From the bestselling author of The Secret of Ella and Micha comes a mesmerizing novel of fate, friendship, and the healing power of love . . .

For Kayden, suffering in silence was the only way to survive. If he was lucky, he could keep his head down, do as he was told, and make it through the day. But one night it seemed like his luck-and his life-might finally end . . . until an angel named Callie appeared just in time to rescue him.

Callie has never believed in luck. Not since her twelfth birthday when everything was taken from her. After the worst was over, she locked up her feelings and vowed never to tell anyone what happened. Now, six years later, she continues to struggle with the painful secret that threatens to consume her.

When fate lands Kayden and Callie at the same college, Kayden is determined to get to know the beautiful girl who changed his destiny. Quiet and reserved, Callie still fears letting anyone else into her world. But Kayden is certain that Callie has come back into his life for a reason. And the more he tries to be a part of her life, the more he realizes that, this time, it's Callie who needs to be saved . . .

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

“In the existence of our lives, there is a single coincidence that brings us together and for a moment, our hearts beat as one.”

When I started reading this book, I knew going in it was an incredibly popular read. The more I read, the more I realized, this book is a simmering tale. What I mean by that is the story is on low heat, we discover things about both lead characters that have broken them, but Jessica leads us in slowly.

We read more.

We meet Seth and Luke, both best friends of our lead characters. Both friends are knowing in what their friend has gone through and is still facing.

Seth is a beautiful guy. He knows how to talk to Callie. They have their list to accomplish.

“You’ve come so far, my little Callie girl.”

“But you’re you.” I sigh, discouraged. “I trust you.”

“Yeah, but I had to earn it.”

Luke has his own upbringing issues. I’m interested to know more about him. I do know he gets a book. I look forward to reading it.

We read more.

You begin to understand more why this book is a slow burn, Jessica is bringing more heat to her story and I don’t mean the sexual kind, I mean the unveiling of the impact of the destruction their lives have had on them.

Callie is brave. Both Kayden and herself are hiding deep pain.

This felt like a real time line, for a book. Both characters are living their lives, but keeping a deep secret. They can’t talk it out with their mothers. They can only let it burn inside them.

They deal with their own secret in a self destructive way. It felt real. The toll this has on a persons mind, is heart breaking.

Abuse is a terrible thing, especially when inflicted on a young child. Innocence is lost to those you should be able to trust. It can’t be taken back. There is no quick fix. The mental damage is done.

When it continues repeatedly, you wonder how that child can escape it. Try to live a normal life on the outside.

A heart breaking tale, albeit a little slow coming. The build up creeps up on you until the brutal finale. You can’t help feeling something is going to happen to shake this story up even more.

Beautifully told to the point of poignant.

Michelle

  1. It sounds like a really intense book. Even if it's popular I confess that it's the first time I hear about this one. It's nice to see that the story is well led and that you can discover so many things about the characters. Great review!

  3. Sounds incredible, Michelle. I've been wanting to read this whole series but haven't had the time. I'm glad you loved its slow burn. I know it's a powerful read if it's dealing with abuse. Nice review!
