SIMON & SCHUSTER TO PUBLISH CASSANDRA CLARE’S NEW SERIES
THE DARK ARTIFICES

Simon & Schuster Australia today announced the acquisition of Cassandra Clare, the bestselling and award-winning author of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series, with her third young adult fantasy series. The new trilogy will be entitled The Dark Artifices.

UK & Commonwealth print and e-book rights (excluding Canada) in for The Dark Artifices trilogy were acquired by Ingrid Selberg, Director of Children’s Publishing for Simon & Schuster UK, from Danny Baror and Heather Baror-Shapiro of Baror International for a major seven-figure sum. The first title is planned for publication in hardcover in 2015 and will be the first global S&S publication of Cassandra Clare with a worldwide embargoed release and carefully co-ordinated global marketing and publicity campaign.

With more than 10 million copies of her books in print worldwide, Cassandra Clare’s works have been translated into 34 languages. She took the world of young adult literature by storm in 2007 with her debut novel, City of Bones. The Mortal
Instruments series (which includes City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass and City of Fallen Angels, with City of Lost Souls to publish next month and a further title, City of Heavenly Fire, to follow) and The Infernal Devices series (which
includes Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince with a final title, Clockwork Princess, still to come) have gone on to become international bestsellers. The film adaptation of Mortal Instruments is scheduled for release in 2013, with Lily Collins in the starring role as Clary.

Set against the glittering backdrop of present-day Los Angeles, The Dark Artifices series is set five years after the end of the Mortal Instruments series, as the Shadowhunters return. The story introduces Emma, one of the fiercest warriors and most skilled young Shadowhunters the world has ever seen, and Emma’s sworn partner-in-arms, Julian. Despite Emma’s complicated feelings for Julian, the two must band together to investigate a demonic plot that stretches from the warlock-run nightclubs of the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica.

Ingrid Selberg said of the new acquisition: “We are absolutely delighted to have acquired Cassandra Clare’s new trilogy, The Dark Artifices. Cassandra is a marvellous storyteller, whose writing we have long loved and admired, and we are so excited that we will now be publishing her.”

Lou Johnson, Managing Director of Simon &Schuster Australia said: “This is a landmark occasion for us. Cassandra Clare has so many fans in Australia and New Zealand and we can’t wait to work with our international colleagues to make the publication of The Dark Artifices an international blockbuster publishing event.”

Cassandra Clare added: “I’ve had a wonderful relationship publishing with Simon and Schuster and I’m excited to extend that relationship to the UK and Australia. I know they love this story as much as I do, and I can’t wait to bring this new adventure to my British and Australian readers.”

Now I know there will be a world of excited fans out there thrilled by this news!!
Enjoy the wait!!
