Plagued by a war between magic and technology, Atlanta has never been so deadly. Good thing Kate Daniels is on the job.

Kate Daniels may have quit the Order of Merciful Aid, but she’s still knee-deep in paranormal problems. Or she would be if she could get someone to hire her. Starting her own business has been more challenging than she thought it would be—now that the Order is disparaging her good name, and many potential clients are afraid of getting on the bad side of the Beast Lord, who just happens to be Kate’s mate.

So when Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. Turns out this is not an isolated incident, and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it—fast, or the city and everyone dear to her might pay the ultimate price . . .

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

The husband and wife writing team of Ilona Andrews are keeping Kate uber busy in this installment.

The girl needs a pedicure and a well earned spa treatment with the amount of busy, busy saving and wielding of Slayer her sword about like the kick ass chickie babe she is.

I really enjoyed this installment, villains are popping up making Kate work her fanny off to save those she loves and basically the world.

Yes! There is heavy duty shiz hitting the pavement and it’s a killer for those of you who aren’t human.

Ghastek is fainting. Not a good thing when he is powering a rogue vampire.

Kate is non-stop. She got herself a to-do list a mile long.

Bridge Trolls, sleep bombs, escaping kid, sacrifices, devices, and Ascanio the fifteen year old Italian with a penchant for ménages... the list goes on.

Kate has got herself some paying work at Cutting Edge her new business. One thing leads to another and the world of magic users lives are threatened.

Kate to the rescue.

Along the way Kate will find out more about her family tree and question Curran’s motives.

Kate has her hands full with The Lighthouse Keepers and she isn’t going to stand for their shiz.

Saiman makes an appearance and has been suitably punished by Curran.

Speaking of Curran, I am beginning to feel like the Ilona Andrews team can’t be fussed with intimate scenes. LOL! Seriously...I almost feel like they want to get it over and done with.

Quick!

I am rather baffled at this.

Adult Urban Fantasy. Will we ever get a nice, reasonably lengthy sex scene?

Not that I am a perv. I am not. But, how do I word this without sounding like a voyeur?

Curran and Kate are quite formal with each other. They love each other. I want to give these two a good shake. They find it easier to belt each other up.

I kicked him in the head. The pressure of the past forty-eight hours rampaged inside me like a storm, and I’d sunk all of it into the kick. The impact hit his jaw at an angle. Curran staggered back. I spun and snapped another kick. He dodged. Another. Curran moved forward and right. My kick missed by a hair. He grabbed my shin with his left hand, clamping it between his arm and his side, and swept my other leg from under me. Nice. A kung fu takedown.

I fell back. The pavement slapped my back. I rolled back up and hammered an uppercut to his chin. Hitting him in the body was useless. Might as well pummel a tank. The head was my only chance.

Curran snarled. Blood dripped from a cut on his cheek. I’d opened a gash with my kick.

I threw a left hook. He knocked my arm out of the way and shoved me back. I twisted out of the way on pure instinct- damn it, he was fast - dropped into a crouch, and swiped his legs from under him. He jumped up, avoiding the kick, and I took a knee to the head.

Ow.

They did give me some words of endearment. Sugar woogums and His Furriness and a bath tub scene.

I can see Kate loves Julie and will give her life for her if that is what it takes to keep Julie safe and well. Kate loves Grendel. Kate will do anything for her friends, pretty much anything for the whole magic community to keep them safe. Kate loves Curran.

She is a heroine. She fights the good fight.

BUT!!

When it comes to Kate and Curran...it is so darn methodical. Sure they get naked...finally, but...

What is it that I am missing?

I want. NEED to see Curran really let loose on his emotions. He is wound tight like a spring. I get that he is THE BEAST LORD. He has responsibilities and he has to assume a persona in front of his pack and Kate must now show only strength in front of the pack.

As far as the urban fantasy world that Ilona Andrews team have built...I love it. It is dark and gritty and full of villains and intrigue.

The books took off from book 3 for me, personally. Kate gets better and better. I just need Curran to keep up.

He is THE BEAST LORD!

He takes quite a back seat in each book and normally really surfaces near the end where they normally team up to fight evil villains.

He did pop up a bit more in this one.

I want him up front and center more. I want to see him let those emotions out more, not just getting growly...but release the Curran that is only for Kate's eyes.

It is very much the Kate show this series and I get that as it is called the Kate Daniels series, but...

Dang I am doing a lot of buts.

I am excited to know more about the sub characters that entered this installment.

Andrea gets some great air time with Raphael nowhere in her sight.

Solution , give these two their own book, Gunmetal Magic # 5.5.

Always a fast paced ride with Kate at the helm. Never a dull moment in her life. I am addicted and shall keep riding the Kate train until it stops.

  1. I am almost done with Lords of Deliverance & working my way through Elemental Assassins. I have some more series to binge on but I just looked at March and I'm free! I should schedule this series in that month. I feel tortured with every review you have up, it's so good!
