BOOK REVIEW - ON THE EDGE by ILONA ANDREWS - THE EDGE # 1 - ADULT URBAN FANTASY - ACE BOOKS

By: Ilona Andrews
Published By: Ace Books
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 309 Pages

RATING: 5 AWESOME URBAN FANTASY STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Rose Drayton lives on the Edge, between the world of the Broken (where people drive cars, shop at Wal-Mart, and magic is a fairy tale) and the Weird (where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny). Only Edgers like Rose can easily travel from one world to the next, but they never truly belong in either.

Rose thought if she practiced her magic, she could build a better life for herself. But things didn’t turn out how she planned, and now she works a minimum wage, off the books job in the Broken just to survive. Then Declan Camarine, a blueblood noble straight out of the deepest part of the Weird, comes into her life, determined to have her (and her power).

But when a terrible danger invades the Edge from the Weird, a flood of creatures hungry for magic, Declan and Rose must work together to destroy them—or they’ll devour the Edge and everyone in it.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I really loved On The Edge, the first book in The Edge, series by the Ilona Andrews writing team.

Kate Daniels series, by the Ilona Andrews had me seeing with each book, the improvement of story telling. I like Curran , but I think he doesn’t get enough air time. Declan is our knight in shining armor, or at least the lad to the rescue and he shines with both dialogue and air time in, On The Edge.

He made an entrance.

“I Declan Riel Martel, ade Dominik, ade Logran, ade Rotibar, Earl of Camarine, Lord of Longshire, Syvator, and Veres, hereby swear to fulfill three tasks given to me within the next two weeks by ...” He looked at her.

“Rose Drayton.” He owned more titles than TitleMax.

A tall man stood at the edge of the driveway. A cape of gray wolf fur billowed about him, revealing reinforced-leather armor, lacquered gray to match his cape, and a long elegant sword at his waist. His hair was a dark, rich gold, and it framed his face in a glacial cascade that fell over his left shoulder without a trace of curl.

“Well, you didn’t expect me to slap him with an open hand. One simply doesn’t.” Declan smiled back. It was a genuine smile, and it transformed his face. Instead of a blueblood, in the space of a moment he became a man, a living breathing man, irresistibly handsome, and funny, and someone she wished she knew. The effect was shocking.

Rose Drayton is an awesome female lead. She looks after her two younger brothers, Jack who is 8 years old and Georgie, who is 10 years old were really great additions to this story. I really liked these little boys. All three characters live in The Edge.

Both little boys have their own magic. Rose can flash and she is quite precise.

“Rose?” Georgie raised his head from Declan’s shoulder.

“Yes?”

“I’d like to be George from now on,” he said.

“Okay,” she said. “ That will be fine, George.”

He nodded and said, “I’m hungry.”

Rose and Declan do a lot of verbal sparring. I rather enjoyed it.

He nodded to the boys. “Start on the pancakes. Your sister and I need to have a talk.” He moved toward her.

She raised her head. If he thought he could order her around in her own house, he was in for a hell of a surprise.

“I won’t bite,” he said. “Not until you’re in my bed, anyway.”

“Never happen.”

He looked her over very slowly. “If I chose to molest you, it wouldn’t be an attempt. And you would be most enthusiastic about it.”

“You’re the most infuriating woman I have ever met. I swear not to molest the boys,” he ground out.

Rose put down her fork. “Lord Submarine...”

“Camarine.”

“Whatever.”

“If you touch me, I’ll hit you with this chair,” she ground out.

“I had no idea you enjoyed rough courtship,” he said with a straight face. “It was never my particular favorite, but I’ll do my best to play along, provided I’ll get you in the end.”

Rose opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

“Would you like me to be quiet?” he asked.

“Yes!”

“If you kiss me, I promise to be quiet for a very long time.”

“I mean to have you, Rose, you and all of your thorns. I’m a disagreeable and stubborn bastard, but I’m not a fool. You didn’t really expect me to pass you up, did you?”

“So you do think I’m handsome.”

She actually stopped for a second. “Declan, I’m not blind.”

He looked disgustingly smug.

“Oh, get over yourself.”

“Not just handsome but mind-bogglingly handsome,” he said.

“I’m afraid my reputation among my peers as been somewhat tarnished.” He walked up the porch and held the door open for her.

“Why?”

“It became known that I had a rather fertile imagination, when it came to private activities.”

She stared at him. “What sort of private activities?”

This time he did smile, and it turned his face wicked. “Disrobe, and I’ll be happy to demonstrate.”

He glanced at her , indignant. “I don’t go kaboom.”

This was a very original idea for an urban fantasy. I totally dug it. I loved the easy, non complicated, non over-info-dumped, world building. One paragraph explained it all to me.

They lived between worlds : on one side lay the Weird and the other the Broken. Two dimensions, existing side by side, like mirror images of each other. In the place where the dimensions “touched,” they intersected slightly, forming a narrow ribbon of land that belonged to both of them -- The Edge. In the Weird, magic pooled deeply; in the Edge it was a shallow trickle. But in the Broken, no magic shielded them at all.

Then another couple told me the rules.

“In the Edge, there are no police, no marshals, no sheriffs, or any kind of protection. There is no impartial third party. Instead, the entire community of East Laporte sits there and watches to see what will happen. Because there are so few of us, everyone knows everybody else and everything we do has consequences.”

