirty little secrets that go on in the back rooms of band venues. She’s seen the ugly side of rock and the very pretty one.

But, of course, everything she writes is fiction.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

This was a good start to Felicity’s series . I am on the blog tour for Her Wicked Angel , Her Angel # 6, so I thought I had better read some of this series. They can be read stand alone.

Before I tell you my thoughts on this first story in the series, I want to say that these are just my one opinion. Other readers will think differently to me. I am rating my thoughts on how I felt about the book.

I am going to give it a generous 3 stars. I have my constructive thoughts on why. I can see on Goodreads others have given 4 and 5 stars and loved it. That is awesome.

Her Dark Angel is a novella sized read which I did enjoy reading but,  I felt that more could definitely have been said. I wanted characters fleshed out more. I have read novella sized reads before that have kept me very satisfied. I accept they are a shorter read, so I rate my reading experience taking this into consideration.

I enjoyed Felicity’s story about Apollyon, an angel who protected the bottomless pit in Hell, and Serenity a witch.

I don't know a great deal about Serenity's character, and I know little more about Apollyon. They are in Paris, but they could have been anywhere as I didn’t feel the French influence to give the story a more convincing location. Sure I got told about the Paris tourist spots they flew to, but even some words spoken in French would have made me connect more to their location, after all Apollyon is speaking in French to her for her to understand. I think that would have been a nice touch to remind us and French is such a sexy language.

I really like Apollyon, I love his name. I liked how he felt conscious of his beautiful wings. I loved how he let us know he loves to fly and he hadn’t got to do that much. It brought him joy. I liked his honesty about not having had a sexual relationship in waaaayyy to long. He had an openness he was willing to show in front of Serenity.

I didn’t really understand why they wham bam loved each other. I think with a story like this about angel warriors and other paranormal characters, I needed more pages filled to be totally convinced.

From the many angel reads I have read, I can’t see how Apollyon can just drop his eternity job so easily because Serenity in the end commanded him to. I'm out, next dude can take my place. I could have had that fleshed out.

The revenge/vengeance issue of an ex boyfriend was a bit wobbly in plot depth. Edward was a wanker, cheated, bit of a ladies man. Truly , he wasn’t worth it in the first place. Not when you compare him to Apollyon. Chalk and cheese.

I really would have loved some depth in the story line squeezed into this novella.

I know Apollyon’s day job, but I know nothing of Serenity other than she is a witch with great potential.

“What are you then?”

... “I told you. Apollyon, the great destroyer... angel of the Apoclaypse, responsible for raining hell down on Earth when everything comes to an end.”

That wasn’t comforting at all.

“You’re not a good angel then?”

He smiled and there was a sexy sort of darkness in his look. “I am good, if by that you mean I do not work for the Devil, but I can be very bad.”

This was a nice easy read, with all the right smexual * fans oneself * moments. Coffee had an effect on Apollyon. Heheheee!

He found a cup and poured some of the coffee into it. It was hot but it didn’t stop him. He blew on it a few times and then sipped it. The effect was instantaneous. His cock twitched and he groaned at the thought of showering with Serenity. He took a mouthful of coffee, grimaced as he swallowed down the hot liquid, and then went after her, his erection growing harder with each step.

I would have loved to have gotten to know both characters more and had a dangerous moment or two. Apart from a punch up in an exotic bar, it was pretty smooth sailing.

Nobody had to work for love, it just came.

He really had been watching her. Her own guardian angel. He had seen her pain and then he had heard her call, and he had come to her, to ease her suffering and make her feel better.

Looking forward to picking up Her Fallen Angel # 2 . Another novella sized read and seeing where Felicity’s writing takes me.

RATING: 3 BRIGGS & KYDEN STARS !!

Blurb : Goodreads

Nexi Jones—part witch, part guardian, and wannabe kick-ass warrior—can’t throw a punch or conjure the simplest magic. But that doesn’t stop her from hunting the werewolves who slaughtered her human family. She’ll have her revenge, but only if Kyden, the elite guardian, would get the hell out of her way.

