Down in Atlanta, tempers – and temperatures – are about to flare…

As a mercenary who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen her share of occupational hazards. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow across Atlanta like a tide. But once every seven years, a flare comes, a time when magic runs rampant. Now Kate’s going to have to deal with problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.

When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta’s paramilitary clan of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes much more at stake. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest – and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can’t stop the cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive…

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Sometimes life just kept punching you in the teeth, no matter how many times you got up. “The pain gets better with time.” I told her. “It always hurts, but it gets better.”

Kate and I have become very comfy with each other after this installment. I am getting the world that has gone to the shitter with its nasty creatures making their way through to the streets of Atlanta.

Magic has got a bad case of the hiccups in this book and it is coming in waves, getting more inconsistent with its timing.

A dark and gritty world where Kate finds herself embroiled in saving someone’s ass all the time, including her own on more than one occasion, which can then lead to Curran saving her ass.

There is still not the romance that I am hungering for. Curran has taken a bit of a subtle under the radar step that Kate has only just found out about. I was a bit none the wiser myself until the werehyenas brought it to our attention. We do get playful banter.

He grinned. “Wanna spot me?”

“No thanks. How about I just scream verbal encouragements at you?” I took a deep breath and barked. “No pain, no gain! That pain is just weakness leaving your body! Come on! Push! Push! Make the weight you bitch!”

“What’s the deal with the hair?”

Curran tore his gaze from the book and grimaced, “Grows every flare. Can’t help it.”

We stared at each other. “Waiting for the Fabio joke,” he said.

“Why me?” he said finally. “Are you on some sort of mission to fuck up my life?”

“I try my best to avoid you.”

“You’re doing a hell of a job.”

“I honestly don’t meant to cause problems.”

“You don’t cause problems. An unpiloted vampire causes problems. You cause catastrophes.”

“If there is anything I can do, I’ll help. Don’t get excited. It’s not because of you. For the child. If it wasn’t for her and the flare, I’d throw your dumb ass out of this window.”

“What does the flare have to do with it?”

“I don’t want it to be attributed to a loss of control on my part. When I throw you out of the window, I want there to be no doubt the act was deliberate.”

This series is Adult, but not in the smexi sense. I am looking forward to a bit of rawrrrr in that department, eventually. I must keep reading to find out.

I have hope.

A slow, lazy, carnivorous smile touched Curran’s lips. “Not only will you sleep with me, but you will say ‘please.’”

I stared at him, shocked.

The smile widened. “You will say ‘please’ before and ‘thank you’ after.”

Nervous laughter bubbled up. “You’ve gone insane. All that peroxide in your hair finally did your brain in, Goldilocks.”

“You were joking about the whole please and thank you thing, right?”

“Meant every word.” A little light danced in his eyes and he very deliberately said, “Baby.”

No.

He laughed. “You should see your face right now.”

“Don’t call me that.”

“Would you prefer ‘darling’? Or maybe ‘cupcake’? “ He winked.

I gritted my teeth.

This is very much Kate Daniels taking the lead through books # 1 and # 2. I am looking forward to more Curran as dang the lad is rawrrrr. He steals the odd kiss but not much more at this stage.

Booooo!

Hehe! I know it will happen and I just have to sit tight and wait.

Well, young Maximillian has certainly decided to one up Curran and take the lady. Who knew he had it in him?

I was a bit lost to who Maximillian was, but how silly of me he is the good Doc Crest.

Cauldron’s and a tentacle crazy hoodie dude are causing trouble and being a pain in Kate’s ass. She has her hands full keeping her young charge safe. Julie has her hormones in top gear for Red, who may or may not be deserving of her young affections.

Andrea is a great character. I dig her. I can see she gets a book ( Gunmetal Magic # 5.5) , glove clap for Andrea.

Kate problem solves using her sometimes hit or miss solutions, but she gets there in the end, sometimes unconscious with Curran carrying her back to the Keep to bring her back from whatever mess and pain she has gotten herself into.

I love Derek the enthusiastic side kick. I am seeing that lad’s potential being hinted at.