She took a deep breath. “If a woman gets assaulted, it’s between her family and the family of her attacker. They might come to an agreement of some sort on restitution or punishment. Or they might spend the next few decades lying in wait with their guns trying to splatter each others’ brains all over the local greenery.”

I loved Declan from the start. He was polished, where Rose was just making her pennies stretch to the next day. She had no airs or graces.

She apparently needed some lessons in eating pancakes and etiquette.

He grimaced. “You’re a rude, vulgar, and you speak in an atrocious fashion. You’ll take so much work before you can be presentable. And you actually feel that you’re a suitable spouse for me?”

The first rule of etiquette a boy learns when he’s about to enter society is that civility is due to all women. No provocation, no matter how unjust and rudely delivered, can validate a man who fails to treat a woman with anything less than utmost courtesy.”

The boys hung on his every word. He glanced in her direction.

“I have met some incredibly unpleasant women, and I have never failed in this duty. But I must admit: your sister may prove my undoing.”

“Eat slowly,” the blueblood said. “Don’t cut your food with the fork. Cut it with the knife, and make the pieces small enough so you can answer a question without having to swallow first.”

Why me? “Right. Any other tips?”

There is your misunderstood character, William, who only wants to be loved. I really felt sorry for William, but he comes with some damage.

The man turned. He looked to be in his late twenties. He had a handsome face with a square jaw and sculptured cheekbones. No baby fat remained on his face. His cheeks were hollowed, his nose narrow and well cut. She scrutinized his deep-set hazel eyes. The eyes reassured her: they were honest and direct.

“He’s a guy. He likes action figures,” Georgie said helpfully. “He asked Rose on a date, but she didn’t go.”

“Does your sister go on dates often?”

“Every week,” Rose said.

“Never,” Georgie declared at the same time.

There is more than one villain in the story, but one really stands out.

“Such a lovely voice. I bet she’s succulent. Juicy.” Casshorn shivered.

“I think you might be insane,” she said.

“Sanity is overrated compared to happiness, my dear.”

One is a jerk who tried to take advantage, but karma is a biaatch.

“Piss off, Brad!” Latoya called from her table.

“Shut the fuck up, Mophead, before I come over there and make you swallow your teeth.”

Declan’s green eyes fixed on Rose. Brad couldn’t see his face, but she could. It was merciless and so iced over it was nearly cruel. “This is Brad?”

Rose was too mad to answer.

“Do you want to keep talking to him?” Declan asked.

“No.”

The blueblood rose. “Excuse me for a moment.” He nodded to Brad. “Let’s go chat.”

Latoya is a fun character, she gives Rose a fair go and speaks her mind. I really liked her.

Latoya thrust the Burger King’s door open. “Your new boyfriend is a psycho killer!”

“No, he isn’t. And he’s not my --“

“I’m telling you he’s a Navy SEAL or something. Or one of the commando ranger guys. You know the kind who survive in the woods by eating bugs and take down the whole camp of terrorists with a handgun and a small rock.”

I totally dug this book. It was a page turner from the start. I was held captive by this highly original world.

Up next , Bayou Moon # 2, William and Cerise's book. I just assumed the series would carry on , like Kate Daniels. I was just getting to know Declan and Rose. Not sure how I feel about no longer reading about these two. I could so see more in their story and the boys. I hope they pop up again.

A fantastic start to The Edge series that has me wanting to read more. ASAP!

GOODREADS

I started reading Kate Daniels series in August 2013. I had originally bought the first four books from the Book Depository, couple years earlier, but with blogging, it can take me a while to get around to some book series.

Then it came time to start reading the series, knowing I could have a good binge without having to wait for too many to be released.

The pseudonym Ilona Andrews is made up of  the husband and wife writing team , Ilona and Gordon.

I really enjoy this urban fantasy series, it is rich in all things urban fantasy...errr... except, don't expect this adult urban fantasy to come with too much of the * waggles eyebrows *  smexi.

They simply brush over it.

I'm used to it now. I think I will fall over backwards if they actually give me a full on adult smexi scene between Kate and Curran.

Don't expect to get the Bones and Cat smexi we adore in Night Huntress series, it just ain't on the cards for this series.

But, we did get something in Magic Bleeds # 4. I took this comment from my review.

Hallelujah!

Praise The Lord!

Curran and Kate actually make it into the sack in this installment.

Now, I am not being a perv, it is just unusual for an adult urban fantasy series with a guy like Curran who is all ALPHA and a chick like Kate who is in her own right an Alpha type character and an adult series to boot, to not get a little horizontal tango time going on.

Booyah!!

But, it doesn't stop me enjoying this series. It is a story rich in characters and world building.

Kate and Curran have a slow relationship. The series really is about Kate Daniels and what shenanigans she gets up to and is a part of. Curran always makes it into the story when it counts. He's just not all that much of a main character like Bones is in Night Huntress.

Some wonderful sub characters. Derek is a fave of mine. Aunt B is a straight shooter. Andrea and Raphael are another great set of characters and Doolittle is always there for medical help.

I will admit this is a series that took me a good couple books to get into. I know it is hugely popular and I am glad I kept reading. I will admit I gave Magic Bites # 1,  3.5 stars, but each book got better and better for me. I think I explain myself in my review. I wasn't the only one who got off to a bumpy start with this series. So I think I was fair with my rating.

