A gritty New Adult drama about a young woman’s self-destructive quest to find purpose, self-worth, and love in a broken world.

My name is Elise Duchamp. I’m twenty-three years old and I’m known as the town whore.

No, not the kind who exchanges sexual favors for money. The other kind. The kind who gives it all away for free, whenever and however she likes. I am that girl. The one everyone whispers about and the one none of the girls seem to like, because all of their boyfriends either want to sleep with me or already have. Promiscuity is my thing—the kind that slowly, violently turns my insides black, but gives me something I need.

All things considered, I’m not completely reckless. I’m safe, and contrary to popular opinion, I do have a heart. I live in a world of careless choices, and with those choices come careless people. I cannot judge them, because I am one of them. I too bow down to the altar of the self-serving. I am not a good friend. I am not and never could be anyone’s girlfriend. I’m convinced any goodness in me shriveled up and died long ago.

But I am a replacement. That is something I know how to be, and this is a story of the lengths I’d go to in order to keep it that way.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

This was my first book in any of Rachael’s works.

Elise works at Stella’s diner. Jay is her boss and a really lovely man.

He knows more than he lets on.

Natalie is another waitress at the diner and she has a boyfriend , Nate.

Elise is a character that has had difficult teen age years. Her father is abusive with words and her mother was dying of cancer. I had a little trouble feeling sympathy for Elise. I think I needed more detail to convince me of why Elise is the way she is as an adult.

Elise is a free whore, essentially. She lives in the small town of Gig Harbor. She sets her sights on attached men. They welcome her with open arms. I felt like Elise was more a sex addict rather than her reasoning's for what she did. I was a little unsure of Christian's character. I didn't really get to understand any of the lads in Elise's whoring life, so his behavior towards Elise was kind of random.

I found it very hard to sympathize with her. I needed more work in that area to convince me to feel sorry for her. She had an odd way of blaming others rather than herself. She hardcore set out to seduce and sleep with these men. She had regulars. It wasn’t about being paid and making money for that trip to Paris. I really didn’t totally understand why she chose as an adult to take this step and only commit to working in a diner and sleeping with attached men. I know she had her french studies?? , but ...

I understand what Rachael wanted to portray to me , but personally I didn’t grasp and believe it. I wanted to. I understood the type of character she wanted Elise to be. But I floundered a bit with not thinking Elise needed to grow up and take control and be a better person.

Ryder was the character that kept me reading, he was a really amazing, different character to read in a book. He is essentially a tree hugger, he comes from money, but asks nothing of his parents. He lives in a tent or cabin , depending on the season and has some pretty great friends of a similar nature. He is twenty four years old and is a free spirit. He is intelligent and could be anything, but he has chosen to just ride each day as it comes and surf life and let each wave take his free spirit where it may.

He is not materialistic in any way. He has a good soul. But sometimes I thought he was too understanding of Elise. I wanted him to get angry. He did get a little ...

I thought this story had awesome potential, but for me personally it hit a bit short of the mark of being really wow. I wanted to feel what I was supposed to feel from this story.

But, others may totally disagree with me and that is ok.

Elise is twenty three years old. I felt her back story was a bit patchy. Like I needed more filled in. She is intelligent, but she chooses this path of existence, which had me confused a little.

Why didn’t she go after single men? Why were they all attached? Why not go to a nightclub in another town and let her hair down with single dudes of her age? She chose a town where all the guys lived and people were connected.

She is gorgeous, she could have worked anywhere, but she chose a diner. She had the body, everything going in her favour. She was young. But she chose to whore herself and she liked it.

I know I am supposed to believe she is very broken and damaged, but it didn’t come across like that to me.

She chose to break friendships and relationships up. She was destructive and I get what Rachael is showing me about her parents but it still didn’t convince me.

Jay was her father figure now, but he was an enabler to an extent. Guys are guys, if you are a hot chick and you are seducing a man, the chances are they will throw caution to the wind and nab that piece of ass being offered. I thought a couple times he almost made excuses for her behavior, rather than sitting her down and finding out her issues and sending her to a psychiatrist.

Yeah, I am left scratching my head a little. I did still think it was a good read. I wondered why she didn’t live in a bigger place where her behavior would be more under the radar. A small town , people talk. Word gets around.

Even though Brad was just as bad as the others, it still takes two to tango and he was a reasonably nice guy, in a two timing way. Gahh!

An ok read for me that I felt had much greater potential... for me personally. I am but one opinion. I understand this is a stand alone read. I think maybe it needed to be longer for me to appreciate the story Rachael was telling me.

  3. I've read two of her books, books 1 & 3 of her Preservation series, I didn't like the first one but the second one I loved. She does have a knack for writing characters like Elise, someone hard to relate to or empathize with.

  4. I think I will find this book a tad confrontational, but I am intrigued.
