BOOK REVIEW - HELL BENT by DEVON MONK - BROKEN MAGIC # 1 - ADULT URBAN FANTASY - ROC BOOKS

By: Devon Monk
Published By: Roc
Released : Available Now
Details : Paperback from library, 357 Pages

RATING: 5 HELL. YEAH! STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Instead of the deadly force it once was, magic is now a useless novelty. But not for Shame Flynn and Terric Conley, “breakers” who have the gift for reverting magic back to its full-throttle power. In the magic-dense city of Portland, Oregon, keeping a low profile means keeping their gifts quiet. After three years of dealing with disgruntled magic users, Shame and Terric have had enough of politics, petty magic, and, frankly, each other. It’s time to call it quits.

When the government discovers the breakers’ secret—and its potential as a weapon—Shame and Terric suddenly become wanted men, the only ones who can stop the deadly gift from landing in the wrong hands. If only a pair of those wrong hands didn’t belong to a drop-dead-gorgeous assassin Shame is falling for as if it were the end of the world. And if he gets too close to her, it very well could be....

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

How much do I love Shamus Flynn?

HUGE!

Love him. Crazy about his character in Allie Beckstrom series.

How much did I love this first installment in Broken Magic.

Shiz loads! Devon is the woman, when it comes to urban fantasy. Such a rich story line with characters we can't seem to get enough of.

Sure, you don’t have to have read the Allie Beckstrom series to read Shamus and Terric’s spinoff series, Broken Magic, but, I highly recommend reading Allie Beckstrom first. I believe you will miss far, far, far too much of Shamus and Terric’s complicated relationship by jumping straight to Hell Bent. You will miss far, far, far too much about all the sub characters development.

8 of the books in the 9 books Allie Beckstrom series.

“What was that text?” I asked.

“Personal.”

“And?”

“Do you really want to know what’s going on in my personal life?”

“Well, no. Not really. But that text made you stop talking. And I am always interested in ways of accomplishing that.”

Faint smile. He sat back, fork left behind in the mashed potatoes. “I’m dating someone.”

“Uh-huh.” I drank beer to wash down salt and grease.

He was watching me. Waiting.

“Terric, you always have a boyfriend. Don’t care.” Half the burger down, half to go. I took another bite.

“That was him on the phone.” Shrug.

“You like him?” I asked.

His eyes skittered away from mine. “Most of the time.” Eyes back on me again. Smile that faded too quickly.

I moved on to the pile of french fries. “And the rest of the time?”

“It’s complicated.”

Broken Magic is a two book spinoff series, from Allie Beckstrom, it was written because the fans wanted more of Shamus and Terric, so Devon Monk delivered.

Giddy Up!

Terric was nearly my opposite. I had dark hair, eyes that were sometimes black and sometimes dark green, rarely bothered to shave, and lately, I’d been running a good twenty pounds under my fighting weight.

Terric was taller than me which I hated, and built like a guy who might need to jump on a jet and hit the catwalk at any moment. His hair was white-silver even though he was on one side or the other of thirty and his eyes were blue and set in a face that could knock Hollywood’s leading man off the marquee.

Boy. Did Devon deliver.

I have so many quotes from Hell Bent, I can’t possibly put them all in this review. Shamus just has a way with words.

“Why are you always looking at me?”

“Because I know which of you won’t play by the rules.”

I gave him my best smile. “I like rules. They make that cracking sound when they break.”

Terric and Shamus have this thing they do, back and forth.

Dash looked over my shoulder through the window to see who was coming into the office. I didn’t have to look. I’d know that heart, that pulse, that life anywhere. Terric.

“You killed my ficus,” he called out across the room.

I stood. Strolled out into the main office. “They were ugly.”

“They were fragile. And hard to keep alive.”

“Took care of that. You’re welcome.”

He dragged his fingers back through his platinum white hair, grabbing at the back of his head before letting go. “It’s coming out of your paycheck.”

“Why is every conversation with you an argument?”

“Seems a waste of time, doesn’t it? Especially since I’m always right.”

I love reading their complicated friendship. Nothing they do or say to each other is without a mini argument, or verbal fight.

“Doctors don’t work on me.”

“You’re not inhuman, Shame.”

I didn’t say anything. This was an old argument.

Terric bent, putting his mouth near my ear. “Don’t argue and make this harder,” he said. He slid one hand and arm behind my back, and the other under my knees.

I was about to be manhandled. It was as physically close to him as I’d been in years. I shut my mouth and stared at the ceiling, trying not to say anything, trying not to think anything while he half lifted, half slid me into a prone position.

“Don’t say that.”

“What? Don’t tell you the truth?” I lowered my voice. “You are a piece of work, Conley. You say you want to talk, but you don’t want to listen. I like it. I like killing.”

Shamus is snarky, witty, but under all that, there is a guy who is looking for something more in his life.

She was my air, my sensation, my world.

And, for the first time in a very long time, I wondered if this was what love felt like.

“Oooh. I like it when you talk dirty.”

She stood. Stepped up close to me.

I thought maybe I ought to kiss her. Maybe I ought to talk her into seeing things my way, Shamus-style.

“You stil haven’t given my boyish charms a chance,” I said.

“To seduce me?” she said.

“To make you never want to be with any other man as long as you live.”

She laughed, truly laughed. It was musical sort of thing that filled the silent places in me.

“You think very highly of yourself, don’t you?”

“Not at all. I am painfully humble.”

Ok, so let's back this truck up a bit, people!

Now, it is true for the Allie Beckstrom series, that Shame wasn't gay, but we didn't see him hanging with any chicks doing the funky chicken, either. There was always this tension between Terric and Shame, which left us readers bouncing up and down in wonder. We knew where Terric stood, but we didn't know where Shame stood. It always felt to me like he was on the fence. There was all this clever tension between the two of them.

This was always a part of their complicated relationship I enjoyed.