Kyden can’t decide if Nexi wants to get herself killed or if she just has no clue what she’s doing. But her father made it clear: keep Nexi safe…or else. Of course, the more Nexi runs toward revenge, the more she needs Kyden’s aid, and as she grows into her power and confidence, so does his desire to protect her. The only problem? She’d rather he dropped dead.

But when a vampire paints a bull's-eye on Nexi’s back, she’s hard-pressed to deny Kyden and the help he’s offering. Even if it means getting her revenge will be a little bit harder. At least it will still be as sweet.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I enjoyed the whole idea of there being an Otherworld. That would be the home of the Supernaturals, and the Guardians who police any bad behavior from the Supernaturals, and, as the character’s called it, Earthworld. That would be us, plain ol’ humans. When the shiz goes down in the Earthworld with Supernaturals, the Guardians step in, humans none the wiser.

Supernaturals do live amongst the humans, quietly and peacefully, but a lot remain in the Otherworld, travelling between portals.

I really liked the idea of Guardian's policing Supernaturals and solving murders in their eyes, but unfortunately that would leave a lot of cold cases in humans eyes.

Nexi gets introduced to her new self, the non human, through the violent deaths of her parents. Not a great way to find out.

Nexi Jones finds out that she is half witch and half guardian.

Enter Kyden wearing his smexi leather kilt and not much else and his trusty sword, used to killeth the baddies, and a whole new life opens up to Nexi.

Nexi, Nexi, Nexi. I am going to say I did not connect with her character very well. I did try. I just felt she had some seriously dumbed down dialogue sometimes , considering she is 25 years old, then she became an overnight success in the , I can killeth the baddies all by myself, thankyou very much.

I really would have loved Nexi to have been given more time in the building of her character and in the Kyden department. Not much build up. Pretty insta. Don’t get me started on,( I can’t help but roll my eyes) her Guardian outfit. I couldn’t really take her seriously like other kickass lead chickie babes who command fighting respect and are worthy to hang out with the lads and kick baddie butt. That is just me. Everybody else is probably happy as larry to kick butt in a leather bra and kilt. Considering they are glamoured and nobody in the earthworld can see them, for what they are actually wearing. I shouldn't be criticising.

I felt like Nexi was a pretty cheesie character, but in saying that, she did get better, I think.

I loved Kyden. Not because he was all smexi in his kilt, but I thought he was written much better. Well, he was all smexi in his kilt, but.... I had more to grab onto with him. He showed me his character worth in his title, Elite Guardian.

Briggs!

Love the guy. Love how he calls Nexi, Darlin’. We sadly got not much of him in this installment which makes me wonder if book # 2 is his, after watching the speed relationship of Kyden and Nexi and her speedy training sessions to become the overnight success. I get that she hadn’t yet come into her powers. Maybe I just needed this book to be another hundred pages long, then I would not be all nit picky.

I do apologize for being a bit picky in this review.

I have read a lot of supernatural books and werewolves and vampires etc...throw witches in too, and I just felt like the story line was rushed too much. For the number of pages and how many things went down.

That is just my personal opinion.

Nexi Jones is losing those she loves left, right and center in this book. I possibly felt like a lot happened within the size of this book. I think I would have liked parts to maybe have stretched on into book # 2. Leaving room for relationship growth and character growth.

Ok so how I understood the whole policing duties is:

Werewolves track offenders/  witnesses by scent

Vamps glamour mortal memories

Guardians hunt and destroy offenders - That would be Kyden and his sword.

Witches assist with their magic, memory reading of the deceased to play back how the person died and at whose hand, or claw.... fangs.... That would be the cutie pie Haven’s job. Loved her!

“A system that works,” he said, drawing her focus to him, then he added, “Once we’re notified of a killing by a supernatural cop, a guardian, along with Haven, will arrive and take over the assignment.”

Now for whatever reason, unless I missed something about Kyden and Drake barreling into Nexi’s earth home after her parents had been slaughtered. Why did Haven not come and work her mojo? She would be able to see the whole killing scene play out and then a tracker could be sent to find the remaining living villain. Haven came to every killing in this book, but that one? Every villain got caught and dealt with, pretty swiftly, but it took the whole book to find this baddie.

