My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy; a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest. But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos.
First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why; especially since I should have been the one who died..
BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :
Gypsy girl aka Gwen Frost has a gift. When she touches items, a person, she basically gets flashes of information, history. Some things should be left secret. Hence the aptly titled ‘Touch of Frost’. Financially this gift can come in handy.
I really wanted to love this book as I am an academy book fan girl. I had trouble connecting with Gwen , the female lead. Funnily enough, I really enjoyed Daphne’s character. Yes, the mean girl grew on me, because she had layers and what a lovely surprise. I enjoyed Daphne and Carson’s characters. Band geek Carson and Daphne, they are a surprising, yet cute couple.
I think I may not have connected so much with this first book as there was a lot of information time. The mythology , although interesting, it is quite a lot. I’m talking loads of mythology characters named.
I really liked the bigger picture that Jennifer has with the girl students at Mythos Academy being either Valkyrie or Amazons. The guy students being Romans or Vikings, mainly, but as we find out there are other warriors like the Spartans, Persians, Trojans, Celts, Samurais and Ninja’s. I am looking forward to meeting a ninja character. Don’t ask my why, I just always have had a thing for Ninja’s.
As a general rule the students of Mythos are all rich, beautiful and dangerous. Gwen feels she is none of these things. So why is she, the gypsy girl, the non warrior, non Amazon or strong Valkyrie here at Mythos Academy? She isn’t even rich.
Bad boy Logan Quinn, thick, silky ink black hair, ice blue eyes, black leather jacket... have I got your attention? Supposedly signs the mattresses of his female conquests....like dude, really? I liked his character, but I didn’t get that ‘feeling’ , not yet anyway, of the guy in a book that you know will eventually rock the girls world. I know it will hit me, but not in this book.
I really liked the weaving in of Loki and the Reapers of Chaos. The danger lurking amongst the students, who can be trusted, who is a killer?
Vic , now he could be fun. Visually, Vic makes me giggle...a lot!
This series has great potential. I personally needed to be grabbed more by the storyline and characters. Gwen was written quite young for her age, but then again that could be Jennifer’s way of letting the reader see the growth of Gwen’s character through the series.
I am very intrigued to know more as I know Jennifer’s adult urban fantasy series ‘Elemental Assassin’ rates well.
What I do know is I came out of this book knowing a lot more mythology characters and meaning. I think Loki is one bad ass who I did feel sorry for him with the ‘Bowl of Tears’, but the dude does want to enslave mortals, kill Gods and raise an army...... this should be funJ

Nice! I have the first 3 books in my TBR mountain! Well, the third is an ARC, but they tend to be pretty decent in staying in sync with the published one! It just looked interesting and I thought I'd pick it up since I got it for free. I didn't really care for Jennifer's adult series so I am hoping I will like this one more!
ReplyDeleteGreat review!
Hi Jessica,