She nodded. “He’s...more than a friend, isn’t he? The look on his face when he opened his door and saw you there the other night, Shame. He loves you, doesn’t he?”

“I think so,” I heard myself saying. Apparently, one truth tonight wasn’t going to be enough.

“But you don’t love him?”

I took a deep breath.

From Allie B, we know Terric is gay and he's Shamus’s Soul Complement. Normally, Soul Complements are male and female.

Terric Conley is Life magic and Shamus Flynn is Death magic. I absolutely adore how Devon writes these two in this book. I really felt for both the characters. They have a lot to deal with when they draw on their particular magic. I think Shame drew the shorter straw.

Life magic.

“No,” I said. “Not happening. Not here. I told you to keep your hands off --“

Terric called on Life magic.

Here’s what happens when he does that -- he goes all white-light angelic looking, which the chicks, and I guess some of the dudes, really like. Then the magic inside him devours his humanity. His eyes go silver, no pupils, no white. Any shred of heart, soul, or mind of that man is wiped away. Replaced with a cold, alien thing that looks out from behind his eyes. Life magic. It was not human. It was not Terric. And one of these days when he called on it, Life magic was going to take over for good and Terric wasn’t going to come back to being Terric.

Jesus. He knew. How much I wanted to consume. That I barely held it in check. I hadn’t ever talked to him about it.

Well, maybe just that one time when I was really drunk.

“Want me to pinkie-swear I won’t kill you, mate? Worried that I’ll lose control of Death magic and squeeze the pulse out of your ticker?”

It is so hard to put into words how the reader watches Terric and Shamus play off each other, so I might just use quotes and let the lads show you.

Terric was on the phone. Pacing. Couldn’t tell who he was talking to.

I started looking for my shoes. Remembered I’d come over barefoot. Crap.

Terric stoppped pacing. Glanced over at me. One look at me and he paused a second in his good-bye, which made me grin.

Damn straight I was worth looking at.

He pocketed his phone. “I know it’s only brown, but damn, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen you in a color. Shame. You should wear colours more often.”

“I do wear colors: black, coal, ebony.”

A couple of minutes ticked by in silence.

“So, if you don’t need anything,” I started.

“Just.” Terric turned, held my gaze. Blue eyes darkened by sorrow. “Would you shut up and sit here for a few minutes?”

I opened my mouth.

“Please.”

I closed my mouth. Handed him the bottle. He took another drink and handed it back, swiveling his chair so he could stare out the window.

I watched him for a minute. Thought about things I could say. Thought about things I probably should have said a long time ago.

Decided to just do what he asked and kept quiet. I even remembered to wipe the taste of him off the bottle before I took another gulping swallow.

I love all the other characters getting some sort of mention in this book. I felt like I was home again with Allie Beckstrom series.

Zayvion and Allie make an appearance or three.

Zay and Allie stopped next to me. They stood there, arm in arm, Allie just an inch or two shorter than Zayvion’s six foot something. She wore a tank top that showed off those kick-ass magic-born tattoos down her arm and the bands of dusty black ringing her other wrist and elbow. Now that we weren’t on the run for our lives, both Allie and Zay had put on about ten pounds, and lost the dark circles under their eyes.

They smiled more, laughed more, and had that calm, sweet dedication to each other that meant they never walked into a room without holding hands.

Zay was always like a brother to Shame in Allie B, voice of reason.

Zay put a hand on my shoulder. Heavy. Wide. Hot.

I didn’t pull on the life in him. Not a single drop of all that gorgeous, rich life. His life.

He waited a second, then nodded. “You’re good, Shame.”

“Good? Come on, now. You know I am the best, Z.” I gave him a grin.

One eyebrow rose. “You’re all right.”

“The lies coming out of your mouth,” I pushed on the door. “I do not know how she puts up with you.”

“It’s a little thing called love,” Zayvion said so quietly I almost didn’t hear him. “Can’t run from it, can’t deny it.”

“Sure I can.”

“Now who’s lying?” he said.

Mackanie Love is a great floating character who I think gets under used. He just floats in and out every now and then.

“You still breathing, Flynn?” Cop was a huge dude from Hawaii, named Mackanie Love. We’d met back in my petty crime days. He’d never cut me slack. But then, I hadn’t deserved any.

Davy. Love Davy, he was a great character in Allie B.

Davy looked like he was barely old enough to drink, although he’d shown me his license once that said he was twenty-three. Blond, sort of an easygoing-skater-kid look, complete with a turquoise beaded necklace. Most people had no idea he was the head of the entire network of Hounds in Portland.

Stone!!! One of my fave side kick creature characters.

There was a gargoyle on the roof. Namely, Stone.

Well, he was really an animate -- which is a construction of stone and gears powered by magic. He’d been made by Cody Miller, who had once been an incredible artist and magic user.

Even though magic shouldn’t be strong enough to keep Stone going, he was still as mostly alive as ever. He’d been Allie’s loyal companion for years now, was a good-natured doofus who liked to stack household items.

In a fight he was a deadly, ferocious brute.

He folded his wings and four-footed it to the chimney, sitting with his hands wrapped over his toes. He peered down at the police moving around, then looked out at me.

I held up a hand. “Look after Allie,”I said in a normal voice I knew he’d hear. He tipped his head, both ears rising into sharp points, and showed a little teeth.

Cody, good seeing him...back.

“You’ve become a little more blunt, I see,” Cody said as he got into the passenger’s seat.

“I tried subtle. It chafed.”

Other characters of note make an appearance too. You can find out who they are yourself.

Shamus gets his own side kick ghost, Eleanor, who you would have met in Allie B series. Sometimes I felt quite sad and lonely for Eleanor. Shamus has a good heart when it comes to Eleanor.

There is a character who we meet in Allie B series who gets a meatier role in this book, playing the part of a crazy villain. I liked what Devon did here. Mind you, what he did was... well, you will have to read to find out.

This was a fast paced read which I totally dug, full of snark, tension and two characters who keep me guessing. Will they get a HEA?