Kate showed us a softer side to her, she pulled a bit more of a mum type role and I liked seeing her like that. She showed us how alone she really is. She keeps busy, but who does she have to come home to? She lets some of her secrets out of that skeleton filled closet.

I think I am onto the whole blood thing, the secret she is keeping from everyone. It got hinted at more in this instalment.

Bran is a character I enjoyed. He was poofing in and out. He let us know it ain’t all it’s cracked up to be, being who he is. You can’t be around for as long as he has been without some casualty on your emotions and what you signed up for. I liked him, I would have liked him to hang about longer. He had a certain charm about him.

The man approached . He stood tall, at least six three, maybe six four. Broad shoulders. Long legs in black pants. His black hair fell in a tangled mess on his shoulders. It looked like he might’ve cut it himself with a knife and then tied a leather cord across his forehead to keep it somewhat pinned. I looked at his face. Handsome bastard. Defined jaw, chiselled cheekbones, full lips. Eyes like black fire. The kind of eyes that jumped from a woman’s dreams right into her morning and made trouble in the marriage bed.

He gave me a feral grin. “Like what you see, dove?”

“Nope.” I hadn’t had sex in eighteen months. Pardon me while I struggle with my hormone overload.

“I’m Bran. The hero.”

“The hero? Humility is a virtue.”

“So is patience. And if you’re patient and lucky, you might just be the girl I bed on my last night in town.”

"I bet you coo in bed." His black eyes shone, reflecting the flames of the fire.  "Come sit next to me."
"No funny business?"
"I make no promises."

Every time the Reeves let their hair down, so to speak, I kept hearing in my head Willow Smith’s song, ‘Whip My Hair.’

Saiman, hmmm, I am waiting for this, let’s call him a lad, to be more in the story with a substantial role. I like him, his sole part was being a bit drunk on magic and playing the part of a nude woman, ha! Then morphing into a nude man... slong and all. He is good for a bit of spontaneous laugh and a dance. He is a floating character that has a bit to say and then ...poof he is gone again.

Kate and I are getting along fine now. I am looking forward to Magic Strikes and more of Curran.

Bring. On. Some Adult smexi. I know it is inevitable for Curran and Kate.

Magic Strikes, I am looking forward to more than a stolen kissy. Will I get it?

I may be sounding a tad impatient :D

If you pop over to Smashwords you can get for free

Curran Vol 1

I accessed it through the link on Goodreads

It has a Curran POV scene for each of the books.
I have only read Magic Bites and Magic Burns to-date.
I read both those POV's and really enjoyed them.
2 Great scenes were chosen.

  1. Rawr! So this is more UF like PBriggs, not so much smex. I'm tired of sexed up books right now, I should probably pan to YA fantasy or UF like this one.

    1. Hey matey,

At the moment I would put Adam in Mercedes Thompson as being more rawrrr as he is more striking as an Alpha role. Curran is getting there for me. He is rawrrrr but he needs a bit more. He is playing at banter with Kate at the moment. I'm not sure if he knows how to get Kate. She is her own person. Doesn't listen to much advice from Curran. At the moment P Briggs series for me is waaay in front. But, I am happy to be proven wrong the more I read of Kate Daniels , cause everybody rates it highly :D

  2. The Mysterious Writer Without a Face C.S.SCRIBLERIUS

Among an I number every time larger of authors that walk in the shadows detached the mysterious C.S. Scriblerius, believed is a pseudonym as of Twelve Hawks. Everything that it is known about those authors the book MAGICAL MYSTERY TRAVEL and their works as ””Percyfaw Code””,de Scriblerius, made available by limited time as e-book in an apparent strategy of marketing of enormous success in the web and ””The Traveler””, Twelve Hawks published amid the style of Hollywood hype where disembarked in the list bestseller of the newspaper The New Times. The mysterious to Thomas Pynchon’s same style, Philip Roth, JD Salinger,B.Traven, Cormac McCarthy, authors C.S. Scriblerius and Twelve Hawks “live out of the grating”, meaning that you chose roads no so conventional in the market editorial, using like this other means for popularization of their works, and, hindering of they be tracked.
