16 year old Karlie has had a pretty normal life... But when her Mom dies she is forced to move over 1,000 miles away to live with her Dad. That's when things start getting weird.
She can't explain the earthquakes that nobody else feels, or why she no longer sleeps. But most of all she doesn't know why she trusts Shane so much, even though his Dad wants her dead.
Suddenly, Karlie's normal life is turned upside down and she enters a world she never dreamed could really exist .
BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :
Karlie Anderson has had to trade New York for Arkansas. Her mother has died and she has gone to live with the father she barely knows.
“Welcome to Jonesboro – population 66,194.I suddenly felt sick to my stomach.”
This book has angels, demons, a half demon and a Chosen One.
Karlie sees Shane at school and there is ‘something’ that draws her to him. He seems just as drawn to her, but walks away, keeps his distance. Others tell Karlie to stay away from Shane, he is dangerous.
I really like Shane’s dark image and he eases into things with Karlie. He is battling his own inner demons and trying to keep Karlie safe. He is quite a ‘cool’ guy.
Alex is a character I found up and down. I think my main concern with his character was this ‘Alex loves Karlie speed love’, it felt very out of place. I didn’t ‘feel’ the power of it.
The mystery of Karlie and who she is, is what drives this story. Everybody else knows, but to keep her safe, she slowly learns, more from pure determination to be told.
Now, I am going to be totally honest here and say, the start of this book has quite obvious echoes of a certain book series the world loves, BUT!! then it steers away from that.
This was a nice start to the series that I think has great potential. The plot was a little weak in parts, but I am intrigued to know more. Heather kept my interest with where she was taking me with Karlie and the villains were fun. I want to know more about Alex and Shane.
I am intrigued by Karlie’s dad. I think there is some mystery there that will unfold in book 2.
I am looking forward to reading ‘When Destiny Strikes’ and watching Heather’s writing grow.

Thanks for the review, Michelle. Definitely sounds like something I'd like!
ReplyDeleteYes, the beginning sounds like a couple of series I've read. One I disliked and the other am raving about ... :)