I am looking forward to Stone Cold the conclusion to this little spinoff series, I think already I am going to miss Terric and Shamus.

URBAN FANTASY AUTHOR - DEVON MONK - SPOTLIGHT SATURDAY # 1 - ROC

SPOTLIGHT SATURDAY # 1

DEVON MONK

I am a mega huge fan of Devon Monk's, urban fantasy series, Allie Beckstrom. I have read them all.

You will find all my reviews for Allie Beckstrom series in the left side bar of the blog.

Roc publishing house have firmly got Devon Monk on their books with all her series.

If you are looking for a wild time in the magic world, then Allie Beckstrom is a great addition to your reading pile. Allie is a really cool kickass chick and all the sub characters are really awesome.

You will also love Stone. He is...well, I shall let you find out. I love him. He is not human, I will tell you that much. He also likes to build.

I thought I would spotlight Devon as I don't really see her books often around the blogosphere. I think they are a must read if you love Urban Fantasy and well written characters.

I love that she has written two books in the spinoff series, Broken Magic. I am on my waiting list at library for Hell Bent. These are Shamus and Terric's books. Now we never worked out if Shame was gay in Allie Beckstrom. Terric is and he is always partnered up with Shamus in Allie B. As far as I was concerned, Shame truly stole the limelight once he arrived in Allie B series. He is such a cool guy and a bit of a smart mouth. Shamus wore black, was a bit gothic. Not sure which of the guys is on the covers, but it kinda makes me think it's Shamus, plus Terric has different hair color.

Stone Cold just released 1st April 2014.

Devon also has the Age of Steam , steampunk series I have yet to read. I love me some Steampunk.  How cool is this cover art!!
That is not a question.
I gotta read these.

But, there is one more addition coming. A new series. Woot!!
House Immortal series with book one being, House Immortal. Just this cover promises to deliver a kick ass chickie babe.

Releases : 2nd September 2014

By: Devon Monk
Published By : ROC
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback from Library, 358 Pages

RATING: 4.25 SHAMUS FLYNN STARS!!

Blurb: Goodreads

Allison Beckstrom’s talent for tracking spells has put her up against some of the darkest elements in the world of magic, but she’s never faced anything like this.

Magic itself has been poisoned, and Allie’s undead father may have left the only cure in the hands of a madman. Hunted by the Authority–the secret council that enforces magic’s laws–wanted by the police, and unable to use magic, she’s got to find the cure before the sickness spreads beyond any power to stop it.

But when a Death magic user seeks to destroy the only antidote, Allie and her fellow renegades must stand and fight to defend the innocent and save all magic…

Series finale.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Leander and Isabelle want to rule magic. All magic. Light and dark, all disciplines, he said. They want to live the lie they were cheated out of, here in the living world, together. If they have control of all the magic in the world, they will change it , bend it to their desires, their vision of what magic should be. And then they will find a way to be immortal.

Armed with her dead dad still possessing her, Allie, Zay, Shame,  Terric and Stone, plus some more sidekicks, must save Portland, which is equating to saving the world from The Overseer who just happens to be possessed by Leander and Isabelle.

Seriously people, I know that was a long sentence, just breathe through it, or hold your breath until the end, one of the two.

The gang is back and they are busy.

Shame is still my dialogue hero with his smart comments. I so love the lad.

This is the finale people. No more story to tell. Devon had to wrap this up so she does it by juggling a mass of characters, good and evil, in the endeavour to stop magic landing in the hands of THE OVERSEER.

I kind of like saying that in my head like I am using a microphone and a deep voice.

Seattle is heading towards Portland with an army of magic users bent on stopping our gang who are out to shut down the four wells and bring down THE OVERSEER.

Our gang is not going to let a little o'l army stand in their way.

The hounds with Davy in charge are all in. Many hands make for stopping an army from getting to our gang and capturing or killing them.

Collins, do we trust him? What have we got to lose?

Dear ol' dad. Do we trust him inside Allie’s head? What have we got to lose?

A lot.

There is no time for romance and smexi times. * whispers* It would have been nice one smexi moment to go out on a bang. But Devon had her characters with their hands full. Sadly no Zay smexi times, although we got some nice declarations of love for eternity.

Shame is my babe. He kind of overtook Zay the minute he entered the storyline in this series. He is just so damn likeable and funny.

Will we ever know Shame’s sexual orientation?

Who cares?

I would have liked Terric to get a HEA, being Soul Complements, but nothing to be found from the finale.

It was a good finale. Violet and Kevin come to the inevitable. If they didn’t I was going to write their inevitable as, well, it was inevitable. I would have loved it to have been written into the storyline in the series earlier. There is just something about Kevin. He was holding out on us.

Good wins over evil, always a sound ending when that happens. Stone gets to continue playing with his blocks and clacking about the place. I think Stone needs a HEA. Just saying J

The action was fired up. The Veiled were hungry. Shame got a little too enthusiastic empowering his dark side. Terric pulled some smexi mojo and nearly had Allie throwing her panties at his head Tom Jones style.

Portland, although a little worse for wear, came out trumps and I had a good time.

I still want a Shame spinoff. Just love the guy, but that is me thinking out loud.

It was a great ride this series. Magic being thrown about and causing trouble in every installment. The characters and sub characters were hugely entertaining, but alas, it is the end of the road.

It is fitting I give my fave Shamus quotes from the finale as a send off.

Dude you did make me laugh in this series :)

FAVE SHAME QUOTES:

“About time you got here,” Shame said as soon as I crossed the threshold. “I was getting tired waiting for the world to end.”

“Done getting your beauty sleep?” he asked.

“I wasn’t sleeping. I was talking to Nola,”I said. “And if I remember right, we were waiting for you to wake up.”

“Behold my awakeness,” he said, spreading his long, thin fingers. “Let’s party.”

“It’s magic ,” I said, managing not to add “of course” to it. “Terric looks like he’s made out of sunlight and sex, and Shame looks like the dead.” “The sexy dead?” Shame asked.