I think that is why I needed more pages to satisfy me. I did enjoy most of this book. I really think Briggs is going to be good fun and Caveman Kyden knows how to drop his kilt, but as far as story plot I felt that more work could have been put into it. But again, I may be the only one who feels this.

I love the cover, it is stunning and very eye catching and the title suited the story.

I really wanted to like this more. I was drawn to the beautiful cover.

MARISSA'S REVIEW:

Werewolves Be Damned was a fairly enjoyable read for myself.

Our leading lady and wannabe avenger Nexi Jones - I'm just not too sure about her. I needed more than just a revenge seeking horny virgin guardian in training!  Though I did enjoy when her guardian skills kicked in for the first time when her rage took over. Plus....she has some good smart-ass witty comments.

Kyden is the other half of the dynamic hot molten duo.  Suppressing his love/lust for Nexi during her weeks of training must have been so "hard" for such a strong guy.  I liked him one minute and wanted to kick his cajoolies the next for being so macho possessive over his woman!

Guardian uniforms - Seriously - only HeMan and Shera get to rock leather kilts and bras, or in Kyden's position bare chested other than a leather sword sheath!  But for quick access Mr & Mrs Smith style during a werewolf take down - the kilts came in handy!! Even if "she hadn't dry-humped anyone since high school.."!

I'm with Michelle on the whole first scene issue - why didn't Haven come in and use her skills to work out who killed Nexi's parents?

Do I go to book 2? I will venture down that road - I'd like to read more Briggs - as does everyone it appears. There's a hint of roguishness and dollop of cheeky bad boy that gives Briggs a certain appeal.  I'd be more than happy to venture down that path!!
ENJOY!
MARISSA

Teaser with Briggs:

I’ve found you, fur ball.

Nexi peered from behind the large oak tree and spotted the small log cabin nestled in the thick forest. The porch light cast a warm glow into the night. Fog settled over the lush grass, and the night was dark, eerie.

Stepping away from her hiding place behind the tree, she strode forward and gripped the dagger tightly in her hand. Keeping the silver blade pointed outward, she climbed the cabin’s porch steps, taking each one slowly to avoid detection.

Once she arrived at the front door, she wrapped her hand around the door handle. Rich hunger for revenge burned in her veins and made her intent on one thing: to slaughter the werewolf who escaped the night of her parents’ murder. Not caring what awaited her, she stormed inside, dagger pointed, ready to kill.

The simple cabin had two large brown couches near a wood-burning stove, a kitchenette behind the living room, and a quilt-covered bed resting in the back. And that was it; there were no other rooms to investigate. No secret hiding places she could see.

No damned werewolf.

She cursed, shut the front door behind her, then trotted down the steps to return to her hiding spot. On her way across the yard, she glanced at the space to the right of the tree, which looked much like a heat wave, indicating that the portal to the Otherworld remained.

In some places around the world—or the Earthworld, as supernaturals had called it—there were permanent portals to the supernatural realm. This portal had only appeared because Nexi had travelled to this cabin from the Otherworld. Once she passed through the portal again, the gateway would vanish.

Magic had its perks. Quick travel was one of them.

Nexi shook her head at how normal all this magical stuff seemed now. Just over a month ago she’d never believed in anything that went bump in the night. Now she knew all those things existed, and in fact, she was one of them.

To her horror, she had learned that her birth mother, Tillie, had been murdered by a power-hungry vampire, Lazarus. All those years ago, her birth father, Drake, had protectively decided to block Nexi’s supernatural abilities. He had planned for her to live and die as a mortal. Now with her return to the Otherworld and the removal of the block on her true identity, there was no going back.

She was no longer plain, human, Nexi Jones.

She was Nexi Jones, part guardian, part witch.

Looking away from the portal and to her hiding spot until the werewolf returned, she hurried her steps. She wasn’t ready to return to the Otherworld yet. Not until she had the werewolf’s head as her wall ornament would she dare go home.