In saying that, I am quite addicted to the series now.

You can read all my reviews HERE just scroll down to the start.

I have read all the little novella's ( inside anthologys )  that I can get my hands on. I adored Jim and Dali's novella - Magic Dreams # 4.5. I wasn't overly fussed at the other couple I read. Jim and Dali are great characters.

I'm excited to see there is another Jim & Dali novella releasing inside the anthology Night Shift - titled Magic Steals - November 25th 2014. I really LOVED their little story in Magic Dreams which was inside the anthology - Hexed. Jim and Dali are a couple that I think need more airtime in this series, I think having these novellas is my way of getting more of them. I really do like them. Once you understand who they are, you will know why. Dali is a little different. I could quite honestly have a spin-off series with these two and I do love Dali's mamma. She is hilarious.

This fan made vid is probably the best I can find
that gives a good idea about the series.

Magic Breaks #7 is releasing 29th July 2014.
I just have to read Magic Rises.
I keep getting it from library and running out of time to read it.
I can see from Goodreads that there are at least another 3 books in the series to write.

This is an urban fantasy series I do highly recommend,
it is uber popular and gets very addictive.

Another series I keep getting from library and not enough time to crack open is their - The Edge series. It sounds great!

I'll get there :D

Pop over and check out their web page HERE it's all kinds of wonderful. I nabbed me some wallpaper.

BOOK REVIEW - NIGHT BROKEN by PATRICIA BRIGGS - MERCEDES THOMPSON # 8 - ADULT URBAN FANTASY - ORBIT - ACE BOOKS

By: Patricia Briggs
Published By: Orbit Books
Released : Available Now
Details : Hardback from library, 341 Pages

RATING: 5 ADAM STARS!!

Blurb : Goodreads

An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from her new boyfriend. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.

Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the farthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s ex is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

What is one of the golden rules of marriage?

Don’t let your hubs invite the ex wife to stay.

Ok, well she is being stalked by somebody who is even hard for Mercy, Adam and the pack to kill.

WHY WON’T YOU DIE!???

This character is one of the more difficult ones to contain.

I didn’t realize the females in the pack liked Adam’s ex wife more than Mercy. I was rather shocked at this information, considering the ex didn’t like Adam being a werewolf and she didn’t feel comfortable around the wolves.

Hence, why she left him in the first place.

Then she didn’t feel comfortable being around the pack without Adam. Make your mind up woman.

Christy played her part well. She will annoy the shiz out of you. You will want to give her a stinky dead fish slap for her behavior towards Mercy. Patricia brought the ex to the story in true ex-wife-manipulating, style.

Mercy not only has Christy-the-manipulating-queen, to contend with, and she does it in mighty fine classy style too, she also has to put up with some pack members behaving badly and a Christy stalker.

I knew all the things I wanted to say to Christy. But Mercy took the high road on more than one occasion. I kept having fill in comments that I would have said to Christy. I was amusing myself to no end.

I love watching Adam and Mercy together. They have something very deep and trusting. I love how Patricia writes their relationship.

He looked up at me. There was heat in his gaze-- there is always some spark of heat when Adam looks at me, but there was also need that was deeper than sexual. I could see the shadow caused by worry, possessiveness, and a vulnerability that allowed him, the Alpha wolf, to stay on the ground when I was standing. That vulnerability ( and the possessiveness) meant that Adam would never let me leave him, as he’d let Christy leave him.

I didn’t like him vulnerable to anything, even to me. I pulled on Adam’s hand, and he stood up.

“I love you, too,” I told him, and he smiled because he’d let me see what he felt.

I love reading Tad and his fun comments. He is a favorite of mine.

I was almost out the door, and Tad was back under the Beetle, when he said, “When Adam’s ex drives you into making sweet things with chocolate, just remember I like brownies with lots of frosting but no nuts.”

Tad took a third muffin and ate it in two bites. His voice was muffled with food when he said, “Nasty piece of work, him. Are you up for this?”

I shrugged. “Sure. If it gets too bad... how would you like a roommate?”

“If she can cook like this, okay by me.”

“I was talking about me,” I told him. I was joking. But there was a cold knot in my stomach anyway.

He came around the counter and kissed the top of my head. “Poor Mercy. Let’s go fix something you know how to fix. It’ll make you feel better.”

Tad and Mercy have such a great working relationship.

When I’d met Tad, a little over ten years ago, he’d only been a kid, and he’d been running this shop himself because his dad had gone on a two-month drinking binge after Tad’s mom had died of cancer. He’d been nine going on fifty then, and the only thing that had changed since was that someone had rubbed off the bright and shiny cheer that had been his gift to the world.

Stefan fans, fear not. He does eventually make it into the story. I was beginning to check under the beds for him. I miss Stefan when he isn’t around. Sadly there was no Scooby Doo van.

Seeds are dropped for the next installment, # 9 in 2015. This is a series I truly love revisiting.

I love the US cover art, it makes me happy. I sadly had to look at the Aussie cover art while reading this installment, which just does nothing for me. Sorry about being picky, but, gahhh I do have trouble with the Aussie cover art.

So glad I loved what was inside the pages.

Another page turning read, with great sub characters and a villain that was not an easy fight.