“Look at Shame,” I said.

Zay pivoted so he could see Shame through the spell.

Shame made a kissy face.

“Tantrum much?” Shame asked, coming up beside me, but watching Zayvion. “What did you do to make him so angry?”

“Like I’m the only one screwing up today?”

Shame stiffened just slightly , but didn’t go away.

Damn it.

“Blunt,” he said, as if sampling wine. “Sharp. Also true. I know my sins, love. What I want to know is why you’re suddenly afraid of yours.”

Shamus Flynn strode down the street, smoking the ash off a cigarette, and throwing the butt to the side as he exhaled.

I could practically feel Terric’s smile.

“Decide to join us?” Terric asked, handing Shame a spare ax from his belt.

Shame met his gaze with a wry grin. “Wouldn’t miss this for the fucking world, mate.”

“Did we do this?”

“Redecorate Portland in apocalypse chic?”Shame asked. “Pretty much. That’s why wars between magic users are a no-no.”

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I love this urban fantasy series and I have just realised that there is only one more book to come, ‘Magic For A Price’ due for release 6th November 2012.

I have heard there may be a Shamus Flynn spinoff, I am hoping this is not a rumour as I can soooo see Shamus and a book series, he just has the most brilliant character voice with his snark and humour, yet he is a caring soul underneath all that black. I would love a wallpaper image of Shamus that I could share my desktop space .

In this instalment, Dad aka Daniel , is still rattling about in Allie’s head. I was surprised at how Allie has really come to the foreground and been quite in charge, even over Zay. I understand Zay, Shame, Terric, Hayden, Maeve, Victor and Allie have all gone rogue and mutinied from the Authority, as it is a bit corrupt and who does one really trust when they are trying to save the people from the Veiled. I am a bit perplexed how Allie has gained the respect of the people who have been in the Authority a long time and much higher ranked and appears to have superseded their rank. Does it have to do with Daniel/Dad being the ever brainiac that he is, guiding Allie, that has her trumping the others? Are they in such need of that authority figure that they can rely on, that it has come down to Allie/Daniel Beckstrom?

The Veiled are still happily wandering about doing the bitey, bitey and infecting and killing people. Jingo Jingo aka Mr Creepy/ Mr Wrong, is now in charge, the new head of the Authority, as it didn’t work out very well for Bartholomew. Every member who hasn’t gone rogue is gunning for our very small group of heroes. The Authority isn’t earning any brownie points or trust by having Jingo Jingo in charge.

Roman decides to make an entrance at the most inopportune time for Allie, me thinks he timed that one special..hehe!!

“For Christsake, Grimshaw, use the frickin’ front door. Is it some kind of requirement that all Guardians of the gates have to do the creepy stalker thing?”

It is decided that Roman will take some very valuable recorded information to the Overseer, the Highest Head of Authority, The Final Voice. The End Watch. The Last Ward. The Overseer guides the world of magic and all who use it. So, Margaret Stafford, who is the current Overseer, has a tad heavy weight on her shoulders. Roman must successfully get this recorded information that will ‘out’ the corruptness that has become the Authority , to the current Overseer as she has the equipment that can extract this information. How successful will Roman be?

Allie and Zay , who I know have a deep respect and love for each other, I just am not feeling it as much in these later instalments. What I mean is, Bones and Cat from the Night Huntress series, you really feel their connection, love, protectiveness, no matter how many books you are into the series, it comes through loud and clear. Allie and Zay are Soul Complements and have a connection and a love, but I felt that something was missing from the writing of these two characters, to continue to make me believe their relationship. Maybe it is just me.

Devon gives Allie a makeover and she now has that badass look about her. I think Zay was rather surprised, in a good way.

Devon brings the Magic action scenes in this book. Lots more magic is being used. Allie still can’t use magic without it making her sick. I do wonder where Devon is going with this with just one book left in the series. Spells are flying about all smexi like.

I thought a most brilliant/clever idea Devon had was using Winnie The Pooh in this instalment. How clever, bracelets with message beads, that use a code from Winnie The Pooh..hehe!! Brilliant!! If you can recite Winnie The Pooh , this little crew of heroes can talk in code to each other and decipher the message. If you are a tad forgetful, just take the book with you and look it up.

Good thinking 99.

There is so much I love about this series, but I must admit Shamus Flynn aka Shame, has taken over the Team T-Shirt from Zayvion aka Zay. There is just something about Shamus. Is he straight or gay? Well, we still do not know this. But, who cares.... well Terric does....*sigh*

I am feeling just a tad worried about the last book giving me the satisfaction I need from this series coming to an end. I have my fingers crossed that I find out the why and what of Dad being inside Allie’s head and what all this is about. There are still many things swaying in the breeze.

I love all the characters Devon brings to life in this series, I want me a Shamus to take home, but I hope Terric gets to eventually take him home. Stone, my most awesome Gargoyle is bounding about in protective mode, but he can also be rather useful as a container. Yes, I did say a container.

Still not sure about Collins, his reputation seems to deem him very dangerous, so much that he was ‘closed’, now he wants to strike a deal to be ‘unclosed’. Is this a wise decision or is it our crews only option?

Will everybody survive this instalment? You will have to read and find out.

FAVE QUOTES :

“Super interesting,” I interrupted. “Really, just. But I’d rather hear it clothed. Take it outside , gentlemen.”
“You’re naked?’ Shame said, trying to get a better look around Zayvion and Roman.
........ “She’s naked?’ Shame asked again as Zayvion shoved his shoulder to make him turn around. “Aw , give a man a break. What’s a little accidental nakedness between friends?”

“Are you here to betray us?” Shame asked.
   “No.”
“Is that accent of yours fake?” Shame asked.
   "No. Is yours?”
“I don’t have an accent,” Shame said.
“Shamus,” Maeve sighed. “Blood magic isn’t a toy.”

