I would like to welcome Australian author M.J. Hearle , creator of the Winter's Saga series, to Novels On The Run and thank him for taking the time to answer my questions, and write such wonderful books.

I have this wonderful interview below, but , I also have a couple signed goodies to giveaway. Thankyou to Pan Macmillan , Australia and M.J. Hearle. I will be giving away a signed Winter's Light poster..oooo ..nice!! and a signed paperback copy of Winter's Light....even nicer!!! Lovely keepsakes to treasure.

Hot off the press...so to speak....M.J's Teaser Trailer

He made it himself and what an AWESOME trailer!!

Michelle:   In 10 words or less, what words would you use to describe, Winter’s Shadow and Winter’s Light?

M.J. :

Winter’s Shadow
A paranormal tale of love, death, sacrifice and cats.

Winter’s Light
A perilous journey undertaken to save a soul.

My Review - Winter's Shadow      My Review - Winter's Light

Michelle:   I love to put song vid clips on my interviews that matches the character or characters relationship. It’s, a great way of also hearing new songs and the songs connection to the character through the authors eyes.
Could you please give me a song that represents , Winter, Blake, Sam, Jasmine, Winter's relationship with Blake, Winter's friendship with Sam?

M.J.

Winter
Sia – Breathe Me

Blake
 Pearl Jam – Nothingman’

Sam
The Pixies – Where is My Mind?

Jasmine
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Cheated Hearts

Winter’s relationship with Blake
The Cure – In Between Days

Winter’s friendship with Sam

David Bowie - Changes

Michelle:   After doing my regulation interview Q snooping to make sure I am asking a fresh question to an author, I came across an interview you did at http://fictionalfantasy.com/an-interview-with-mj-hearle/. The question being ‘What was your inspiration for Winter’s Shadow? Your response being:

‘Somewhat appropriately a cemetery was the inspiration behind Winter’s Shadow. I started jogging a few years ago when I noticed my metabolism wasn’t doing a very good job of keeping up with my love of pizza and chocolate. It was either give up the junk food or start exercising, so I began to jog. One day, my route took me through Waverly Cemetery which overlooks Sydney’s Bronte beach. It was just on sunset and I thought I was alone in the cemetery when I noticed a teenage girl taking photographs of the tombstones. As I passed by she took a photograph of me and thus gave the inspiration for the story. I began thinking what would happen if when that girl had her photograph developed there was a hint of something strange in the picture. Something supernatural. Not a ghost or a vampire or a werewolf but something infinitely more terrible and mysterious.’

Could you please finish off this sentence, ‘if I hadn’t gone for that jog and noticed the teenage girl........................’’

M.J.  :  ......... Blake would have been a vampire, Claudette wouldn’t exist, and the Dead Lands would be waiting for another author to discover them.

Michelle:   Could you please give me, if possible, a non spoiler quote from the third book in the Winter Saga series. No names necessary, to tie us over until it is released.

M.J. : Winter paused before the city gates. She could feel the Skivers amassing in the darkness behind her. Hundreds of them, if not thousands.
Sufficiently teased? J
Michelle: Thankyou :)

Michelle:   Could you please give me 5 words that describe each:  Winter’s personality in Winter’s Shadow and where her character’s personality is at in Winter’s Light.

M.J. :  Winter's personality in Winter's Shadow :   Innocent, drawn to mystery .

Winter's personality in Winter's Light :  Broken soul, ready to fight.

Michelle:   Could you please give me 5 words that describe, Sam and Blake :

M.J. :  Sam -  At war with himself

M.J. : Blake - Lost in darkness, seeking light

Michelle:   As the creator of Sam and Blake. If given the choice  would you choose to be a Sam type character or a Blake type character and why?

M.J. :  Blake. I suffer from hermit-like tendencies so shutting myself off in a mansion to listen to music and write all day wouldn’t be terribly disagreeable. Sam is far too active. What with fighting the Demori and all, I can’t imagine he has a lot of down time.

Michelle:  Do you have more fun writing the present day chapters or the past history chapters and why?

M.J. : I enjoyed writing the past history chapters because I didn’t have to worry about any bridging material. I could just jump into Madeleine’s (or Lamara’s) story at a particular dramatic point and then leave again before the events settled down. It was like skipping through someone else’s novel to find the most exciting parts.

Michelle:  I did read in my snooping for fresh questions that you enjoyed writing about Madeleine and Ariman. I think you were right when you said that there was a book in these two characters. Is there any of your characters/couples that you would consider writing a novella/book for?

M.J. :  Funny you should ask that as I’m currently about ten thousand words into a novella told from Claudette’s (Blake’s sister) perspective. I’m planning on releasing the novel as a digital only download for e-readers. Claudette’s a character that seems to have caught readers imagination so I’m grateful for the opportunity to explore a bit of her history. Especially as we only catch glimpses of her in Winter’s Shadow and Winter’s Light. As for Madeleine and Ariman, I definitely have more material which I suspect will pop up in the third novel. Ariman in particular fascinates me.

Ooo my psychic powers have kicked in again....

Michelle:   Thinking big here, I saw that you had an earlier interest in film making, what movie Director/s or should I be saying Producer/s do you think could bring to life your books.
(I separate both books as the same director/producer isn’t always used on sequels due to the storyline.)

M.J. : Winter’s Shadow I’m a bit of a dreamer (no surprise) and often I’ll entertain myself with fantasies about the Winter Tales blowing up to a Twilight or Hunger Games level. If this ever happened, Hollywood would probably come a calling. It would be easy to take a big cheque and relinquish the rights to the story but as you’ve mentioned I come from a filmmaking background so I think I’d probably do something crazy like insist on directing the film version myself. If someone’s going to screw up my book I’d rather it be me.

M.J. : Winter’s Light Having directed the first book I’d relinquish the reins for the sequel and adopt a creative producer role. Kind of like George Lucas did with Empire Strikes Back. I think Sofia Coppola could do a good directing job. She’s an unconventional choice but I think she’d nail the melancholy feel of the book. If she wasn’t available I’d probably go to Alfonso Cuarón. I love his version of Great Expectations. Not to mention Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Michelle:   A fun question. Is there anything you do special on the day when a book of yours is released onto the shelves in stores?

M.J. : I don’t, and I should. You’ve inspired me to create a tradition. On May 1st (when Winter’s Light is available) I think I’ll mark the occasion by doing something I’ve never done before. Maybe eat a meal I’ve never tried before, go rock-climbing, or take a yoga class.

Michelle:   Thankyou M.J. for answering my questions, much appreciated and we at Novels On The Run wish you all the success with your books:D

M.J. : My pleasure, thank you for your questions. They were very creative and I had a lot of fun answering them.

Michelle