Just as she neared the tree, a woodsy scent that had nothing to do with the forest mixed with the citrusy aroma of aftershave. A blink of an eye later, the dagger she held was now at her throat, a hard body closed in on her back.

“You smelled lovely when you arrived.” The low voice by her ear held a faint English accent. “But I never imagined you’d be so pretty.”

The blade pressed into her skin, not drawing blood, but implying that if the werewolf chose, she’d be destined for the grave. “I’m…”

“Going to explain yourself.” He lowered the dagger, took hold of her arm, and jerked her forward.

In a few short strides, the werewolf tossed her through the threshold of the cabin, and slammed the door behind them. He sauntered to the couch, sat down, and regarded her. “Now then, darlin’.” His olive skin was stunningly flawless, and his chocolate-colored hair was spiked tall. “Why would a pretty lass like yourself plan to attack me?”

“Don’t move.” That charm wouldn’t fool her. “Stay right where you are.”

“My mouth is the only thing moving.” His slanted amber eyes raked over her. “Would you like me to stop talking?”

“No.” She hesitated then added, “Only your mouth can move. Nothing else. Tell me what you know.”

He gave her a long look. “I’d be glad to tell you anything you’d like, love.”

His kind face and soft voice wouldn’t trick her. He was a werewolf. She was certain, which was another oddity.

After the block on her supernatural abilities had been lifted, she could identify a supernatural creature as if knowing the difference between a brunette and a redhead. “Tell me why you killed my family.”

“That’s an interesting accusation.” He cocked his head, studying her with a frown. “But I think the more important question is who are you?”

She lifted her chin. “The lass who’s going to cut off your furry wolf balls.”

EXCERPT with KYDEN

“See, this is why you drive me insane.” Pacing in front of him, she huffed. “You go all caveman on me, get all bossy, doing this and that, always being so damn forceful with me—”

Kyden watched her in silent wonder. How had she gained the confidence she had in that very second? She had looked like a supernatural then, not a mortal any longer. Had he been underestimating Nexi and how far she’d come, as quickly as she had?

Perhaps.

Was her anger the key to her strength? Now that he thought it over, she fought the best when burning with hells-fire at him. She had killed Jaxon not for the assignment, but because Kyden planned to show her up. Had she unlocked the final piece to her training without knowing it?

Regardless of that bit of information he’d store away for later, and that he was damn proud of her, something else boiled his blood equally as hot as hers. She had no idea how much he had been controlling that side of his personality for her. How gentle he’d been, when it was not in his nature to take things slow and wait for her to make the first move.

It definitely wasn’t a guardian’s way to wait to claim what belonged to him.

Maybe seeing her supernatural side come out, allowed his to explode. She continued ripping a strip off him, but he heard none of it. He didn’t mind if a woman thought the worst of him, if he deserved it. He’d done nothing to Nexi to deserve it. Was really protecting her so awful?

He wanted her, in his bed, and in his arms.

He’d grown tired of this game.

Kyden took the two steps to close the distance, pressed his body against hers, and he walked forward until her back met the wall. “Listen up, real good, Nexi.” He cupped her soft face, staring in her wide eyes, and tangled his fingers into her hair. “I don’t intervene to belittle you. I don’t like watching anyone hurt you. My only thought is keeping you safe.”

Her lips parted, but only a wisp of air escaped.

He leaned down, his lips inches from hers. “However, since you seem unable to see my true meaning and are already punishing me for being the complete ass you think I am, then I guess there’s no reason not to act like one.”

Without waiting for a response, he pressed his mouth against hers. Shocking him, she kissed him back, with force. Her lips, her taste, were more than he’d imagined. She didn’t fight him for control through his kisses, but melted around him, eagerly accepting his kiss. Each brush of his lips against hers, each slide of her tongue, threatened to consume him.

Kyden forced himself to lean away when her soft moans filled the air. He breathed heavily, as did she. Moving his hands from her hair to her jawline, he tilted her chin up. “That, Nexi, is a man taking what he wants. Overpowering a woman with no care to how she feels or what she thinks. That is a man being an ass.”

