A SHATTERED EMPIRE

The mad Shōgun Yoritomo has been assassinated by the Stormdancer Yukiko, and the threat of
civil war looms over the Shima Imperium. The Lotus Guild conspires to renew the nation’s broken
dynasty and crush the growing rebellion simultaneously – by endorsing a new Shōgun who desires
nothing more than to see Yukiko dead.

A DARK LEGACY

Yukiko and the mighty thunder tiger Buruu have been cast in the role of heroes by the Kagé
rebellion. But Yukiko herself is blinded by rage over her father’s death, and her ability to hear the
thoughts of beasts is swelling beyond her power to control. Along with Buruu, Yukiko’s anchor is Kin,
the rebel Guildsman who helped her escape from Yoritomo’s clutches. But Kin has his own secrets,
and is haunted by visions of a future he’d rather die than see realized.

A GATHERING STORM

Kagé assassins lurk within the Shōgun’s palace, plotting to end the new dynasty before it begins.
A waif from Kigen’s gutters begins a friendship that could undo the entire empire. A new enemy
gathers its strength, readying to push the fracturing Shima imperium into a war it cannot hope to
survive. And across raging oceans, amongst islands of black glass, Yukiko and Buruu will face foes no
katana or talon can defeat.

The ghosts of a blood-stained past.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

How I felt after reading Kinslayer

Izanagi’s Balls, where do I start? I can’t truly explain in words how breathtaking and amazing the writing in this book is.

Jay has upped it with Kinslayer. I loved Stormdancer, but this book was more, much, much more in so many ways.

Kinslayer is made up of a kaleidoscope of chapters.

Yukiko and Buruu are sharing the limelight with a swagger of characters you will be introduced to, all sharing center stage. There are other female characters of note and strength. The sisters are doing it for themselves.

Yukiko will be taken away from the explosion of this new cast of characters so they can do their thing, their side stories moving in and out of Kinslayer. Yukiko and Burru have other things in their path.

Jay will leave you stunned and make you wait a few more chapters to come back in to that characters side story before you can know more. Sometimes I sat there and thought, you can’t leave me like this.

There will be heroes and villains, and those that want to live better... but foolish they can be. There will be revelations. No good deed will go unpunished.

‘Never let the dragon steer the ship.’

I am not even going to name characters from this new cast as I want you to all go in naked like I was and let it unfold until you are fully clothed in them.

Buruu and Yukiko have such a brother, sister love, a beautiful bond, even when somebody was getting side tracked and thinking about his winky. They will do anything for each other.

You will watch Yukiko understand.

I think I understand you more and more each day, Father.

You will watch Yukiko become more.

‘But this is a war, Kin. The Yukiko you knew? That frightened little girl in the Shogun’s palace? She’s gone.’ Fire in her eyes. ‘She’s dead.’

Hiro. You make my heart bleed.

‘Even after you tore her heart from her chest, betrayed the girl who loved you true ... still you failed to save your Lord’s life.’

She glared with narrowed, hate-filled eyes.
‘You are a disgrace, boy.’
The ghost of a smile graced Hiro’s lips.

There are lighter moments Buruu brings. He did make me smile.

THIS IS MY HELL I SWEAR IT. WHEN I PASS INTO THE AFTERLIFE AND AM PUNISHED FOR MY SINS, THIS WILL BE MY TORMENT. SURROUNDED BY A SEA OF MOONING , ADOLESCENT MONKEY-BOYS. MUDDLING ABOUT IN PUDDLES OF THEIR OWN DRIBBLE.

I am such a fan of Kin. He has given so much up.

‘I’d never hurt you,’ he said. ‘Never betray you. Never.’

He squeezed her fingers so hard it hurt. ‘You mean everything to me. Everything I’ve done. All of it. You’re the reason. The first and only reason.’

There will be moments where you will put your hand over your mouth at the sheer fierceness of Jay’s writing.

Moments where you try to look away but you can’t.

O.M.G!

The more you read the more the chapters become like presents you unwrap with a surprise for the reader in them.

There are beautifully choreographed fighting scenes with colour and light, mood, emotion and there will be blood.

There will be violence.