Check out the new characters brought into the fold.

I loved the ending.

The last line in the book was...unexpected...yet expected:D

Includes a free bonus: a Kate Daniels novella, "Magic Gifts".

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Raphael and Andrea are having their issues in their own book Gunmetal Magic.

Raphael pulls the oldest trick in the book and I could feel Andrea’s hurt. I liked how she just got on with her investigation, no matter how much she was hurting on the inside.

I will kill you. I will hurt you, you wretched bastard.

I think we could all see that it was just a ploy of Raphael’s because she was dumb as dirt and that doesn’t seem Raphael’s style.

The whole Curran and Kate pre-relationship shenanigans, in the previous books, I found were similar to how Raphael and Andrea behaved in this one.

I think what I am trying to say is I didn’t feel like there was a great enough distinction between both sets of character couples when they were in drama mode with each other.

“Don’t change shape,” Raphael snapped.

“Shut up.”

“Be good or I’ll kiss you in front of everybody.”

“Hell no,” I snarled. I had to hold on and live through this so I could punch him in the face. It was a great goal.

We know as the reader that they will get back together. It is inevitable, we are more or less going through the motions.

“Anything to say?”

“I’m sorry I hurt you.”

“Too little, too late. I’m tired of waiting for you to stop running away from who you are. You want to know what the best thing about Rebecca is?”

His eyes were pure ruby and they burned. I was hanging on by a thread.

“She isn’t you.”

“Hey, babycakes,” he said into the phone.

Babycakes? Babycakes! “You want to act psycho? You haven’t seen psycho yet.”

“I’m not worried,” he said. “To go psycho, you’d have to pull that stick out of your ass and we both know that won’t be happening.”

Raphael is obviously very different to Curran, but,  I must admit I did feel like Andrea’s character and Kate’s character were quite similar. I think Andrea behaves quite like Kate.

We definitely get to understand Andrea and her childhood pain, more. Her vengeance on those that did her wrong and how Raphael can bring her back from that. Raphael learns to understand the reason she took her stand against joining the Pack.

The thorn that was in their relationship.

The Ilona Andrews team bring us vipers, priests, the draugr, gods and demons and Roman.

I quite enjoyed Roman. I want to have him in the books more. I think once I got past that robe of his I was sold more.

“You have a problem with pants?” Raphael asked.

Roman pulled his robe apart, revealing a pair of black jeans underneath. “I always wear my pants. I just don’t want to deal with that retarded outfit. I don’t even know how to put it on.”

“Wear the fatigues,” I told him. “It won’t kill you. Not wearing them might.”

Roman sighed, rolled his eyes, and stripped off his robe and jeans, revealing a muscled torso. Well. Someone worked out. Roman pulled on the fatigue pants, grabbed the black boots, folded the bottom of the pants in a practiced move, and stuffed his feet into his boots.

Hmmm.

Next he took the ACU top and rolled up both sleeves in a perfectly even summer regulation cuff. Raphael stared at him. Roman pulled the ACU on and flexed. “Makes your arm bigger, see?”

“You asshole,”I punched him in the shoulder.

“Gentle! I bruise easily.” He rubbed his carved biceps and I caught a glimpse of a tattoo on his arm; a skull wearing a beret. Army Ranger.

Now I had seen everything.

Ascanio Ferara is a fun sidekick character at the moment, but he feels like he will get a meatier role. It’s like we are biding our time until we see Ascanio in action. He is floating about at the moment.

Waiting to WOW us.

Fifteen going on thirty, with glossy black hair and green eyes. Ascanio was beautiful. Not just pretty. Not just attractive, beautiful. He had that whole fallen angel thing going -- there was a devious, sly mind behind that innocent face and pretty eyes.

I can’t help reinforcing this feeling I have with how Julie behaves around him and how she also behaves around Derek.

Derek got frosty replies studded with spikes and if Ascanio was present, she turned into a foul-mouthed sarcastic devil.

Which one will Julie end up with? Derek or Ascanio?

Or both!

Now imagine , we know Ascanio at the age of fifteen wasn’t shy for a bit of menage action. Can't see the Ilona Andrews team writing that.

Heheee!

I am now used to the detail in Ilona Andrews world with the zippo detail in the smexi part of the story.

HA!

We had had sex hundreds of times. We had tried dozens of positions, we had flirted with our kinks, we had long ago learned how and where to touch to make each other moan and gasp and to delay each other’s pleasure until the sweet anticipation of release became almost torture... and we used none of it. We made love in the tried-and-true missionary position right there on the hideous purple carpet in the hallway, awkward and impatient, fumbling about like two virgin teenagers caught in a selfless race to make each other happy.

It was the best sex I had ever had.

Yup. That’s a sex scene in an Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels book.

I feel like asking. 'Was that good for you?'

Not that I’m complaining, but Raphael is a bouda and he is in earlier books noted for being a bit of a sex maniac. But when it comes down to the hanky panky...

...that’s it!

I gotta say I am so glad that Jeaniene Frost can give me some Bones and Cat action in Night Huntress. J

I really like Doolittle, he is starting to come out of his shell.

Doolittle walked through the door. “Shouldn’t you be resting?”

“I’m saving the world,” I told him.

Doolittle grabbed his throat and smashed his head into Raphael’s face. It was the most vicious head butt I had ever seen. Raphael fell back. Doolittle snarled something under his breath and walked away.