“Hell no,” Shame said with a grin. “Arguing like it’s buy-one-get-one-free doomsday out there. All I know is I’m not going to be the one who flies off to England to get an audience with Stafford. I’d like my internal organs, and my memories, to stay right where they are, thank you very much.”

“Shame ?” Zayvion said. “Shut the hell up.”
And wonders of wonders, Shame did just that.

“But that’s my dad’s tech- my company’s, tech. And you’re hacking into it? I didn’t think they could be accessed like that.”
Shame doused his smile and gave me wide, innocent eyes. “They can’t. I have no idea what Terric’s talking about, the delinquent. Your da’s handiwork is above the genius of all other men and will never be soiled.”
I pointed at my face. “This is me not believing you.

This ought to be fun,” Shame said, lighting a cigarette. “I call dibs on that piece of shit Jingo Jingo.”

“You’d miss me if I was dead,” Shame said. “Wouldn’t you, Ter?’ he plunked down in the empty chair, staring straight into Terric’s glare.
...... “With every damn beat of my heart,” Terric ground out. I noted he had his right hand closed, and out of the way of Shame’s sight.
Shame blinked. He hadn’t expected that answer. “Liar,” he said.
Terric just stared at him. “Think so?”
Shame frowned . Terric didn’t look away.
Finally , Shame scowled. “You used to be fun to be around, Terric,” he said, breaking eye contact, and scowling down at his coffee instead. “What happened to you?”
“You, Flynn,” Terric said. “You happened to me.”

BOOK REVIEW - MAGIC ON THE LINE by DEVON MONK - ALLIE BECKSTROM # 7

By: Devon Monk

Published By : Roc

Released: Available Now
Details : Paperback from library, 345 Pages

RATING: 4.5 TIMES ARE A CHANGING STARS!!

Book Blurb: Taken From Goodreads

Allison Beckstrom has willingly paid the price of pain to use magic, and has obeyed the rules of the Authority, the clandestine organization that makes-and enforces-all magic policy. But when the Authority's new boss, Bartholomew Wray, refuses to believe that the sudden rash of deaths in Portland might be caused by magic, Allie must choose to follow the Authority's rules, or turn against the very people for whom she's risked her life.

To stop the plague of dark magic spreading through the city, all that she values will be on the line: her magic, her memories, her life. Now, as dead magic users rise to feed upon the innocent and the people closest to her begin to fall, Allie is about to run out of options.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle :

The Tables have turned...and some rather hasty spring cleaning has been done. A new Authority watch has been formed by the blatantly, obviously batting for evil, or power, rather than good, Bartholomew Bray.

Not a nice dude!

There are Veiled popping up doing some naaassssty things, getting all bitey, bitey and this needs to be stopped .

I am just crushing badly on Shamus aka Shame, he is just a gorgeous character. Poor Shame is in a lot of pain and just keeps on doing his thing.

I did chuckle at Shamus and Terric at the little get together and Grant. Now if you know Grant, well you can imagine why Shame got his feathers ruffled...even though he isn’t that way inclined??

I do feel sad for Terric, he has it bad for Shame, and whether Shame is or isn’t, Devon is keeping tight lipped and the tension keeps rolling on.

I felt bad for Allie when it came to her feelings, Zayvion had a love for Chase and he has to grieve while she watches. Not an easy thing to do.

I did feel like Zay and Allie’s relationship is ...well, what’s the word. They love each other and respect each other, but this book had them more, maybe tip toeing around each other. Is that the right words to use? Put it this way... it didn’t feel to me as close as it has in the past, even though it is.

Poor loyal to the core Davy, gets himself in a pickle and is struggling to stay alive.
New characters are introduced. Not sure whether to trust Collins, but he seems to be ok at the moment. Is he a genius, a torturous , dangerous, mad man? Can he be trusted with Davy's life in his hands?

Dad is still rattling about in Allie’s head offering words of wisdom when necessary.

My big ol’ lug of a cutey Stone, is always about when Allie needs him most. I missed seeing him play with the plumbing or play with his Jenga blocks. No click clacking as he walked across her apartment. I miss Stone living with Allie, I admit it.

I do love this series and I do believe I am forming a rather large crush on Shamus, he is stealing the limelight from Zay. I am looking forward to Magic Without Mercy # 8, so stay tuned....

FAVE QUOTES:

“Sweet stalker love,” Shame said. “Maybe I have been doing it wrong, Jones.”
I pulled away, looked into Zayvion’s eyes. “I’m glad you followed me.”
Shame sighed. “Jesus. I need to get laid.”

“I got him,” Shame said. He was sober. I didn’t think I’d seen Shame take so much as a sip of beer. “So, Ter, you gonna stare out at the empty all night?” He put his hand on Terric’s shoulder. “Or you going to put your shirt on , for all that’s decent , man?”

“I’m not wearing a shirt?”Terric sounded surprised.

“Nope.” Shame handed him his shirt. “It’s right here.”

“How do you do that? Find my shirt like that? You always know. When I need stuff.”

“Yes. I always know when you need a shirt.” Shame gave me a tolerant look.

“I’m done bailing your naked ass out of jail.”

Terric got into his shirt and buttoned most of the buttons. “False arrest. I wasn’t naked.”

“Socks don’t count, Ter.”

..... ”It’s not my fault we work so good together. And I really....” He looked up at Shame, searching for something in his face. “I really want us to be.....something.”

“So are you?” I asked Shame.

“Am I what?” he said.

“A threat.”

He started the car and drove down the access road. “He hurt my mother. I’m not a threat. I’m a promise.”

“You look like hell.”

I lifted my middle finger.

He laughed. It was good to hear.

BOOK REVIEW - MAGIC ON THE HUNT by DEVON MONK - ALLIE BECKSTROM # 6

By: Devon Monk
Published By : ROC
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 346 Pages

RATING: 4.5 SHAMUS & TERRIC & STONE STARS!