You will be blindsided from the left, the right, the front and the back.

You will get whip lash.

Who can you truly trust?

‘Thank you for trusting me,’ she said.
‘I don’t trust you.’
‘Then ... thank you for not killing me.’

‘Though we may shed our skins, the stain of our pasts dwell as deep as our bones.’

Oh. Dear. Lord, there is blood. Jay is a fearless writer with his characters. He will choose who he wants to strike down with his mighty pen. In his case the pen is mightier than the sword. In the characters case, the sword will get ya!

Kinslayer is quite a literary work of art.

It’s not just a story.

It is an orchestra of sight and sound and Jay is the conductor, the Grand Maestro.

You will be at one with all your senses when reading his words. Touch, emotion and colour will flood your system.

Jay can proudly and quite rightly so, sit next to the big names in the book world with his head held high. It is early days, but this guy is here to stay. I already see him as a classic author. He will only get more magnanimous . Is that the right word?

This dude can write epically.

You feel the passion in his words. You can see the research and work that has gone in to this series. I was trying to imagine him sitting at his computer when he was writing those epic fight scenes and...well... all those other scenes.

This installment is like a crescendo of chapters. It builds and builds and then explodes with OMG ( polite version) moments and violence that Quentin Tarantino would be proud of, and...and...and...and ...

The surprises, twists, are of epic heart stopping proportions. It was truly an A.M.A.Z.I.N.G read that I feel quite honored to have read. I cannot spoil so I have to simply convey how I felt reading this book.

You can forget how young some of the characters are, you are so immersed in what they are doing.

I had that many O.M.G ( polite version) and WT moments throughout the book. There was only one thing that crossed my mind which I promptly forgot about as Jay had me so immersed in everything else that was going on around me that when I actually was right about this one thing, he threw in an extra curveball that still had me open mouthed like a stranded fish trying to get its last breath out.

Oh the places that can go.

My heart got worked over quite a bit in this book. I was in a front loader washing machine being spun about with his twists.

Then spun the other way.

Kinslayer is brutal, unrelenting, terrifying, accurate, colourful, honest, the glass isn’t half full when it comes to Jay’s writing.

He shows no mercy.

This is a story painted in the colour of the lotus sky.

The names of all the characters just rolled off my tongue. You never forget the Japanese influence as it is so strong and constant.

The Steampunk is exceptional. Whether this series gets made into film or anime, it will be magnificent to view. I of course have this already penned for the big screen in my mind. The book is a front row seat to the possibility of a movie adaptation. The costumes would win Academy Awards.

This is really just the start for Jay.

I did get my ahhh moment when I found out what the title meant.

My words in this review cannot truly express how epic this book is. The size of the book is as epic as the words that fill the page. So many times I sat and thought, how did he think this shiz up.

He can make snot sound poetic.

I can’t even begin to imagine where Jay is going to take me with # 3. I went so many places in this one. There is only one direction for one character certain and then, when it is Jay writing... it isn’t that certain.

I could not read this book at my usual pace. I took a week to really read the pages and write 18 pages of notes. Most of which I can’t even use in my review for spoilers. I had to absorb and often sit in awe of the rich, exquisite beauty of his words.

Towering mountains beneath them, ancient and unchangeable. Making her feel like a brief and tiny thing; a spark escaping the rush of a twilight fire, speeding into the sky even as it burned away to nothing. Trees arrayed in gowns of bloody scarlet and shining gold, of bright rust and fading rose, like dancers awaiting the moment autumn’s music would falter. And then they would shed their finery in a flurry , sleep naked in winter’s arms, and wait for spring to wake them with warm and gentle kisses in all their softest places.

You Sir, are one hell of a writer.

* Palm holding fist *

Respect.

INTERVIEW

Michelle:  What fifteen words describe Mr Kristoff?

Jay:  A very angry nerd who is nowhere near as cool or funny as he appears.

Michelle:  What ten words would you use to describe The Lotus War Series as a whole? You can’t use dystopian, Japanese, steampunk or fantasy.... well, I got to make it harderJ

Jay:  That is kinda hard :P Ok, here goes:
Girl and griffin in epic fight to save the frackin’ world.
That’s eleven. The “frackin’” isn’t technically necessary, but can we keep it anyway?

