#BOOKREVIEW - BLAZE by LAURIE BOYLE CROMPTON @lbcrompton

Goodreads Description:
Blaze is tired of spending her life on the sidelines, drawing comics and feeling invisible. She's desperate for soccer star Mark to notice her. And when her BFF texts Mark a photo of Blaze in sexy lingerie, it definitely gets his attention. After a hot date in the back of her minivan, Blaze is flying high, but suddenly Mark's feelings seem to have been blasted by a freeze-ray gun, and he dumps her. Blaze gets her revenge by posting a comic strip featuring uber-villain Mark the Shark. Mark then retaliates by posting her "sext" photo, and, overnight, Blaze goes from Super Virgin Girl to Super Slut. That life on the sidelines is looking pretty good right about now...

MARISSA'S REVIEW:
Blaze....comic book aficionado - Marvel Comics to be exact!  She spends her weekends ferrying around her brother and his soccer team mates which gives her ample opportunity to ogle their coach Mark. He just happens to be at her school and is ultra cool.  Blaze on the other hand...pretty average in the social department.

The beginning of BLAZE had me a little "what the" - mostly because I'm not big on comics and Crompton has cleverly written Blaze as a comic nerd with the way she speaks and thinks in comic captions! Once I got my head into full blown comic-con mode it was easy to read Blaze's character.

A nerd - Yes!  A girl with a crush - Always!  A girl that gets in over her head?.....ABSOLUTELY!  It didn't help that her friend Amanda is fairly useless in the loyalty department and doesn't exactly think about any repercussions her actions might have.

She goes from average to cool and then slams downs the scale to uber slut in a very short amount of time.  A scantily clad photo does the rounds online and Blaze becomes the biggest pariah in the schools history.

I did find the obsession amongst the girls with wanting to have some communication from guys within mere hours of seeing them a tad bit irritating.....more that I felt OMG girls get a life!!  But I just popped into my 16yo daughters room where her and and friends are hanging out and asked them if that is what they would do......and the answer was -"yes if the guy was hot and we would normally never think he'd pay us attention" !!!  Well there you have it !!  I didn't go through that during high school - our year at school was pretty awesome and I was friends with cliques everywhere.

Blaze grows throughout and there's a very defining moment in the last quarter of the book that really makes  you sit up and think - "This girl's gonna be OK after all".

ENJOY!

  1. I really loved the ending of this book as Blaze grew and learned a lot. I did think it was a bit overstuffed although I'm not sure which plot line I'd cut.

  2. I really enjoyed Blaze. I loved her brother and his friends! I also really liked the way Crompton handled the bullying in a realistic way even though Blaze's character was sort of silly and light. Great review :)

  3. You should read Geekomancy by Michael Underwood, it's like this but a little more adult.
