In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

BOOK REVIEW:

I had heard sooo much hype about ‘Divergent’, I just simply had to pre order it. I am a lover of dystopian genre. I loved ‘The Hunger Games’ series by Suzanne Collins.

Goodreads has 5 stars being slapped all over it in a frenzy by reviewers. I am going to rate ‘Divergent’, 4.5 stars. Nobody throw pillows at my head please....* ducks*, just in case.

Divergent is one badass thick book, 487 pages. I really enjoyed this book and I totally believe that Insurgent, # 2 will be amazing as the latter 1/3rd part of this book did give me the ‘wow’ factor, it just took off, literally in this direction that had me clenching my hands together for more.

Divergent, the main part of the book focuses on the faction Dauntless and the training , if you can call beating the crap out of each other training. I can see how the Dauntless faction has lost its way with Eric as leader, but that is how the story gets its direction...where it is headed.

I think I wanted to understand bad ass Eric’s character more. After all these are all just teenagers running Dauntless. What makes a teenager of 18 so intent on the path he was travelling.

Dauntless faction is one hard ass lesson in training. Nothing comes easy or without pain or violence.

Four , is the lead guy I can see becoming this softer, warmer guy towards Tris. He is just so darn tough, a bit of a puzzle with the way he handles Tris in this book. His ability to ‘feel’ has almost been suffocated out of him.

I found difficulty in the love of the 2 main characters, Four and Tris. I think that will come in book 2 for me as Four spent a lot of this book being ‘cold’, distant , with peeps of a caring side. I understand why...but it made it hard for me to believe the sudden I love you comments.

For 2/3rds of the book I am the reader watching Tris and her fellow initiates become tougher, stronger, learning, failing. Tris may be small but she is smart and brave ... and she has something the others don’t, she has a secret that could cost her life .

I found ‘Divergent’, to be a well written , exciting, well paced and at times violent read , with little sympathy for its characters.

Roth has built a world of factions that are getting a shake down, I can only imagine the excitement, suspense, pain, loss that will come in Insurgent ... I am looking forward to it.

  1. If you like this book as well as the Hunger Games I highly suggest the you read the Maze Runner Trilogy by James Dashner. They are absolutely fantastic books with the last one set to be released on October 11, 2011.