Book Blurb: Taken From Goodreads

In the secret lockup of the Authority, the council that decides what can and can't be done with magic, an undead magic user has possessed one of the prisoners. He wants his freedom-and then some. Now Allie Beckstrom and her lover, Zayvion, are the first line of defense against the chaos he's about to unleash on the city of Portland...

BOOK REVIEW:

I am rather addicted to this series. Devon has such a great cast of characters. I am truly in love with Shamus Flynn aka Shame.

This instalment in the series has Terric, Shame, Zay and Allie pretty much together the whole book and I likey.

I just love how loyal Shame is. He is such a great guy, smart mouthed, funny and will do anything for Terric. Now this whole thing that’s going on between these two Soul Compliments.....well...what is going on? I think I want them to get IT going on, like truly there is just SOMETHING between these two guys.

Daniel still has me totally muddled to his whole purpose of being in Allie’s head and his motives and ????? We learn more in this book, but I am truly none the wiser if he is appearing to be this father who would throw Allie under the nearest bus if it got him to what he was trying to achieve or if he isn’t that bad and we are all misinterpreting him. This is still a mystery to me. I have always kept my mind open to us being led down a garden path and Daniel actually for the greater good and not the total douche bag of a father that he can come across as. Violet must have seen something in him.

Violet and Kevin, I want to know more about them. Kevin intrigues me.

Zayvion is still the most gorgeous guy , it’s a no brainer at this stage that he and Allie are there for the long haul. I don’t have this fear of them breaking up like in the earlier books. I know all this Soul Compliment stuff doesn’t usually fair well for the couples in the long run, but I think these two will be ok. I would have liked them to have been closer in this book. I know they are in love and he is very protective of Allie, but his emotions sometimes can be a little wooden. I know he has a big job to handle, but .....

Now back to Shame......I literally look forward to reading about him and Terric, more so Shame. He is written very well and I love what comes out of his mouth. He is a rebel with a cause.

I just burn through these books, I simply love them.

And then there is my guy who is just the cutest...Stone. I so want one of these. I love how Shamus brought over Jenga for Stone. HA!! teaching him how to play. Just the happiness in Stone when he can stack , build things. He always seems to appear when somebody needs protecting who is vulnerable.

The box of Allie’s dreams locked in Daniel’s safe..hmmm...my brain is going to an obvious deduction there, due to what we find out in this book, but then I could be totally sniffing down the wrong road.

Totally bouncy for ‘Magic on the Line’, my library didn’t seem to have that on their list...shock..horror. Then ‘Magic Without Mercy’ , due for release April 3rd 2012, which I am totally excited about.

I highly recommend this very intelligent, original, well thought out series and the characters you will love. You will be addicted.

BOOK REVIEW - MAGIC AT THE GATE by DEVON MONK - ALLIE BECKSTROM # 5

By : Devon Monk
Published By:  ROC
Released : Available Now
Details : Paperback from library , 346 Pages

RATING : 5 SMOKIN SHAMUS STARS!!

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

Allie Beckstrom's lover, Zayvion Jones, is a Guardian of the Gate, imbued with both light and dark magic and responsible for ensuring that those energies don't mix. But Zayvion lies in a coma, his soul trapped in death's realm. And when Allie discovers that the only way to save Zayvion is to sacrifice her very own magical essence, she makes a decision that may have grave consequences for the entire world.

BOOK REVIEW:

This is the best book in the series to date. Devon really gave us everything in this book.

I didn’t mind that Zay had a stint in a coma as we got lots of Shamus. I loved Shame in, ‘Magic on the Storm’, but I LOVED Shame even more in Magic at the Gate. Devon writes Shamus Flynn very well and he is a cool guy who is smexi and hot but at the same time you keep guessing what his thing is he has with Terric. Is it going to be a bromance? I think it may end up that way, and I don’t mind at all. There’s something very manly and protective about Shamus , but at the same time he is very vulnerable and maybe needs to take a look at himself and admit a thing or two.

I think Terric knows what he wants, it’s Shamus that needs to sort himself out and stop making excuses for how he feels.

Stone is still such a great character who pops up. I love the big guy.

This series is very addictive. After reading this book I am even more addicted. Bummer I have to get on the reserve list again for Magic on the Hunt, down at local library.

Devon Monk has given us, death, resurrection, love, betrayal, kick ass magic wielding action scenes with hot guys throwing their arms out and looking all smexi while they shut gates and protect those they care for. That whole, wind blowing around them, eyes shut, head down, powerful stance thing that visually you see so well when reading.

Shamus and Terric really work their mojo together rather nicely. You actually want Shamus and Terric to get their thing happening, if that is what is in the storyline for them.

Allie is really becoming accepted by the Authority, but at the same time you can tell she is going to be so much more.

Daniel is still having me question what he has in store for his daughter. Sometimes he appears to protect her, but is that just to keep her alive so he can use her to get his immortality that he so craves. I hope Allie can trust her father to not throw her under the bus. There are just so many question marks surrounding his behaviour with Mikhail and what all the outcome of all Daniels preparation and inventing and blaa..blaa....

I do wonder about Violet’s bub, if Daniel can use Allie the way he does, what would stop him using the bub. Let’s face it, when it comes to Daniel, Devon keeps pulling all sorts of things out of a hat that as the reader you don’t see coming.

This is a really ‘cool’series that has enormous potential to be a badass long series of books. Devon’s imagination is quite incredible. She really was on fire with this book.

Looking for an uber cool urban fantasy series? Well this is it.

FAVE QUOTE:

“I wouldn’t want you to get in the shower and then pass out or some such . How about if I help you get out of your clothes? I’m an expert in platonic undressings.” He gave me that wicked smile.

“Give it a rest. I’m not going to strip naked in front of you, and I’d rather pee in private.”

“Half the injuries in a home happen in the bathroom. What kind of friend would I be to let you face that kind of danger alone? I mean , sure, you walked out of death , but this is a shower.”

“Shame. Get out of my bathroom.”