Frack away... I kinda walked into that one, lol!

Michelle:  You have several stand out characters in Stormdancer, Yukiko, Buruu and Yoritomo. Yoritomo is a strong, intelligent, powerful , dangerous character. When he speaks, you listen. No smart mouthing back to this guy, you kiss the dirt and pray. When writing Yoritomo’s dialogue did you find yourself sitting up a bit straighter , being theatrical when you reread your writing back to yourself, feeling the power of your words, waving a cardboard chainsaw katana in the air, or head down bum up you didn’t need to 3D your words, it was all in the fingertips, the power just came naturally?

Jay:  It was mostly natural. Probably because I’m a closet megalomaniac with dreams of riding a griffin at the head of my massive army of nerds.

I’m a Roman history buff (nerdnerdnerd) and I kinda based Yoritomo on the emperor Nero - a kid who came to power too soon with all the hopes of his dynasty pinned on him, who just started testing the limits of absolute power. I really like exploring that concept – what it would do to a person.

If I was king of the world, for example, there’d be no such thing as dubstep. Everyone involved in that scene would just be rounded up and dropped into a huge Hunger Games style death match. The victor would be eaten by polar bears. On live TV.

Michelle:  I have snooped for a book trailer and have not been able to find anything. If finances were limitless, would you like to see your book trailer as animated or non animated? Go the green screen or tap Jason Chan on the shoulder and get him to slave away with ideas.

Jay:  If finances were unlimited, I’d have Katsuhiro Otomo (author/artist/director of Akira) do me an animated trailer. Jason Chan could do character design. Rage Against the Machine would reform to write a special soundtrack for it. The only place you could watch it would be on a specially built supersonic jet. And while the money tap was on, I’d buy myself some kind of rocket pack and hide it in the expenses as “sundry costs”.

Michelle:  Could you please give us a quote from book two? No names/spoilers needed.

Jay:  I’ll give you an Aristotle quote instead (nerdnerdnerd), which is kinda the basis for the whole second book, and one that I ripped off shamelessly.

“Your anger is a gift.”

Grrrr.

Michelle:  You wrote a most helpful , rather intelligent, and down right humorous way to look at writing outside of your gender, aptly titled, ‘5 Tips on Writing Outside Your Gender’.  YA Highway

Jay Kristoff
I learnt , yes , I am not a 532yr old vampire, but what stops me writing like I am a 532yr old vampire....nothing. So, we have ascertained from your mere looks, ( I’m looking at the movember facial feature you have) , you are not a 16 yr old Japanese girl, so therefore no boundaries should be in place for you to not be able to write as though you are one....right. Writing is about creating. I must tangent for one second, as I did laugh out loud at you being mistaken for Dave Grohl.....hehe!! I must admit I thought that the uber second I saw your image...back on track again. What? It was mentioned in the above article @ YA Highway.

I for one am very glad you didn’t write ‘in your own shoes’, cause I KNOW you aren’t a Griffin.....*cracking up at myself*. I do have a question coming, even I have forgotten what it is.

J.K. Rowling chose her author name to sound like a guy author. We know about the famous little boy she wrote about with the glasses and a wand ( yes, I could have said Harry Potter ) What is your opinion of authors feeling the need to have their author name hide their gender?

Jay:  It kinda sucks, but I’ve seen readers say they won’t read books written by authors of a particular gender. I once had a woman tell me “You will never know what it’s like to be a teenaged girl, so don’t pretend to.” And some authors overcome that ridonkulously (totally a word) sexist objection by adopting gender neutral names in the futile attempt to mask their identity. But this is the age of the internet – that shit’s just not going to work anymore. Why lie? Just ignore the lunatics who “don’t read books written by XXXX”.

I try to write the best I can to the truths I know. People are essentially people, no matter the gear between their legs. We all want the same things, at the heart of us. Love. Happiness. Shelter. Friendship. Chocolate ice cream. Bourbon.

Mmmm, bourbon…..