Another great time had inside Kate Daniel's world of magic and tech and investigations into the deaths and disturbances of this world. The creatures that come out to play and the smexi lads that keep these kickass ladies fighting for their rights. They make the guys bend to their rules or at least compromise.

Maybe Grendel needs a girlfriend too.

Bring. On . Magic Rises.

Michelle

Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost.

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

AND THEN!!

29TH JULY 2014

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…

BOOK REVIEW - MAGIC GIFTS by ILONA ANDREWS - KATE DANIELS # 5.4 - ACE BOOKS - URBAN FANTASY - NOVELLA

By: Ilona Andrews
Published By: ACE Books
Released : Available Now
Details: From the library, Back of Gunmetal Magic # 5.5, 107 pages

RATING: 4 VIKING STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

This novella takes place at the same time as Andrea’s book, right after MAGIC SLAYS, and the two stories intersect.

A dinner date after a hard day at work sounds heavenly. Of course, when that date is between the Beast Lord and Kate Daniels, things don’t go as planned. Before you know it, undead are running amok, heads are being chopped off, lawyers are deployed and used with extereme prejudice, and drunk vikings are calling people out.

Read at your own risk.

MAGIC GIFTS appears as a bonus in the back of GUNMETAL MAGIC, Andrea’s book

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

I did laugh out loud at the way the Ilona Andrews writing team started this novella off, with tentacles from some squiddy creature.

Why. Not.

Lots of things are happening in this novella. The Guild is squabbling over who should be in charge. A deadly necklace is slowly going to kill a little seven year old.

What type of mother does what she did? I am still a bit stunned she did that.

She needed a stinky dead fish slap from me!

The Vikings, The Four Horsemen and ‘HE’ make for some great adventures for Curran and Kate.

Yes. Curran is getting a fair bit of airtime in this novella.

The usual blink and you will miss the smexi moment.

“Is that your gun or are you happy to see me?”

“Mhm, a challenge.” He nipped the skin on the back of my neck, sending electric aftershocks down through me. Some men got excited by white lace and a translucent negligee. My love muffin got excited by a woman dressed to murder. There was probably something deeply twisted about that. Lucky for me, negligees were never my thing.

I love those words of endearment Curran and Kate say to each other. I’m not sure if I said that sarcastically or not?

He kissed me again. “You’re finally getting the hang of this whole badass thing.”

“I was always badass.”

“No, you thought you were badass and talked a lot of crap.” He wrapped his arms around me.

Aha. “Let me go.”

“You have time.” He kissed my neck again. Every nerve in my body came to attention.

“No, I don’t. I have people waiting.” I pulled free from him and kissed him back. He pulled me close, locking me within his arms. Mhm, Curran. I really didn’t want to leave.

“Come on.”

“No. Have to go.”

“It won’t take long.”

* sigh * It never does.

The thing with this Urban Fantasy series is Ilona Andrews just don’t want to write the smexi...well...smexi. They like to skirt around it. I expect it now. I just laugh and maybe roll my eyes when I get to these little tete a tete’s.

HA! Again, not sure if I was saying that sarcastically. I think I may stomp my foot and pout until we get a great scene with these two.

Curran is the BEAST LORD. Apparently it is all very private behind the smexi doors.

A rather funny scene with Ghastek and Johan.

"They need a lesson in hospitality," Ghastek said.
"I'll show you hospitality," Johan sucked in some air.
"Don't do it," Ghastek warned.
Johan hacked. The gob of spit landed on the vamp's forehead.
"Suck on that!" Johan pivoted to Derek. "You're next!"

This was a great little teaser for Gunmetal Magic.

Raphael!! What are you doing? Andrea was only trying to be difficult. You wouldn’t have it any other way.

Now, I must crack open Gunmetal Magic , ASAP. Also I am four days overdue at the library. :p

An entertaining read, with much ado about something, going on.

Turns out this is not an isolated incident, and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it—fast, or the city and everyone dear to her might pay the ultimate price . . .

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

The husband and wife writing team of Ilona Andrews are keeping Kate uber busy in this installment.

The girl needs a pedicure and a well earned spa treatment with the amount of busy, busy saving and wielding of Slayer her sword about like the kick ass chickie babe she is.

I really enjoyed this installment, villains are popping up making Kate work her fanny off to save those she loves and basically the world.

Yes! There is heavy duty shiz hitting the pavement and it’s a killer for those of you who aren’t human.

Ghastek is fainting. Not a good thing when he is powering a rogue vampire.

Kate is non-stop. She got herself a to-do list a mile long.

Bridge Trolls, sleep bombs, escaping kid, sacrifices, devices, and Ascanio the fifteen year old Italian with a penchant for ménages... the list goes on.

Kate has got herself some paying work at Cutting Edge her new business. One thing leads to another and the world of magic users lives are threatened.

Kate to the rescue.

Along the way Kate will find out more about her family tree and question Curran’s motives.

Kate has her hands full with The Lighthouse Keepers and she isn’t going to stand for their shiz.

Saiman makes an appearance and has been suitably punished by Curran.

Speaking of Curran, I am beginning to feel like the Ilona Andrews team can’t be fussed with intimate scenes. LOL! Seriously...I almost feel like they want to get it over and done with.

