Following the unexpected death of her father, 18-year-old Layken is forced to be the rock for both her mother and younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she's losing hope.
Enter Will Cooper: The attractive, 21-year-old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for slam poetry and a unique sense of humor. Within days of their introduction, Will and Layken form an intense emotional connection, leaving Layken with a renewed sense of hope.
Not long after an intense, heart-stopping first date, they are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together, and the secret that keeps them apart.

BOOK REVIEW in verse by Michelle

$3.00 to the emcee.
I read to the crowd.
I slam from my heart.
It is how I feel,
I slam it loud.

I am the sac.

A girl in a U-Haul she moved into Will's street.
She captured his attention
He was caught complete.
Kel the brother, was Caulder’s best medicine
Until the record needle screeched across the page
Eeeeccccccccchhhhhhh!
He had to decide what he couldn’t lose.
He was her heartache
She was his number three
It just had to be.

Will lives across the street
How can they not meet?
He slams at Club N9Ne
His brother is Caulder ,only nine.
Will had to decide what he couldn’t lose
He had to choose
She was his number three
It shouldn’t have to be
The rules of life are not meant to be easy.

Caulder is Will’s number one
He cannot run.
He had a Lake for a few days
Until the record needle screeched across the page
Eeeeeeeccccchhhhh!
The Lake banks broke crying tears of rage
She cried all over the page.

Eddie the wise one
Pink Balloons made me undone
The friend, when you need one.
I became a lake full of tears
For Eddie and the life she had lived.
She has no regrets
Gavin has cancelled all those debts.

Halloween costumes be buggered
For the love of a mother
For two little boys to shine
To grasp all this at the age of nine.
The Principal's words
She was lucky the tongue was mightier than the sword.

“I used to love the ocean .
Everything about her.
....So you can keep your ocean,
I’ll take the Lake.”

I got schooled this year.
By everyone in this book.
By a backward boy and his mate
By a mother , a boy, and a best friend.
I bawled.
I. Bawled.

I got Slammed.

The Avett Brothers lyric quotes are throught out the chapters of Slammed. Chapter 11 - If its The Beaches.

  1. OMG Michelle! I love you and this review! Beautiful and I wish I were that creative to write something like this. SLAMMED is definitely in my top 10 reads. Will and Lake moved me so much. The strenght they each showed was so admireable. You'll have to read Point of Retreat because that'll make you bawl your eyes out too. WONDERFUL REVIEW!

    1. Hey Cimm,

I felt it brewing in me when I was 2/3rds way through Slammed. So I started dropping notes on what was brewing in my brain. Just in case I used it. Then I wasn't so sure. I don't know the rules of these things , so I figured just write and not worry about the rules of it all:S I'm sure I broke them all, hehe!!