He released her face and she was practically plastered to the wall, her cheeks rosy, and her lips puffy from his kiss. At her silence, he arched an eyebrow. “This is when you can use all the insults you’ve stored up, since I now deserve them.”

She didn’t even blink, and stayed quiet.

“Now you’re lost for words, are you, Álainn?” He leaned in and stared down into her huge, glossy eyes. “I am who I am, Nexi, and I make no apologies for it. You want to see what my forceful side truly looks like? Welcome to it, sweetheart.”

BLOG TOUR # 68 - BOOK REVIEW & GIVEAWAY - DEADLY KISSES by KERRI CUEVAS

Today on Novels On The Run, I have a GIVEAWAY and my review for Deadly Kisses by Kerri Cuevas.

By: Kerri Cuevas
Published By: WiDo Publishing
Released: March 5th 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

RATING: 3 GRIM REAPER STARS!!!

Blurb: Goodreads

Aiden Grant has a killer kiss. Literally. And it’s not every reaper who gets to work with the Sixteenth President. Sure, Honest Abe likes to throw out history lessons with reaping assignments, but when you’re favored by the ancients, grim reaper life is pretty sweet for a newly dead seventeen-year-old.

Then things get messy.

Aiden is assigned to reap the soul of Bee, the only girl he has ever loved. When Aiden’s kiss of death fails, intertwining their souls, she is still very much alive and they are both in trouble. The ancients want Bee, who has special powers of her own, and they’ll do anything to get her.

Some rules are meant to be broken, even if that means Aiden must bargain with his own soul to save Bee. Who knew the afterlife could get so complicated?

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Gondolas , Grim Reapers and Abe Lincoln, yes that is right , Abraham Lincoln the 16th President, Aiden, Bee ( as in the insect ) and of course some Ancient villains make up some of the character’s in Kerri’s tale.

Seventeen year old Grim Reaper Aiden Grant, guitar player, is bonded through death to one of the biggest names in American History, Abe Lincoln aka Top Hat.

Aiden gets a text message from his boss that will change his ..errrr....undead life.

Bee , the girl he loves is next on his list. He must take her soul and send her down the River of Lost Souls in his well looked after Gondola.

But things aren’t as simple as they usually are when he is collecting his next soul. Aiden prides himself on not waiting out the seven days to collect the soul, he efficiently gets onto it straight away......NEXT!

Aiden and his trusty scythe must see through Bee’s reaping, the reapers that don’t fulfil the name on their list wind up as skeletons in the River of Lost Souls.

Aiden was killed in a bridge collapse accident with his best friend, Sabrina. She had no regrets so she moved onto Heaven. Aiden had regret so he became a Grim Reaper, immortal but not in a youthful beautiful package... in a decayed body.

Not a good look. Even with the black cloak and hood down to his nose.

I was nothing but a loner, a person who had loved his guitar more than people. Now I was a dead sack of bones.

Bee can see Grim Reapers, always could. Jaleb, her brother has not got the sight of death. Bee becomes a hot commodity and Aiden must keep her safe. Bee has something that the villains want and they will use Jaleb to get it.

I was becoming the patron Reaper of good deeds.

Things are about to change and the Ancient Ones, Ivar the Boneless, Erik and Leif have their own dark, evil agenda.

Aiden and Bee are pulling a Nancy Drew and trying to find who in the Flynt family made a deal with The Dark Lord.

Marlin is a great quirky character. She pulls off weird, very well.

Reina, I grew to like her. It isn’t easy being a Grim Reaper, no matter how much she tries to act like it is a piece of cake, clubbing drinking firewater.

The villains are great, Ivar with his viking hat thingy and his rule breaking brought more interest for me. He was a real threat to Aiden, Bee and Jaleb.

I enjoyed this story but I would have liked more character depth and I felt at times that the dots could have been joined better in the story line. I wanted to connect more with Aiden and Bee. I felt like I needed more convincing of these two as an eventual couple. I think that would come with character depth, for me personally.

A good start for this debut author J