*nods* Mmmmm , bourbon:):)

Michelle:  Graphic Designer by trade for 10 years, you understand art and design. Now correct me if I am wrong, you had input into only the US cover, if my spy notes are correct? Jason Chan, the most awesome illustrator, did a downright wicked job of the US cover . It is a crowd pleaser! The fans may go crazy getting Yukiko’s sleeve art. It was a truly most wicked design he did on Yukiko, it’s going to win some hearts. Have you branded yourself with Yukiko’s artwork or something from the book? Something that would set you apart from Dave Grohl. Not that there is anything wrong with being his doppelganger. Kinda cool , really.

Jay:  I had input on the UK cover, I just had a lot more with the US cover (for which I am exceedingly grateful). I do have a STORMDANCER tattoo, designed by the same awesome artist we used to design the kanji watermarks in the US edition of the book (her name is Araki Miho). I wrote a blog post about getting it HERE 11-11-11. ( This is very funny)
If I ever hit the NYT list (lawl), I’ll get Yuki’s fox sleeve on my arm. I’ll do a vlog about it. How’s that for a promise?

Holding you to it as I know you will get there! You may want to start waxing that arm...if you are of the manly hairy variety:)

Michelle:  Your favourite word is ‘Beautiful’, awww.....niceJ
Your favourite curse word rhymes with ‘truck diesel’, hehe!! Quite original .( People go forth and snoop, ye shall find it) You like to find a positive in a negative. So do I . Keeps the mind moving forward. What is one thing that Jay dislikes with a passion? It can be anything in the whole wide world.

Jay is Australian
Jay:  Wow. Hard question. Especially since I’ve already covered dubstep.

I dislike being told I can’t do something. That I can’t write a certain way or dress a certain way or talk a certain way. People who use the word “can’t” at me are not my favourite people. Unless their reasoning is like, physics or something. If someone tells me I can’t drink a whole bottle of liquor without vomiting like the little girl in The Exorcist, yeah fair enough, I’ll wear that.

Michelle:  The most influential person and your most brutal critic is your wife. I have a friend who is an author in the UK and his wife is nicknamed ‘The Hacker’, most affectionately of course, she is his strongest and most honest critic. They have this great team thing going on. Do you have a team thing, with your wife, in regards to your writing?

Jay:  For sure. STORMDANCER wouldn’t exist without her, if only for the fact that I’d probably have starved to death writing it.

I’ll usually get her to take a look when I’m about half way through the first draft, just to see if I’m headed over any cliffs. That way if I get stuck later on, I’ll bounce ideas off her and she’ll have context. Once I’m done, I’ll give her the whole thing to read, and I edit based on her notes. Hard experience has taught me she’s right nine times out of ten – one time I didn’t listen to her, I wrote myself into an 80,000 word dead end :P

I try to keep the twists a secret so I can get a genuine reaction from her when she reads them. There’s a particularly brutal twist in book two that made her call me some very rude names, which I consider a win.

Michelle:  I have to ask. The Japanese influence that you have breathed into Stormdancer, what type of research did you do, apart from watching the flicks. How did you choose your names? Cause, we aren’t talking, Ethan, Sam, Ash here.

Jay:  Drank lots of saké. Ate pocky until my eyes bled. Had my friends yell curse words at me in Japanese while I trawled Wikipedia and watched anime.

Japanese names are infused with far more meaning than western names, so for quite a few of the characters, I chose a name that suited their personality or an aspect of their story in the book. “Yukiko” means “Rare Child” for example. I tried to instil some sense of character in each, but a few I just chose because they sounded cool.

Michelle:  What inspired, made you think of a chainsaw katana?

Jay:  Probably playing too much Warhammer 40K as a kid (nerdnerdnerd). J

Michelle:  The Battle of Los Angeles by Rage Against The Machine was your constant music while writing Stormdancer, now, truly I am not a stalker, honest, I am just being an informed interviewerJ

Could you please name three songs that you would love to see on the Stormdancer soundtrack, if there was one? I like to think when there will be one. A little bit about the why, without spoilers, if possible.

Jay:  My taste in music is extremely obnoxious. The stuff I listen to would flay the paint from the walls inside your average suburban home, and it’s kinda unsuited for a Japanese SP film. Trent Reznor and the Chemical brothers both do awesome movie soundtracks though, so if you know their numbers, hook me up. In the event we can’t get Trent on board, the entire Battle of Los Angeles album could be the soundtrack and I’ll be happy.