BOOK REVIEW - MAGIC ON THE STORM by DEVON MONK - ALLIE BECKSTROM # 4

By: Devon Monk
Published By: ROC
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 344 Pages

RATING : 4.5 SHAMUS AND TERRIC STARS!!!

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

Allison Beckstrom is committed to her work tracing illegal spells. Now, there's an apocalyptic storm bearing down on Portland, and when it hits, all the magic in the area will turn unstable and destructive. To stop it from taking out the entire city, Allie and her lover, the mysterious Zayvion Jones, must work with the Authority-the enigmatic arbiters of all things magic-and take a stand against a magical wildstorm that will obliterate all in its path...

BOOK REVIEW:

There is a mother of a storm coming and the Authority has to sort out what they are going to do about it. Hold on to your hats it’s going to be a bumpy ride. This storm could make or break magic as they know it. The hunger for the ultimate Power, can really turn a person to the dark side.

Shamus Flynn, what can I say but I love his character even more after this book. We are left wondering all the time about Terric and Shamus. Is this a Vishous and Butch( Black Dagger Brotherhood) bromance thing or am I reading waaaayyyyy too much into this.

Shame is a solid guy with such a smart mouth, I think I have me a crush on him.

Zay is still this big hunk of gorgeous, always there for Allie, but now we see more, as he doesn’t like to give too much away about himself. The respect he garners amongst his peers. I think Allie is just starting to realise she isn’t just dating a stud who is awesome at all things magic.

Allie is coming into her own more, in this book. She has her warehouse , her safe place for the hounds. Anthony is getting a tough love talking to. Is he able to stay on the right side of the track?

Stone. Oh how I want me one of those. He just seems to know when Allie really needs a helping hand. His energiser batteries are running a bit low in this book, poor lovey.

Daniel is still working his mind mojo. He isn’t as verbal, but when he needs to steer Allie in a direction only he can show, he pops up. I swear Daniel is like a walking Google on everything Magic, what he doesn’t know and have already put into place isn’t worth knowing. I STILL can’t decide if he has Allie’s best interests and the whole him and Violet connection. Kevin is who I think Violet should be with. I want to read more about Violet and Kevin. We get a glimpse in this book.

There is a rather exciting action scene when the storm decides to hit. I was like biting my nails as I was trying to figure out where I was in all this. There was shit flying everywhere, figure of speech of course. I was like, who? , what? I was even ducking.

And then!!!!!...............

See now that is why I have to pick up Magic at the Gate , straight away and start turning those pages.

Another great read from Devon Monk. It’s all very exciting!

BOOK REVIEW - MAGIC IN THE SHADOWS by DEVON MONK - ALLIE BECKSTROM # 3

By : Devon Monk
Published By : Harper Voyager
Released : Available Now
Details : Paperback from library , 489 Pages

RATING : 4.5 SHAMUS AND STONE STARS!!

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

Allison Beckstrom's magic has taken its toll on her, physically marking her and erasing her memories-including those of the man she supposedly loves. But lost memories aren't the only things preying on Allie's thoughts.

Her late father, the prominent businessman-and sorcerer-Daniel Beckstrom, has somehow channeled himself into her very mind. With the help of The Authority, a secret organization of magic users, she hopes to gain better control over her own abilities-and find a way to deal with her father...

BOOK REVIEW:

Talk about Jedi mind tricks. Dear ol dad is really working his mind mojo in this book. I do like this angle that Devon has taken with Allie’s character. For a man that she hadn’t seen for 7 years, to now living within her, listening, watching through her eyes, wow! Great angle, still lots of dad mystery that we need to understand.

I’m still not sure if Daniel is evil or if he is half evil when he wants to be or totally misunderstood. I think I have trouble getting my head around Violet and Daniel’s connection. Violet appears not evil , caring, sweet, intelligent, but at the same time she knew what her husband was up to. I do scratch my head when it comes to this relationship. Is Violet hiding another side like Poison Ivy from Batman? I can’t place these two together in a relationship without wondering about Violet’s motives. She appears sweet and caring, is she? Is Daniel this take over the world dude that would sacrifice his daughter for that power? Did he throw his partner under the bus to claim the sole patent or is there more to that story?

The Authority, who can Allie trust? Many thoughts spin through my head with this group. Jingo Jingo is just plain, wrong, creepy, I think.

The story line is really opening up now, we are getting to know Zay better. He is not so much a mystery anymore. He still has his secrets, but as the reader we are finally getting a deeper understanding of this Zen guy and what he is truly capable of.

Allie is now more in Zay’s world and having to prove herself.

I love where Stotts and Nola are going, kind of sweet.

Stone, what can I say, I just love the guy. I love his plumbing fascination, ha!

Shamus, I am really digging his smart ass attitude. He doesn’t appear like it, but he is a solid guy you want on your team. I want to know more.

There was a lot going on in this instalment, new characters, some of my Q’s are answered. I find Devon keeps the mystery of certain characters slowly unfolding within each book. She doesn’t like to give too much away, keeps reader guessing. Daniel is still quite a mystery, Violet has me wondering about the side of the fence she is on, not sure why, but I keep questioning her in my mind.

I’m looking forward to the next book , Magic on the Storm.

BOOK REVIEW - MAGIC IN THE BLOOD by DEVON MONK - ALLIE BECKSTROM # 2 - 4 STARS!!

By: Devon Monk
Published By : ROC Books
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 436 Pages

RATING : 4 MAGICALLY ORIGINAL STARS!

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

Working as a Hound-tracing illegal spells back to their casters-has taken its toll on Allison Beckstrom. But even though magic has given her migraines and stolen her recent memory, Allie isn't about to quit. Then the police's magic enforcement division asks her to consult on a missing persons case. But what seems to be a straightforward job turns out to be anything but, as Allie finds herself drawn into the underworld of criminals, ghosts, and blood magic.