Quick!

I am rather baffled at this.

Adult Urban Fantasy. Will we ever get a nice, reasonably lengthy sex scene?

Not that I am a perv. I am not. But, how do I word this without sounding like a voyeur?

Curran and Kate are quite formal with each other. They love each other. I want to give these two a good shake. They find it easier to belt each other up.

I kicked him in the head. The pressure of the past forty-eight hours rampaged inside me like a storm, and I’d sunk all of it into the kick. The impact hit his jaw at an angle. Curran staggered back. I spun and snapped another kick. He dodged. Another. Curran moved forward and right. My kick missed by a hair. He grabbed my shin with his left hand, clamping it between his arm and his side, and swept my other leg from under me. Nice. A kung fu takedown.

I fell back. The pavement slapped my back. I rolled back up and hammered an uppercut to his chin. Hitting him in the body was useless. Might as well pummel a tank. The head was my only chance.

Curran snarled. Blood dripped from a cut on his cheek. I’d opened a gash with my kick.

I threw a left hook. He knocked my arm out of the way and shoved me back. I twisted out of the way on pure instinct- damn it, he was fast - dropped into a crouch, and swiped his legs from under him. He jumped up, avoiding the kick, and I took a knee to the head.

Ow.

They did give me some words of endearment. Sugar woogums and His Furriness and a bath tub scene.

I can see Kate loves Julie and will give her life for her if that is what it takes to keep Julie safe and well. Kate loves Grendel. Kate will do anything for her friends, pretty much anything for the whole magic community to keep them safe. Kate loves Curran.

She is a heroine. She fights the good fight.

BUT!!

When it comes to Kate and Curran...it is so darn methodical. Sure they get naked...finally, but...

What is it that I am missing?

I want. NEED to see Curran really let loose on his emotions. He is wound tight like a spring. I get that he is THE BEAST LORD. He has responsibilities and he has to assume a persona in front of his pack and Kate must now show only strength in front of the pack.

As far as the urban fantasy world that Ilona Andrews team have built...I love it. It is dark and gritty and full of villains and intrigue.

The books took off from book 3 for me, personally. Kate gets better and better. I just need Curran to keep up.

He is THE BEAST LORD!

He takes quite a back seat in each book and normally really surfaces near the end where they normally team up to fight evil villains.

He did pop up a bit more in this one.

I want him up front and center more. I want to see him let those emotions out more, not just getting growly...but release the Curran that is only for Kate's eyes.

It is very much the Kate show this series and I get that as it is called the Kate Daniels series, but...

Dang I am doing a lot of buts.

I am excited to know more about the sub characters that entered this installment.

Andrea gets some great air time with Raphael nowhere in her sight.

Solution , give these two their own book, Gunmetal Magic # 5.5.

Always a fast paced ride with Kate at the helm. Never a dull moment in her life. I am addicted and shall keep riding the Kate train until it stops.

BOOK REVIEW - MAGIC BLEEDS by ILONA ANDREWS - KATE DANIELS # 4 - ACE BOOKS - ADULT URBAN FANTASY

By: Ilona Andrews
Published By : Ace Books
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback , 349 Pages

RATING: 4.5 LET'S GET IT ON... STARS!!

Blurb : Goodreads

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren't for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose.

Kate Daniels works for the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle - especially if they involve Atlanta's shapeshifting community. When she's called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar on the border between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers that there's a new player in town. One who's been around for thousands of years - and who rode to war at the side of Kate's father. This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curren, the Beast Lord, to handle. Because this time Kate will be taking on family.

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

Hallelujah!

Praise The Lord!

Curran and Kate actually make it into the sack in this installment.

Now, I am not being a perv, it is just unusual for an Urban Fantasy series with a guy like Curran who is all ALPHA and a chick like Kate who is in her own right an Alpha type character and an adult series to boot, to not get a little horizontal tango time going on.

Booyah!!

Once I finished Magic Bleeds I took the time to analyse. Yes, I analysed Kate and Curran’s relationship from what I garnered from this installment.

My thoughts:

Kate is all woman and she fights for those she cares about. She never backs down and accepts challenges placed in front of her. She is fierce in this book and has a very fierce competitor in the villain who is very skilled and quite a match for Kate.

She has a big sword.

Curran is off doing his Alpha shiz like he normally does in each book. He pops his head in from time to time and , usually towards the end of each book they battle side by side as Curran can’t let Kate have all the fun.

* whispers * Plus he likes her.

Curran totally digs Kate and doesn’t want to have her running from him, so he takes his Lion time and spends four books slowly courting her, even though he is a little deceiving with his courting.

Anyone for soup?

Time to move some furniture about.

Right back at ya!

That kind of tells me a lot about Curran. If he can’t feel that he can court her out in the open, then he knows he has to take it slow and deal with winning Kate over.

He knows Kate has to let her walls down and come to him with her heart. I think Curran was sold a lot earlier on with Kate than she was on him.

What I loved about this book is we saw Kate make Curran, The Beast Lord compromise.

“I don’t do collapsing.”

“Of course not. What was I thinking...”

His voice was rock-steady. “We don’t live in a safe-world. I can’t give you the white picket fence, and if I did, you’d set it on fire.”

The lad knows what he needs to agree to, to have Kate in his life. He can’t cage her. He can’t make demands of her. He has to tread carefully, or he will spook her.