That’s a lame answer. But honestly, some of the CDs in my collection could make orphans of your children.

Michelle:  Again, truly I am not a stalker. Jay does not believe in happy endings. You are frightening me. You like to kill!! I feel nervous for certain characters, but I will not put any questions on you about that. Jay played air guitar for 15 minutes in his excitement upon receiving publishing news. Will you do anything special, keep a manly scrapbook of the day, base jump off a building, possibly manly squeeee from a mountain top when Stormdancer hits the shelves? Basically have you any plans or anything special you will buy for yourself as a pat on the back for job well done Jay? Not being nosey.....maybe a tadJ

Jay:  It’s not that I like killing characters. I just think that victory without sacrifice is cheap. Besides, I like the idea of people being scared for the characters they love. Makes them love those characters more.

I get three launch days (US, UK and AUS) in the space of a couple of weeks, so I need to space out the binge-drinking or else I might, you know, die. But I imagine there will be air-guitar. No base-jumping though – knowing my luck I’d die right before I became a squintillionaire.

(Totally a word).

Michelle:  Thankyou so much for your time.

Enjoy the awesomesauce that comes with being published. I am sure there will be many more cherries on top in the future for you. Bask in the glory...and I shall repeat.

Dude, you can write!

Details : Paperback, Proof Copy, 438 Pages

RATING : 5 BLOODY BRILLIANT STARS!!

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

A DYING LAND

The Shima Imperium is verging on the brink of environmental collapse; decimated by clockwork industrialization and the machine-worshippers of the Lotus Guild. The skies are red as blood, land choked with toxic pollution, wildlife ravaged by mass extinctions.

AN IMPOSSIBLE QUEST

The hunters of the imperial court are charged by their Shōgun to capture a thunder tiger—a legendary beast, half-eagle, half-tiger. But any fool knows thunder tigers have been extinct for more than a century, and the price of failing the Shōgun is death.

A SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL

Yukiko is a child of the Fox clan, possessed of a hidden gift that would see her executed by the Lotus Guild. Accompanying her father on the Shōgun’s hunt, she finds herself stranded: a young woman alone in Shima’s last wilderness, with only a furious, crippled thunder tiger for company. Even though she can hear his thoughts, even though she saved his life, all she knows for certain is he’d rather see her dead than help her.

But together, the pair will form an indomitable friendship, and rise to challenge the might of an empire.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

Tiger proudly roars.
Dragon dives and Phoenix soars.
Fox gets the chicken.

I’ve wanted to read this book for a while, I mean, come on, steampunk , dystopian, fantasy, Japanese flavour , I knew I was going to be impressed. Then Charlotte from Pan Macmillan, the little goddess, dropped the book in my lap.

Knock me over with a feather.....stunning, incredible, and a whole bag of words that mean all things spectacular. *waves the Australian flag in the air* Yes, Jay Kristoff is Australian and a debut author. Boy did he arrive with a smashing entrance.

Holy mac and cheese, there is absolutely nothing I don’t adore about this book. Jay is up there with the big guns in writing. Stormdancer is a most outstanding read. Jay Kristoff’s writing is breathtaking. Your mind just washes over each page and like a paintbrush dipped in water and brushed over one of those books with the invisible picture, his words reveal amazing, beautifully painted scenes, to your minds eye. The attention to detail is impressive. The colourful use of words to describe, is stunning.

Costume designers would have a freakin’ awesome time with the characters clothing and gear in this book. I think they would be like kids in a candy store.

'Stormdancer' will play through your mind as you read it, like you are watching a movie. A 3D one. It really does come alive.

You, the reader will be gasping, gripping your book at the sheer terror you will feel with the villain Yoritomo the Ninth Shogun of the Kazumitsu Dynasty. Before you know it you will be face planting it in the dirt , shaking in your boots hoping to the Gods you don’t have to commit seppuka. Yoritomo, he evokes that much respect/terror, in those he commands an audience with. I felt like he was commanding an audience with me as the reader. He is a fierce villain. Jay will make you ‘feel’ Yoritomo’s power.