BOOK REVIEW:

Allie is one tough , stubborn woman. She is really growing on me as a character. She is learning how to care, rather than lust after. She is starting to think more about herself and what she wants, needs in her life. Her memory loss, makes for a great way for Devon to explore Allie’s character. She really has to work hard at trying to hold onto those slithers of memory that pop into her head. Trying to remember Zayvion and what they had. To have your memories stolen from you randomly, would be a hard and frustrating thing to deal with.

Zay's character I am starting to connect with more. He really is becoming that solid guy that Allie needs. He was always gorgeous and mysterious, now he is more. Zay shows more of his emotions. Not just the poker faced, Zen guy, not just the guy that keeps grounding her, saving her. He is opening up more.

Violet and Kevin, I hope that goes somewhere. I have a feeling it will. I like Kevin’s character. He is all about being the mysterious bodyguard, lethal kind of magic dude. I can see Violet’s situation is not going to be an easy one. I love Kevin’s attentiveness.

Allie finds herself in a Beckstrom sandwich and it’s none too tasty. There are hungry ghosts and a sinister mad scientist ( well I like to look at this character as a mad scientist) . She is trying to survive Lon Trager and his minions. Pike wants her to meet the Pack.

Davy Silvers is a sweet guy who has become her wing man, as in he is in the wings , watching, helping keep her safe. I really like him. It’s a big thing for Allie to allow somebody to be there for her.

Detective Payne and Detective Love have just opened Allie’s eyes up to some of the real stuff going on with the Police Department.

Detective Stotts has now got Allie working for him and it is a dangerous, apparently cursed way to earn a buck. Stotts' past record with working with Hounds, leans towards the Hound not surviving. Can he be trusted?

Allie gets herself into more trouble and this time she will be lucky to survive. The odds are not good. Blood Magic is a pretty terrifying thing in the wrong hands. Unfortunately for Allie, it’s in the wrong hands.

Devon Monk weaves new characters, her wonderful imagination and a plot that is getting thicker and more intriguing into a great page turner. A whole new storyline is opening up. Being stubborn tends to run in the family.......

BOOK REVIEW - MAGIC TO THE BONE by DEVON MONK - ALLIE BECKSTROM # 1

By: Devon Monk
Published By: ROC BOOKS
Released : Available now
Details: Paperback from library, 355 Pages

RATING : 4 MYSTERIOUS ZAYVION STARS!!

Book Blurb : Taken From Goodreads

Using magic meant it used you back. Forget the fairy-tale, hocus-pocus, wave a wand and bling-o, sparkles and pixie dust crap. Magic, like booze, sex, and drugs, gave as good as it got.

Everything has a cost. And every act of magic exacts a price from its user - maybe a two-day migraine, or losing the memory of your first kiss. But some people want to use magic without paying, and they Offload the cost onto innocents. When that happens, it falls to a Hound to identify the spell's caster - and Allison Beckstrom's the best there is.

Daughter of a prominent Portland businessman, Allie would rather moonlight as a Hound than accept the family fortune - and the strings that come with it. But when she discovers a little boy dying from a magic Offload that has her father's signature all over it, Allie is thrown into the high-stakes world of corporate espionage and black magic.

Now Allie's out for the truth - and must call upon forces that will challenge everything she knows, change her in ways she could never imagine ... and make her capable of things that powerful people will do anything to control.

BOOK REVIEW:

This is a most awesome, refreshing, original, Urban Fantasy series.

Allie Beckstrom is a 25 yr old Hound. No, she doesn’t turn into a dog, she is all woman . Magic has apparently only been around for thirty years, or has it? Everybody can use magic, some better than others. There are rules, there are politics and there are murders. Hounds are needed to use their magic to help put away the rule breakers.

A world where anybody can use magic is bound to have its problems, well lots of problems. Hounds can use magic to find the signature of the spell caster. They work with the police.

Allie is a lone Hound for hire, who hates elevators, and confined spaces. She trusts nobody. She hasn’t had any reason, ever, to feel like she can trust in somebody other than herself. Her mother is on the other side of the world, no contact. Her father, Daniel Beckstrom, is the patent owner of the Beckstrom Storm Rod that sits atop his building. He is a powerful magic user, wealthy, with a lot of secrets. She has 5 more mums, well stepmums, and she is uber stubborn.

Allie wants nothing to do with her father or his money. He just wants her back, working for his company.

Allie hasn’t seen her father in 7 years. An Offloading spell is cast on Mama’s boy, a little 5 year old, and the signature is her father’s. Well, hell, that’s enough to storm up to daddy and confront him after 7 years. Offloading magic is illegal, THAT much magic . Sure some people get paid to be proxies, not a five year old boy.

If you use magic, it will demand something in return. Cast a disbursement spell and you can request the type of payment. Be it a migraine, fever etc. Forget to cast a disbursement spell and you will be in for the mystery, long, drawn out pain of payment.

Allie carries her leather journal around with her, noting her day’s events. Memory loss is another downside to using magic. She can have a bad case of , ‘have we met before?’

Enter Zayvion Jones, mystery man. What is his deal? Zayvion is one big question mark.

Zayvion is just gorgeous. He is there and knows how to save her when she gets in too deep. She is playing in the big kids sand box, a league she thinks she knows the rules, but does she?

There is a relationship that at first thought was quick, but having read more in the series, going in hard and fast, doesn’t always make for an easy relationship.

Devon Monk has such a brilliant idea with Hounding, without going that whole wolf/dog thing. Rain, cold and darkness are her mood setters. Allie isn’t a karate kid, she uses magic to get herself out of situations, and unfortunately then into situations. It’s all about the magic. Devon doesn’t hold back on giving Allie a beating.

I thought this was a great start to a series. Devon has to take the time to world build for the reader as she has something here that is original, to me anyway. I did have some questions, but, I gather the answers will unfold as the series continues. Devon likes to keep a bit of mystery lingering for the reader. I am up to book 3, so I know that my questions are being answered.

This is only the beginning....Devon Monk possesses a wonderful imagination, that keeps on surprising me.
