BOOK REVIEW - CRESCENDO by BECCA FITZPATRICK - HUSH HUSH # 2

By: Becca Fitzpatrick
Published By: Simon and Schuster
Released : Available Now
Details : Paperback, 427 Pages

RATING:  4.5 STARS!! PATCH...SIGH!!

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

Nora should have known her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described as anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Patch is starting to pull away, and Nora can't figure out if it's for her best interest or if his interest has shifted to her arch-enemy Marcie Millar. Not to mention that Nora is haunted by images of her father and she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to him that night he left for Portland and never came home.

The farther Nora delves into the mystery of her father's death, the more she comes to question if her Nephilim blood line has something to do with it as well as why she seems to be in danger more than the average girl. Since Patch isn't answering her questions and seems to be standing in her way, she has to start finding the answers on her own. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch, or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?

BOOK REVIEW:

I can't tell you how much I had been waiting for 'Crescendo'. I absolutely adored 'Hush, Hush' and Patch was my dangerous, in control, smexilicious, smart ass lead character. I was running in circles when I finished 'Hush, Hush'.  I had PABD which apparently = Post Awesome Book Depression...lol!!

BUT!!!!!! ......Well I just have to say it....Patch has lost his 'mojo' in 'Crescendo'. As much as it pains me to say it, and it does pain me. If you were wanting smexi Patch from 'Hush, Hush' well he was there in a teeny way. Now let me explain. There were reasons for him being unable to be that guy and I unfortunately in my mind have made Hush, Hush almost souly about Patch which is not right...lol!!! My brain was one tracked and I was expecting Patch to be front and centre in this book the way he was in Hush, Hush. But as we know by now he is no longer a fallen angel, he is now Nora's guardian angel and guardian angels have to behave themselves or they get sent by the archangels to hell. Hence why Patch has lost his mojo , to a certain extent. I must selfishly admit I missed 'that Patch' dearly from Crescendo.

Putting that aside ( which was very hard to do) there are great "POW's "in this book. I love to have my theories and predict what is going to happen in books. Well I didn't see any of them coming. I have to admit, Becca knocked my socks off with her advertised twist/ cliffhanger at end of book. WOW!!!!!!! Wicked ending. It was more like you are free falling until 'Tempest' is released.

If I was to be truly honest and as much as it pains me to say, as I am a Becca Fitzpatrick fan,  I did feel a tad let down by Patch not being around much in this book. Or around where he should be. I understand why, but I missed Patch. I missed his dangerous side, his smart ass character. He had another role in this book.

I think the best way for me to think about this was how most of us got to read all 4 Twilight books back to back in like a week ( many fans did do this) . We would have noticed after Twilight bk 1 if we had to wait a year to get New Moon and found no Edward hardly we would have been peeved a bit , then another year for Eclipse for Edward to be back in the book. But we got to read all 4 like within a week for most of us. So Edward not being around lasted like a day for some of us. What I am trying to say is if  in 2 years time we stumbled across Hush, Hush series and we had 3 or 4 books to read back to back...Crescendo would be like New Moon where a fave character was missing or not as good . That feeling might only last a day or two until we opened Tempest and our Patch was back. But!! this is not the case so we have to be feeling a bit let down for like a year LOL!!! ..until Tempest and hopefully we back on track. If any of this making sense??? Hey the beauty of reading a series of books back to back.

Vee , I liked much better in Crescendo. She had some funny one liners. We were introduced to new characters, Scott and Black Hand. Rixon is back. Marcie is well Marcie, groan.  Sooooo annoying but that is the beauty of  Becca's writing. Marcie makes you feel like giving her a good hard slap and that means as a writer Becca has done her job nicely making us loathe the girl. Sometimes I wondered about the point of one character as well * scratches head* was it more a decoy for our minds.

I can't express how blind sided you will be with the POW's/ twist. Really well done Becca!!! When you think you have it worked out.......POW!!!!!!

Crescendo is essentially Nora's story , a mystery to solve, but I found sometimes I was a bit let down as the reader by Nora's jealousy rather than smexual tension.   I want to say things about story line but it would give away so I can't. Did I question a couple storyline things , yes.

Is Crescendo better than Hush, Hush... Well if I broke it down. POWS!!!! Crescendo was awesome , Patch's character not in a long shot. But that's what I will call New Moon Syndrome. Sometimes a character gets sacrificed but comes back to make up for it in the next book.  You do get to find out something about Patch......

The book cover is of course gorgeous. I can't wait to see what Tempest cover looks like.

I am hoping for great things with 'Tempest'' . I hope it heads the way I think it's going to...... with that cliffhanger twist it sounds like it could be a very exciting book.

  1. OMG!!!

Your review totally mirrors the one I'm going to post, soon! I felt SO let down that Patch wasn't in it. I'm terribly sorry to say, but Patch is the drawcard for the series - just like Edward was/is! I wanted to know more about angels...I couldn't give a stuff about Nephilim, sorry to say! Yeah, I felt a bit bummed...not looking forward to Tempest as much as I should be, especially if its like this again :( Hush Hush is still my favourite, though :) I gave it 4 stars, too!

  2. Hi Emma,

Darn I felt guilty writing all that as I wanted sooooo bad to fly the flag high as I adored Hush, Hush and was hoping like madly for Crescendo and Patch to be the Patch I adored. LOL!!! I thought the dreams Patch invaded/or made for Nora were the perfect place for our Patch to appear....sigh I think Tempest will bring our guy back to us as he will be back in control and on the run from the Archangels. I just wanted Patch to be saving Nora or something in Crescendo. That fleshy wound could have been something more and suspensful...darn I feel kinda muddled about Crescendo as the POWs were great!!! but our boy wasn't:(

    Now we sit we wait...till 2011 :D