“If you defy me again, I will take everything you have left . Everything.” A low growl. “ And I will hurt it first.”

Jay’s words will bring a tear to your eye, your hand will lay over your heart, you will know when that moment is, and he will make you want to fight. I was in my own virtual world fighting alongside Yukiko. It was a bit safer with those epic chainsaw katanas in action. I was pretty kickass , I must say. * wipes sweat off the brow * I did want to do one of those arm held straight out, hand palm up, upside down waves that tells my opponent , ‘bring it on’ in my fighting power stance.

Frightening, yet awesome!!

Yukiko is very mature for her age. Her father Masaru, the legendary Black Fox of Shima, Master of Hunters gets on the lotus pipe a bit too much and likes to drink and gamble. Yukiko is straight down the line, a strong character, she is only sixteen years old. She will make mistakes that will cost her dearly. I love her to bits.

Yoritomo wakes up to announce that he wants a thunder tiger aka a griffin aka an arashitora. They have been extinct for years. You will die if you fail to bring him what he requests, so either way it isn’t looking good. This is where the story takes its direction. Masaru, Akihito, Kasumi and Yukiko must find this beast and bring him to Yoritomo.

Let the adventure begin. Bring on the Thunder Child.

The title of this book, and the series title , ‘The Lotus War’ have great meaning in this first book. The blood lotus, and it’s various uses, are sucking the life out of the planet. The air is clogged with poison, the sun too bright to not wear a pair of awesome goggles. Breathers are needed, if you can afford them, to breathe easier. Not everybody is willing to sit by and watch the planet die for the sake of power.

“The Thunder Child ploughed north through the fields of burgundy cloud, buffeted by the gentle hands of the summer breeze. Its propellers hummed, gears and pistons singing a metallic dirge as it vomited streams of poison into the Shima Skies.”

“What the hells are you doing out here?” Yukiko yelled.
“Being alive!” he shouted over the rolling thunder. “Alive and breathing!”

I love the sub characters, Kin the Artificer the engineer, and Hiro the Iron Samurai. Jay you played with my heart in all kinds of wrong....lol!! Michi, Aisha, Kaiji, Kaori, wise Daichi and the oni....yes, I shall include them, are all characters playing awesome roles.

I love all the names of Jay’s characters. They really do roll off the tongue. This book really grasped the Japanese influence and held on, you never forgot these characters were Japanese...hai!  In some books you know the character is Japanese, but you can forget, the influence doesn’t stay with the story. This felt very real, not fictional at all. These characters really come to life. The world Jay has built for us, feels very ever present.

US COVER
The Glossary, I didn’t realise was in this book until I got half way through the book and I went to see how many pages were in the book and then I was like ‘oh lookie, here you are’ tucked at the back of my proof copy. To be honest I had been reading and enjoying and thinking, ‘I need to google this word’, but no, it is all there, simplified terms broken up into ‘General Terms’, ‘Clothing’, ‘Weapons’, and ‘Religion’. I personally would like to see it in the front of the book so that readers give it a read before they start the book. It really is worth a preread.

The steampunk is visually fantastically detailed. Think more...much, much, more than the steampunk you are accustomed to. In one part I think Jay even goes a little sci-fi steampunk, dare I say that?? Jay really does take it a step further with his Artificer and Guildsmen.

I actually got myself into quite a frazzle when it came to writing this review, I swear Raijin , the God of Thunder and Lightning zapped my brain. My words feel too simple for the beauty of the outstanding writing Jay has filled Stormdancer’s pages with, although I do have to thank Raijin for creating the thunder tigers.

So now I come to Buruu. I absolutely adore Buruu. Jay has written a very special character who will win the hearts of everybody. Yukiko and her arashitora, it is a very special bond. You could wipe me with the floor with how much I loved these two and wring me out.

“We will endure.”

A final message to Jay, you sir, have brought the picnic basket to the table for us to savour the flavour of this most awesome reading experience. I have devoured and am licking my fingers for more.

Yes, I do now hold these words in my hand , yes, it has now become a fist.

Dude, you can write!