She isn’t one of his ‘females’ who he beds, because he can at the snap of his fingers. Kate knows very well who Curran is, but she doesn’t bow just because he is THE BEAST LORD.

She makes him work for it.

Curran is only six years older than Kate. It is time to settle down. But he needs Kate to come to him. They get off to a rocky start with tempers flying over a dinner date that fell apart.

The first sign of Kate’s heart hurting.

But in true Kate style she won’t let Curran explain, she just goes about trying to save those in need, while Curran tries hard with modern technology to connect with her.

HA!

Talk to the hand cause the face don't wanna know.

I love Grendel. This was another way of us seeing Kate needs to love something. Julie was the other example.

I am totally seeing something with Derek and Julie. Not in a book 5 way, but in maybe a spin off, or a book when she is old enough. There were hints of ...something in this book. I always watch for little seeds being dropped in story line. Maybe I am wrong? Maybe it has already been written, hehee! I am still catching up on this series and I stay away from future book blurbs.

Time will tell .

Derek is a loved character and Julie seems to be tucked away for safe keeping until needed.

Derek nodded at the vehicle. “Who is that?”

“Your replacement.”

He led me away from the front gate to a narrow side door.

“You replaced me with a shaved poodle?”

“He’s got mad skills.”

I do enjoy a good kick ass fight scene. We get those in each of the books in this installment. I do have this thing where I kind of dislike the power of healing. I like a character to get a good biffing where they need help.

Healing powers kinda makes it all a bit easy to get beaten to a pulp within an inch of your life and then let somebody fix you up.

Good as new.

I would love to see Kate be without that healing Doc Doolittle and see her struggle to stay alive. Brings more meaning to her being belted up and then fixed up. Can be a bit too easy sometimes.

I think I want to see Curran more involved with the series. I know it is the Kate Daniels series. I get that. She is numero uno on the pages, but I feel like I am missing Curran on the pages.

Maybe now, we might see more of Curran gracing the pages.

What I love about the Night Huntress series is Bones and Cat get quite a lot of time together on the pages. Bones is a very commanding character and so is Cat. I want to see Curran be more impressive on paper.

He is after all... *stands with legs wide and fists on hips*

 THE BEAST LORD

I have really grown to love Kate. She is very selfless, she assesses situations and just goes in and does what needs to be done. She cares more than she wants people to know. She can have hurt feelings, and be tired and pushed to the limit, but she dusts herself off and goes and does what needs to be done.

I’m in for the long haul on this series. I’m very interested to see what happens from that ending.

Visually always colorful and Kate has earned her Urban Fantasy stripes. She is kickass and would seem unbeatable.

Will villains take a vacation long enough for Kate to get her HEA?

BOOK REVIEW by Michelle:

“Just reflecting on the fact that when the Universe punches you in the teeth, it never lets you fall down. It kicks you in the ribs a couple times and dumps mud on your head.”

The husband and wife writing team of Ilona Andrews have got it going on in this installment.

Yehaaa!

We start with a Banshee up a pole which has no real impact on the story line other than Kate is back , doing what she does best, helping those in need.

I got to say, Kate has come a long way in my eyes. I love her. She kicks butt, and takes me on an exciting escapism. I dream of being Kate. Like dude, this chick does not have a down day where she sits about reading mags and doing her nails. The only down days she has is when she is out cold.

Literally.

Curran, how I love thee, but there is still too much teasing and scooting around the edges. I know these two are going to be getting it on, eventually.

MATING.

There is that stolen kiss that is becoming quite pent up with frustration on both their parts. Kate walked right into the naked dinner challenge. I'm face planting watching them only getting to first base.

Come. On.

I do get why we are left waiting.

Frustrated. Much.

I can totally see what this duo of writers is doing. Kate now has become such a worthy would-be mate for Curran. She just doesn’t realize it yet.

She is such an Alpha female character. She is loyal, she puts Curran in his box, she fights for essentially her would-be pack even though they aren’t hers. She fights like they are a part of her. She fights for the other were’s . She has friends whether she wants to admit it or not. She cares.

“Friends are a dangerous thing,” I told him. “You feel responsibility for them. You want to keep them safe. You want to help and they throw you off balance, and the next thing you know you’re sitting there crying, because you didn’t make it in time. They make you feel helpless. That’s why my father wanted to make me into a sociopath. A sociopath has no empathy. She just focuses on her purpose.”

“Didn’t quite work out that way,” Jim said quietly.

She really is a cool chickie babe.

She does it Kate’s way and often behind Curran’s back.

Could he do it better?

Who knows?

As I walked back to civilization, I realized that for the first time in the six months I had known Curran, we had managed to have a conversation and part ways without wanting to kill each other. I found that fact deeply troubling.

He is always there with a RawrrrRRRrrRRrr to scoop her half dead body up and bring her back to the good Doc Doolittle to be patched up.

I want to see more of Curran in the books.

Kate is hiding herself. Still wanting to protect those around her. I had already figured out what her secret was. I personally can't imagine Curran in all the times her blood had been spilt and she was unconscious, not having her checked out. Or is that me being too much of a suspicious person. He knows she runs scared. He knows not much about her family. Her heritage. Jim's seen her burn her blood. That would raise flags for me.

Yeah. I was one to talk. When it came to hiding one’s identity, I was an expert. I burned my bloody bandages, so nobody could identify me by the magic in my blood. I hid my power. I tried very hard not to make friends and mostly succeeded. Because when my secret came to life, I wouldn’t end up on top of a telephone pole. I would be dead and all my friends would be dead with me.

We got Derek and Jim and Raphael, who is rather dynamite in this instalment.

Raphael sizzles. He is very captivating.

Raphael looked ... There were no words. I had explained my plan on the phone and he arrived wearing leather: black, shiny boots up to his knees, black leather pants that showed off his legs, and a black leather cuirass that molded to him like a second skin. A shotgun hung over his shoulder. An oversized sword, three feet long and nearly six inches wide, rested at his waist in a short sheath, completing his ensemble. The sword was too heavy for any normal human and covered with black runes etched into the upper portion of the blade. Coupled with the rich waterfall of Raphael’s black hair and his smoky blue eyes, the effect was devastating.

Raphael wore black boots, fitted black leather pants that molded to him with heart-shattering results, and nothing else.

As he passed me, he leaned to Curran and handed him a paper ffan folded from some sort of flyer.

Curran looked at the fan. “What?”

“An emergency precaution, Your Majesty. In case the lady faints.”

Curran stared at him.

Raphael strode toward the Pit, turned , flexed a bit, and winked at me.

“Give me that,” I told Curran. “I need to fan myself.”

I do like Jim and he does things his way too, sometimes. He is head of security and he is very good at his job and uber protective. A very loyal guy. A total hottie.

Jim’s black, fur-trimmed cloak flared behind him as he walked, revealing a black leather vest, black pants, and black steel-toed boots. His body was toned to the point of absurd: he looked like a prizefighter in his prime, his thick muscle crisply defined, his stride loose, his bearing broadcasting bad-ass. An ugly scowl sat on his face. He looked as if he wanted to punch somebody.

“You need a pair shades,” I told him. “Someone might mistake you for a yuppie.”

“Never happen.”

Curran became The Beast Lord at the tender age of fifteen. He is a worthy Beast Lord, but I love how Kate talks to him however she wants. It does make me giggle.

I’ve taken your food, under duress, but I did take it. You rescued me once or twice, and you’ve seen me near naked. I realize that you’re judging this situation by shapeshifter standards, and you expect me to fall on my back with my legs spread.”

“Not necessarily.” His voice matched mine in calmness. “You can fall on your hands and knees if you prefer. Or against the wall. Or on the kitchen counter. I suppose I might let you be on top, if you make it worth my while.”

Raphael and Andrea are doing that whole Curran and Kate scooting about each other, too, thing. Raphael isn’t used to having to work for a nookie. Andrea is much like Kate. She won’t just lay down and roll over.

Kate and Raphael swap advice on wooing. Ha!

“These guys, they’re all bad and aggressive as shit, and everybody wets themselves when they walk by, and then they meet some girl and suddenly they’re not uber-alphas; they are just misunderstood little boys who want to talk about their feelings.”

“Is there a point to this dissertation?”

He faced me. Ï can’t be that. If that’s what she wants, then I shouldn’t even bother.”

I sighed. “Do you have a costume kink? French maid, nurse...”

“Catholic school girl.”

Bingo. “You wouldn’t mind Andrea wearing a Catholic school uniform, would you?”

“No, I wouldn’t.” His eyes glazed over and he slipped off to some faraway place.

I snapped my fingers. “Raphael! Focus.”

He blinked at me.

“I’m guessing -- and this is just a wild stab in the dark -- that Andrea might not mind if once in a while you dressed up as a pirate. But I wouldn’t advise holding her relatives for ransom nookie. She might shoot you in the head. Several times. With silver bullets.”

An understanding crept into Raphael’s eyes. “I see.”

Curran and the peaches, hehe!

Wooing!

“He’s a Beast Lord , but in the end , he’s only a man.”

Poor Derek, he has a new look and Julie comes in rather handy. I love that mothering side to Kate.

Kate really showed me her colors in this book. She has such a monstrously huge heart. She has such an Alpha female personality. She is earning her stripes with Curran’s pack. She is respected even though she does things her way and runs her mouth. She is very much a part of the Pack, she just doesn’t realize it yet. She is also tough. She will fall on a sword before she lets anybody she cares for get hurt. She is impressive.

“They aren’t children,” Curran said to me. “They know what they’re doing.”

It made no difference to me. I would rather walk a hundred times into the Pit than see one of them die in there.

Saiman gets a bigger role and he is always a surprise with what he comes out with and how he is used in the series. He's the wild card character.

Saiman sighed. “At the risk of sounding crude, wooing you is like playing basketball with a porcupine. No compliment goes unpunished.”

From this installment and using my fingers and toes I have deduced that the year is 2040. Also page 40 told me that Kate was nine in 2024 and she is twenty five in this series, so that would be where the math came in.

This book made me realize a lot of things about Kate. For me, these books get better and better. I know Raphael and Andrea get a spinoff series, but dang, I do like Jim too and Derek.

I am interested to see where Derek's character goes now after this rather traumatic experience he went through. Is love on the cards for Kate's sidekick?

Looking forward to cracking open , Magic Bleeds # 4. With that title, things will certainly be interesting.
